Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga - 14 Years Later.

- Опубликовано: 8 дек 2017
- Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga, is one of my personal favorite games of all time. A couple of weeks ago the remake Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions was released. I thought this would be a good time to take a look back at the original Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga, and to find out whether the game is still fun to play, fourteen years after its release.

And then there’s Mario’s “FIYAR!”
'Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga' actually has good world building.
The worldbuilding is amazing. Beanbean feels as detailed as, if not more detailed than, Mushroom Kingdom.
You should make your smm1 and smm2 levels like this{but not the find the beanstar pieces part if you are not making a puzzle level}.

Probably your best video yet. I love your deep analysis of these games... always gives me something new to think about when it comes to game design. Thanks, Ceave.

Ah, so now I finally understand why Luigi says "Thunder!" in every Ceave video he appears in. I've always enjoyed the little voice clips in SS when switching abilities, to the point that I sometimes supply them myself when playing a newer game which doesn't have them. Funnily enough, the "Thunder!" one was also my favorite.
I love the Mario and Luigi games. They have plots that are both funny and sometimes quite epic in scope, the locations are unique for Mario games, and the gameplay is always engaging. My favorite was always Bowser's Inside Story, although I'm not sure if that's just nostalgia or not, since it was my first RPG. Nowadays, it's probably a tie between Inside Story and Partners in Time. The only one I don't unconditionally love is Paper Jam, because it feels incredibly rushed, is not particularly funny, misses the opportunity to capitalize on its theme of crossing over with the Paper Mario games, and every location in it is practically ripped from the New Super Mario Bros. games.
But yeah, that one gripe aside, an amazing series in practically every way. I hope that after the new remake of Bowser's Inside Story, they go on to make a new installment that lives up to the legacy of its past.
Oh my god. This was one of my favorite games. This video made me realize I never played the second act. I just defeated cackletta and stopped, thinking I had beaten the game.
This reached into the deepest recesses of my mind and pulled out this game that I've forgotten everything about for over 10 years but remember loving.
I remember playing bowsers inside story as a kid and i loved it so much. When i replayed it years later i still loved it but i was bother by the amount of unskippable dialogue
I’m actually playing through this game right now. I think that it is amazing and charming and that Nintendo could make a Mario and Luigi game but it could be completely 3D. So the overworld could be like a true 3D Mario game, and have HD graphics. Just imagine a Super Mario Odyssey-like game where you play as Mario and Luigi at the same time, and an enemy will battle you. Now, the battles could be the same, but it can be 3D, so you can make Mario and Luigi move left and right while the enemy is attacking you. I really hope that Nintendo does this.
By the way, can you do Zelda videos?
Mario and Lugi holds a special place in my heart along with the first 3 Paper Mario games. I'm taking a lot of inspiration from them for my next game. Videos about the Mario RPGs and your more general game design videos are super helpful and interesting.
Approaching the halfway point of my quest to watch every single video uploaded by Ceave
This was really well done. I'd love to see you analyze the other games in the series!

I never see anyone mentionning the fact that the music in this game's Bowser Castle is AMAZING, seriously am I the only one who loves it?
I found your channel a couple of day ago and I binged almost all of your videos. I'm definitely subscribing. I can't wait to see what content you post next. Looking forward to it. Cheers!
I still play this game all the time on my phone with an emulator. I love whipping it out when I need wait for a bus or something.
I also grew up with this game, and I absolutely love it also! you mentioned that the gameplay is extremely varied, and yes, this is part of what makes it so good, but even within that variation, it's incredibly internally consistent. Everything is about jumping at first, but also about the a button being mario's button and the b button being luigi's. This is true in the battles, attacking, defending, the overworld, and most of the minigames. (for the most part, there are parts where luigi takes the lead and has to be leader and solo leader, so I guess you could say it's about timing the relevant button, which is technically more correct, but less intuitively true, and less the core concept)it's taking the concept to the wonderful extreme and keeps it extremely consistent wthin just about the entirety of the game. That consistency reduces confusion ultimately and keeps you able to do those varied tasks without too much trouble. In addition, great sprites, amazing music, really tight controls, charming world and characters, and interesting bosses, good amounts of exploration and secrets and lots of other contexts where the controls are used in that consistent way. Also, yeah, it's really nice to see the quality of the brotherhood between the two, it displays the actual brotherly love between the two very well pretty much always through dialogue and sprites.
Yeah, upgrading only pow does make it significantly more difficult, especially because of the diminishing returns. It's not too terrible if you have a balanced approach. Except for the final boss, that one's insanely difficult no matter what - well, unless you have a mush badge.
There are some problems that I think are present in this game, but overall, I still love it.
the way mario just walks out of the shower like "oh hi toad"

Nice video, I liked your explanations about all the unique mechanics in the game. That's a neat theory about the possible cut areas and re-structuring of the game, I hadn't thought about that before, but it makes quite a bit of sense.
THIS IS A FANTASTIC REVIEW!!!!!!! I love how you talk about the solo parts, and how they're important to make you feel 'empowered' when the brothers are back together. That shows real insight into game design, even after you baited out the boring tutorial bit we all know has to happen, and that it's boring, but that it teaches you. Like, a review shouldn't have to teach us proper tutorial etiquette, but you did it in a way to make it easy to appreciate a tutorial, because the game does the tutorial in a hands-on way.
14:50 interesting, I would call HooHoo University and Bowser's Castle my favorite areas in the game just due to the amount of enemys. I found the combat system in this game to be amazingly fun.
Mario doesn’t hit his head on the question blocks, he punches them with his fist when he jumps (he isn’t just jumping enthusiastically, his fist goes up for reason)
The first Mario and Luigi game I played is Mario and Luigi: paper jam
Mine was Dream Team.
Inside Story for me
Partners In Time is where I’m at
The Mario sprite... Where have I seen that before....?
That's right! Super Mario 63!!!!
Man I freaking love this game, gotta go play it again. Thanks for reminding of my favourite game of all time!
every zone in beanbean kingdom is named after a type or sound for laughing. Guffaw ruins/ Teehee Valley/ HooHoo University, etc...
and then when the game finally starts to throw stronger than average enemies at you, you're in Joke's End, because who's laughing now?
I'm feeling very THUNDERrr today!
When ever I replay a Mario and Luigi game, I always make a challenge, and I usually try to defeat ever enemy I see and I can’t run away.
20 years later and Luigi's thunderrr is still amazing
Luigi saying "Thunder"? You forgot the best sound effect: Mario jumping off a barrel.
HOOHOOHOO
I loved those voice clips. It's a shame AlphaDream didn't keep that.
Love this vid, Superstar Saga is one of my favorite games of all time
This is the video were the voice of Ceave himself, has changed. Hes completed diferent from the 2020 voice!
I miss this voice type... 😌
Ceave, the second reason you were weak at the end of the game. The game rewards you for varying your stats by giving you higher possible rolls, while the ones you roll a lot stay low. Just so you know
Also I agree this is an amazing and underrated game.
Awesome video
Jumping, Hammering, and Magical Gloving
I am so lucky to have played this game when I was 8-10 years old. This is one of my all-time favorite video games, and I was very sad when I could no longer find my cartridge.
Watching this video made me realize that this game from 2003 has held up extremely well to this day. I also absolutely loved the music in this game. While I didn't pay close attention to the story, as an adult now, i can appreciate the well crafted story.
In fairness to the other games, the mechanics take longer to introduce because of the fact that there are more playable characters, most likely. Well, besides Dream Team, but you could treat the Dream Worlds as different as well. In Bowser's Inside Story especially, one of the characters is completely different to the others. Partners in Time gives you 4 total characters which are split into pairs a lot, and Paper Jam's 3rd character creates several other moves, including special attacks. All of this needs learning, and the learning wouldn't happen all at once either. It's bound to take longer. Dream Team still happens to be my favourite despite this.
I wonder why the koopalings did not ask Bowser why he suddenly changed his look.
Finally, a recent comment!
it’s just a phase
This video makes me want to play the game even more!
“There are ledges and ? Blocks, which the player probably wants to bang Mario’s head against and so on.”😂
So I never played the Mario & Luigi games, but I've always wanted to play Superstar Saga. A lot of the points that you made in this video are what make me love Paper Mario so much.
I am 20 right now and I’m not super into gaming, but every 5 years or so(only 3 times so far), I will come back to this game. The funny thing is, I just finally beat this game for the first time on an emulator this year :). I told my older sister and we shared great memories of playing this together all night.
I grew up pretty broke and was lucky enough to receive a gba with this game at a yard sale when I turned 5. This is the only game that can really make me cry just due to straight up nostalgia.
Nice vid :D, the only thing i missed is what they changed/added in the remake
Loved that analyse, man. Could you please do the other games? That would be awesomely awesome :D

Maybe I see badly, but what's wrong with that counter?
oh .......yeah
Good job Ceave this vid must have taken forever to make
@Leffe Monette same
The game felt so tough at the end because you were lacking the XP for level ups you should actually have gotten during the passages you skipped
32:24 tip: if cackletta looks up, her arms will as well. if she looks down, JUMP! another tip: 25:59 i know they are easy to find but i read a book in a house in the beanbean castle town, which said that the ground reacts strangely if small people are standing above a yoshi fruit... so make mario small and go look!
(yes, there is actually a house there with four books in the middle of it.)
"Cackletter" lol
"Superstar Sager"
It's just his accent :P
Lol >.
"Poppers"
I'm dying right now
'Dream Team' had the chance of having the same fluid world as 'SuperStar Saga' did but it is constantly interrupted and breaks pace with the amount of text (this game has the most out of all) and unskippable tutorial, the Dream Worlds also play a part but they're a nice addition so I can't really complain about them. When you look through all of that in my opinion, it's the best out of em' all.
Every game since Bowser’s Inside Story did have an option boss, and in Bowser’s Inside Story and Paper Jam they were both very challenging. Not to mention that Paper Jam had some pretty tough fights in general. Inside Story even had a second, Super nostalgia based optional boss that give the brothers a new special attack.
This and Paper Mario: TTYD are my all-time favourite games. We need more Mario RPGs (with proper stories, good battle systems, memorable characters, etc). But since I love the original so much (and still have it), I've no need for the remake, especially with my fondness for the aesthetically-pleasing old sprites.
I always thought Luigi said "wonder" XD
yeah i used to flip that on and off while walking because of how great that sound effect was.
Mario and Luigi superstar saga IS my favorite game of all time
I’m so mad that they don’t match Luigi with his thunder hand in other Mario promotional stuff and only give him green fire Luigi was the reason I bonded over electrical abilities and I really want more thunder hand representation!!
Another sound thing you can do is this game is that i remember that you can make mario say pi-ka or something around that which makes him sound like he is just saying pika (aka the pokemon).
Unless my memoris are wrong and im sorry about this.
Thanx Ceave
Ahhhh the first game I ever completed
Bro I remember the days in 1st grade when it's after school and my mom picks me up and never forgets to bring the gameboy. I played this after school on the ride home and was repeatedly trying to beat bowletta. This and pokemon were my childhood games.

RIP Bowser
1985 - 2003
I played this so much as a kind that I ended up with a save file with both bros at level 60 and 99 of every renewable item. It's not like that there's even that much optional content- the combat is just so engaging (and my standards were so low) that I would boot up the game and grind for fun.
You sold the Yoshi Theater beanstar piece a little short. There's a miniboss that you have to defeat as Luigi only (a piranha plant) in order to get one fruit. I don't think this changes your argument, but I thought it should be mentioned, since it makes that section feel a little less ridiculous.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (the original Mario RPG) did feature an insanely tough optional boss, the Final Fantasy inspired Culex. Overall Superstar Saga has always seemed very reminiscent of SMRPG to me.
I love this game so much played and beat it multiple times
Can we have this sort of videos also for Paper Mario, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Bros. 3?
Btw pretty fantastic work!
I remember playing this as a kid! I don't think I ever finished the game but I defiantly had lots of fun!
I actually had Superstar Saga, but at one point the storyline became unclear and I didn’t know what to do next. I just quit.
Also, am i the only one to know how to dodge Cackletta's arm attack? The hint is the eyes, if the right eye is looking up the right arm is up and if the left eye is looking down the left arm is down
I liked Bowser's Inside Story because it was a real sequel - it had similar sprites and special moves, but used them in ways that the Game Boy Advanced couldn't take (technical limitations). Once you get to Blizzard Midbus the game gets incredibly difficult, and there are challenge bosses for higher skill levels. There are new minigames crafted into the fights, such as Bowser's suck in ability, and the ways that he dodges (punch, shell, etc.) reflect perfectly off of Mario and Luigi's. He can even do special moves just like Mario and Luigi, which help him climb to new places or even ground pound! Although Cackleta doesn't appear, Fawful is the main villain, and once again the final boss is a corrupted version of bowser...? There's even giant fights, where you use touch screen controls and the microphone to do huge attacks to a building or robot. There's a minigame inside Bowser's body around every corner, and it makes you want to play more and more, no matter how hard the game is. The theme isn't just the same Mario and Luigi one from the previous two games, but it expands with Bowser showing that he actually has feelings and he's not just one big evil boss. And if that's not enough, the music is great.
(BIG BREATH)
Superstar Saga had an actual, connected overworld, unlike the 'floating island' maps of Partners in Time.
The background song that ceave uses in all his videos is from this game too
Grabbing the yoshi fruits to me is great but it would be better earlier in the game or as a side quest. What I mean by earlier in the game is either just before you get the bros hammer moves then once you do get the moves you're like hey when I was collecting those fruits there were a lot of areas I couldn't go maybe now I can. this would also work if the quest happened just before receiving bros hand moves. This quest could also easily fit right after the hooniversity.
I cant believe i hadnt found this video yet this is my favourite game ever
And i havent even completed it yet. Stuck on last boss :(
I absolutely adore this game, it is so damn good. One of the biggest appeals for me is the Bros. progression as it's a lot less random than in the other games. Especially the elemental powers, that shit is so cool. While the hammer upgrades may not be the most interesting thing ever, I like them a good deal because they show a visual progression throughout the game: going from shoddy stone hammers to shiny metal ones to finally even shinier gold ones.
I also really dig how the game's story feels like two games with a short period in-between. It's real cool how they basically fit what easily could've been Cackletta's sequel ghost revenge plot into this game. Also I personally don't agree with your theory on the Beanstar pieces:
- The game pretty neatly splits into the two evenly sized Cackletta and Bowletta arcs with the Vacation arc in-between being half that length. I'd say if you split her two arcs in half, the game neatly splits into 5 roughly even sized chunks as well. Having more large sections in the Beanstar pieces quest would bloat that section of the game.
- Joke's End as a Beanstar piece area doesn't make a ton of sense to me as without this area as the penultimate area, Bowser's Castle doesn't make a whole lot of sense story-wise. I'd say the reason they used Jojora is because at this point you're technically working with Cackletta, she has no reason to put obstacles in your way so they needed someone else unaffiliated with her.
Good video, I enjoyed it a great deal!
Thunder!
Ok I'll see myself out
When you realized that there is a 3DS remake with a minigame included
Some Nobody yep. Love the remake
I like the little bit of implicit story at the beginning where they introduce the player to the game mechanics. The idea that toads cant jump, while it doesnt remain true in lots of games, is a neat little idea. The thing that makes mario special, that allows him to go on great adventures and save the kingdom over and over, is his mere ability to jump lol. It's so fitting with the game franchise in general
I never played this game, but I'm tempted to go back and do so. Their solution to how boring turn based RPG's can get is brilliant and well crafted, it's a solution on par with the historical importance of games like Chrono Trigger, and should be implemented everwhere it can
Luigi says "Thunder"? I thought he was saying "Hander", cuz it's a hand power.
