Germans build the best cars, and the e39 is the pinnacle of German automotive engineering brilliance. A spectacular achievement that has stood the test of time for over two decades thus far and is securely ensconced in the pantheon of the 'world's greatest automobiles'. Lucky are those who own these precious gems.
It was 2003 when I seen the first E39 ///M5 and it was love at firs site. Id have dreams about owning the one. The months then turned to years and I never forgot about that car. I owned many muscle cars and still couldn't get the E39 ///M5 out of my head. Now I own 4. I am hooked and can't stop buying well maintained enthusiast owned older BMW's.
***** The vanos issue is mainly an m5 issue, the rest of the 5 series dont have vanos issues. But somethings to look for is make sure the suspicion stuff has been dealt with or else itll eat through tires, and vibrate like no ones business at 80 mph. And for the 540, make sure the seals have been done. my e39 when i bought it left puddles of power steering fluid, and lost of oil stains, so that was a pain to deal with, especially the rear main seal. And for a 540 if the guides haven't been done yet, they usually go at about 150k miles and cost 2k to replace. I believe the 530i is a very reliable car though.
Harry_11 yea, i miss my e39 so much. Im actually planning on getting an m5 soon, but this time im nor rushing it and getting the first one i see on craigslist like i did with my 540, im actually going to take my time and find the perfect one.
Karim nassef it's really just the best ever made BMW. I have a 2008 X5 not M. That shit has sooo much problems. It has 108k miles. My M5 had 103k miles and nothing that bad has happened yet except the A/C condenser.
So, I guess this is the perfect comment area for some advice. Having a 33-yo crisis. Need a E39, but dont know shit about which year model, engine, etc etc I should get. Only that M-specs looks great and that manual is as good as automatic for me. Advice?
1997-1999 are all 528is or 540is. Known as pre-facelift with older style headlights, bumpers, tail lights, steering wheels, and some electronics. They are the cheapest but usually the most beat up and the last sporty. 2000 came the M5, in addition to the 528i and 540i. Sports car. But still pre-facelift. 2001-2003 had 525i, 530i, 540i, and M5. These cars are updated and are more common with sports packages. I would recommend a 2001+ M5 (if funds permit).
Thank you. Yeah, an M5 would be the ultimate goal. Though I read alot of about broken VANOS and stuff. Apparently very expensive do fix. Are there any more "weaknesses" I should know about? Also, e39 have problems with rust....?
The VANOS issue is largely over-rated. They last a long, long time. 200-250k miles usually. Then $1000 rebuild maybe. They can get rust, for sure. Rocker panels and trunk lids seem to be the most common. Those are cars that have been driven through winters.
Christian Andersson as my dad owns an E39 he has told me that : Manuals are a lot better than automatics Petrol M-sport 528i 530i 530d Are very good I hope this helps ?
Ikr I think the same goes for any executive car especially one as nicely balanced as the E39, that is the most tasteful examples are always the stock ones

Damn! Do Euros just hate style 19's? I didn't see one set. They're legit BBS rims with forged centers and look great on any BMW.

I made a mistake selling my e39.. yea it was unreliable, but nothing put a smile on my face more than that car.
I have owned a e39 since 2008. It's been very reliable, if u keep it clean and keep good maintenance. I still own it today and it's the best car ever

+Kourosh Tashvishi Yes.
Not a single pre-facelift? :(
5:00 and 7:17 But probably more since most people convert their prefacelift to a facelift.

Ace Cafe just off the North Circular nr Alperton
Oooh, a fair few abominations there. Why mess with aesthetic perfection? Reminds me of that 'crying' mk4 golf advert :-)
