If you wan't an even bigger battle Pennsic War in Butler County, Pennsylvania. It is a medieval reenactment event where over 10 thousand people attend regularly. Each event has a big field battle where every fighter goes onto a field and fights in a giant team vs team battle. The record for people on the field at one time was three thousand in one big battle.
Most people reacting to this sport seem to be disappointed that the swords aren't doing much, and then they basically dismiss it as a sport beyond just punching each other. Glad to see a better take
Almost like swords aren't for fighting armor, and we have entire encyclopedias of just different types of melee weapons, that all have a purpose, time and place.
I'm mostly dismissing it because most of them seem to have absolutely no clue what they are doing, and mostly just mill around. It looks like a middle school soccer match for the mentally disabled for all the skill being shown. And the one team that does, plays it like a rugby match, not a fight... because the rules are a joke.
@@Benw8888 well real anti armor weapons were not used in tournaments back in the day also, the nobility was not trying to end each other, even on a real battle field they would try to capture each other for ransom. Mowing down poorly armored common folks was what knights were really about most of history. One of the most amusing tidbits, European nobility really got mad at the Swiss because they did not try to capture knights in war they flat out ended them, the cowardly nobility (aka Knights) just stopped messing with the Swiss and went back to fighting other nations that played by the 'rules' of mowing down poorly armored commoners only. They even made laws to make weapons very good vs armor illegal in warfare example was crossbows were not to be used vs other Christians for centuries. They were used however vs muslims etc.
@@xomox5316Do you realize that this kind of plate armor did not exist for most of medieval period? Also no one really respected all those ridiculous Pope's decrees, because you know jousts and tournaments were banned as well, lol.
An old joke I heard about Chivalry. “Some say chivalry is dead. I held the door open for a woman the other day and she told me she didn’t need a man to open doors for her. She insulted my honor so I challenged her to single combat. Chivalry isn’t dead, but that lady is.

I love watching our sport grow! As a martial artist myself... I thought it would be easy too... I was wrong. I have more injuries from the first year in this sport than my entire martial arts career lol Well done video!
Good news! it's not nearly as hard to do as it was 10 years ago when BOTN regularly was sending folks to the hospital each year. Still there's a reason I never did this and had to medically retire from SCA Armored Combat and it's not nearly this contactfull. Still 15 years of full contact waster fighting did it's toll. Carolina Carnage was always cool to talk to.
We were always a bit dismissive about reenactors in the sport fencing world, but one of our biggest meanest Sabruers joined an English Civil War for an anniversary battle in my nearest city Worcester, and said he had never been so exhausted and terrified in his life, post-skirmish! Interesting to see the tactical side of this sport, which I thought was just a bunch of big blokes hacking hell out of each other, and the comradeship it engenders.
Would love to see a harnischfechten episode with a more technical approach to armored combat. Matt Easton the head instructor of a Hema club in England will host a seminar called "The Armoured Fighter" the 3 to 4 of March I believe. Maybe that's an occasion?
This video popped up randomly, but I LOVE IT!!! This is one of the best videos on this medieval combat I've ever seen. Everything from the high-level group dynamics to the tactics, to things like discussing livelihood of merchants and laborers' work surrounding these events, to the dynamics of the literal "fighting for power" (aka getting hired). As someone who used to do this for *a lot of* fun, Thanks for making this! Great Job!
There's a lot of details about tournaments in actual history that are far more complicated than the folks you asked said, but I appreciate it can be hard to get stuff across when asked in a middle of an event and when you later have to edit it out to make a fun piece of content to consume. Also the modern 'medieval combat' scene (be it IMCF,BoN or ACL etc.) is a modern combat sport that has a lot of similarities to some forms of historical tournaments, it's not a direct continuation. It's absolutely great stuff though and I'm really happy to see it featured on your channel(hope you do a similar video of a hema tournament though :D ) Their weapons and armor are also of differing levels of historical accuracy for the modern game for purposes of safety and longterm durability. However I dont doubt if you transported a knight from the 14th,15th or 16th century that they'd complain about the changes to the armor for the purposes of a tournament(and we know that even in period there were disagreements on what exact get up would be best for war and in what context etc.). If you look up 'The Art of the Game: Hastiludes and Chivalric Competition in the Late Medieval Period' you can find a great lecture on historical tournaments done by Adam Franti(on the lansing longsword youtube channel) that goes into a fair bit of detail about these historical events. He also lists a number of resources for further reading and research for anyone interested.
i'm calling it now. this is the transition point, where Seth slowly changes his content from martial arts stuff to headwear fashion reviews, tutorials, etc.
@holyknightthatpwns it's only that heavy because they make it extra thick for added protection, because they don't make it properly. Actual historical armor was actually light. From 30-50 pounds. They could make it that light because they knew how to shape the armor to keep it away from the body to absorb impact and deflect blows. This armor needs to be extra thick and heavy because it doesn't do that.
This video may be hazardous to my health and my wallet. Because I have a sudden urge to buy a suit of armor and a spiked flail, then join a local tournament, where I will inevitably have my dome caved in. Don't worry, ladies and gentlemen, I'll report back to publish my findings in this comment section (assuming I survive).
@brunocerra1850 Oh, for sure! I'd never compete in any martial art without a decent amount of training under my belt. I have trained in MT and BJJ for years, but as far as weapons training, I have a little bit of Kali under my belt, so I'd definitely need a lot of coaching. With that said, it looks like a blast! Exhausting and terrifying, but still a lot of fun as well.
Complete long shot, but Seth I would love to see you find and cover a session learning Sumayaw ang Kamatayan (Yaw Yan for short). Its a filipino striking martial art. Not the typical Eskrima stick fighting that is universally known, but much more similar to Muay Thai and Kick boxing with their own style of kicks and strikes. Ive seen Dojos scattered across the US and would love to see it get the credit it deserves and brought to light the same way Eskrima is. Love the content Seth, hooe you read this!
You've probably gotten a pretty good insight on why your average's knight's training was maybe 20% weapon training/riding and 80% PT and endurance training. "Ah, the weather's nice today. Time to do a 10k in full armor before breakfast."
I feel like Buhurt is more just people that want to get a workout, fight like hell, and actually do more than just LARP (while there is some LARP still involved). Seems like a really fun sport, would love to get involved.
When I was at the huge Renaissance Festival in Michigan, my friend and I got talking to one of the fighters and one question we asked him was if actual nobility ever participated. He told us that the Prince of Morocco participated and that he had his own retinue and that they are terrifying to fight.
I wonder if that prince ever visits any of the European reenactment festivals or if they just do actual medieval inspired combat sports tournaments with titles and prize awards.🤔 I'malso very confident that there are plenty of lesser European nobility that is enjoying themselves with these sports and/or reenactment.
I'm new to the SCA which does a light(er) form of armoured combat, but also renaissance type fencing, which eventually became the regulated sport of olympic fencing. I do the fencing, not the armoured. It's such a blast, and I've love to try armoured at least once some day, but the cost of armour wouldnt be worth it for me. I'm 130 pounds so I'd definitely break something if I tried.
Did you know that there is actually a world championship for this sport, called the Battle of the Nations? It’s held every year in a different country, and it features teams from all over the world competing in various categories, such as duels, group battles, and mass battles. The largest category is the 150 vs 150, where 300 fighters clash in a chaotic melee that lasts for an hour. Imagine being in the middle of that! I think this sport is fascinating and exciting, and I admire the skill and courage of the fighters. I would love to try it someday, but I’m not sure if I could handle the pain and the bruises. Maybe I’ll just stick to watching it from a safe distance. Thanks for the awesome video!
Seth my favorite content of yours is any armored combat. Please keep showing up to events like this and just give these people some well deserved camera time. The people of the internet deserve to see the struggle they put themselves through.
Cool video! We had some Aussies make the trip out for this last year I think. Would be awesome to see you do some Harnishfechten, which is more the sort of armoured combat you'd do in a life or death situation rather than a tournament.
The sounds of armor clashing against armor are EPIC and pull at those strings in your heart for glory. Sounds that provide a glimpse back to medieval times. Awesome sauce all around!
I’m curious as to how many of these people are HEMA practitioners. They don’t seem to be using HEMA techniques in their fighting i.e footwork, proper cutting technique etc. it kinda just looks like a brawl with armor
There are HEMA practitioners that are actually practicing and sparring in full plate armor using proper deadly techniques which are illegal here obviously. I remember a yt channel where one of two guys had a wooden leg and still was quite proficient in sparring and I bet would destroy every buhurt caveman in theoretical realistic scenario. Shame that those channels get overshadowed by these mindless brawls that further skewer image of historical fighting to the public.
Exactly my thoughts. I also see nobody daggering each other in the face. This is just some MMA in Armour but has not much to do with medieval combat. For example you see often how these competitors leg kick each other in a martial arts way. Makes no sense also.
that last bit is soooo important,in training especially. Most guy just want to shine and dont take care of their partners, themselves, or their opponents and wonder why there is no longevity
Guys this is not correct representation of medieval warfare as for armor combat you should use proper antiarmor weapons, so can you imagine the damage when proper weapons were used. (poleaxe, mace, hammers) Ofc that will be too dangerous to use. Still this is fun to watch.
@@matthewgreen6131 with titanium and cabon fiber, it is medivial inspired, not representation. Also nobody is covering ever every hit is face tanked, I doubt that is how they fight in medivial times, but it is night time here so I can not search historical sources on turnament rules.
@@jatsantsa some people use titanium, It is lighter but not as strong as steel, I use steel. Also carbon fiber….. I do not know of anyone who uses carbon fiber anything. I do not know what you mean by covering every face tank…. Also the riles are the same as was done in medieval tournaments. We do have some extra safety things they didnt. For example we have small bars over the eyes to reduce the chance of loosing an eye, Also we have something called a “simon strap” Named after a fighter who had his head caved in, It is a strap that attaches the helmet to the chest piece in order to reduce the chance of the helmet coming off. Also back to an earlier thing you said. Maces and pole axes are more then allowed, I ise an axe myself, They have thier own downsides. A mace has a weight limit (they did as well for medieval tournaments) and the pole axes make it hard should someone get you in a grapple, You seem them more in 12v 12 but sometimes you will see the wingman use them in 5s. Hammers are both allowed for one major reason. Medieval tournaments were jot designed to kill each other, just like we are not wanting to kill each other. Not to say there isnt a ton of damage but the goal is not murder, Sorry if that upsets you.
@@matthewgreen6131 You are not upeseting me at all, we have so far normal exchange of arguments. I have few contras: 1) Carbon fiber shield are mention and showed directly in video. 2) Dude poleaxe is not just an axe, there is usualy hammer or beak part to defeat the armor. For sure do not want to use that for sport. 3) I never saw maces in any video from these kind events. I assume axes could have more mass allowed? Would you provide number allowed with your organisation, please? 4) By face tank I meant that there are not defending them self and just eat blows.
@@jatsantsa ahh I get it now, Ok I do not use shields hut yes some people put carbon fiber on it but that does nothing for the effectiveness of it, It just lets it last longer before breaking compared to just wood. A pole axe is defined by a certain lengthening with a particular type of head, same with halberd, long axe, 2 handed axe etc. maces are a good go to for starting fighters because they take less skill to use but as you get skills most people swap it out for an axe or chopper (you are correct they both have more mass per surface. As for the weights it varies depending on the league, I actually have a link to the HMB weapons rules/weights, I will link for you. My team fights in all leagues. As for the face tank, yes armor works and it is sometimes more effective to take a hit then to give up a grab. On that note there are fighters that you do jot want to take hits from. I have this guy on my team who hits like a damn daemon. My first time fighting him he ruptured my kidney thru full plate. Also keep in mind that your helmet is one of the tankiest parts on you so it can take a hit. hmbia.info/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Technical-and-Authentic-requirements_V2-0-1.pdf
No way in hell any of the armour there weighed sixty pounds, probably more like 40-50, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but in terms of stress on the body, it’s extremely noticeable. I just can’t believe what he said about his armour, my 16th century Brunswicker HRE armour only weighs 45, and its full plate with mail and gambeson, arnet, and articulated Sabatons.
@@hegotnoenemies like yea there were warpicks and hammers to bash on armor in battles but it wasnt this entirely mindless WWE wrestling Grappling and stuff was important, yes; fights did end in 2 armored opponents scuffling to get the other on the ground to stick a dagger between the gaps But they could literally just take a metal pan instead of their "sword" and theyd have a better result in this, theres no real finesse
Tournament fighting has always been men in armor fighting with blunted weapons. I'm guessing they would've had restrictions at those times as well given the people competing would likely have been nobility and any real injury would be catastrophic to the family and their fief.
I love watching battles. Especially when it's a tournament with teams from different countries competing. It's like hockey without the ice and game. Brutally awesome. Actually imagine if it was on ice skates? Lol
Wish you could have seen Simon Rohrich there, who is the reason why all the helmets have the strap on the back of the helm to ensure they don't come off the head. He took an axe to the skull after his helm came off but was fine afterwards coming out of surgery to repair his fractured skull.
I do Renaissance Faires and there are some full armor fights that happen there. At the one Faire there was a match where a woman was hit in the head so hard that she was knocked completely out. Her helmet was so dented by the impact that it took half an hour to hammer back into shape..... BUT SHE FELT BAD because she felt like she didn't give the guy a good enough fight.
Try Belegarth next, granted they are foam fighters, but as someone that has done both armored combat and HEMA fencing. I was surprised by how much of a martial art it's developed into and there are a lot of misconceptions about it.

Thanks so much for coming and especially for showcasing our womens and femme fighters (that’s me throwing the deuce at 22:24 ✌️). We’re so glad the sport is growing and can’t wait for folks to check us out and join in. Buhurt is love, baby! 💕⚔️
Edit: if you come to any other buhurt events, reach out: your first funny medieval hat is on me ✨
If you wan't an even bigger battle Pennsic War in Butler County, Pennsylvania. It is a medieval reenactment event where over 10 thousand people attend regularly. Each event has a big field battle where every fighter goes onto a field and fights in a giant team vs team battle. The record for people on the field at one time was three thousand in one big battle.
Holy shit
that's a lotta armour
Most people reacting to this sport seem to be disappointed that the swords aren't doing much, and then they basically dismiss it as a sport beyond just punching each other. Glad to see a better take
Almost like swords aren't for fighting armor, and we have entire encyclopedias of just different types of melee weapons, that all have a purpose, time and place.
@@Propulus I agree! The events where they only have knights with swords should re-evaluate lol
😂😂
You know its going to be fun when the event has "WARNING: Broken weapons may fly at the audience".
Thank you for taking the time to shine a positive light on what we do. Dominus was happy to trade a couple of whacks. You're welcome anytime. Maybe join us in Germany this fall. 😊
Happy to see you had a fun and most importantly safe experience! 🙂
Safe, and most importantly fun experience ;)
I love watching our sport grow! As a martial artist myself... I thought it would be easy too... I was wrong. I have more injuries from the first year in this sport than my entire martial arts career lol
Well done video!
I dont understand why Sensei Seth only has 370k Subs. This is the best martial arts channel on youtube.
That ending got me
Good news! it's not nearly as hard to do as it was 10 years ago when BOTN regularly was sending folks to the hospital each year.
It's absolutely great stuff though and I'm really happy to see it featured on your channel(hope you do a similar video of a hema tournament though :D )
Their weapons and armor are also of differing levels of historical accuracy for the modern game for purposes of safety and longterm durability.
It was really awesome having you at the event, thank you so much for spreading the gospel of "Buhurt is Love!"
i'm calling it now. this is the transition point, where Seth slowly changes his content from martial arts stuff to headwear fashion reviews, tutorials, etc.
“It doesn’t stop a concussion, but it stops the damage to the face.”😮
Wonderful video showcasing the sport i love properly. Thanks Seth
i love seeing people in 300 pounds of metal casing beat each other
Only about 70-100lbs depending on your kit
@@zoltanleafy8746 In the video they were saying it was closer to 65
@@holyknightthatpwns
some guy said 50 pounds.
@zoltanleafy8746 not even close to that.
Seth WILL become the first man in history to run out of martial arts to try.
Absolutely loved that little speech the guy made right before the end, real lovely
Ultimate Self Defense Championship: medieval edition.
So sad I missed you at the event! Thanks for coming!
Please do , clubs are always looking for new fighters
Please go to some training sessions before expending money on armor
@brunocerra1850 Oh, for sure! I'd never compete in any martial art without a decent amount of training under my belt. I have trained in MT and BJJ for years, but as far as weapons training, I have a little bit of Kali under my belt, so I'd definitely need a lot of coaching. With that said, it looks like a blast! Exhausting and terrifying, but still a lot of fun as well.
Could be wrong but I don't think blunt weapons are allowed, could do more damage
@@HLGJammer Could be. I just think flails look epic, but I could get down with whatever weapons are allowed (if I've trained with them extensively).
@@TheElbowMerchant understandable. I inquired about using a hammer of some sort once (nickname is Jammer) but that's what I was told.
Some of the biggest, friendliest, wholesome people just wailing on each other and having a blast ❤

THIS IS THE MOST METAL THING IVE SEEN IN YEARS
You've probably gotten a pretty good insight on why your average's knight's training was maybe 20% weapon training/riding and 80% PT and endurance training. "Ah, the weather's nice today. Time to do a 10k in full armor before breakfast."
Thanks for coming out. Got to see some of our friends in the vid.
I feel like Buhurt is more just people that want to get a workout, fight like hell, and actually do more than just LARP (while there is some LARP still involved). Seems like a really fun sport, would love to get involved.
Thanks for coming out and highlighting our sport! Buhurt is love!
It's the sword + grate-like helmets that give me the heebie jeebies, I like having functioning eyeballs.
Thrusts and sharp points are forbidden. If you wanna poke someone with steel HEMA is your only viable choice.
Your description of the big guys' vs little guys' jobs on the team is remarkably like how rugby positions work. It definitely tracks.
One of your coolest videos yet :D
Love the topic and the people at the event. Just so positive, open and friendly.
When I was at the huge Renaissance Festival in Michigan, my friend and I got talking to one of the fighters and one question we asked him was if actual nobility ever participated. He told us that the Prince of Morocco participated and that he had his own retinue and that they are terrifying to fight.
I wonder if that prince ever visits any of the European reenactment festivals or if they just do actual medieval inspired combat sports tournaments with titles and prize awards.🤔
I'malso very confident that there are plenty of lesser European nobility that is enjoying themselves with these sports and/or reenactment.
Lets say medival inspired combat tournaments. Because this has not a lot to do with how medival tournaments actually were. 😅
It looks fun tho.
He is one step away from Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) and it needs to happen
This is way cooler than I thought it would ever be.
Awesome!
Where do I sign up? I need to start doing this immediately.
Seth my favorite content of yours is any armored combat. Please keep showing up to events like this and just give these people some well deserved camera time. The people of the internet deserve to see the struggle they put themselves through.
Shout out from IAC Rat Pack
At the end of the month, I'm travelling up to Newcastle, Australia to photograph my first Buhurt tournament. I'm super pumped. Thanks for the video.
Can we pleeeaasseeee get sensei seth to try HEMA next? That'd be soo cool
he did about a year ago the video is called "I Tried 14th Century Sword Fighting"
@@christopherrowley7506 o well thank you
Your videos amaze me Seth, great job! Entertaining, informative, and truly unique!
Americans trying to learn european history is funny af
Cool video! We had some Aussies make the trip out for this last year I think. Would be awesome to see you do some Harnishfechten, which is more the sort of armoured combat you'd do in a life or death situation rather than a tournament.
dang... thats alot of neckbeards
The sounds of armor clashing against armor are EPIC and pull at those strings in your heart for glory. Sounds that provide a glimpse back to medieval times. Awesome sauce all around!
The first video Seth did on HEMA he went to some psychos, i'm very happy he is now with proffesional PEOPLE.
This caveman brawling is far from proffesional or historically accurate.
'The big guys interfere with grapples while the little guys run around and bother people with sticks'
I love it; they're playing into their strengths.
It is not a representation of medieval combat because it isn’t supposed to be. It is a representation of medieval tournaments.
I have few contras:
1) Carbon fiber shield are mention and showed directly in video.
I just can’t believe what he said about his armour, my 16th century Brunswicker HRE armour only weighs 45, and its full plate with mail and gambeson, arnet, and articulated Sabatons.
hate this "americanisation" of actual medieval combat; this is just beating each other with sticks, theres nothing medieval about this
When the meta in Medieval MMA is to use a buckler to bash your opponent into CTE while using fibreglass shields/armor, I gotta agree.
@@hegotnoenemies like yea there were warpicks and hammers to bash on armor in battles but it wasnt this entirely mindless WWE wrestling
Grappling and stuff was important, yes; fights did end in 2 armored opponents scuffling to get the other on the ground to stick a dagger between the gaps
But they could literally just take a metal pan instead of their "sword" and theyd have a better result in this, theres no real finesse
Tournament fighting has always been men in armor fighting with blunted weapons. I'm guessing they would've had restrictions at those times as well given the people competing would likely have been nobility and any real injury would be catastrophic to the family and their fief.
@@kriegjaeger but they still fought as if the weapons were sharp, thats the difference
Thank you for this! Watched Battle of the nations years ago and it was mental!! This showed some interesting tactics and history!

I love watching battles. Especially when it's a tournament with teams from different countries competing. It's like hockey without the ice and game. Brutally awesome. Actually imagine if it was on ice skates? Lol
Thanks! This was one of the most amazing things I saw in a while. Didn't know something like those tournaments even existed
Great, GREAT, piece. And possibly your best closer ever.
Awesome video! Super glad you could come out and get some whacks in.
Wish you could have seen Simon Rohrich there, who is the reason why all the helmets have the strap on the back of the helm to ensure they don't come off the head. He took an axe to the skull after his helm came off but was fine afterwards coming out of surgery to repair his fractured skull.
Medieval combat is the most bonkers sport I've ever seen and I'm so glad it exists. My hat's off to anyone competing in this.
the magnetic feeling it is the human desire to become a medieval warrior XD
Although chaotic seeing all these medieval nerds fight all ironclad is pretty wholesome.

Dude! Totally awesome! I think ICY MIKE Would be vicious in this! LOL
This was so much fun to watch! Thanks for sharing Sensei!
I rememeber finding this stuff when I was like 19 and I’m 29 now. It’s still the dopest dope, I’ve ever smoked.
Imagine standing in line at TSA and the guy in front of you is standing there in Armor... Dude gets for sure pulled out for additional screening 😂
“even the hot dogs come with armor” that was fucking gold
Never heard of this tournament. Crazy that it is so close to me here in Charleston. I’ll be on the lookout to head to the upstate to see this live.
Check us out we do a bunch of small events throughout the year. And this is every February
Loved to see you coming back to this
Getting hit by sword when you are wearing armor is less dangerous, than a punch.
Mad respect for the lady getting out there and swinging steel!
Try Belegarth next, granted they are foam fighters, but as someone that has done both armored combat and HEMA fencing. I was surprised by how much of a martial art it's developed into and there are a lot of misconceptions about it.
Well i think this is pretty far from medieval combat. I see nobody daggering each other in the face.
