Kingsley Bob. While i would love to tell you that a 5 series will work for you. I can't. At 6.7 u will have some space issues. If there's no one sitting behind you , then it may work but if carrying 4 is something that have to do then. You may have to look at a 7 series. And that would be the LI version as well if BMW s are the only option for ya. Thanks for the question. Hope this helps. 😀👍👍👍
I have a 2003 530i. Daily drive it...very solid reliable car. Like a little tank...great quality everywhere except for the ridiculous cup holders and the usual pixel issues. I highly recommend the e39!
Kunu M5 i would have to totally agree with you. I had the e39 528i manual montreal blue. Loved that car so much. This was a sweet memory lane walk for me. Thxx for the comment. Hope you've also subscribed to the show
Yass!!! Those darn cup holders! I had ten changes so many times under warranty. After warranty, I gave up. I've also learned to drive holding my coffee sometimes. Lol
late 90s-early 2000s were the golden era for cars if you ask me. Just enough electronic stuff to make life easy, but none that we don't want or need and just breaks. I own a E46 and its just so low maintenance as long as you take good care of it. Been thinking about getting a newer bimmer but in the end i was like nah itll just be unreliable. On top of that i dont like the way new bimmers look, the E39 and E46 have real unique styling, newer bmws are well, just fat lol.
I have to agree specially concerning design! All cars that had earlier generations in that time were much better looking and designed, Opel vectra, Honda Civic, Mitsubishi Galant Lanancer...
I have a 1999 528i automatic. 21 years later and a host of routine maintenance and repairs, the car runs great. Other than plastic parts that seem to break due to old-age brittleness, the engine and transmission are solid. Watching your video has renewed my enthusiasm of owning a "cult following" car. Sadly, I rarely see any E39s driving around the L.A. area.
That means you'll always look unique Rodney.😉😉😁😁👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾. Roll out the E39 with pride ma friend . Love that car. I saw one yesterday and I had to ask the fella about it. Sweet sweet piece of kit . Thanks for sharing though most of all
I love the 540i variant. With it's 4.4L V8, it is like a very perfect mix of the affordable 5-series and the powerful M5. While it lacks the superior handling, and a bit of the power of the M5, it still packs the same feeling of a roaring V8. It is just an unbelievably satisfying ride on the highways with it's low sounding engine. It makes roadtrips a real pleasure even on the usually so painful 80km/h roads with little visibility and no opportunities to pass traffic. The sound and feel of sitting in the sturdy e39 with a V8 is just something you can not outdo. Also it is just so relaxing to drive, everything is so effortless. The steptronic automatic is so smooth even when 20+ years old, it switches gears like it's reading my mind. The engine has loads of power even on really low revs, which means you can cruise past 99% of other cars without even revving the engine.
i second that fully Sami. trhere's nothing else that i can add to that to make what you said any better. sorry for the late reply. i do try to reply to each one. hope all is well with you during this time.
Ohh YES!!! this guy is the VERY one to drive E39, the way he speaks, the energy, the style, the smile, everything!!! you can NOT go wrong, please keep on talking about BMW !!!! thumbs UP !!!

Me neither. Both mine had/have the rather fiddly up/down controls for digital temp, which means taking your eyes off the road for too long. My E60 has 3 dials, however, they're not clearly labelled, so again, you have to take your eyes off the road for too long (e.g. the temp dial doesn't have a blue - red band running outside the dial, like most cars have)

Damn Cup Holders Breaking, Damn Pixels missing on the Interior Dash Lights and Radio, Damn Coolant Check Light due to Malfunctions with the Expansion Tank, Damn Seats that are crooked, Damn for using like 7+ quarts of Mobil 1 0W-40 Synthetic Oil Change ..... Yeah, I still got my E39 BImmer 530i Sedan, 2003 made in Dingolfing, Germany, with M Sport package and 19 inch chrome rims with tinted windows all around... keeping it clean, not like other E39 bimmer owners who put stupid M badging unless its an M5, Dinan Badging, unless it has that upgrade.....but great E39 wood trim and with the nice velvet material on the storage compartments on the side door, keeping it a timeless classic though.... Whenever i go to the BMW dealership in my Clean 2003 Bimmer E39, all the E60 and F10 and even 3 Series E90 owners waiting in the Service Center look at me with awe and amazement on how clean my E39 is and looks better than their Bimmers.....
AWE39V8 !!!! But what he’s saying is true. People who put M badging on their non-M cars are almost the definition of cancer. He has the right to be a little narcissistic if he’s doing something right hahah.
Great to see you enjoying a quality car. BMW's of this period were all seemingly designed with the enthusiast in mind in terms of being so easy and enjoyable to work on.

I got my 2002 530i with a 5 speed manual a few weeks ago. And im amazed how well the car drives and how clean it looks for a car with 190k miles on it. the body is straight, the paint is perfect and the interior looks brand new. the engine runs smooth with no leaks and the transmission is such a joy to shift. the only complaint i have with the car is that when i have drinks in the upholder its impossible to adjust the AC. and when you live in south east texas like i do. its kind of a draw back.
Micah Holland. That's awesome Micah. Is this your first BMW?? If it is then i will tell you now. You are finish for life. BMW s has a way of holding you. Great video. We've had our BMW 528i E39 touring black for over 10 years, my dad brought it from Germany in 2008, being made in 2000 meaning the car was already 8 years old at that time but STILL held its prestige at being absolutely timeless. From the highest quality interior (with so many unnecessary functions that you but got used to so quickly that ever since you sat in other competitive cars they felt so cheap and lame), over comfortability and speed to performance. My parents now look for an update to a newer BMW because just as me, my dad has a sweet spot for this brand. Nonetheless our E39 still surpasses a lot the expectations of other way younger cars and is still in a good condition, making me consider to inherit this baby.
You sir are a scholar and a gentleman. Thank you for reminding me that My 2000 528i that was purchased brand new and gifted to me 5 years ago by the best mother ever is a keeper. I thought about selling it or trade in on a new or used car no thank you on a new BMW and I couldn’t find a better used car than mine if my life depended on it. So after surfing the internet seeing your you tube video and finding FCP euro are you kidding me. Quality parts at that price and videos to walk you through it good gosh it’s too easy
Ha ha ha . You totally have a gem there Meila. The E39 will never die my friend . Keep her . love her . Drive her . Glad to hear u enjoyed the show. It's one of our favorite. 👌🏾👌🏾👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾🙂🙂🙂
Missing my 98 e 39, sort of. Safe. Built like a German tank with lots of lightweight aluminum suspension bits. Bullet proof engine, but watch for failing plastic and rubber, cooling system overhaul. Awesome, comfortable drive if you can withstand repairs. Mine had noted window regulator and door handle issues. Good heat and a surprisingly good winter car despite rwd. A failing catalytic converter caused me to throw in the towel.
Great video! And excellent condition E39! Just sold my E39 540i manual and got my young adulthood dream car, an E39 M5. The E39 design is timeless and built with quality, love them!

@@letsrollout7307 got it in Titanium Silver. Wish I could find a blue, my 540i was biarritz blue. But Titanium Silver will do as it matches my E46 325i. I also wouldn’t mind the color of your E39, it’s a beauty!

Well said! If you have a great chassis, nice steering and a sweet manual shift, you can still have fun on the road even with less than 200hp. Manufactures don't even give you the choice now. You have to have auto whether you like it or not. Of course you get more bhp in modern cars even with a little turbo 4 cyl but I'd argue much less driver involvement. Sometimes the simplest way is the best way, as the E39 is still proving.
I have to agree with you on those points. 100% i refuse to sell my E60 550 i just because it's manual. She's been with me for over 9 years now and the fact that i can change my gears was enough for me to keep her. Love her. 😀😀😀 thanks for sharing you thoughts with us soundseeker63. See yiu agaun soon. I had two e39 540s before moving on to two e60 550s an 07 and 09 both had sport package but the 07 didn't have the M sport body kit because it was pre-LCI. E39 wise i had a 97 540i and a 99 sport 540i. As far as the pixel issue, all the e39s have them and I had them all fixed by BMW dealers for free. I don't know if you can still do it but back then all you had to do was email BMW of north of America and tell them that your gauge cluster has pixel issues and they would set you up with the manager of your local BMW dealer to fix it for free even if the car was out of warranty and you were the millionth owner of the car. Look it up or ask on a e39 forum,I think it's still doable.
I owned one 1997 e39 and spark plugs, brakes and air filter is one thing, but ive done a few things that stress me out when working my e39. My favorite car ever to work on is volvo 850.
so tell us what was some of those things that stressed you out on the E39???? i love it when others share there experiences because other viewers learn as well. thanks
kingofjamrock. You are so right. They get under our skin in the same way. Lol. Ha ha ha. My E39 issue was the sunroof i tried replacing some parts myself and boy. It was never the same again. But i was trying to be cheap. Ha ha ha. Wrong part to do that with. Good luck on the E38. 😀😀
ironically, i haaaatd the e39s when they replaced the e34. But after that chris bangle shit 5 series, which replaced the e39, I fell madly in love with the e39. Here in japan, i have an e46 320. But im gonna get an e39 next. they are here in immaculate condition with low kilometers in abundance, for dirt cheap
blackpassenger the e39 is simply amazing. I've had 2 of them. The 528 had enough power and was extremely fuel efficient. I've driven many times from here in toronto to newyork with only 1 tank of gas.

I haven't tried the opening of the windows, but you don't have to put the key in and hold it, you simply press and hold the BMW symbol on your key and you get the same effect... many meters away from the car, or as far as the remote will work (including your key to chin effect).
Wow my 5 series is also 16 years old now and I bought it new. I had sometimes felt like I was driving an antique when I am next to the newer models. lol. Thanks for giving me a newfound appreciation of my little clunker!

@@letsrollout7307 I got it from a friend he was gonna junk it but I saw it’s potential. I’m not sure cause it has the m badge on the steering wheel and I see e39 on all the parts I take off. It has the 6 disc cd changer. Idk if the original owner picked what he wanted in the car, cause I can’t find one that looks like mine. It had the stock bumpers till I changed the for the m sport bumbers. I see people on RUclips changing the one you have with the black leather so I thought it was sought after or something
I had a manual E39 528i but sold that, as it was getting old, for a 6-speed manual E60 530i. To make amends though, I bought an E39 M5 a year later as well.
Thanks !! The thing with the M5, it's not _really_ an everyday car because it uses so much fuel, regardless of how much money you have to spend on it and you don't want to stick too many miles on it. Mine's on 88k miles and is a '99 year car in Moonstone (?) blue.
@@letsrollout7307 Heey, thanks for the fast reply. No its not, i legit have a E30 325i M-tech 2 original. So im no stranger to bmw, specially Here in Croatia, everybody drives them.
A very nicely presented video! I have a 96 model e39 535i in my fleet of cars (535i is a 3.5 v8, 173kw/232hp), almost fully optioned, sadly it's an auto but it's still a very nice drive. Enough power to get up and move when you want to, with a remus sports exhaust it's got a lovely v8 note that is quiet when driven mildly, but barks when given a boot full, but it will cruise at less than 10ltrs/100km and not drink fuel like my near 400Hp ford xr8 sedan I also have. It's a car that's old enough you can DIY everything on it if you have a little confidence, and parts to keep it in top shape are not too expensive. It's a testament to the engineering of the e39, that after 20 years there are still so many good examples around the world. For a DIY sort of person, they are a very affordable, easy to work on luxury car.

Since you seem very resourceful, do you have plans on doing videos/tutorials like how to change trans from auto to manual? I’ve got a 540 and would love to swap it to the 6 speeder. Finding non-abused 540is with the correct specs (non-vanos and M package) with the six speeder is extremely difficult, at least here in Sweden =(
J Gripen sorry gripen i will not be venturing so deep into the tech side on our show but I'm glad you enjoyed the video. All the best on that swap. The 540i is a beast
Prefer the early E34s and 80s cars for both looks, feel and them being easier to work on, so I see E39s as a little more complex, especially as I am not a electrician, but yeah, compared to newer cars it is a dream to have E39, and in my opinion its the last good looking BMW, until some of the new ones now
I like your headlight cover its look like from x5 / e46 . Can you please explain me how you fit this cover or where i can buy that ? I really like how it looks
That 525 definitely didn’t come with the M sport seats or wheel as you said. The only m packages were offered on the 540i and they were ether 5speed auto or 6 speed manual.

been thinking of buying one of these, And a six cylinder is fine to save gas over the v8. Not sure about a manual but it sure sounds fun. I sound a black on black one in so cal that i am considering and it's a 530 with a manual. so tempting and better priced than a brand new one with too much tech.

I've had 2 E39 528's. What impressed me the most is there fuel efficiency. A 70 L tank with highway driving got me 850 km . Extremely easy to work on as I said in the video. Get the manual better drive for sure. Hope this helps
Great video. I had three of them. I sold them all one at a time. Miss driving the car, but sure don’t miss working on it. After 100k miles, they do end up being money pits like many other bmws. I don’t really care for the many plastic crap bmw puts in their engine and also those crappy weak cup holders. They are really easy to work on. They are great cars to work on if you love to wrench all the time. Bought my myself a Lexus sc300 and never looked back. I do love the style a e39 though.
Ooh ok ok 😁😁. I loved working on them so it didn't bother me much but that doesn't mean I had many issues though. I had 2 of them and the experience was good Thanks for sharing Christopher 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💪🏽💪🏽. Appreciate that alot. 😉😉
It's 2019 and I'm thinking on buying an 02 or 03 one but not even a few with decent mileage. This car especially with the M sport steering wheel is something I need to have.
The E39 is a much loved 5 series but you'll need to do some ground work to find a good one. But when you do hmmmm. I can tell you now. You'll love it to bits. 😀😀😀😀 good luck on your hunt Ness.
Oooh yes J. I used to get 7.5L per 100/k . I drove from Toronto all the way to Brooklyn New on 1 tank of gas carrying 2 adults also . They are freaking g amazing on fuel
You nailed it in every way there paul. This was why i had to feature this car. Clasic piece of engineering. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience Paul👏👏👏👍👍👍
Solid car, easy to work on, and aftermarket parts from China are cheap and as well or better made than OEM. They are great cars, the only downside is the cooling system is a liability with so many plastic parts that become brittle and break over time. If you buy one with original cooling system parts, replace them all with Chinese aftermarket and get as many metal parts as you can.
Thank you for this wonderful review. You have awakened my interest in e39. I have been using 1995 e34 and this car made me fall in love with BMW. I will be glad to get 2002/2003 528i manual. Please let me know if this is possible.
The name has been changed the a 530 instead of a 528i. The power has increased but the car remains the same . It's awesome. Like you I also started at the E34 535i . I was hooked ever since. You'll love the 530i too.😁😁😁😊😊😊👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
@@letsrollout7307 Thank you for the enlightenment. The challenge is that it's not easy to get the manual transmission. Even if it is 525i, I am fine with it.
@@lawrencennadi5315 yes that is an issue. But be patient it will come up. Keep your eyes open and be ready to jump as soon as it shows it head 🤣🤣🤣. My 550i is a manual and I waited for that baby but now i will never let it go. Take a look at the channel you'll see it.
I have a friend selling a 2002 525i with 57,000 original miles. it was purchased new by an old couple and the wife drove it to the store sometimes until the husband died and she quit driving it in 2015. It has the typical pixel issue on the radio and the drivers seat is twisted a little. Really thinking about getting it
@@82lowe36id The front and rear bumpers are different from the regular car. The steering will look like the one in the video you may have 18inch wheels instead of 17. Do a search on Google E39 Msport pictures. Vs E39 base. That will help you for sure
@@letsrollout7307 I will have to check it out for sure. They gave me a list of things they replaced. Not sure why on some of them. I think since it has been sitting since 2015 it caused some stuff to go bad. Kingsley Bob. While i would love to tell you that a 5 series will work for you. I can't. At 6.7 u will have some space issues. If there's no one sitting behind you , then it may work but if carrying 4 is something that have to do then. You may have to look at a 7 series. MAGNUM. Hey MagNum. Its been a long time. Hope all is well and you've been enjoying the channel. Have we lived up to your expectations???
late 90s-early 2000s were the golden era for cars if you ask me.
Johan Van Der Heide. Those were the great years. Loved it. Good to see u loved the video. Thanks also for taking the time to share your thoughts.
Yeah I don't like the fat arses of the newer ones. Lol
Brat Pack. Aaahh ok cool. Thanks brat👍
I have to agree specially concerning design! All cars that had earlier generations in that time were much better looking and designed, Opel vectra, Honda Civic, Mitsubishi Galant Lanancer...

1999 5.20i 310.000 km very solid and reliable so far using daily
The engine has loads of power even on really low revs, which means you can cruise past 99% of other cars without even revving the engine.
i second that fully Sami. trhere's nothing else that i can add to that to make what you said any better. sorry for the late reply. i do try to reply to each one. hope all is well with you during this time.

lol, I've never seen an e39 with manual air-conditioning. :D
Me neither. Both mine had/have the rather fiddly up/down controls for digital temp, which means taking your eyes off the road for too long.
My E60 has 3 dials, however, they're not clearly labelled, so again, you have to take your eyes off the road for too long (e.g. the temp dial doesn't have a blue - red band running outside the dial, like most cars have)
Me neither..

I've driven many times from here in toronto to newyork with only 1 tank of gas.

fanglethorpe Evans offers a 0 gauge cooling option for the E39, too to reduce stress on the system.

The thing with the M5, it's not _really_ an everyday car because it uses so much fuel, regardless of how much money you have to spend on it and you don't want to stick too many miles on it. Mine's on 88k miles and is a '99 year car in Moonstone (?) blue.

Wow less than a grand that's cool cool 😄😄👌🏾👌🏾 they're nice cars . Is this your first BMW????
