excited for the shed build! i've been kicking around the idea of building myself one for a shop (around 12'x16') since i don't have room in my new house. i've been without a shop for the last year and i'm itching to get back to it! keep up the great work! cheers!
I signed up for the course and found it really useful and enjoyable. There is a good deal of information but not so much that it is intimidating. The Discord server will be a real source of feedback and collaborative help. Thank you Keith.
You could also try the Vic Firth Bluetooth Isolation Headphones. I've got them for drumming ear protection. I'm quite happy with the sound quality, but I got no idea how they compare to any of your shown products or what protection is needed in regard of working noise.
I just use my normal earbuds under a standard (i.e.: non-Bluetooth) ear defender. The earbuds play the content while the ear defender saves my hearing from the noise. Works great and the sound quality is probably the best this way. With my small sized earbuds, it's also not uncomfortable at all.
Great update Keith, well done on the course I'm sure it'll be a great help to others and you are always practical, open and honest in your content which is always welcome - 9 years eh, where did that go ! Sounds like some great content coming up, who doesn't love a shed build, I personally would have happily watched you toiling in the front drive digging more drainage but understand why you didn't ! Thank you very much for making and creating !
I had to disassemble those 3M headphones and replace all the wiring with thicker wire, after the original thin stuff shorted out due to metal fatigue where it had to flex all the time. Not an uncommon failure for headphones, but irritating how quickly it happened. The rewiring was a fiddly micro-surgical soldering job but it worked. Regardless I would say you are right to reject them. I have moved on to ear buds under large ear defenders for the moment. Works ok but not great either. 9 years! I remember all the way back to the beginning! Keep up the great work. Greetings from Seattle.
I no longer recall, but it was flimsy, thin, wispy stuff that was very annoying to strip and solder. Every corner was cut in the manufacturing process I suppose.... @@whirled_peas
Shed build 😊😊 can only go from my experience with my shed/workshop build. What i found was that because i was building it for myself, and it was my dream workshop. I spent more mkney on it than i should have. Because i wanted it right. Regrets yes. Should have laid a course of blocks around the edge of the concrete slab to stop the base timbers sitting on water when it rains. Should have used treated timber. I have more, but these are the ones i regret the most.
Great video - as a father of 5 boys, the fence by the wall is a great idea. The best thing I did was to stop access to the drive with a gate each side of the house and put a child proof gate and lock across the drive entrance to stop them getting near the road. In my experience boys will explore, so I decided the best thing was to encourage them to explore safely to the rear of the home 😂😂
Just catching up Keith. Would you believe I've been to a place with no internet connection AT ALL! (Surprisingly brilliant for two weeks!). Very excited for all the upcoming projects, but sorry you're not filming the new soak away. I can't get enough of those videos and hoped you might have a novel solution, as you often do 😉
For the 3M, if you go that route, IMO go the little extra and get the ones that have the radio built in, then you get volume controls as well as a radio. The only porblem I had with them is that I had BT linked to one device, and it auto connected when turned on, and when already connected, it on't let you pair to a new device. I had to go around the home and figure out which devide it did pair with....
I have the Stihl headphone, they are bloody brilliant I love them. Listen to them for hours a day, sound quality is pretty good, the noise exclusion is fantastic, I've done loads of dirty dusty work and they are still perfect. In 2 years of frequent use I've charged them less than 10 times the battery life is incredible. Not often you buy electronic products that impress you nowadays. Thanks for the suggestion years ago keith. The 3m ones, no volume buttons?? What were they thinking
I've been really looking forward to the public launch of your course. Having completed the course while it was still in 'preview' it is something I would strongly recommend to anyone thinking of starting a RUclips channel or wanting inspiration to keep going with the one they have already. There's plenty of actionable information in the course and, importantly in my opinion, Keith does a really good job of explaining how he has shaped his channel with content he's enjoyed making. Worth every penny in my view and well done Keith! As for ear defenders: I've the 3M ear defenders and you're right they're a bit middle of the road, but I really didn't like the Isotunes ones at all. I am super fussy when it comes to headphones etc. following years working in Radio. These days I mostly use Bose quiet comfort earbuds with standard 3M ear defenders over the top. Lovely!
Love a good shed build. Unfortunately I've no room left in the garden to build my own and her indoors won't let me put one in the back bedroom. Unreasonable woman.
I have the work tunes and find them much more comfortable than the Stihl which I struggle to wear all day from a comfort point of view. 100% agree re volume button I get around this via smart watch. I thought the sound from 3M work tunes slightly better than Stihl. Looking forward to the table build
I have the isotunes as well and I must admit that you are right, Keith. They are a bit cheap looking... Can't help but wonder if wearing my sony noise cancelling headset wouldn't work just as good as far as hearing protection goes... Any thoughts on that?
I don't think noise cancellation is quite so safe as ear defenders and also the sound can distort when running loud machines on the few occasions I've used my Sony ones in the workshop 👍
@@RagnBoneBrown guess I'll only wear my Sony inside the house, where they perform perfectly! In the workshop I tend to grab my 3m ones the most often. only if I know I have to make a large number of cuts on the table saw I get my isotunes and throw some music on.
I bought a pair of ISOTunes headphones (not the model you had) and have given up on them. I can't even hear a podcast once I turn any piece of machinery on. They don't auto-switch off when they've been disconnected for a while (so when you next come to use them the battery is flat). I would have thought this was a headphones 101 feature. So...... I'll be saving up for some Stihl ones by the look of it. I've gone back to using my cheap non-bluetooth pair from Screwfix. Cost me less than a tenner IIRC and are lighter and more comfortable than the ISOTunes ones.
Interesting-I have used the 3M Worktunes for years and I love them. I think they sound great for music as well as spoken audio, and I’m moderately picky about sound quality.
Top video, looking forward to future content, though I’m a little confused, how can the ear defenders that don’t work (twice?) have the best build quality?
Good question, well I have had them for years, they've fallen from great heights on multiple occasions, been bashed around and taken lots of abuse, and the fault that has occurred doesn't seem to be related to the build quality but more of a software glitch as far as I can tell. I'm just hoping that the new pair doesn't do the same
I bought the 3m worktunes first after trying isotunes in ear headphones which I needed to clean all the time. I found them really good; sound quality, sealing around the ear, material of the cushion. I bought the isotunes over ear headphones you had and found them painful to wear. The cushion was too stiff and firm and wouldn't seal, therefore not useful as ear defenders. As I can wear my headphones sometimes for all day everyday, I found when I started to sweat it was like having a moist cushion around my ear. Very unpleasant. I was releaved to take them off for lunch break everyday. Sadly my isotunes have been put on the shelf only used when the 3m battery dies or is charging. 3m worktunes bought 2018 (before UK release). Only replaced 1 ear cushion as it ripped, otherwise going strong 👌
Hi Keith. I know this is an older video, hopefully you'll get this. With regards to ear defenders I think I can see another pair hanging up in the background. They look like the green iso tunes. Am I correct and if so why didn't you include them? Are the Stihl ones still your go to?
By this time you should exclude the 'on a tight budget' part. I understand and that's why I follow you. For honest real life content. Exited for the next journey.
Hellberg makes some great ear defenders also, although a bit pricey. I have the Xstream LD, but I never use the active listening, and the regular Xstream is a bit less pricey.
I suggest you try a set of noise cancelling headphones, but don't get the ones made for construction. My wife got some Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones and I think they are just as good for protecting my ears as the 3m you showed here, which I also have. I would try them at least and see what you think....expensive, but the sound is amazing.
I wear my Pixel Buds (with sounds cancellation) then put my 3M Optime I or III depending on the job and it's super comfy, with excellent sound qualtiy and honestly block all sound out. I guess any ear buds would work
Would my airpods still work if covered by my non-Bluetooth ear defenders 😏🧐? I’ll have to try soon. I won’t have volume control but I don’t have to spend extra money either
Kind of a shame the ear defenders don't deliver an acceptable sound quality. I know a decent driver isn't expensive - I swear by Superlux brand semi-open headphones (seriously, look them up), which come in around the 20 quid mark. That said, I'm sure the factory that produces them can exploit all sorts of supply chain advantages. The (honest) content creator course is a great idea - best of luck with it!
I really really liked the 3M worktunes ... for a year (I mostly only listen to podcasts). Then they slowly stopped working and died. Pretty annoying that work headphones that should be somewhat rugged break so often. I was always careful with my 3M, definitely never abused them. But they only lasted about a year and a half :/ I've been using the Stihl for a year now and haven't had any issues, I hope it will continue.
Can't you just buy a pair of wireless earbuds that have good sound quality? Wear them and put the ear defenders over them? They are fairly small so I'd think the earbuds would fit inside the ear padding bit of the ear defenders.
Not something, that interests me personally, but I'm sure your new course will be money well spent. Looking forward, to the up and coming projects, especially the shed build.
