  • Today Nic is fixing an EJ25 that is burning oil by replacing the rings and getting the pistons knurled to prevent rocking in the cylinder.

    Awesome! That knurling of the pistons is pretty cool idea. We had a 1981 Chevy pickup with 250 inline 6 that burned oil so bad it fouled the plug nearest the firewall. Pull that head off and took to a machine shop where they knurled the valve guides to reduce the internal diameter fit to the valves. Worked like a charm! Never knew they could knurl internally.

    Nice job. You work like real mechanic. Not like the RUclips commenters that watch a couple of videos and then think they're an A-tech. If you replaced the pistons you most likely would have had to split the block and bored the cylinders one oversize.
    Knurling pistons and valve guides used to be a common practice back in the day. It gets the customer back on the road cheaply for a couple or few more years. Sometimes that's all they need.

    Ok, I'd like to offer some advice. New parts are very inexpensive. But when you get the piston kit, throw away the rings. The old consumption issue is caused by junk compression rings. Deglaze your cylinder walls and install new pistons with hastings iron rings. That will permanently fix oil consumption problems.

    The problem I have is changed the oil every 3500 miles, used synthetic, and mine burned oil after 40,000 miles (H6 engine). Never badly but it does burn. Now has 90,000 and still burns oil. Won't bother to replace the rings as it otherwise runs fine and never had any other problems. Just a problem with the engine no matter how well you take care of it. Nice video.

    Amazing work, wasn't aware of that knurling trick, I'd probably get the skirt machined back into tolerance though. Ring gaps are also super important with these, and hypereutectic pistons are unfortunately quite brittle and ring-lands can fail if tune is not perfect. Always maintain tune. How is it running in 2019?

    If an engine has over 100k on it, its best just to do new pistons and bore oversize. Those skirts wear down over time, thinning the metal. I have seen the skirts actually break at the wear spot because of that. I also seen a guy put his engine back together with part of the skirt missing. He convinced himself it was perfectly fine that way. Its yours to do what you want. As far as a garage doing it...never going to happen, ever. I wouldnt want my garage name on a job like that. As an owner, the liability is too much of a risk. Clearly, doing it yourself gives you freedom to choose your own method. A garage cannot do that.

    • @69eddieD
      @69eddieD 4 года назад +1

      They sell engine assembly lube. It's a light grease. And an old school trick is to pack your oil pump with vaseline for the initial start up.
      ATF is some handy stuff. It's super high detergent lubricating and hydraulic oil. You can soak your lifters in ATF to get all the gunk out. You can soak frozen parts in ATF to free them. You can soak cables frozen in their housings to restore their operation.
      Any home garage rebuilt engine should have the oil changed after a couple hundred miles, anyway. And knurling is very old school and rarely recommended today; new parts are always recommended for repairs. But guess what - knurling still works! You can knurl and ream your valve guides too.

It means that you can actually swap the ej 253 block to a 255 block or 257 block with 253 heads. and take the 255 and put 257 heads. This is interesting!

    Most people would just junk the car since its uneconomical to repair. It's understandable since most people cannot work on an engine like this, and they would need to pay someone for all the labor that costs more than the car is worth .I like seeing this, a perfect car being restored by professional hands and not thrown away to the scrap yard.

    Good but not good
    Not even close to correct rebuild for those that are thinking of doing it exactly like this.
    1 Rebuild engine using oem spec oil only as lube for all parts
    2 Check cross hatching, honing is not needed if it is intact
    3 use bore (T) gauge to measure how warn cylinder is
    4 always check ring gap on piston at three separate heights in cylinder
    5 lining up wrist pin clips properly will save your engine
    6 be meticulously clean, majority of engine failures are caused by contaminated oil
    7 pre fill OEM oil filter and pull crank/cam sensor connectors to keep engine from firing to prime oil system, turn engine over with ignition(key) for 30seconds then replace sensor connectors and start engine
    8 change oil asap after reaching normal operating temperature as any contamination from rebuild will be in the filter at this point
    9 change oil using oem spec oil and oem filter for longest subaru engine life, always reach normal operating temp before shutting car off and resist long idle times to warm up car, get in and drive
    10 you did really well and saved money doing it. Dont stop learning and taking on new projectsb what I covered only scratches the surface of proper engine rebuilding but can save you from doing it twice and thats worth time/money
    PS I vote engine swap from low km doner vs rebuild unless your time is worth nothing and gaskets etc are free
    Great vid- Bjorn Racing on FB

      What would the correct wrist pin clip line up be? This is the first i've heard of that.

    • @obancameron
      @obancameron 5 лет назад

      @@drkbltn you a master tech or engine builder? I left tons of info out for the proper rebuild. Im not teaching a full engine building class via youtube comments. It takes thousands of hours and many learning opportunities to be an actual mechanic, just because mom cooks doesn't mean she is a chef.
      Think about the forces acting on the piston and install clips accordingly.
      RUclips lets people watch others get away with murder and call themselves pro all the time. Makes for messy inefficient work and many steps missed that may cause failure.

    Subaru has had piston problems since the 1980's. It's a failure in their management and engineering process.

    That isn't going to fix the problem, all your doing is a cheap fix instead of replacing the pistons...Waste in my opinion and that filing is in no way accurate...But props on the mechanical skills.

      I figured as long as you are going that far, just have the cylinders rebored and install oversized brand new pistons. I have done several rebuilds and too many engine replacements to count over the years. I am not tearing an engine down that far just to " fluff" up the engine. If you have over 100k on that engine, a rebuild is in order, period.

      If you treat your engine like sh*t you could drive a toyota/honda and screw it up more. If you take care of your car and actually do maintenance at the recommended intervals. You will rarely have issues period.
