I am a computer technician so this is generally not my area of expertise so I apologize if I used the wrong terms/words to describe my issue but if a computer tech can fix this so can you its that easy.
I have a 2006 GMC Sierra that has the notorious service 4 wheel drive light on. I've tried a number of things like replacing the four-wheel drive buttons and also replacing the transfer case module. My next step was actually to replace the transfer case itself as it seems to be very loud and clicking when engaging. My issue just got worse and now the service 4 wheel drive light was on all the time and I could not engage 4 wheel drive whatsoever. I found one suggestion on the forms to check your ground leads underneath the driver side door. With a 10mm socket I was able to remove the screws and with a Dremel sand all the rust off the bolts and the frame itself. Put it back together and threw some Flex Seal on the top of it. So far my service 4 wheel drive light is completely gone and it no longer is click when engaging to 4 wheel drive. It works better than it ever has. I hope this helps some of you out there that is experiencing this problem. Its a free fix and only takes like 10 minutes so be sure to try this first before replacing any parts.
If it does please hit that like button and comment below that it did resolve your issue so that we can help others out there having the same issue. I imagine this is going to apply to most GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado trucks that have ground wires right below the driver side door.
Man....My 2003 Tahoe has been in the shop 11 Times this year for separate problems. Had a hard couple months with health and other nonstop life problems! My SERVICE 4X4 light came on today with no buttons lit up, And about lost my mind....i Googed and your video came up 1st, THANK GOD! I wiggled the 2 10mm bolts you speak of and works fine now, in 2 mintes. Nobody realizes how a couple minute simple video could help someone from adding alot of frustration! Thank you my friend!!!
Thank you for this video. I was having issues for years not being able to get my 2007 Silverado out of 4x4 low without pulling the fuse and reinserting it. Then eventually it became an issue with 4x4 high as well. The icing on the cake was when I was at camp, needed 4x4 and my service 4 wheel drive light came on. I found your video, pulled and cleaned the ground wire like you showed and it worked. No more problems. I owe you man!
Saw a couple other videos suggesting same solution but yours convinced me to actually do it. It effin worked!! Thank you brother. Cheapest fix ever.
Thank You! I am so glad I happened upon your post. We're having a snowstorm and I went to switch into 4 WD on my 2007 GMC Sierra... I got a Check 4WD error message and the light stayed on Auto selector. I tried everything to switch it to 4WD... nothing. I read your post... I loosened the bolt 2 turns... wiggled the wire and retightened it... Amazing! Worked like a charm. Thanks again.
Thanks man I replaced the switch and cleaned up the connector underneath with new bolts and washers. Saved me a ton of money.
Very well done video. Just FYI this will fix most of the ABS/Brake service messages as well as it is the same ground location. These models are infamous for that spot having a bad ground connection. Good job on the flex seal too! Most people do not think to do preventative maintenance.
Interesting I got a service 4x4 and brake light at the same time would you say this is my issue?
@@zo661 Hard to diagnose over the internet but it is a free and easy thing to test by just cleaning it up and remounting the ground :) Hopefully it fixes it for you!
So I replaced my 4 wheel drive switch, and the actuator on the front differential and my 2003 Chevy suburban was still flashing service 4 wheel drive and switching into neutral. I watched your video an said why not. I took off the bolts, scrubbed the area down, wipped it clean, put them back on and went for a drive. Normally I could only get as far as Walmart, but I got all the way to the next town over and back, have turned on and off the car and the service light is still off and it is staying in 2 wheel drive! So far so good! Thank you!
Who would’ve thought a ground wire would be the cause of the 4 x 4 kicking in without me pressing a button but I check the ohms first from the switch they were good and then I did the cleaning of the ground wires and it started working perfect thanks for the video
Thank you for showing us the location of that ground.. I think alot of these issues with our older trucks could easily be resolved by cleaning all ground wires. Good job. Thank you 💙
I usually start with the simplest fix first. I have a 2003 yukon xl that had the "service 4wd" message. I figured why not start with the ground first. Wa la fixed it . I did notice one thing which may point to the ground being the issue. I noticed that before the fix when I turned on the key the selector switch panel would either light up directly to the red neutral indicator or directly to the 2 wheel high indicator. After cleaning the connections thoroughly I noticed that all the indicator lights light up then ended on the last selection before the key was turned off.In my case the 2 wheel high setting. Stupid easy fix. I used a brass wire brush on my drill to clean the frame and 160 grit sandpaper to clean the washers and ground connections. Total time 15 minutes and it was free. Great vid and thanks for the save.
Change the transfer case actuator module located underneath beside the transfer case and no need a programming just put your car in park snd remove that actuator made a comparison prepare a pen so you can mark the older actuator and look at it the new kne if its same diretlction the arrow and so far my 2007 hummer h2 it never came back the service 4wd solve the issue.
Thanks for the tip! On my 08 GMC Sierra, it was a disconnected (broken off by fatigue) ground wire from the firewall to the engine block and reconnecting it fixed my transfer case switch. Mine was stuck in low 4.
2003 GMC Sierra 2500hd.
"Service 4x4" warning and no lights at the 4x4 switch. Truck stayed in 2wd and would not go into 4x4. Replaced the switch as this was a cheap place to start, but it did not help. Tested the old switch and it was still good. Oh well. Found your video and cleaned the ground contact (two wires on one bolt on my truck). Fixed everything. Thanks for the video. Saved me some money.
Tested the switch and, Everything was fine at that end. then I saw your video went outside in 9 degree weather got it off sanded everything down tried it and it worked. Thanks for the info.
You are the man!!! So stoked I did the research and found your vid before trying the other fixes. 2014 Sierra back in action. Thanks!!!
Tried this first to fix my service 4 wheel drive problem on my 2011 Avalanche. No luck. Thanks for the video. My search continues.
thanks for posting. fixed my 4wd service light problem
Cleaning all grounds with star washers to make better ground connection can eliminate numerous codes
This worked for my 2005 GMC SIERRA 1500.
This worked for my 2004 Sierra. Thanks for video
Worked for me also! Look for ANY loose or rusted grounds!
Thank you so much I just bought a truck and the wire was rusty and now after I cleaned it up it worked so that you
Thanks much - your solution worked for me. Much appreciated.
I have a 2005 Tahoe and cleaned the ground It did not fix the Service 4WD warning, however it fixed my gas gauge, So really happy about the fact I know how much fuel is in the tank now. I was thinking it was the sending unit and that sounds like a lot of work I didn't want to do.
I followed your suggestion, worked perfectly,... thanks!
Thank You for this video. Definitely a Zero Cost First Thing to do! Unfortunately it hasn't fixed mine - but it can't hurt.
My new to me '04, Z71, Burb, 5.3 was also shifting on it's own but I found the black/white stripped ground wire was not attached good behind pass. head. I extended the wire to the firewall body ground that has the flat braided ground wire on drivers side. This fixed the 4wd. switch, crazy door locks, check eng. and spotty no crank cond. I have since cleaned the grounds below seat and the small batt. ground wire on frame below core support which includes ground for main computer. Be aware there is 2 ground wires inside the plastic conduit below the seat and it is possible for 1 ground to break from eyelet and you wouldn't see it. Thanks for the video.
Fixed my problem also. I am going to look the truck over and clean all the grounds I find.
Great video. I attempted this but I'm not as lucky. I've replaced encoder ring, front actuator and switch on dash. Still no 4wd for me :( but thank you for the tip! It was totally worth the time
So where you able to figure it out this worked on my truck for a couple days then the default came back
Did u guys solve the problem? Im having the same issue i did everything i could
mine ended up being the ground on the frame, but when i fixed it the 1st time, i had the key ON and blew a fuse. @@Zero12731
Worked perfectly...thanks a bunch
Worked like a champ on a 2007 Tahoe 4x4 great info, thanks!!
Hey man thank you so much for putting up this video just have my four-wheel drive turn off for no apparently good reason wasn't even using it and watched your video clean up those two negative wires and four wheel drive works perfectly thanks a lot really appreciate it
I have 2004 suburban it was show service plus it was stuck in four wheel drive I did this procedure it fix both problem
My 2005 Chevy Silverado is doing the same thing I will try this before anything else thank you and God-bless
Check and clean ground on drivers side on frame !
going to try this tonight!!! thanks for the info, ill let you know if it works
Yes I can put it into all wheel drive, or 4x4 lite comes on stays on, I can hear it , just wont engage, the fuse is good, checked it, so it could be just cleaning the connecters and wires, and check Transfer Case Oil.
Thanks alot. I just did this and the problem was fixed!!!
I love RUclips bought a new 2003 chevy service 4wd message came up tried your method an bamm shit worked good looking out
Mine was messing up, just wiggled it a bit and its working, going to reconnect and tighten the bolt down just to make sure
Well I put my car in "auto" mode today, parked it. When I got back in, a "Service 4x4" message lit up on my dash, it wouldn't shift to 2x2 and when I went to make a left turn, the front wheels dragged across the pavement and when I made it home -- only because I live no more than 1/4 mile away, I put it in reverse to back into my spot and it didn't even move.
It might be somewhat involved but what about replacing the electronic control with a manual shift lever that use to be on earlier models ?
This worked!! Thank you so much!
Thanks gonna try it on my Z71. Same thing driveing down the street light comes on. thanks for the info.
Works!!
My 2003 Tahoe Z71 has service 4wd light on but does engages in any selection but with a loud clunking sound. And sometimes when I first started it , it would already be in 4wd without any prompting. I'm gonna try cleaning those grounds. Hopefully it's the fix. THANKS
Eric Thibodeaux this is what mine is doing please let me know if this worked for you
I will try this tomorrow. Replaced the transfer case shift motor & it worked for almost a month, but now it's stuck in Auto. Loud noise when it tries to shift. Will only try 1 time, then pushing buttons has no result. Fun stuff working on this mess with so many expensive variables. No mechanic I trust nearby so don't want to go get their opinions or pay for the code scan.
Lmao me and my buddy did this and it fixed my truck thanks lol
2004 gmc half ton
My 01 Tahoe is stuck in awd I replaced the 4 botton setting thing 70$ buks n still doesn’t work I’m going to try and do this tomorrow n see what happens keep u posted !!!!
I’m going to try this, mine is random. If right when I start the truck and shift in to 4 hi it will work but not after it’s been running for a bit
Mannnn I'm gonna try this. Than k you.
I hope this works for me on my 2005 yukon. Got the service 4wd light and no lights on switch
good video-am trying it tonight
All my lights on the buttons are illuminated with no service 4wd. Buttons dont do anything and stuck in 4wd. Is this a fix or an encoder?
Mine goes into 4wd easily but after a few minutes service 4wd light comes on and I have to turn off truck to reset. 'll try this fix
What was it
@@MinnesotaAdam420 the 4wd selection switch was not working properly. Replacing it fixed it.
Going to try it thus afternoon .
This worked on my truck as well , right on thanks for your video !.
Thanks for posting this incredibly helpful information! Do you happen to know the origin of those ground wires? transfer case? transmission? axle?
It goes to the front axle actuator
I just did this it worked but my switch is broke all the lights are lighting up
Thanks. Mine just quit today and I got the 'Service 4 Wheel Drive' message. I definitely suspected an electrical fault, not a component. I'll look for the grounds and try it.
I haven't had a chance. It's been stupid cold here, and I don't have a place to work inside, so I just drove my car most of the time. I have asthma, so fooling around out in the cold is out of the question. When I did drive the truck (2007 2500HD new style), the 4X4 light sometimes came on, indicating a bad connection: ie: poor ground. I'm pretty sure that's it, and I'll try to post when I address it.
Nice video thanks ill try this
I'm going try this tommorow on my truck I hope it's and easy fix
It worked
So my GMC has this problem where it shifts automatically between 4 wheel drive and 2 wheel drive. But it does it constantly
Did the truck ever just put itself into 4x4?
While driving part of my dash and radio shut off then service 4x4 messages comes up for about 1min then everything comes back on and is fine???
You Me mine does the same thing any luck with what it is.
It got rid of service brake booster it got rid of Throttle body reduced engine power and service 4 whell drive
Will this work if I don't have the 4x4 transfer case
Where are these grounds at on an s10 ? Have the same issue
i have a 2002 1500HD chevy silverado. i am in need of help!!!!. i bought my truck on kijiji back in august 2018, has been working flawlessly since i got it on the road. i was finishing work and backing onto a road , put my truck in neutral and pressed 4x4 high. it engaged and worked. when i no longer needed it on i pressed 2 hi in neutral. felt like the 4x4 was still on and it was making snapping and grinding noises everytime i tried to drive or reverse. eventually it slammed me to a stop with the noises as i was attempting to get it off the road. then it was as if it finally engaged in 2 high. i swore i was not going to ever use the 4x4 unless i necessarily had to. drove back to work like nothing was wrong then my truck got spinning as i was trying to back out of a driveway. so i hit 4x4 because my 2wd wasnt going to get me anywhere. this time my 4x4 engaged, the grinding and crunching noises came back as i went to drive forward. called my dad he told me to reverse the truck. i clicked 2 high but the service 4x4 came on my message center, 4 high and 4 low lights wouldn't even blink or light up on switch, said i was in 2 high but the truck was obviously in 4x4 still. i really dont know what to do or where to even begin. my truck had the front drive shaft removed to get it home but still grinded. i got a neighbour to take a battery and manually unlock my 4x4 on my front tires but i think the transfer case still thinks its in 4x4 because we put the front d shaft back in and it started making the noises again. any advice would amazing!!! thank you
Reasearch "pump rub" if your transfer case is full of oil you most likely ran it dry.
I got a 89 GMC Sierra and I have the problem were I can hear the 4x4 in gage but the light won’t show that is in any answer???
Do I hear a 7.3 in the background running
Go ahead and take it to a mechanic who knows how to diagnose and save yourself a lot of money and parts
I have this problem and I only have one wire where there was two in the video. I cleaned that wire and still have this problem. I have a 2007 Chevy Silverado 1500. Guess I'm going to have a mechanic replace the actuator motor and see if that works. Anyone have any other ideas that I might try?
2006 g Mc 6 liter 4x4 lost reverse and won't shift into drive is it fixable
Was the loud click happening every time it turned and then would not let you put it back to 2wd
Blizzard 3o2 my truck would randomly decide to work. When it did the transfer case was very loud when 4x4 was engaged. Eventually its stopped working all together and all i had was a service 4x4 light. The loud clicking is what made me think I needed a new transfer case. However after cleaning the ground wire to the transfer case. The light went away and now when engaging 4x4 its no longer making that loud clicking noise and everything is working perfectly.
Never, Never, Never use the Auto 4wheel drive... That is a transfer cases weakest link. Just act if it is not there
try your ujoint
I'm having the same problem with my 2003 Silverado I just put in a new 4x4 switch and that didn't fix it and i cleaned that ground spot. Just wondering on my truck I only have one ground bolt with only 2 wires. The 4x4 works randomly but when the service 4x4 light comes on the trucks stuck in 2wd with no lights on the switch. Frustrating
x ANUCL3ARBLAST x Sounds like your having a different issues. Try pulling the fuse or unplug battery for a few minutes. Read this tread this may help.
forums.trailvoy.com/showthread.php?t=72712#/topics/72712
Yup I replaced the encoder motor $184 later all good now.
I'm have the same problem I spend 250 for the transfer case module n it didn't fix the problem now I'm gonna try this n change the 4x4 control I have no light on the lights come on in the control only when I start the truck
Yea I replaced the 4x4 control switch and the encoder motor and that fixed my service 4x4. Also i would recommend cleaning the grounds located under the drivers side door there should be 2 of them on the frame/body mount just like in this video, and checking the wires coming off the encoder motors plug and make sure none of them are damaged. A bad ground or broken wire can cause a big mess of problems.
All you had to do was hook up a scan tool to this get a code and replace what needed to be replaced instead of shotgunning parts all over the place That didn’t fix your problem
Why the fxxk would they put a ground wire so exposed to the elements? Chevy is so dumb.
I hope this the only fix for my 2019 custom trail boss coz I'm not impressed that a 4 year old truck is already having a service 4wd issue. I had a 2000 4runner that never had this problem no matter how old it was. Coz it had a manual 4wd shifter.
Can’t use gmcand Chevy in same sentence. The gmc fanbois still, in 2019, think they are different trucks.
Lmao. Yeah there are some moronic tools out there. To their idiot defense, they are 2 different trucks because one has a bowtie emblem and the other just says GMC
