Joseph Wright Art and Science

Joseph Wright was a British painter who is remembered for his paintings which demonstrate scientific concepts and experiments. A man of the enlightenment, Wright was keenly aware of the new ideas of his day and his art shows us this in detail. Wrights excellent paintings illustrate the links between the arts and the sciences.

Finally managed to get time to make a new video! Sorry it took so long, my schedule for the last few months has been hectic. Next one won't take nearly so long! Also, 100 subscribers! thank you all so much! Can't believe there's that many people subbed, it's a great encouragement to keep going!
If anyone has any comments or feedback or suggestions I'd love to hear it. Thanks for this nice video. I was mesmerized by his painting Moonlight Landscape at the Ringling Museum in Florida. I really liked the serenity and tranquility he conveyed. And from your video, I learned more about his artworks. It seems his strong contrast between light and dark was highly influenced by the Baroque art style , and Dutch genre painting. I really like your channel, please share more often. Thanks !

Besides all the philosophical explanations, I am even more fascinated by Wright's use of light... He was able to use the indirect light in his paintings to expound on the things in the surroundings, rather than on the source of light itself... Perhaps the best example was in his "Phosphorous" painting of Brandt, as well as his "Orrery" and the "Bell Jar" one... But, although the light source was the focus and the point of both the "Alchemist and discovery of Phosphorous" and the "Foundry," he still was able to use that light to depict the characters and surroundings in the area well... One other thing, I also disagree with the lecturer as to the identity of the "Philosopher" in the "Bell Jar" painting... I believe it was meant to depict Newton, who WAS a philosopher, as we have learned more recently, but was also strict and dispassionate about his research... much as the Philosopher in the painting seems to be...

We also have a college and a few other things named after Joseph wright. I can't say there are many other reasons for stopping here rather than passing straight through! The paintings really are impressive in real life.
