- I recently visited Northumberland for a week, and these photo's were taken on my visit to Alnwick Castle (a Pilgrimage for Harry Potter fans!)
In the first two films Alnwick Castle played "Hogwarts" We actually did the Harry Potter tour where they showed you exactly what was filmed where.....
The main places you will recognize is when the first years go up to the entrance and Neville loses his toad, it was the entrance arch here, and then the first flying lesson was on the grass (there is a poster right where it happened). Also when Harry flies up to get Neville's remembrall you can see the top of Alnwick Castle, and when Woods shows Harry about the quidditch balls, you can see the sentinels behind Harrys head..
Here is a bit of info on Alwick Castle and other movies and shows that were filmed there:
Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England, the first being Windsor Castle, and has been the home of the Percys, Earls and Dukes of Northumberland since 1309. The earliest mention of Alnwick Castle in the history books appears soon after 1096 when Yves de Vescy became baron of Alnwick and erected the earliest parts of the Castle.
The Castle was first restored by the 1st Lord Percy of Alnwick in the early 1300's and portions of this restoration remain today, including the Abbot's Tower, the Middle Gateway and the Constable's Tower.
Filmed at Alnwick Castle

There seems to be a heart melting softness within me when I see castles...it's always been a special feeling since I was a little girl. I love the different stones they've used over centuries for the castles too.
I actually spent 6 months studying there in college. I went through a study abroad program at St. Cloud State Univ. in Minnesota where I'm from. This was long before any of the Harry Potter books or films. I remember watching the first film and thinking "I know this castle, that's my castle!" and the credits confirmed this. One of my fondest memories ever was my time spent in Alnwick, England!
Hi treasure, Lisa your dedication to your art is awesome. i enjoy seeing your work, the results of your research, and the mastery used to present your love. i love your intensity.
I love that you went here and could share it with us all. Wonderful video, Lisa, such an amazing place and beautiful photography of it. Thank you. xo Lily
Gorgeous... breathtaking, wow!
beautiful work - the soundrack, the photography,the video production and the background information are simply wonderful. You've got skills!
Wow! Thank you Lisa.
I had no idea this place existed. It is truly magical.
WOW! Simply stunning! Spectacular video.
Elizabeth is love.
The lake does look way better in the new ones, it's just the grounds, you can kind of tell they've used all these special effects when they didn't in the first too. this castle was just amazing!
@WitchesSky Thank you so much for wishing me a lovely holiday & for providing such a great 'preview' of Alnwick Castle! I will certainly check out your other videos now. The trouble is, a week is normally never long enough in an area to do it justice - we're so lucky in England to have such lovely places to visit, even if we don't get the weather! :-)
Beautiful, Lisa! Almost as good as being there myself! Thanks so much for sharing.
Wow this was a great treat! How fun it must have been to visit such a beautiful castle!
the audio combined with the pictures is PERFECT!! hope to go there one day! :)
If you're interested there are some great scenes shot in Alnwick and Bamburgh Castles in the second episode of the early 1980s programme "Robin of Sherwood", the one called "Robin and the Sorcerer, Part 2" They used Alnwick as Nottingham Castle so you see it on almost every episode and the Bamburgh parts are towards the end of that episode which is the second of a two part pilot. It is on RUclips but I'm unable to post the link in comments unfortunately. I'm sure you'll find it easily enough.
It would be the freakin coolest thing ever to live there
Oh I would love to see that place! Thanks for sharing!
That castle looks so timeless...
Have just, unwittingly, booked a holiday cottage a stone's throw from the castle for July of this year! I'm a big, big HP fan (more so Snape actually!) & can't believe I didn't realise this was part of the setting for Hogwarts! Duh! Fortunately my 13-year-old son is into both HP & castles (my hubby more the latter than former I think!) so we're definitely be paying this place a visit!! Thanks for this 'preview'! :-)
just been there recently, its really great! being a harry potter fan it was cool watching the films afterwoulds and recognizing the place :) also good job with the editing.
I lived in the castle during '76 to '77. My 21st year--- it was truly magical.
Me too, '74 to 76'. Happy days indeed!
I have been to the Alnwick Castle. I screamed as soon as I got there!!!
Excellent, Lisa....I know someone who will really want to see this!
I'm honoured to live in Alnwick. For those of you who want to come here, I highly recommend you do. It's quite expensive to go to the castle, but it's worth every penny. Every so often they do a potter inspired day. Very cool. Even without the castle the town is very nice with lots of nice places, shops and people. Hope to see you here some day. 🤗
Cracking castle, just resented paying over a tenner just to see the gardens!
I've been there!! It's incredible!!
i miss this castle, in the new ones you don't get the same feeling when they are in the grouds.
Amazing pictures!
wow, nice pictures,
i just finished watching "philosophers stone" for i don`t know how many times and the location is exactly the same
What a wonderful castle! I have never been to Northumberland, my good friend Mick UTD111 lives there and I drool whenever I see his scenery!:)
I really must check this place out.
oh my god. i want to come here toooo much. im such a harry potter geek. :D
very cool thanks for sharing!
would love to go there it looks amazing.
I love the background sounds!
There is a study abroad option that goes through my University which offers this place! We would actually get to live in the castle! (only a certain part) What a beautiful looking castle.. I hope I get the opportunity to go there.
Beautiful video!
Thanks :-)
I know exactly what you mean WitchesSky. The air is different....the history is felt and the very essence of those that have been there, are STILL there. Awesome feeling if not a bit intimidating sometimes.
everyone knows you need to run through a wall and take the hogwarts express to get there jk
The one thing I noticed is that in the movie Harry and all those other characters are noticed but not so much of the scenes like the castle. Like the silent one nobody ever spoke of the island it was filmed only of the turtle.
WoW Lisa!! Beautiful Sights and Sounds!!..Its amazing when you think of the age and History of these Structures it leaves one in awe..or as they say in the Hood...Thats some Midevil Shit There Baby!! LOL!!!!....Beautiful!!!!!!!!!
omg we would see eachother like once a month its so huge we would really need a broom to get around that place
4:10 us hagrid's hut ._.
this is one of the few videos that it is okay to be a slide show.
wow its great you got to go there! I wish I could...not likely though.. how much was it to get in? just wondering.
@XxJenna4evaXx It was used mainly for interior scenes, and inspiration for the design on the school you see on-screen.
::: GREAT, REALLY NICE, THANKX 4 THE VIDEO :::
where is it ? how can I find where this castle is, because I want to see it.
greats
The description, title, and movie are misleading. Alnwick castle does indeed provide the location for a scene in the movie, notably the part where the students first learn to fly their brooms. However, that is the extent to which the castle is displayed theatrically. To declare outright that this castle is "Hogwarts" is unequivocally wrong.
As near as damn it though, ask Daniel Radcliffe!
which city is this near? i studied in london a few years back... seems like i remember seeing this castle. near oxford? canterbury? lol those out of town trips seem all muddled together
There was an argument, ALnwick Castle wanted to have the label of "home of Harry potter!" but the producers said no, so they said they couldn't film there anymore.
The castle featured as hogwarts in the first Two harry potter movies but where they featured as hogwarts in harry potter movies 3-7 ?? Please answer ;)
Is there a Harry Potter shop, tour, or like a demonstration or something?
What castle did they use for the others? Or is it just cgi
I was laso wondering... is it still the same castle in the other movies?
how did you feel when the team that made the harry potter movies came?
how have u been there?
have you a flying car? or u get the train? WHERE DO U GET THE MAGIC TRAIN? PLEASE TELL ME!
PLEASE!
@Hiben75 aww that sucks :(
Sorry for your friend
was it an actual part in the movie, or like a set job?
by the looks of the bridge tho it looks like the fourth may have been filmed here cuz hes like flying over it and evreything
so if they used this castle for the 1st two movies then what castle did they use for the rest?
how far is it from london, you need to go by plane, car, train?
Molto suggestivo
Wow! its real i like it..
why did this castle not feature in the other films, just the first two?
Truly this looks DIFFERENT than da movies but of course thats OBVIOUS since its a bloody movie
I wanna move in!
is this a real school where u learn spells and stuff?????? i really wanna go there and see it... is this in london my brother lives in london and he said that he will take me to london on summer :) maybe -.-'
yer but if i went there id probabley only go to wales witch is sad id love to visit scotland and england and ireland
Pleas Tell me the adress i want to visit it xo , It looks awesome!! PLeaas!!! Awesome vid btw!!
what was the castle originally built for?
I live there, it really isn't as magical as it's made out to be.
I never noticed they had changed the set.
is there any harry potter replica things u can buy there? :)
i always thought the Mont Saint-Michel looked more like Hogwarts, or maybe just from the inside.
I want to watch harry potter now. sec let me find the dvds...
Huh! We all know that the Real Hogwarts is in Scotland, next castle over the Black Lake(loch), from Nutters Castle!!
This is just one they had to use in the film, cos they did'nt get permission from the Dean to film!
love from Scotland Paul/Chef of Nutters =)5*
amazing pictures.. but this castle is kind of a dissapointment after seeing Hogwarts :P
@magi123ema
it wasn't for the movie at all but he still would have been able to probably like meet the actors
................AWWWWSSSSOOOOMMMMEEEE
the nostaligia c':
ive been there lots of times
i want to go there from my 16th and dress in the hogwarts uniform (:
@WitchesSky
Since I'm a huge HP fan, my parents told me; 'We are going to Hogwarts' :p
but this doesn't even look like hogwarts. I know Hogwarts was fake for 40% but this is only the quidditch trainingfield from the first two Harry Potter movies, I think this castle would get twice as much visits if it was a bit Harry Potter related :L
Also, Is this anywere near London?
I live in Holland, and I might go to London w/ Christmas (Hamleys!!!! :D) and maybe to this castle.
// GodericG
@nomadicsx1 hate to break it to you, but scotland is in europe
ya! i know someone who went to college there
yeah like i mean after watching harry potter and seeing the computerised Hogwarts... nothing can compete with it ;) lol
damn i wish i could go but im in australia :(
that will be my house when i will rich!
The castle featured as hogwarts in the first harry potter
why would they go to europe, britain has dramatic landscapes galore, the highlands, lake district etc. not to mention that britain is littered with fantastic castles. warwick would have been a better choice ...
iv been there!!!!
I've been there
lol the wizarding world of Harry Potter theme park?
Here I live in Alnwick and to be honest its not rreally a big deal for me!
Just think yourself lucky!
@WitchesSky
Hmm maybe I'll go there D:
THEY SHOULD HAVE CHOSEN WARWICK CASTLE AS HOGWARTS!!! IT'S MUCH MORE IMPRESSIVE! TAKE A LOOK AT IT ON RUclips, PEOPLE!!! oh, and sorry for shouting ...
@WitchesSky rite 10x
@magi134ema
A friend of mine almost got a job there when they were filming the fourth and fifth movies he would have been there. but he got to him and 1 other guy but he lost it and the guy was less qualified than him. :(
that caslte is haunted
I live in alnwick, it actually sucks:L
Silly ...
whe i got rich im going to make the real harry potter castle
