There's no such thing as the spirit of cricket, it's a fallacy. Ever since WG Grace, there's been gamesmanship, cheating, and finding any way to win. That's just the nature of the game.
No one seems to acknowledge that both umpires are on the move before Bairstow leaves the crease. The issue is they didn't call over. He looks up, sees thee standing umpire is preparing to leave the wicket, scratches his back foot behind the crease in a motion as if to highlight I'm behind the crease before leaving it. That's why I think its a bit poor and not in the spirit of the game. Yes Bairstow was a dozy and if it happened during the over he should rightfully been given out, but the reason why there is so much controversy is it's not black and white because to everyone else but Carey everyone assumed the Over was over.

The bottom line is if you push the rules too much, then cricket becomes a lesser product and everyone starts doing this kind of tit for tat to gain an advantage and that’s a shame.
@@humfreycollins2422 you get out in under 12’s like that. A test cricketer should know better than to commit a schoolboy error. “Spirit of the game” is only ever invoked by the losing team when something doesn’t go their way. Time to move on. And I doubt that you are Australian when you can’t even spell it.
Who bitches about the spirit of the game...those who lost
Winners are grinners and losers can please themselves.
Johnny Bairstow should also know that the villain in such pantomimes is always behind you, behind you.
Tim Paine 💚💛 he’s a gem of an analyst
INCREDIBLY????????????????????????
You can’t pick and choose the moments when the “spirit of cricket” applies.
Given England are only 2 draws/1 loss out of 3 tests away from losing the Ashes at home, of course they'll make this a big talking point for the next few days Or even weeks.
If we beat them at Headingley its all over, even a draw will shut up their constant whining.
Love Merv
The bairstow dismissal is an usual dismissal, not because of Aussies it's because he himself was acting stupid and you don't see those kind of mistakes at international level
Bairstow brain fade, for sure. What about his batting partner who was supposed to be looking back up the pitch for opportunities as well as risks.
Bairstow tried the same thing so he must be pretty dumb to think Carey wouldn’t do the same to him.
Scraping the barrel getting Tim Pains opinion I would have thought with his track record
I reckon Bairstow should consider wearing Ronald McDonald shoes. Would give him an extra foot of length to tap down the wicket and would suit his clown like behaviour.
Stokes got what he wanted. He wouldn't want to lose like that, and he didn't.
The spirit of cricket is not in disagreement with the laws. The spirit is : congratulations to an opponent for a100, or a great bowling performance. Or A guard is honour for a retiring great. Or giving public praise to an opponent. Consolation to an opponent for failure, having a beer with your adversary, win loose or draw.... That's the "spirit of the game".
Its got nothing to do with playing within the rules, and finding your opponent's weaknesses and trying the 1% ers.
Spirit of the game ? Bodyline anyone ?
Definitely never watered that 5th day wicket, batting 2nd again by choice.
Whatta 5th day batting wicket, ball sat up and said smash me.
All this because Bairstow/England can't admit they made a mistake!
And to thinks it’s Headingley next!
I’m an English man. It was out - Bairstow was if anything being arrogant doing what he was doing walking out of his crease without acknowledging the Australian keeper Carey or checking that over had been called. Our Prime Minister Sunak should keep his mouth shut. It is highly embarrassing this whole carry on. Australia won fair and square. We messed up this Test Match by batting like schoolboys in the first innings. Well played Australia 👍
Ok I heard his interview with Michael Atherton while fishing, so why did Mark Taylor ignore me when I had my left arm swollen after my cancer treatment on day 5 at Lord's when I was wearing an England hat!!!!! He talks about it as a game but he is avoiding his answers on sky sports cricket!!!!!
Oh yeah I forgot, didn't Mark Taylor resign from the job after the scandal!!!!
There's no such thing as the spirit of cricket, it's a fallacy. Ever since WG Grace, there's been gamesmanship, cheating, and finding any way to win. That's just the nature of the game.
If u know u edge the ball u should walk
No one does that only have to look at BROAD himself
No one seems to acknowledge that both umpires are on the move before Bairstow leaves the crease. The issue is they didn't call over. He looks up, sees thee standing umpire is preparing to leave the wicket, scratches his back foot behind the crease in a motion as if to highlight I'm behind the crease before leaving it. That's why I think its a bit poor and not in the spirit of the game. Yes Bairstow was a dozy and if it happened during the over he should rightfully been given out, but the reason why there is so much controversy is it's not black and white because to everyone else but Carey everyone assumed the Over was over.
Do u seriously think umpire would walk out in 2 sec😂. U must be crazy to think that ball would be dead in 2 sec😂😂😂😂
Which means both Bairstow and the umpires dozed off. Carey let the ball go in 0.875 of a second, so the umpires were just going through the motions.
Geoff Boycott is a tool😂
Stokes..world cup 2019 .last ball Does that comes in spirit of the game...after loosing the 2nd test..you said you don't want to win in this way....but the way you won the 2019 world cup..does it comes in spirit of the game
Poms...they make "Ocrisy", "Hyp"!
Slow motion Stumping in my books within the rules
Find a different place to play cricket, forget about Lords
Out Caught, Out LBW, Out Bowled ... Out English Stupidity! 😉
A lot of "what aboutism..." going on. Usually a sign we know we've done something wrong.
If you remember Dhoni recalled Ian bell in a similar situation when everyone thought the ball was dead. Listen to Sir Geoffrey talk about body line series and how Australia refused to come to England for the next ashes should they persist with body line, even though it’s within rules. The bottom line is if you push the rules too much, then cricket becomes a zero-sum game and everyone starts doing this kind of tit for tat to gain advantage. These things should be taught in the U10, U12 level to play the game with the right spirit and not look for these kind of advantages. Ultimately education and the way you have been taught plays an important part. Spirit of cricket comes into play when you get a batsman out who has not taken any undue advantage. In mankading or stumping or running out, a batsman gets an advantage when trying those. But in this case the batsman hasn’t taken or got any advantage. While I agree that Bairstow was wrong to stroll out of the crease, we also need to understand he was not trying to steal a single or take undue advantage. This is similar to batsman pulling out after a bowler delivers the ball (yet its called a dead ball) or bowler pulling out just coz he didn’t get his run up right. In these situations both batsman or bowler need to bowl or concentrate on one additional ball. I think if batsman or bowler don’t get any advantage on a action, then getting them out on such action/habit is little unfair. In Bairstows case probably the opponents could have given a warning.
And how do u reconcile the “catch” by Stark the previous day. We all saw that was not only a catch but an amazing display of fielding excellence. Stokes could have used the spirit of the game to right an obvious wrinkle in the rule book.
Spot on
@@briansmith975it should have been out, but there was nothing underhanded from England there. It was just a bad call
Boycott's account of the history of Bodyline leaves out key facts. He ignores the fact that the MCC decided that bodyline ought to be banned after the West Indies fast bowlers Martindale and Constantine tried it against England in 1933.
wandering down the pitch without taking the effort to check the ball is dead is the advantage he was taking
It's high time World stopped talking of the nonsense called, 'Spirit of the game'. What matters are the LAWS of Cricket. Best interpreters of these are the Umpires (on & off field). Anything within the Laws is within the 'Spirit of the game'. What are laws for? No more spirits.
Too many people are completely missing the point losing this match was nothing to do with bairstow getting out this game was lost in the first innings you can debate all you you like we had the most perfect bowling conditions and didn't use them we were 181 for 1 lyons was off the field the aussie bowlers didn't even look like taking a wicket but rank stupidity with the batman cost us that match we should easily have gone past there total
Ironic talking about the rules of the game and whatever the umpire says is gospel when 24 hours earlier every Aussie was moaning about the starc decision- at the end of the day we are generally biased towards are team when incidents like this happen with a few notable exceptions.
ENGLAND ARE SO EMBARRASSING 😂
Does it make you cry knowing your city is full of POMS
Tim, where's the hypocrisy coming from?! I haven't see that.
Sandpaper is the spirit of the game. Until you get caught out. Underarm bowling is within the letter of the law too....
Sledging ? Well, the Aussies have an excuse for everything...
Sore loosers ? Well body line certainly proved that.
It's a shame, that's all, that talent has to win at any cost.
Merv said it all fogs the lot of them
Maybe the Urn should be changed to a large Dummy.
It’s ironic that the ashes came about because Australia beat England in the very first test & England were so incensed that they were beaten by the “colonials” they spat the dummy & burnt the bails used in the test(great example of the spirit of the game). And they have been whinging & complaining ever since.
You say about the rules of carey and it was correct but the problem is when you want win at all cost and Mark Taylor avoiding me wearing an England cap. I paid alot of hard earned money and for now tv. Also recovering after cancer which is life or death not the ashes. Do you know that I waited for any cricketer to take photos of me. Every English man took one and when I saw Mark Taylor and I asked to take a photo. He ignored me as I thought he was neutral but I was proven wrong because he ignored me and went to the media box. After chemotherapy and I am just recovering from cancer, I am very upset how the Australians want to win at all cost when it is only a game. Do you know I was one of last few supporters waiting after the match on the 5th day waiting. If you had cancer, you might think differently.
Can’t wait til he bats again…..
There is no controversy in this. Bairstow is out no doubt. There is no spirit of the game involved this , bairstow did not know this small thing even a gully player in Indian villages will tell . England are cheaters . Last weekend elf cup how they won against newzeland . Did they forgo 4 runs no
it's still 2-0.. right?
Apparently England’s way, by McCullum & Stoke’s reckoning. This is where not in “ the spirit of the game” comes in, England not respecting the opposition’s triumphs.

When Test cricket is reduced to a single annual match between India and Australia, I'm sure the Australians will be just as self-congratulatory.
They don't understand that it is the paying punters they cheated of a fantastic contest. That Stokes made it one is testament to his class, not their lack of it.
I expected this from the whingeing pommies, big cry babies 😂
Why did the on field umpires go to the third umpire when it was several metres out of the crease at impact? Because they weren't watching. Why weren't they watching? Because they thought it was the end of the over.
At the end of the day it was a crap way to win! Enjoy it!
If you need to believe that ... best wishes
All I’m saying is it’s like going into a boxing fight and claiming a win but you won by hitting him from behind!
The great fast bowler Michael Holding says as far as he’s concerned the ball was dead! End of story!!
Cummins should learn from gentlemans like MS Doni or Kane Willams. Not from Smith or Waner. Tocksick culture Not changed.
Sad to see Tim left. He did a amazing job to turn Around.
Tim Paine is a man with a chip on his shoulder - possibly because he couldn't bat and was one of the worst Captains I've ever seen. His Captaincy at Headingly is some of the worst I've ever seen.
I take it that you have been a test captain then?
True Australian character. Sportsman spirit matters when they are on the receiving end.
lol Pommy tears are food for my soul. Saltier the better.
Which ever way you dress it up, it's a cheap wicket from the ranked number one test team in the world. Bairstow was a twat, but cleary wasn't looking for an advantage. Let's move on!!
Nithing is cotroversial.mediya and do called English supporters make it .see what rules are saying. English people and their mediya dhould not talj about spirit and ethics
im opening the church of spirit of cricket where hoards of whinging Pompas Poms can attend sing their same old songs and get merry itll be a blast
Utter bollocks. He should have been warned and you know it come on.
You don't leave your crease while the ball's in play.
Why? EVERYONE knows you don't wander out of the crease before over is called.
Do the Australian team have to teach England the rules of the game as well as how to play it.
Typical Aussie reaction, sadly
Gee John, I’m sorry to hear you are sad.
@@TheWhitsboy Thankyou so much, that's kind of you. I'm over it now.
So if was in wicket-keeper s hands less than a second. Means Bairstow walked immediately. Pillick. Boycott double dill...
yea we won 2 nil
Here's a little something I wrote for those gin-soaked jackasses in the Members' Stand;
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗱'𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿
Our game, which is from Heaven,
Sour grapes be thy name.
Our day will come, and we will be done,
In Leeds as we were in Edgbaston.
Give us one day, a day to be glad.
And forgive us our whingeing,
Though we never forgive those who win against us,
But deliver us from losing,
For ours is the shame, the tears and hypocrisy,
For ever and ever.
Sad men.
If you've made this up your good at it
I was an atheist, but I’ve now seen the light.
Sad men!
@@mayursharma7503 thanks. The "members" inspired me.
