I dont think shorttrack is the future of ice skating.
The only advantage is that it can be held on a hockey rink and there is a lot of action. The drawbacks are that races are too often decided by falls, or disqualifications due to pushing. I think the sport is at its limit of what it can be. The skaters are going so fast that it is almost impossible to overtake.
I think the future of ice skating is more in the long track races with a similar format to mass start and/or shorttrack. The long track allows for easier overtaking and as a result less falls and dq's, but it is still very competitive and interesting to watch. I think they should expand the mass start to much more distances and include the dutch style marathon.
For example a 1500m or 1000m mass start with 8 riders (and no teams) per race and no warm up lap, shorttrack style basically.
A long distance (100 lap or so) race with up to 50 riders and teams.
I also think events like all round should be made Olympic.
To accodomate for all the extra time it takes to run the extra events they should consider riding 4 riders per race for all single distances beyond 1000m, instead of 2, especially for the 5k and 10k.
The general public is simply not so interested in watching only 2 riders skate laps for 13 minutes. I love the 10km event personally, but most people do not.

Urumqi, in Xinjian, China. I have seen videos from there, but not actually seen pictures of the outside of it.

The trivia question answer: I don't want to give away the answer but it's altitude is 1,710 m / 5,610 ft. I wonder what is preventing contests from happening there.
