I was born in 1953 and grew up watching this show. Because of this show I always wanted to join the Navy. Well, at 28 I did join, spent 20 years in the Navy and retired a GMG1. I was able to live a grand adventure all thanks to McHale and his band of hooligans.
You earned your own blooper for not including Ernest Borgnine's Oscar win for Best Actor in Marty (1955). But covering his voice work with Tim Conway on Sponge Bob earns you a do over.
Thanks. I grew up in the 70s and 80s so I guess I thought people would be most concerned with Airwolf. I'm going to have to watch that movie now. I love seeing him act.
One of my favourite grown up shows when I was kid. We had Lidsville and the Munsters after school then in the 4pm hour this show then a bit later F-Troop. Re-runs were awesome in 1977!
So THAT was where I saw the jeep hanging outside a flying plane! I have wondered where I saw that for literally decades!! Thank you for solving that mystery! I guess I can die a lot happier now! 😂
@diannewallace4829 And "Marty" was the film Borgnine won the academy award. A few of us haven't forgotten, I guess. He was so relatable in all his roles.
Ernest Borgnine also appeared as an underground CIA storehouse agent along w/Bruce Willis playing Frank Moses (A character from DC Comics) in the film RED (2010).
I hope you all get a kick out of this look back at McHale's Navy. I learned a few things researching the video that I didn't know before. I never realized Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway reunited on SpongeBob Squarepants.
How about when they showed PT 109 at the dock, JFK's boat that was later sunk when an Japanese destroyer rammed it and cut it in half. Kennedy isn't named in the episode but Parker refers to Kennedy's accent and imitates him. There are many such in-jokes in the show, and did you know Joseph Heller of Catch-22 fame wrote for the series?
Starting in 1999, Ernest Borgnine did 15 episodes three video games and two video specials of SpongeBob up until shortly before his death in 2012. Tim Conway did 14 episodes, six video games and four video specials of SpongeBob.
I was always impressed by the character development like Seaman Bell, whose nickname was "Tinkerbell", shortened even further to "Tink". I think little things like that really make a show.
@@mikeysuzefour Bob Hastings appeared on a season three episode of The Incredible Hulk, My Favorite Magician as a restaurant owner. And since he costarred with Ray Walston in the TV show My Favorite Martian as Uncle Martin, Bill Bixby invited him to guest star in the episode as the magician, Jasper Dowd. Thanks for sharing, Tvcrazyman. You might want to update this once you have seen Borgnine's Oscar winning turn in the great film "Marty", a classic. You will then recognize when Conway and Ernie do a take off on it, saying to each other repeatedly - "what do you wanna do?" "I don't know, what do you wanna do?". Also, there must be at least 6 or 7 times when Flynn throws in unscripted asides regarding Borgnine's Oscar win, usually right before a scene ends, such as - "McHale, now that performance will get you that Oscar." The PT 73, not the wooden scaled down mock up but the one shown in the opening credits, is actually a customized British Motor Torpedo Boat or MTB. Awesome video as always Mr Tvcrazyman. I'm starting to look at some of the new TV shows now to see if there is anything I can see. LOL 😂 Have a good Wednesday to you and until your next video ✌️ Mr Tvcrazyman.
You are correct about the reason why Ernest did not appear in the movie sequel to McHale's navy. Another reason according to Ernest is that the director Edward Montagne refused to show him the script and wanted to make the film cheaply.
Universal made the color movie of The Munsters after it was canceled, they figured it would introduce European audiences to the Munsters rerun package it was about to sell to European TV networks. The 2nd McHales Navy movie was made for the same reason, if you notice much of both was recycled material, they look like they cost about the same as what 4 TV episodes would run.
Bob Hastings was also the voice of Archie Andrews on NBC Radio from 1945 to 1953 during the Golden Age of Radio. He began his move to television in 1949.
I always loved this show growing up as a kid watching it when it first came out on TV.Later in life seeing them in reruns I see so many future stars that started as guest stars. The one I remember most is Raquel Welch, two years before she became famous in One Million Years BC.
About the aircraft in the 1964 color movie, the blue-grey aircraft seen at first was a Douglas SBD Dauntless naval dive-bomber. The aircraft seen spinning toward the ground after being fired upon by Ens. Parker, sporting a blue fuselage and yellow wings, was a Consolidated-Vultee BT13 trainer aircraft (lovingly nicknamed the "Vultee Vibrator").

I always thought Joe Flynn was just the funniest character on the show. The role of PT 73 was played by a refurbished, British PT boat, which accounted for the raised foredeck and the 3 sided front of the helm, whereas the American version only had 2.
Gavin MacLeod who play "Happy" Haines was not happy with his role on the show, he resented been a bit player with hardly any lines so he left the show after two seasons and his characters departure was never mentioned on the show....
