Android and cell saga hands down the best sagas of dbz IMO. Story, theme (dark), drama, action, the enemies, all the z fighters was involved, etc. It had it all just about.
The series should have ended after the cell saga imo. Everything after was garbage. The only other notable fight was goku vs majin vegeta. But that still lacked heavily.

This is hands down the scariest and most intimidating villain introduction in all of Dragon Ball.

@@bt4318No. Android 20 literally strangled a guy's neck until it was a shriveled noodle (one of the most violent kills I can remember in this series), and stabbed a hole through Yamcha while draining the life out of him. These guys were a freaking MENACE.

It's nice just seeing Goku, Piccolo and Tien as a team. Those 3 have some history together, and the latter two both served as main antagonists in the past, yet it's a rare trio.

Tien trained with King Kai and spent the last three training for the Androids, I hate how the show acts like he couldn't have made a drastic leap in power in that time.

@@RadioactiveSince1990x Tien is by far the strongest pure human in the entire canon. Dude literally held semiperfect Cell down with TriBeams, giving 18 time to escape being absorbed. I bet in the Android Saga that Tien could've forced Frieza into using his final form.
@@jmcsquared18 Absolutely, and he should have been using Kaioken as well, he spent more time training with Kai than even Goku did. Tien is selfless and willing to use his own life force to face stronger enemies. Imagine how badass Tien using Kaioken would look.
Tien was bodying 2nd form Cell for like a hour until he ran out of energy. Unfortunately being a human has it's limits but he pretty much reached a level of probably Namek Goku he could likely solo the entire Ginyu Force at this point at the same time.
This shyt was so deep. You can hear the pain in Goku voice when he yells "Nooooooooooooo"

You can already see the heart virus beginning to affect Goku. Very subtle touches in the animation. Faint sweat droplets, the quick head turn, the gutteral edge to his voice, his punch doing little more than knocking Gero’s hat off. You can tell even here that something’s not right.
Tadayoshi Yamamuro was the MAN back in the day. Now he sucks because his style never evolved.
0:42 THIS MOMENT....RIGHT HERE one of the MANY things that separates Z from Super....how epic is it.... all 3 of them getting into fighting stance at the same time ready to throw down like true Z fighter style, the music, tone, facial expressions, animation, are spectacular. The way the camera pans to all three of them... yhere is a sense of urgency, drama and WEIGHT to this. Then the punch from Goku....You can like it super....absolutely fine but I don't want to hear ANYONE try and say super compares to Z ever. It doesn't. This is but a small piece of evidence as to why

Android 19 says this, however it really is not stated in the Japanese dub. But there is too much damage. So there has to be a lot of dead folks. ;(

Funny thing is I was born when it first ended as to be my Birthdate back on January 31st, 1996 from Japan🇯🇵 then it first released in the United States🇺🇸 back on September 13, 1996 & then ended on April 7, 2003. It truly makes me a Real Legend when Dragon Ball Z became the Best Anime in History which I should be blessed & proud of when everything changed back in 1996 to what God bring us in the United States🇺🇸 from Japan🇯🇵 we all wouldn’t have been Anime Fans if Dragon Ball Z never even existed if it wasn’t for Japan🇯🇵😊🙂🙃😀😃😄😁😆🤣😂🥺😭😩📺. 0:48-0:55 always looked so badass. Tien, knowing he’s probably not strong enough but still brave to stand up. Piccolo, could take out both but is still unsure of what will come. Goku, angry, confident, intense, and ready to fight.

valleyking15 yeah, the original timeline fight would potentially been very different. As much as the Z fighters had Goku who was always striving to be stronger and Vegeta chasing Goku’s power it’s doubtful that any of them would have been as strong without Trunks warning them. The combined motivation of the Androids arrival and in Vegeta’s case yet another unknown (at that point) super saiyan level fighter for him to chase would have made a significant difference

The beginning of this saga was all too real considering that an unseen enemy of the past came back to haunt Goku some 20 years later. Very dramatic. And then it had gotten "unreal" when 17 and 18 surfaced. Then the nightmare Cell emerged and achieved his perfection. The Android saga was the pinnacle of the DBZ franchise and has the best story line out of any anime out there.
The Android saga is the only really good part of the entire Artificial Human arc.
Everything involving Cell is an utter mess, badly written and one giant gapping plothole. Cell's entire backstory for example, makes no sense!
@@LordMalice6d9In a way, you are right, but it was actually the best, but keep in mind, the story had inconsistencies because of heavy US editing. Cell's back story was edited as well. A lot of anime stories are ruined for the better or the worse like Sailor Moon, the beginning. The US version was a s%%t show if you run it side by side with the JP version. There were a lot of things that did not make any sense until you watch the JP version. It would had actually upset a lot of parents if they didn't do any editing... There were a lot of same sex relationships around every corner, yet they allowed the fantasies to ship through like a 14 year old girl in love with a 27 year old man.
There are no people left to leave out...... Jesus tapdancing mother of Christ, that is a scary line of dialog.

The creator never liked this goku he said he didn’t like how they painted him a hero instead of a martial artist who likes to fight. Super is what the series was originally supposed to go but seeing how it was popular overseas he had to appeal to everybody. Super is really for the Japanese fans not the overseas fans and that’s okay but I wish he would appeal to us overseas fans like he did with Z and the Z movies

A lack of creative effort and an abundance of greed is what happened here.
I'll summarize:
Akira Toriyama sold-out to Toei Animation in order to make another Dragon Ball series (Dragon Ball Super) and thus regressed Goku's intellectual character-development back to the beginning of DBZ to make Goku's character easy to script-write for; this is why DBS Goku acts so idiotic most of the time.
Akira only cares about making $$$ now, and thus he made his characters as simplistic as possible, which requires the smallest amount of effort on his and his staff's part to make DBS's production possible.
THAT is why Goku and his peers will never again be as well-developed in DBS as they were in DBZ~
This is one of those rare cases when the Americanization makes it better

Gero’s hatred of Goku is the stuff of legends. He takes a punch to the face from his nemesis and doesn’t even react or show emotion, he just stares coldly.
Piccolo has the best voice.

This is so hilarious to watch now because at this point it's abundantly clear that Android 20 is Dr Gero and you can _see_ that he doesn't have an artificial brain, so instead of before when I was like "he's a glitchy robot with not enough understanding of how reality works" as a less-comprehensive kid, I see Android 20 blow up the city and realize he's not doing it because he's an inferior AI, he's doing it because he's a huge dickhead.
If Goku wasn’t sick him and Piccolo would have destroyed Gero and 19 Goku was crushing 19 until the heart virus kicked in and Piccolo was throwing Gero around like a rag doll and that was after having energy taken from him
Agreed android 19 and 20 were truly the weak ones in comparison to 16, 17, 18, and cell if it wasn't for that virus gero never would've those androids and cell might never have absorbed them

I use to think gero was like dr willy or dr robotnik of dbz. As the main villain but i started watching it in the middle. Hell i didnt know who goku was at the start. I was flipping through the channels and noticed the show myself when i was in highschool in 2000. 😂

1:47 Can we take a moment to appreciate that, for all that Gero was the driving force behind this entire arc (even posthumously), and for how he himself was driven solely by Goku, this single punch is the one & only time these two actually came to blows?
This was the type of stuff Super was missing. The first two arcs were retreads. The U6 tournament was just that. No stakes, even if they tried to make it seem like there were. The future Saga's destruxtiob had already happened off screen. We got Zamasu flattening the planet which was cool, but only lasted a few seconds before we got the Zeno nonsense. The ToP had the same issues. A lot of fun but no stakes. We all knew all the universes woukd get revived in the end.

Man, the worst thing to happen in DBZ was dr gero if you think about it. Gero only observed gokus fights with vegeta and nappa, and somehow had the data to replicate there techniques and ki manipulation organically. If he never had access to a saiyan like goku, androids would have never been this powerful. Gero stumbled on a gold mine of information, but man, it ended up creating the worst androids ever and even his super computer ended up creating cell with the information on namek. Weird how humans were the biggest threat to earth in a way.

Toriyama built up these androids and meant for 19 and 20 to be the villains, then the studio looked at them and thought they were far too silly looking to be the villains, so then Toriyama came up with 17 and 18, but then came up with 16 as well, these too were looked down by the studio so then he came with up Cell as the true villain of the android saga. There was alot of interference in the production and that's why it feels messy compared to the saiyan and Namek sagas.
The build up and introduction were great, but I have to agree that 19 and 20 were just too silly looking. The other androids were fine as far as I'm concerned but I'm glad we got Cell as the final villain, he is definitely the scariest and best villain of the lot of them.
It's not the studio that complained, but Kazuhiko Torishima, Toriyama's ex-editor.
He was no longer supposed to have a say, but he still called Toriyama to tell him: "so, that's the greatest threat the Earth has ever faced? A fatso and an old geezer? Surely, you can do better!". That's why Toriyama created 16, 17, and 18. But Torishima was still not satisfied, and he called back Toriyama: "great, now it's a bunch of emo kids! Find something else!". And that's how Toriyama came up with Cell. Because he listened to the negative feedback from his former editor. But then, it was his new editor, Yū Kondō, who was not satisfied with Cell's design, and that's how we ended up with Perfect Cell.

One can say Dr. Gero the one Earthling whose heart was truly evil akin to the likes of Frieza, Cell, Kid Buu. He has no problem destroying innocents to get what he wants and spent decades creating killing machines that ultimately killed him in the end.
this scene exudes "first series" from every pore. we have Goku (protagonist) together with those who were a ferocious and ruthless rival (Tien) and a deadly archenemy (Piccolo) who are about to face two andorids of the Red Ribbon. practically, we have all brought together the key points of the first DB series

The android saga is perfection in my opinion. And Bruce's score is flawlessly dark and brooding as always. The other versions without his score really lack the intensity the scenes required.
I've seen snippets of the more recent dragon ball series, super, gt, etc and I got to say they really are missing the magic, finesse and drama that the older series captured so well.
Everyone tells me I got to watch Super fully and give it a chance but, much of what I have seen already seems cliche and repetitive and makes me think it will be an exhausting experience.The older series really had some diverse, interesting, unique moments, themes and messages. And it's that originality that I often miss with more modern television shows.
I love the Androids so much I wish you could pick them as a subclass of humans in the Xenoverse games.
And to think Dr.Gero had a hand in every event after The Cell Saga regardless of people knew it or not! The world didn’t come to an end and life began to thrive all the way to The Buu Saga, he created a new 17 with Myu in GT, Goku Black learning of the events Trunks did with Time Travel in Super, and his creation in 17 won The Tournament Of Power….the man’s legacy lived on waaaaay after his death
If I’m not mistaking, I believe that this should have been Android 17 and 18 that showed up to the city to wreak havoc but ever since trunks showed up this timeline took a hard right and went down a different path where Gero didn’t activate the androids yet.
Remember Trunks wasn't there for this event he only has accounts from history and from his mom, who most likely didn't meet Android 19 and 20 when they first arrived.

There is no reason to believe 19 and 20 didn't show up in Trunks' timeline, and probably did in fact kill one or two of the Z fighters before being stopped by Vegeta, leading Gero to escape and activate 17 and 18, thus killing the remaining. Everyone wants to attribute the lack of Trunks being aware of 19 and 20 to some butterfly effect, when in actuality, the more reasonable explanation is that Trunk's was a baby, Bulma never actually saw the battle(in the Trunks timeline at least), and Gohan didn't find it notable enough to mention, or wasn't aware himself, or wasn't involved in the initial battle until 17 and 18 were already active.
@@PPKNexus If I'm not mistaken in the manga, when Trunks tells Goku what will happen in three years, he actually refers to the androids that attack as 19 and 20.
@@thedude9941 That is correct, he does. However, he then goes on to contradict himself a few chapters and say 17 & 18 were the ones he was talking about all along. This was due to Toriyama intending for the only villains to be 19 & 20 originally. The manga goes on to pretend he said 17 & 18 all along and gaslights the readers. It was a mistake and should be disregarded when forming both head canon and hypothesis' in general.

Given how tight Goku is I'm surprised he didn't just go Super Saiyan right there and destroy Gero with one punch. If Gero was weak enough to have his arms ripped off by Piccolo, then he's quite weak. I miss the original dub for this though when it aired on CN in 2000, Android 19 had a more robotic filter going on

@@RigbyIsTheMan Still, it doesn't really make sense that he didn't power up after seeing what he did to Yamcha let alone the entire city. That alone should've enraged him greatly. This is slightly before Goku started feeling effects of the virus, so while he still would've got sick, at least the doctor would be down and they'd never be able to find the lab as a result.
If Piccolo was more than capable of killing Gero, which he would've if not for Trunks suddenly coming back and taking his surprise thus giving Gero time to get into the lab. It's an interesting idea, the boy from the future comes back to see how things are and ends up making things even worse, although in the manga Vegeta said he'd kill anyone who got in the way of activating the androids. No doubt if Vegeta was in base Trunks would immediately power up and kill him just to prevent this.
Even if Vegeta did activate them, they'd be really confused like why are we being activated by someone who isn't the doctor, and there are still the shutdown buttons, Trunks could snag them without anyone noticing possibly. A lot of what ifs in this arc.
Trunks could've done this and just shut them down and destroyed them in the original future. But more likely everything played out mostly the same except Trunks went back in time to the original timeline with the blueprints for Bulma to make self-destruct buttons since Cell wasn't in that timeline except for the egg which I'm sure they blew up. Krillin probably also was not given the switch but someone else as a result of circumstances changing, or just blew up only 17 lol. Either way there's no way Trunks beat them alone.
That straight up punch from Goku was ruthless. He was pissed that those innocent people were just taken out.

I always loved Bruce falconer music from dragon ball z it’s really awesome and as a person who grew up with this dub it’s pretty cool to hear this again.

Piccolo couldn't kill Android 19 nor 20 at full charged power. Dr. Gero wasn't at full strength when he fought Piccolo, thats why he went out absorbing energy.

People who didnt grow up with the Bruce Faulconer composed DBZ like to use Dr. Gero’s theme and “circus” sounding part in particular as the reason why this version sucks compared to the original. I say, it enhanced the HELL out of this scene. Was chaotic as all hell when I first seen this 😅

These were originally supposed to be the ones who took over trunk's future but they changed it late in development wonder what would've happened if they kept this idea years before goku black and God's of destruction and all that still fun in their own way 😊😊
It sucks that these two showed up all intimidatingly and ended up having pretty pathetic deaths. I kinda wish Toriyama didn't reject the idea of making these two the main antagonists in this saga.
He didn't. His editors rejected them as the villains. They thought Gero and Android 19 weren't intimidating enough cause they were just "an old geezer and a fat clown". So that's when Android's 17 and 18 were created but this time Toriyama's editors rejected them as being "a couple of punk teen brats". As a result we got Cell.

@@coryames1170 That's true and then the editor's rejected cell's first form, which led to the sub plot of him having to absorb 17 and 18 to transform. It really shows what a mess this arc was due to too much editorial medaling, I often wonder what this arc might have been like had Toriyama been allowed to stick with his original plan, he even said himself he thought 19 and 20 were fine and would have kept them as the main villains if it was up to him.
