Hi, this is a comprehensive video for the sunroof, its full assembly, troubles, and components, if you are searching for certain problem, go down in the description to the certain time of the problem you are facing, i listed the major ones by time, and if you watch the full video and be patient, I guarante that you will never regret it.
Due to the long process, and troubleshooting of Bmw E39 sunroof, and since all classical BMW sunroofs has the almost the same mechanism, I put all the problems I had in the process in this separate video , including the main addressed problem which is clicking.
In this video, I wanted to replace my old metal sunroof with glass one, so I bought a new glass sunroof to replace my metal one, it was working perfectly on the car I took it from, but after installation, clicking noise started (gear grinding).
So I followed a methodology of diagnosing the problem, including re initialization, switch replacement, motor replacement, which didn't work.
So I took the sun roof out, put it into pieces, cleaned and lubricated everything, searched for broken parts which I didnt have, re assembeled the whole cassette, yet the same problem persisted.
I swapped the cassette to my old metal one, replaced the mountings for the glass, and the sunshade parts, to realize what was the problem.
eventually it worked and I have a new working glass sunroof.

Hello, through your research were you able to see if any of the sunroofs from the later models could be retrofitted to an BMW E28?

Hi , its easy, what I know that the Polo VW glass roof is compatable with e30, here in Jordan. They have it a lot, but I would recommend you visit realoem bmw, and put your car, then browse the others like e30 if its the same part no or not, this would be your best. Comparasion

Is there any possibility to change only the glass having a metal sunroof without changing the whole assembly?

I watched the video more carefully, I understand that you need glass sunroof, passenger side rail and sunshade. Is that right?

The rails were changed because of bad new glass cassette, you only need a glass cassette with all components, remove headliner, take old cassette off, assemble new, but the glass need to be separated from top first, for ease of cassette installation, it makes it 50% less heavy
