The Permaculture Way of Life | Manisha Lath Gupta | TEDxShivNadarUniversity

  • When Manisha and her husband acquired a piece of land in the hope to grow clean food and harvest freshwater, they did not know that their lives would change forever, in more ways than one. They established Aanandaa Permaculture Farm as an example of working with nature to create a self-sustaining & regenerative ecosystem. They challenged the local wisdom of chemical farming and convinced their team to adopt a chemical-free path to build a food forest. Watch how Manisha explains the details of converting a barren piece of land into a thriving ecosystem, and why she believes that permaculture is the pathway to self-sustenance and harmony. Manisha Lath Gupta is a Permaculturist, Entrepreneur and a former Marketer and Banker. She is currently the founder of Aanandaa Permaculture Farms - where she employs the sustainable practices of permaculture to reconnect with and give back to nature.
She is also the Co-Founder of Mojarto.com an online portal for artists, galleries, and collectors of Indian contemporary art to buy, sell and exhibit their work. In her earlier roles, Manisha has held crucial leadership roles at Uber, Clix Capital and Axis Bank This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. You definately deserved this and much more stages like this to bring back the roots of Agriculture in the ecosystem to enhance the lifestyle of Farmers and lastly we as consumers. Wow! I am very impressed. I have been doing permaculture on my farm here in East Tennessee for the last 25 years. I live alone but I produce so much food with just myself as labor. I share with many people and seniors during this pandemic that are unable to get out frequently to shop. A permaculture gardening is a love of mine and also a hobby. I preserve and dehydrate and process much of the food that I eat all year. I am also a vegetarian which I learned to be vegetarian by living in Tamil Nadu South India back in the early 70s. I worked in a small village working with Farmers on teaching methods of increasing their rice production with the use of chemicals and fertilizers. My God, I have come a long way since. I go back to India on occasion because the people in that Village became my family that I love so dearly. Even today, here in Tennessee I still cook and eat mostly South Indian vegetarian food. Thank you for your work. This was an incredible video. Please remain safe and healthy you and your family during this pandemic.

I am so happy that people are still spreading the P word! My urban food forest in Portland Oregon is now over 10 years old and producing well enough and educating those who come through. My homestead in the city (6 years) has provided us with fruit, vegetables, berries and nuts, our chickens are happy fertilizing our compost heap and giving us eggs. It is a beautiful paradigm shift to experience and it makes me so happy to see others going through it too!!

"...our farmers are dependent on their next crop for their livelihood" that's so true and I want to thank you for mentioning this. I have been there when my father was earning our whole livelihood through farming. Only way to come out of this is by having at least one person in farmer's family to have job which can support family and agriculture. Only then we will be able to break this chain. Government will never help us on this as it is busy in procuring large farms for corporate who can make government free of its responsibilities towards farmers

Had heard of organic farming, but permaculture seems a more holistic approach to farming with an entire ecosystem sustaining itself. Govt must encourage both farmers and common folks to engage in permaculture, which will make us live healthier lives, generate our own food without pesticides, and reduce our carbon footprint too. PM Modi should push such concepts as part of his Aatma Nirbhar Bharat campaign.

Great and inspiring speech by Manisha. This is the need of hour to every body to start farming or adopt farming for quality and healthy food. Her farm is replication of best practices of Natural and Permaculture system.

Soooo Beautifully presented! Proud of you Manisha! I had been greatly inspired by Nammalvars talks on permaculture i think around 2006 or 2007. Later i was happy to see Aranyas development, a couple in Goa and then Aananda's. In between i used to check out Rob Greenfield and others. But recently my urgency has increased by Aanandas consistent posts. Now I am waiting impatiently to get a piece of land to rejuvenate. If not for this Covid, we would be out there now searching for land. And they are so expensive too....But I believe everything has its own time!

I watched this video not once but repeated multiple times select portions of it.
Am not able to hold myself in relating our life.. we live in, with your permaculture movement.
Certain statements made by you especially with respect to weeds relates to negative thoughts in our blind mind viz. material desire, anger, greed etc.
Like Soil (mitti) comprises of many living organisms/ bacterias, our Body (also mitti) is made of microscopic life organic forms.
To ensure soil (body) is always fertile (positive vibes & spirit) and weeds do not grow (negativity avoided), it took ~12 years for a beautiful permaculture farm to come up.
Complete physiological/ mental changes and firm establishment of new good habits also takes 12 years in a body as mentioned in various spiritual books.
Isn't life similar like farm, wherein if we allow anything and everything to grow would become like jungle unless we control, give positive feed and grow consciously to convert into a beautiful farm/ life.
Your systematic planning, constant efforts with positive mindset have always be an inspiration for many of us.

But nothing wrong with a jungle in Mother Earth.. Than a farm a jungle is more healthy for her
The land available under the wild is very less compared to the land under humans.. It is time to give back the land to the wild
