I'm just finally getting around to playing this game... 7 years after you made this videos. This guide is unbelievable, thank you so much for putting it together. As a long time Metal Gear fan this game has really surprised me, but it's incredible. The game is a little obtuse about teaching the mechanics, so thanks for laying them out.
How do you block? I see people getting into this block stance before they get hit and it seems to make parrying much easier, but I can't figure out how to do it.
The official KONAMI Metal Gear Rising linked to this video, you finally made it chip! Maybe next they'll offer you a business partnership and you can finally make all the RUclips money.
PSA to anyone wondering why he sounds annoyed in this video: While celebrated now, at the time of initial release on consoles, the game was getting ripped apart on early video impressions and social media by people complaining about the lack of blocking/dodging, so this video was released shortly after as a response to that. While you could make the argument that games shouldn't require you to watch other videos learning how to play them, at the same time you got also have folks on the "Sequelitis mentality" that now complain constantly about ingame tutorials holding your hand. Revengeance is not 100% innocent in the way it explained itself, but people wouldn't like a 16 minute tutorial in-game on what to do either. It's a lose-lose at this point if games have even a modicum of complexity. But thankfully, titles like this, Monster Hunter, Souls titles, fighting games, and rougelikes are being accepted more easily now by the mainstream.
Sorry to reply to a year old comment, but yes it is a user problem when it comes to these platinum games. Just compare the criticism of this game to the IGN review of godhand. Some people just do not understand when a game is going for high technical skill rather than flashy visuals and immersive story lines. Platinum games is the modern version of what classic video games use to be. Mega man could have been ripped apart by reviewers and critics now, but many people took the challenge and realized how expertly crafted the game was. Same with castlevania, which if released today would probably have people complaining about the long attack animations and items only useful in some situations. Hell, just look at how many "critics" *cough* Yahtzee *cough* hated on the dark souls series until it became popular and they suddenly regard it as an amazing classic.

8 years ago you made this video. Guess what, it’s powerful enough that 8 years later I found it terribly useful coz I’m stuck at the game after buying it new and playing it first time in my life! Thanks! 🙏
I just bought the game on pc and was struggling against bipods and the chainsaw-dog boss. Your video helped me understanding the parry/upgrades mechanics and I now do enjoy the game, I figured out that spamming w+left click is an effective way to counter most of ennemy's attacks, especially when the camera gets messy in intense combat. Thanks you again.
i just do trial and error and i didn't even know what tf is parrying until sam fight when i relized none of my "techniques" before was working (spamming offensive defencive) This is my notes on bosses (btw there is no sub weapons while beating the bosses) For doggo when he use claw attack ninja heavy then heavy spam Run around until he uses it again rinse repeat Girl with staff abuse zangatsu and heavy (health is not important since the black robo balls drop heals) Moonsoon run like a maniac and hit some eventually then emp beat the shit with heavy then win Bald guy idk i just beat him :/ Sam offensive defensive until reach 30% (yes i kept doing that and i didn't know sam had 2nd phase) Heal then do thingy stab then win Armstrong this is just hit and run theres nothin else to do try fighting him head on and your ass will be sent back to mission failed screen
One more thing to add to this: There's also Defensive Offensive (hereby D.O.) Blade Canceling. You can parry during any part of any combo, but this relies on an incoming parry-able enemy attack. If you want to abandon whatever combo you're in the middle of (to, say, dodge an unblockable attack, or any other reason), use D.O., then enter Blade Mode at any time during D.O. Using a D.O. Blade Cancel will allow you complete and utter control of Raiden on the battlefield. D.O. itself is highly exploitable, due to its i-frames. For example, during the fight with Armstrong, you can use a sidestep or forward roll D.O. to dodge his initial fire wall attacks AND do damage to him at the same time.
If you parry but use a dodge after it, your combo won't reset. You can also use dodge to cancel animations, but you cannot cancel a dodge animation with another. Parry can cancel animations as well, but you cannot dodge right away after succesfully parrying an attack.
I think what's amazing is that the RAY fight in the very beginning was BETTER than the Ray fight - and arguably the Rex fight in the original two games. Literally answering my questions within the first 2 minutes of the video! I knew I was missing important stuff when I got my ass handed by normal mobs.
It's kinda sad that a video like this is needed. Here we have a game whose developer treats the gamer as an intelligent human being and thinks they can figure stuff out on their own and people complain. But it's nice to see that there are helpful people out there.
Why should I figure that out on my own? Do I look like some sort of gaming scientist, who likes to try out inputs randomly until something new happens?
Problem is, the Block function just sucks. I played tons of games in my life and this game should be a littl similar to Dark Souls. But hell... this stupid gameplay.
I am so bad at these types of games. I really dont know any of the combos so I just randomly mash the light and heavy attack buttons. Also I find it annoying have to move the joystick and tap the light attack button just to parry. Makes it harder to parry multiple attacks. Thanks for the video! Helps a lot!
Thanks Chip for this awesome recap video. I watched your Let's Play of Reveangance as you released it, but when I started playing today I could only remember some of your tips. This video encapsulates all the most important game mechanics. Thank you for being one of the best and most coherent Let's Players on the internet. You have helped me enormously with my first (of many) playthroughs of MGR:R.
I started looking for a dodge move everywhere in the game as soon as I saw "defensive offense" in the controls, but I learned a lot from this video, thanks.
Nice guide, seems like the game didn't do the best job of teaching certain points. The instructions for parrying are especially vague, I can certainly see why people would be mistaken and think you had to press the buttons in sequence rather than simultaneously.
Almost 8 years old and still serving its purpose. I bought the game last night after my gf recommended it to me. Knew defensive offense existed, but not how to use it. Now, hopefully, I'll be able to make MG Excelsus my bitch tomorrow and finally beat the main story. Am I still also very afraid of Armstrong? Yes. Do I care? Not enough.
Your LP was the reason I bought Revengeance on Steam, and it's just as awesome as you made it look! Many thanks to you for the videos, and to Platinum Games for a great game and a great PC port!
My preferred style is pincer bowling. This entails collecting as many grunts right in front of me as possible and doing a charged slash on them. Then I roll around in the ensuing shower of limbs yelling about invincibility frames, blade canceling, and super armor.
Glad you did this. I was lost in the sauce besides watching your LP again. I saw all these attacks coming but I had no idea how to stop attacking in time to do something about it.
Thank you, sir. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Granted that 10 seconds in, you solved all my problems with this game (I don't know if I didn't see HELP on the menu or if I ignored it out of distrust carried from things like the Windows Help section in my PC) which shows what an airhead I am, but still, I am very thankful for this and I watched it through because there was still a few tips that the HELP probably doesn't cover. You have helped me make peace with the flaws (well, flaw) I saw in this game and for that, again, thank you. Man, and on a year-old video xD
So I had this game gifted to me, and i'm so glad I found this video. I feel like I want to restart now, cause there's so much just floundering with controls. Thanks for the vid.
I absolutely loved this game, and this franchise as a whole, but I don’t recall a single game where I haven’t had to figure out most of this by myself. Thank you!
100x better than the in game tutorial. It implies you have to press parry based on the incoming DIRECTION of the enemy attacks (attacks from above are up, from the right side are right, etc).
God. I went through the entire game.. Without knowing how to dodge at all. I feel like an idiot cuz of how old *this* video is. I was all like "OMG. What do I DO with the yellow attacks!??". And of course it took me awhile to understand the block mechanics, but at least I figured it out pretty much at the beginning parts of the game x_x
I held off for a handful of years from playing this game because I was pushing the limits of my old desktop and then learned to get comfortable with my first fairly new gaming laptop. Jumped in the game over this past month on easy mode and restarted the story over halfway on hard, when I no longer felt intimidated. Already beat a couple missions again, and watching this video helps me give a better sense of what I can do.
KurwaRomek one, not even close to true (on either comment) two, I don't base how fun a game was for me on how many enemies I can count. If you don't like the game, why are you trolling a video for it? Go bother people on a review video you worthless fuck.
KurwaRomek then don't play the game. The video isn't a review, it's for people who want some tactics and tech for the game, why are you whining about this here? Write a bad review for the game if you care so much, this isn't really the place for it. Calling me a faggot for liking a game you don't like doesn't really make your rant any more relevant.
Thanks. I got through much of the game without knowing some of these, and even got to the end without knowing some. You'd think they'd have extra VR training missions to teach these but nope, you pretty much have to learn by trial and error. The blade canceling I did learn myself while going for gold speed on a stealth-kill VR mission. I needed to cut down on the stealth kill animation time so I just pressed buttons during the animation looking for a way to cancel. A lot of times I didn't even realize that they were presenting me with the zandatsu screen.
One interesting thing to note is that the Sai lets you keep any heavy input motions you purchase for the katana. This is useful because you can do crazy stuff like sai kick someone away then stinger into them, or sai kick someone up then do breakdance chains. Its surprisingly useful.
I just recently finished revengeance on the ps3 and I was unaware of at least 3 of the tips shown in here. That blade mode cancel would've been a great help against Armstrong.
Bro you saved my life, I stopped playing this game years ago and got whatever reason I decided to play it again, I was in a boss fight and couldn't figure out how to play again. Thanks to this video I didn't have to restart a new file.
I searched for guides and stupid videos that i couldn't understand appeared..and this random video was in my feed and THIS is EXACTLY what i wanted. THANKS MAN
Thank you so much for making this video. I know it’s an old video but it really does help getting some background knowledge. There were some thing in game that I never learned but did learn in this video. Such as dodge. I watched TheRadBrad’s play-though and saw that he was dodging left and right and I was like “how is he doing that??” This video does give a lot of good teachings on how to play this game. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I totally misunderstood some of the tutorial, this video really got me on track. I didn't realize I had absolutely no clue what I was doing before lol
"Back in my old unit, the commander used to tell us at morning calisthenics: "Whenever you're in trouble, hit the START button!!" Wonder how he's doing these days."
Idiot as I am, I ended up playing the entirety of MGR *WITHOUT* knowing how to use the skills like Defensive Offensive. It was so painful, but now I'm having a blast.
Thanks for this, I was super confused about the blade mode mechanics and how slow mo and zandatsu modes were activated, because it appeared pretty random to me at first. I definitely understand everyone not wanting their hand held to learn everything, but a lot of these mechanics are pretty important and not explained whatsoever lol
You should rename the video to 'Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance 101'. What a great newbies guide. I just recently found the game at a used game retailer, and boy was I confused by just about EVERYTHING this game had in store for me. Thanks a bunch for clarifying the most basics of the game for us! Regards
In terms of all these tips, this game shares the design of Monster Hunter (another game people consider one of their GOTYs), which also briefly mentions useful menus and tactics. But where Monster Hunter requires combat-assisting things that take several minutes (foraging, mining, cooking, crafting, and whatever else), these tactics take up to a minute each to get the hang of.
Excellent video :) I'll be buying MGR: R for PC soon, even after having played a console version, and some of your info was new to me, so I'm definitely gonna try your tips out.
Thanks to your video, 3 days later, I'm now all the way up to the final stage where I must fight Metal Gear Excelsus and Armstrong. I got my ass kicked thoroughly by Monsoon...twice...and then fought Sundowner several times till I wore him down and beat him. Having to angle the Blade Mode attack and then let off a single slice is harder than fuck when I just sliced through the last several dozen guys button mashing.
Thanks for this video! I picked it up in the steam sale and I was just getting ready to start playing. I'm not too familiar with this genre, so I thought I'd look at a quick guide, and there was definitely some stuff here that I wouldn't have gotten right away.
i have no idea how i passed all the levels before sam, but i was stuck on him. Cause of one little problem, i didnt know how tf to parry. Thanks to that guide i passed him on first try. Thank you.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! dude i was rolling on the floor like my grandma in the blade wolf fight because i didn't know how to parry i cannot thank you enough
It seems as though this video was posted by the official MGR page on Facebook. Nice video, by the way; despite the fact that the game is pretty self explanatory, the dodge and blade cancelling is a nice thing to know.
Thanks for this, I was getting mauled badly until your video helped the combat click for me. This game is amazing, can't believe I let it gather dust on my Steam library for so long.
Excellent video. I found the tutorial on parry left me scratching my head as to if I had successfully managed to parry even once. You've cleared everything up for me. Can't wait to play this later.
Great game, better demo. Can't believe so much of this is taught so briefly or glossed over entirely in the game though. This is essential viewing. Thanks!
Thanks man, I'm on senator (first appearance) and dunno how I'll reached to him before you're video. Tbh I understand parry mechanic on 3rd lvl, and now after your video I learned about defence offence. Really, you helped to understand work of these mechanic's, and the game didn't do well to explaining this. We are all appreciate to your guide.
I remember playing the demo for this on xbox 360 years ago and I never did end up buying the game, probably because I had some trouble with it. Cut to now after I spent a couple hours with it on Steam...doing ok, dying occasionally and getting frustrated because I didn't really understand how this game should be played. I played it like a spaz and was mashing buttons left and right. This game is not supposed to be played like that at all lol. I would like to think I'm not a complete idiot, but the tutorial in the game doesn't really teach you anything of importance other than how to use blade mode. Doesn't explain anything about combos or how to properly utilize blade mode to get the most out of it. This video was a game changer...literally. So thanks!...almost 7 years later to the day.
This should be on the main Steam page as the default video.
This should be included in all copies of Revengeance.

And of course it took me awhile to understand the block mechanics, but at least I figured it out pretty much at the beginning parts of the game x_x
I just started and was disturbed by a lack of dodging. This guide is very helpful
I held off for a handful of years from playing this game because I was pushing the limits of my old desktop and then learned to get comfortable with my first fairly new gaming laptop. Jumped in the game over this past month on easy mode and restarted the story over halfway on hard, when I no longer felt intimidated. Already beat a couple missions again, and watching this video helps me give a better sense of what I can do.
thank you. this game is so perfect. it's does for character action what God hand did for beat em ups
Vilesentry so true
I know this comment is old as fuck but... Devil may cry 5 my dude
Thanks for making this video dude. I had the feeling that I was missing out on some stuff but couldn't figure it out. This really helped!
I watched TheRadBrad’s play-though and saw that he was dodging left and right and I was like “how is he doing that??”
This video does give a lot of good teachings on how to play this game. Thank you.
If they do a sequel to this game they should hire you as the lead tutorial’s employees
This has been a massive help
Thank you so much! I totally misunderstood some of the tutorial, this video really got me on track. I didn't realize I had absolutely no clue what I was doing before lol
Thanks for the tip that you posted 6 years ago lol I stared playing it 6 years later lol
"Back in my old unit, the commander used to tell us at morning calisthenics: "Whenever you're in trouble, hit the START button!!" Wonder how he's doing these days."
This made the game 100x more enjoyable! Thanks!
Did I detect a hint of glee when Chip mentioned eating spines?
It's always been awkward to just run from everything I can't block.
Idiot as I am, I ended up playing the entirety of MGR *WITHOUT* knowing how to use the skills like Defensive Offensive.
It was so painful, but now I'm having a blast.
Thanks for this. I bought it yesterday and plan on playing it at the weekend. I'll be sure to purchase dodge right away.
Thanks for the guide. Hadn't played in a while and this caught me up to speed. Definitely taught me a couple new tricks too.
Very helpful video as always Chip! Thanks for making this. Loved your LP of Rising.
Thanks a lot for explaining the dodge and blade cancel, now I feel pumped to play V.Hard =D
Regards
Thanks as always, Chip. I'll definitely use this as a primer when I pick up the game soon.
Holy shit I just beat this on very hard, and I had no idea you could move while in blade mode. Thanks!
good video mate, learned a thing or two, especially pleased with the dodge combo continuation, and the blade move cancellation
I pushed the stick to the right because he IS TO THE RIGHT OF RAIDEN.
I love how chip talks.
Thank you.
Purchased the game on PC because of your exquisite LP. And this will help me possibly not suck at it.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! dude i was rolling on the floor like my grandma in the blade wolf fight because i didn't know how to parry
i cannot thank you enough
i really like this game, but i wish there was a lock-on button...
wtf did you watch the fucking video?
you ever heard of a joke?
Yea, your comments!
Or4ANGEpm
ah yes, haha, you got me. very clever and witty.
It seems as though this video was posted by the official MGR page on Facebook.
Nice video, by the way; despite the fact that the game is pretty self explanatory, the dodge and blade cancelling is a nice thing to know.
was stuck on armstrong because i didn't know you could heal
Thank you, I can now have actual fun with this game!
Thanks for this, I was getting mauled badly until your video helped the combat click for me. This game is amazing, can't believe I let it gather dust on my Steam library for so long.
Thank you very much, now i understand why i had so much difficulty when i tried to play it, guess i will be giving a second try.
Very nice, this will just make my game more enjoyable, thanks.
Thank you! I pretty easily beat Wolf, but felt like I didn't understand most mechanics that it tried to teach me. That helped a lot
I brute forced thru this game on Normal without even knowing you could dodge and lock on a specific target. Time to do Hard after learning this
Thank you, random guy from 9 years ago.
Did not know about walking while in blade-mode.
That's so helpful, thanks.
Excellent video.
I found the tutorial on parry left me scratching my head as to if I had successfully managed to parry even once.
You've cleared everything up for me.
Can't wait to play this later.
I learned a of things on my own, but didn't know a lot of the moves, until watching the LP. I really hope this get's a sequel it's just so awesome!
Thank you very much for this explanation. It was very helpful!
