"I'm not gonna bury the lead, ladies and gentlemen, this is a fuckin shit comic" lol that really got me especially with the hard transition into the promotions
I literally tried to lick my finger to turn the page while watching your video on my phone. I’m new to this channel but collected comics heavily in the 90’s. Looks like you’re doing something right! Cheers,
I kinda dug those big weird exhaust pipes on Iron Man's armor. Portacio's art got me super intrigued at that time and I liked the vibe, but it was tough to care about much of what was going on. Cap and Avengers had the better first issues, but FF was the one I stuck with for the whole ride. First issue didn't have the action & colour of the other two, but it felt like a more stable, blockbuster take on things. A coat of gloss on an old favourite that gets better as the issues go on.
Man, this was a goofy time. IIRC, Marvel wanted to pull Hulk fully over to the Heroes Reborn stories, but Peter David was still running his series. The compromise ended up being Banner split from Hulk and going away while Peter David's Hulk kept going.
I think David got the better end of the deal there. Savage Hulk may have been limited in some regard, but he wasn't Stoner Hulk who was haphazardly placed into being Iron Man's main nemesis.
There's something so bizarre about these old liefeld covers. I wasn't even around when these books were released, but call it nostalgia - I think there's something romantic and beautiful about them. The posing / physiques are so stretched and absurd, they almost read as a send up or a pastiche of the superhero genre. But at the same time they're so sincere so it almost seems like a reaffirmation of the tropes of the superhero genre, could there be anything that is *more* superhero than what was distilled here in the late 80's and early 90's? At my local comic shop you often used to find back issues like these stuck in the 99c bin ( or even going for 10c sometimes during sales!) and I used to buy all that I could and I'd just go home and flip thru looking at the art. I don't think I've ever read one or grasped a plot but looking through the visuals there's a kind of magic to it!
I really enjoyed this episode! Great points with the added humor was a bonus. Because I’m a FF and Jim Lee fan, I only picked up that FF back in the day. I do remember that I didn’t stick with it after issue #2. Looking back at these comics, What a cash grab!
I don't think it's the worst Iron Man comic of all time (blue Iron Man takes that), but this is close. The negative space really comes off as saving time on the art that was attempted to be stylized. The design of the suit is new and interesting but you get maybe two looks at it which is a waste. Plus, I think Naked Hulk is a bad choice due to 1) his head being tiny and 2) the innate flaw of having to censor him which limits what you can do with him.
Please do a video about Bacchus, by Eddie Campbell. I found the writing to be particularly great, and the art is rough shot and fun, with cool lines and some minimalist maximalist shenanigans. Bacchus!
Hi. My first comment! :D I have 3 manga recommendations that i think you will find interesting. 1. Kizu Darake no Jinsei 2. Space Family Carlvinson 3. Sekiganjuu Mitsuyoshi
This was such a hard era for me as a comic book fan. Every single book either went down the toilet writing-wise or art-wise. All of them looked HORRIBLE. I still find them awful. The artistic shift as digital came to the fore was just brutal. Every book looked and still looks gross. That frame right at the front with Captain America, Iron Man, Avengers, and Fantastic Four books; it gives me post-traumatic stress almost. It’s just so disappointing in comparison to what was coming out even 1-2 years prior. I didn’t recover from this until the 2010’s. It can still be tough finding good books now but at least there are some every once in a while.
First time I was out of art school and shopping my portfolio around, this nonsense was happening. Which made it frustrating when portfolio reviews would nitpick over the same shit they were actually publishing: bad anatomy, bad or nonexistent backgrounds, shit storytelling. Couldn’t crack the code so I went the indie route. I never bought any of these. I do remember tearing them apart with a couple of comic shop guys who also went to art school.
I remember feeling disappointed after checking out this issue. I was so looking forward to seeing Whilce's artwork since he left Wetworks. His women in this issue looked like men in drag and his men looked like they all went 12 rounds with Rocky Balboa. And it has been like that ever since. I dont know, it's like he lost it and never got it back. His X-Factor and Uncanny X-Men work was so amazing. His women looked cute and guys looked like fashion models.
Fantastic Four, Captain America, Avengers, Iron Man, but they were all garbagio. I started my career as a comics retailer around this time. Talk about trial by fire. It's all deep end.
LOL. Man the 90's were wild! I LOVE Heroes Reborn. Especially that Iron Man suit. If not for this event, I would have probably never read any of these titles. Avengers I might have finally read when I picked it up again-The Ultimates and New Avengers. Same for FF. But I would never have read any Iron Man or Captain America as I didn't before and haven't since. Iron Man. FF, Avengers, Captain America for me.
All of those Heroes Reborn books are dog-awful but if I had to rank - I'd say FF is #1 for actually having solid visual storytelling, Cap is #2 because it's so awful it becomes good again, then Avengers, then Whilce and Scott's steaming pile
As much as I love Whilce Portacio back in the day, his work on Iron Man was sluggish and slow. I wish there were more action and Iron Man in that but I guess it's more on the writers on this book I guess but I really didn't like his take on Bruce Banner and Hulk. That 90's hair style really didn't age well. There's also that how Whilce would cheat but adding a lot shadows but it's his style so it's all good. Fanyastic Four and Iron Man may look good but they really had much action while Rob Liefield's - love him or hate him he at least had some crazy action in his books.
It's a visually striking book. Portacio had a Jim Lee/Silvestri style that worked. The story was some weak ass shit but by today's standards would be very good.
By good fortune, I came in late at issue #2 as my first exposure... and quit at issue #3. Some of the most butt-ugly faces ever seen in comics: hollowed-out cheeks on zombie nutcracker dolls with bloated necks; ubiquitous micro-pinprick eyes catatonically rolling up into darkened, ventriloquist dummy eye sockets... Was Whilce using corpses as reference? 'Be sure to always leave yards of excess white space beneath the iris' 🙄 -- I must have missed that chapter of "How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way."
Totally disagree with this. The issue was great for setting up the new status quo of that universe. Overall Iron Man was the best written of the 4 out of the gate this was much better than the entire previous year's worth of issues from the series. I think that the video is way off base on all counts.
So much terrible art in this era: tiny heads, big thighs, useless detailing, scribbly lines everywhere adding up to nothing. There's been bad comics art in all generations but the '90s were really smashed with an ugly stick.
the shade being thrown with the "JOBdell" lol
"I'm not gonna bury the lead, ladies and gentlemen, this is a fuckin shit comic" lol that really got me especially with the hard transition into the promotions
Definitely a quote worth putting on a shirt😂😂
Love how Jim was impressed with the negative space on page two. Lol. I hope he’s kidding.
Best part of the comic is the Soundgarden ad

nice to see the Love And Rockets first 50 books behind you guys on the shelf, I got that myself recently. Los Bros Hernandez rocks!
They've done a video just on Love and Rockets covers, you should check it out.

Literally the worst head/neck relationships I have ever seen in a mainstream comic

It'd be super funny if this issue got the Kayfabe effect. Heck I'm tempted to buy a copy myself based on the absurdity alone 😄
I really enjoyed this episode! Great points with the added humor was a bonus.
Because I’m a FF and Jim Lee fan, I only picked up that FF back in the day. I do remember that I didn’t stick with it after issue #2. Looking back at these comics, What a cash grab!
Please review some Kevin O’neill art!
They've done the Extraordinary Gentlemen artist edition.
Man I hope there weren’t any Kayfabers clamoring for you to cover this one.
Love your channel . thank you!

I never picked up Avengers. Grabbed the first issue of the others and made it 3 issues into FF before moving on.
I'm not used to seeing so much negative space on Whilce pages. It' looks naked.

Is this the first long haired hulk ?
I think he had long hair around the Steranko period

I actually really liked issue 1 of Heroes Reborn Iron Man, best issue of the whole series probably as it quickly falls apart for multiple reasons.
Those shoulder pylon things on Iron Man's armor are just taken from Evangelion. It might not be exact but it's definitely what they were going for.
Hard to believe this was BEFORE talking head comics became a thing.
Terrible comic, but I remember being so jazzed about how Whilce drew the Hulk. All those shadows!
I remember feeling disappointed after checking out this issue. I was so looking forward to seeing Whilce's artwork since he left Wetworks. I bought this when it came out and the only thing I remember is Banner's haircut (inverse bob butt cut?)
This is the era in comics that has me thinking..Who the hell would have been following these weekly titles 😄
Heroes Reborn was preceded by The Crossing, which was possibly even worse. Very rushed, shoddy and not thought out.
Good point.
Agree with this statement 100%
I always love that design of iron Man. It was badass
All the squinity eyes! It's like everyone is always staring into the sun. Also Banner's hair is a mood.
Damn straight the best part is in Buffalo!
Fantastic Four, Captain America, Avengers, Iron Man, but they were all garbagio. I started my career as a comics retailer around this time. Talk about trial by fire. It's all deep end.
I’m my opinion Thai may be the best looking comic of all time
It looks amazing. Portacio was top 5 GOATs.
LOL. Man the 90's were wild! I LOVE Heroes Reborn. Especially that Iron Man suit. If not for this event, I would have probably never read any of these titles. Iron Man. FF, Avengers, Captain America for me.
The young Iron Man that came after Heroes Reborn Iron Man was a million times worse
🔥🔥🔥
This is Whilce using a light table too much to crank out face panels. Not too much more in general.
All of those Heroes Reborn books are dog-awful but if I had to rank - I'd say FF is #1 for actually having solid visual storytelling, Cap is #2 because it's so awful it becomes good again, then Avengers, then Whilce and Scott's steaming pile

I gotta go: Avengers / FF / Captain America /Ironman ^^
I liked it! 🤷

Not to mention yards of excess white space on the entire page 🥴
Totally disagree with this. The issue was great for setting up the new status quo of that universe. This is not close to the crappiest Iron Man comic Marvel has published. Marvel has published comics with a teenage girl as Iron Man.
That’s so bad that it doesn’t even count as a comic. It’s just kindling material.
Teen Ironman (during The Crossing Era) is just as bad.
@thomasgreissfan17 you sure? The character the story the suit the name all somehow terrible
I was gonna say your answer as well @@phillipwattsjr.4714
Why choose? They're ALL awful ;)
All of these Reborn titles were weak. The Hulk element was shoved in for the 1st issue. Also not Whilce's best art.
Also Soundgarden down on the upside... dude. Not the best lp
So much terrible art in this era: tiny heads, big thighs, useless detailing, scribbly lines everywhere adding up to nothing. There's been bad comics art in all generations but the '90s were really smashed with an ugly stick.
