Yep the N63 is definitely one of those motors you either have to really keep on top of or avoid altogether. On my Uncle's X6 50i we went ahead with catless downpipes and turbo wraps for the heat soak issue, had a carbon cleaning service performed (manifold taken off), ran a catch can, installed a 90 degree thermostat and change the coolant every 2 years both in the main and auxiliary system. That's what we did so far.... Later on we will be looking out for piping and tubing located in the V of the motor to see if they fail. At this moment the motor runs fantastic and pulls like hell but constant checking is required.
How are things holding up? If I buy an n63 x5, which I just might, catless and wrapped downpipes with turbo blanket and 90 t stat are what I'd do as well. Curious how much it'll actually help the engine long term.

So basically you are telling me that my 2022 M550 has a junk engine and something or another will fail at some point. I thought BMW may have fixes these issues on latest models, but I am glad that I am just leasing it. I was thinking of keeping the M550 because it is an incredible fun car to drive.
Hi just recently brought a bmw 550i f10 and found out the hard way that theses engines have issues I have to fix the valve stem seals , fix all the hoses , injectors water pump and so I should I keep the car now that I've changed basically they whole top end of the motor even had the head machined?
Tell me about it.! I’m stuck paying for a car that cannot drive . Because bmw claimed they did valve seals 2 years ago and now I have oil in my engine, every warranty out of date and bmw want 1800 just to diagnose . Taking about borescope and leak down test. One of the easiest things to do a mechanic said on RUclips
Two points - 1) I have the 750Li 63tu version - its been very reliable, but yes you DO need to regularly check and top up the oil. and 2) I'm English but the presenter is speaking so fast, that even I am having difficulty following what he's saying !
Not only do the valve stem seals cause oil consumption. The oil rings also get stopped up with burnt oil. I replaced the valve stem seals and it didn't fix the oil consumption. So i tore the motor down and found the oil rings stopped up with burnt oil. Good luck
Does anyone think that if you were to make the cooling systems in the n63 super beefy and almost too big and over cool things would help with the valve stem seals and getting hot?
It's not really a bad engine, but it has its flaws. The main one is the turbos are housed right on top of the engine, in the V. There's your problem, HEAT. The turbos get super hot and fry the oil in the tubes for circulating the oil to the turbos. If you drive the car hard and suddenly just turn the engine off, the turbos haven't cooled down effectively and the extreme heat fries the oils in the tubes, which isn't circulating now. Best thing is to drive gently to your destination, the last few miles, so the engine can cool down some, or have the engine idle for a few minutes after driving hard. And change the oil every 5000 miles and make sure oil level is full.
I have a 2011 x5 50i that needs a new engine. i owe too much on it, wondering whether to bite the bullet and replace the engine or just try to pay it off. I had it less than a year before the engine blew from oil consumption
Superb video, Dean. I have looked at Seven Series for years, with this engine, because they are cheap, even for very clean examples.Would love to have one, but not with this litany of problems. Would a nice S Class be a better buy, all things the same, in your opinion?
Yes s class more reliable. 2015 shows much better than average in Consumer Reports rating. Just be careful cause transmission reliability dropped to only average.
I feel sad now. I had my 2013 550i since 20k now at 80k, no issues to speak of just regular maintenance costs. I've put more into keeping the S54 happy and singing owned my 06 Cab since new now 90k on the odo everything from cryo vanos to sub frame reinforcement etc etc but now scared the f10 is going to go.... 😔
I bought a car with N63; very on-purpose with as few miles as possible to get ahead of nightmares caused from lack of maintenance. The engine runs like new and i'd like to keep it that way. You have links to the products to do proactive maintenance but they link to UK amazon; i don't know how to 'send a message' so i'm putting in a comment; you said you can sell the product for the VSS treatment and also i'm interested in the injector cleaner and if applicable, top engine, or turbo oil.
everyone keeps just saying the N63 which is the first gen engine before 2012 or 2013 but they never really mention the years I know a lot of issues were fixed with the other gens, are the N63TU reliable? or the N63TU2?
N63 is now 3rd gen with TU3. Not sure if these later generations of n63 have same issues. As far as I know the first gen of m850i using the TU3 from 2019 hasn’t seen any issues yet
I have a 2011 750li..with 36000 miles on it. Just got my oil changed and a few other service done to it. When i was done the gentlemen at BMW..said there was a lawsuit that would cover a certain percentage of the a new engine. Lower the miles lower the cost out of pocket and what BMW would pay. The question i have is it worth it..or is the newer N63 engine gonna have the same problems? Like to hear your feed back. Thanks
I had an extended warranty Platinum something... on my 2011 550i. I'm on my 3rd engine. Car has 68,000 miles and the engine 24,000 now. Last bill was $21,000 plus (covered by the warranty). The newest version of the engine in 2018 was sent over to NY BMW dealer from Germany and then installed. I had to pay $1,500 for diagnostic. The warranty company was looking for any reason not to cover the engine replacement. Trying to say It was owner fault for not having adequate oil in the engine, but the teardown/diagnostic proved otherwise. All I want to say is thank God for the warranty. The old engine used to burn so much oil and threw two bearings which contaminated the engine with metal pieces and caused it to knock. The current engine burns a quart every 5,000 miles or so (it's still BS). I replaced the coolant lines and 2 ignition coils, due to a misfire under acceleration to 80 mph. BMW was using the old, faulty coils. If you need coils replaced, make sure you get the new version. Other than what I've mentioned, the 550i is good to go. (mine's a 6 speed manual, M-Sport, rear wheel drive, still looks like brand new) Used to have the Dinan stage 2, but haven't had the car reflashed. I'm fine with it as it is. I own other cars if I want to go fast. (I copied and pasted my original comment from above)... There was a class action suit regarding excessive oil consumption. I've received a letter saying that I could trade my 550i in and also get a few thousand dollars off a new Bimmer. Don't remember other details, was probably over 5 years ago.
How do I get the Forte Seal Conditioner? You think it will help my oil consumption? I use a quart every 200 miles. I see heavy oil smoke when I cold start it and when I reev it

Mate there is no preventing it buddy most parts on that engine left the factory failure mate it’s not a case of if on the N63 it’s a case of WHEN as it will all go out regardless of the care mate you find the people that care for these the most is the ones that it ends up affecting when they change everything That’s why bmw was offering extended warranty on this engine for this reason
@@BMWDoctor Wow! i didn't know it was that serious! Do you think that not doing extreme accelerations or waiting 1 or 2 minutes before shutting off the engine would be of any help?
Had to trade in my 550i GT with that variant of the N63. Unfortunately car fax had a lot of info on my car that depreciated the value. On my last visit to the dealership, the warranty covered $12k worth of work. Most of it due to engine work: valve replacement for at least the second time and the rear suspension. Glad I had paid for the extended warranty. If nothing else, the internet is a great source of info for this and a lot of things. Obviously uTube helps too. N63, N63TU, N63TU1, N63TU2, N63TU3 , so which one are talking about ? N63 was buid until 2012, N63TU 450hp is a lot different than N63 407 hp it has new injectors , new chains, new internals etc. and it's pretty reliable for what it is .

BMW mechanic 10 years here, we haven't really had too many problems with the M5 engines or their counterparts at our garage. The injectors were an early issue with carbon building up but we've never changed a chain on one. He's absolutely right about the oil consumption but it's more the constraints manufacturers are under when it comes to efficiency and emissions, the oil we're using is now the same across the board 0w30 which is extremely thin for such a powerful hot running engine and it therefore burns oil like nobody's business, he's incorrect about the oil service intervals as well, it's got nothing to do with them thinking they can get away with longer because it needs topping up more often but how clean it runs, less of the nasty burn off gets deposited into the oil and therefore it doesn't need changing as often, the colour of the engine oil when you do a change in the latest petrols is quite surprising.

So basically you are telling me that my 2022 M550 has a junk engine and something or another will fail at some point. I thought BMW may have fixes these issues on latest models, but I am glad that I am just leasing it. I was thinking of keeping the M550 because it is an incredible fun car to drive.
I have the n63tu,what was changed ?
In a nutshell, stay the hell away? Great video, really enjoyed it. I love them though! grrrrrrr
An #M119: the engine we all really need back in our lives.
Hi just recently brought a bmw 550i f10 and found out the hard way that theses engines have issues I have to fix the valve stem seals , fix all the hoses , injectors water pump and so I should I keep the car now that I've changed basically they whole top end of the motor even had the head machined?
Do you think the 2019 N63 engine is a reliable engine when well maintained? Do you have some suggestions about it
I learned the hard way about the N63 issues on my X5 50i 🤦🏽♂️
Tell me about it.!
I’m stuck paying for a car that cannot drive .
Because bmw claimed they did valve seals 2 years ago and now I have oil in my engine, every warranty out of date and bmw want 1800 just to diagnose .
Taking about borescope and leak down test.

Two points - 1) I have the 750Li 63tu version - its been very reliable, but yes you DO need to regularly check and top up the oil. and 2) I'm English but the presenter is speaking so fast, that even I am having difficulty following what he's saying !

How are the newest engines? Looking at a 2023 m550i or m850i.
2019 750 I N63 having a hard time getting info on the new years are these new models still having a lot big problems
Not only do the valve stem seals cause oil consumption. The oil rings also get stopped up with burnt oil. I replaced the valve stem seals and it didn't fix the oil consumption. So i tore the motor down and found the oil rings stopped up with burnt oil. Good luck
Yaaaassss about time somebody who knows sumn and no wasted time loves it thank u
OK considering a 2020 BMW M550i and it has the third version of the N63. Is that one a bad one??
Does the Bmw S63b44tu motor suffer from the same issue as the N63
I hope not because I wanted an M5
I don't own one, but I used to work on them, don't miss them!!
Is for the 2020 750i models and newer?
Good video bro
thanks mate
I have a 2011 x5 50i that needs a new engine. i owe too much on it, wondering whether to bite the bullet and replace the engine or just try to pay it off. I had it less than a year before the engine blew from oil consumption
Drive that POS off a cliff and tell the insurance company it was stolen and wrecked.
n63tu is the way to go!
What do you think of the bmw x7 5.0i, as was thinking of buying the 2019 bmw x7 5.0i
Good info. I like your stuff dude! (y)
I'm testing the same car in a few days. So the '13 has the S54, not the N63? Should i worry?
How will the new X6 M50i be in cross country drive?
So you gotta have a lot of money or you can’t have one of these engines basically?
I bought a car with N63; very on-purpose with as few miles as possible to get ahead of nightmares caused from lack of maintenance. The engine runs like new and i'd like to keep it that way. You have links to the products to do proactive maintenance but they link to UK amazon; i don't know how to 'send a message' so i'm putting in a comment; you said you can sell the product for the VSS treatment and also i'm interested in the injector cleaner and if applicable, top engine, or turbo oil.
so should i buy a 2012 550i sport twin v8, that just had its engine replaced
I have an E92 335i with only 58K miles. Looking at a 2012 650i (N63) but with only 28K miles. Should I just keep the E92?
Do not get a n63 engine car. DO NOT. Did you not watch this video??
Are your comments focused on the M63 engines under the CCP Program. 2008 - 2013?
everyone keeps just saying the N63 which is the first gen engine before 2012 or 2013 but they never really mention the years I know a lot of issues were fixed with the other gens, are the N63TU reliable? or the N63TU2?
N63 is now 3rd gen with TU3. Not sure if these later generations of n63 have same issues. As far as I know the first gen of m850i using the TU3 from 2019 hasn’t seen any issues yet
Hi, am I able to get the forte seal product I'm in California.
Is this the same for the n63tu3?
Dang! I was considering a 21 M850i. If I do normal maintenance will it last 4-5 years with no problems? Probably won’t even have 40K miles on it.
Lease it, don't buy it! Let BMW worry about repairs. Bimmers depreciate so fast, like the titanic sinking.
Glad I bought a Toyota instead. I really wanted that M550i.
M550 are so nice and super fast but god damn they are expensive.
Thank you !
What do you think of the 540i?
Did you ever find out? I just purchased a X5 M50i with 55k on it what should I do to make it last?
How do I get the Forte Seal Conditioner? You think it will help my oil consumption? I use a quart every 200 miles. I see heavy oil smoke when I cold start it and when I reev it

Hi Dean, i have a 2011 X5 50i with 9.000km on it and i still had no issues. What tips would you give me to try to prevent issues with this engine?? Thank you!!
Mate there is no preventing it buddy most parts on that engine left the factory failure mate it’s not a case of if on the N63 it’s a case of WHEN as it will all go out regardless of the care mate you find the people that care for these the most is the ones that it ends up affecting when they change everything
That’s why bmw was offering extended warranty on this engine for this reason
@@BMWDoctor Wow! i didn't know it was that serious! Do you think that not doing extreme accelerations or waiting 1 or 2 minutes before shutting off the engine would be of any help?

I’ve got a 2014 bmw 750li xdrive with 30k . Is there anything that I should look out for?
Had to trade in my 550i GT with that variant of the N63. Unfortunately car fax had a lot of info on my car that depreciated the value. On my last visit to the dealership, the warranty covered $12k worth of work. Most of it due to engine work: valve replacement for at least the second time and the rear suspension. Glad I had paid for the extended warranty. If nothing else, the internet is a great source of info for this and a lot of things. Obviously uTube helps too. I'm curious to know if a 6 cylinder engine could replace the N63??!!

What about putting a tricky charge at night?
Don’t forget these have all issues from its predecessor but adding internal engine failure
I live in the States and was wondering how do I buy ISTA program and the Forte products you mentioned?
Just get the N63TU and its other improved variations. Those are reliable.
N63, N63TU, N63TU1, N63TU2, N63TU3 , so which one are talking about ? N63 was buid until 2012, N63TU 450hp is a lot different than N63 407 hp it has new injectors , new chains, new internals etc. and it's pretty reliable for what it is .
Are you talking about all n63 engines? Because from what I know those problems are from original N63 that was produced from 2008 till 2012. They have fixed most of those problems in N63TU2.
What exactly did BMW corrected In the new N63TU engine??
Was considering an Alpina B5 but this video convinced me otherwise and it's now struck from my shortlist.

Very very unreliable ! Get rid and don’t look back
i got a 2 year warranty on it its got about 80 000 miles on it so yeah i bought a warranty thanks bmw doctor
@@miguelalcantara7689 At that many miles you might want to have a oil analysis done, not sure if the BMW Doctor mentioned it but you need to add the Rod Bearings to the long list of things that will fail on this engine.
get CarShield, its a coverage for the car that replaces anything that fails in that car mechanically
So does this mean the S63 will also have the same problems?
Why do all the videos talking about the design "flaws" in this engine go to the hot v config? Audi uses it in the TFSI 4.0 and that engine seems to be bulletproof these days. Same for other manufacturers. How about everyone focus on what BMW did different that made this one trash while the other one is "good".
Would you say 6 cylinder diesel or 6 cylinder petrol to be typically more reliable if looked after well. N55 vs n57
N55 AVOID con rod bearing failure is high ON THAT ENGINE N57 timing chain guides BREAK and need the engine out to replace regardless what engine you go for its going to happen its a common failure regardless
if you want something good and reliable N52 is a good solid engine BUT water pump can still be quite pricey aswell as vanos solenoids but overall its a cracking engine and one I sure love my heart is devoted to that engine
BMW Doctor aw thanks. Did bmw start saving money by using shit parts in n57. M57 a superior chain?
Yes they did indeed it started on the M57N engine and then carried on and got worse
BMW Doctor Actually no, N55 ISNT a high risk for rod bearings failure. The only reason the bearings spin is after an oil filter housing gasket job the person doesn’t reprime the oil pump causing the bearings to run dry and boom... rod bearings
Maybe because it cost 20k more 😂👍👍
Could you please make a video or an update about the s63 engine found in the F10 m5 . I am considering buying one and would like to know if it has the same issues as the n63 or maybe even more.
ps
great videos, simple and to the point
@@bertman94 interesting! I didn't realise adding oil cleaned it to any great extent.
