  • The city of Hyderabad was once home to one of the most prestigious giant screen experiences in the world - Prasads IMAX 70MM. Yet, in the last several years, it has not been showing movies in IMAX.
What happened? Why is Hyderabad one of the few cities in India to not even have a single IMAX theatre? The answer involves the evolution of the movie industries in the world, money and Government policies. In the third episode of the Lost Theatres of India series, we dive deep into Prasads IMAX, now Prasads Multiplex

Imagine a kid from Hyderabad, who was too young to understand Interstellar and didn't care about it because of some dumb exams. Later he grows up and discovers this gem of a film. He makes posters of that movie, stick them on his wall. He realizes that he should've watched it in a theatre, and he gets to know about IMAX, the theatre which is 20mins away from his home played the best version of it. Imagine the regret. Imagine being me.

Hmm.. Nostalgic..I'm in a similar situation as you, missed it back then, Now i watch interstellar scenes almost every once in a week in my LG 4k oled TV & Bose 700 setup., and that Hans Zimmer's docking scene BGM., it just rocks...no words to explain..listened to it 1000s of times.. and i always keep wondering how the hell they made this master piece a decade ago.. Mr.Akkineni Ramesh Prasad had given a thought to give best movie experience to fellow Hyderabadis, sadly, things did not work out. Timing is important for any business to run. May be IMAX technology was too early to the game & for the people back then, who doesn't have much knowledge on best movie experiences. Even the economic status of the movie goers has been improved drastically.,Newer players PVR, Asian cinemas with depper pockets had given tough competition to IMAX. OTTs saga is is the last nail in the coffin

Don‘t regret, you can watch older IMAX movies all across the globe and study well and earn, travel. I live in Germany and often I see older IMAX ads as some are rerun just for entertainment. For a movie presenter, they buy the IMAX movies for once and it‘s in their collection. Sometimes you can even book entire cinema hall for personal viewing with friends and family. That’s how we watch Bollywood or Telugu movies on weekends.

I still remember it was in the year 2011. I came for summer holidays to Hyderabad to my uncle’s place. since i was a movie buff since my childhood i asked my uncle to take me to prasads imax one weekend. One Saturday, we did go there and saw the showtimes of all the movies that played. I saw avatar playing there even after 4 years after being released. I think it must’ve been re-released at that point or maybe they’ve chosen to play it. I was damn excited to go watch it for the first time. Also i didn’t have the habit of watching english movies in theatre till 2013 so i was very curious about the experience. Sadly, there was no show playing at that time for avatar in the imax screen on that particular day and then we saw Mr. Perfect playing at that time, so we chose to watch that instead, and then i never visited to prasads later. That was my first and last experience of visiting prasads. Later after 12 years i came back to watch interstellar on the pcx screen which was too good, but i only wish what if i had seen avatar during that time of the trip.😢

While I watched Spider-Man in IMAX screen as a school kid, I understood about the screen only bit later. After finishing all my 12th exams, I remember going for a late night 11pm show with my dad to rewatch The Dark Knight in IMAX screen, only to find out it was sold out. We went again after few weeks and did enjoy the masterpiece. I later watched interstellar in Pune FDFS, but after getting to know about last projection of imax format of the film, I travelled back and rewatched the film again. Good old days when film was everything to me. As with how Prasad’s moved on from imax, even I’m at a stage where doing things for profitability is what is valued.

Bought a ticket from black. Then the manager called me to his office, told they have blocked the best centre seat for me for taking the effort to watch the movie, gave me a free ticket which included coke and popcorn.

I boarded the train for Hyderabad in a general compartment, I sat on the floor for the whole night and reached Hyderabad in the morning just to watch the FIRST DAY FIRST SHOW of Interstellar, in 70MM Analog, the way it was meant to be watched and the last of its kind cinematic experience; at Prasads IMAX! i was just mesmerized by the experience, so much so that I ended up watching back to back shows. Thank you so much Prasads IMAX for providing once in a lifetime experience and Thank you so much for making this video!!! ❤

As a 13yr old kid i saw Under the Sea IMAX 3D and eventually Avatar 1 at Prasads IMAX. Our family travelled from VIsakhapatnam to Hyderabad just for watching the movies as my father felt like showing us the experience. He avidly watched all forms of content all across the India and globally. He read about IMAX experience for years before taking us to the IMAX. Boy oh boy, it was really worth it and I still didn‘t get to relive the experience of IMAX even though I stay in Germany now. Travel, hotel and planning is too costly. Upwards of 150€ would be current day price for that similar IMAX experience that my dad did for me as a child.

Prasad’s IMAX holds a special place in my heart. I’ve lost count of the movies I’ve seen here. It was just 10min away from my home, made it all more possible every time I feel like going. This IMAX was a good 15yrs part of my life, kinda pilgrimage at a point. I used to start saving a couple of weeks a head every time a big release was up. I used to skip school, college, and plans with friends who lived far and cannot make it to Prasad's only to have the best cinematic experience. Sadly the 70mm IMAX projector had to be decommission and not that long after I graduated and relocated. Having lived in Delhi and Mumbai I can say Prasad's IMAX was my fav experience. I aways assumed it was lack of audience due to high fares that let to it. Good to know it was an age old govt policy and not the Hyderabadi cinephiles like me. I wish the policy changes in the near future and Prasads restores the best IMAX experience in the country. Where ever I might be living then, I will come back just to relive that experience once again 🎥🍿✨

By the time I understand about IMAX projection and enjoy it, IMAX moved out of Hyderabad. Luxury comes with a price , people and government should understand this. And espescially for IMAX movies people won't visit repeatedly and experiencing this stuff with that price tag is not less. A person may go to IMAX movies once or twice in a year so for once or twice we can afford that price. IMAX moved out when I was in BTech and by the time I started earning imax isn't there..... My first movie in large screen was Bahubali 2. Ofcourse it wasn't IMAX but that screen itself gave goosebumps. On that day I imagined how interstellar might have looked on this Magnum opus screen. I'm such a movie, Recently there was a reel about sphere theatre in Las Vegas. That reel made me to have a goal to visit Las Vegas 😂😂😂😂.....

Great video and commentary. Like many others, I grew up watching a movie at Prasads Multiplex almost every weekend in the late 2000s/early 2010s. The IMAX opening countdown at the start of every screening is one of the most nostalgic parts of the cinema experience for me to date. I remember skimming through the Eenadu newspaper for showtimes each week before bookmyshow came about. 14-year-old me was hugely disappointed with Prasads' decision to stop screening IMAX format movies back then. One of my biggest regrets to date is not watching Inception and Interstellar in IMAX when I could. Thanks to this video, I now have some closure by understanding what actually happened. It is quite ironic that legislation that once favoured the consumer ended up having the opposite effect when outdated. Oh well, we enjoyed it while it lasted. Keep up the great content!

As much I want to see an actual IMAX again in Hyderabad, I think capping the ticket prices is the best policy a govt. laid out, it makes movies accessible to a lot more people. Staying in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, going to a cinema is way too expensive.
Maybe the govt. could amend policy or offer subsidies to bring IMAX back again.

Prasads screen 6 has the best viewing angle in the country. The other 5 screens are far bigger and better angled than any pvr/inox in the city. Prasads is the closest single screen experience you can get in a multiplex without doubt.
Regarding the price cap, godzilla vs kong is running currently for 400rs. So, maybe in the future, the cap might increase or the govt could make an exception for this format. Especially considering Hyderabad will be the epicenter for ss rajamouli's next with mahesh babu. But someone must appeal. Someone from the filmmakers. Who better than rajamouli again.

This is such an emotional piece of content. This is why I love youtube, and pay for internet. Being a Hyderabadi movie buff, watching someone understand what actually happened and explain it to rest of the country. Wow, amazing stuff. Please keep making great content. Subscribed!

I got really into the IMAX craze while researching it before Oppenheimer, and boy was I heartbroken to find out all this. Now you gotta leave the country to experience real IMAX. It's a shame, really. People don't appreciate fine things, they prefer it cheap. And when they start realising what they're missing out on, it's too late.

Being a big time movie lover I’m really happy I came your channel and I must say that I loved the video. Last year I was in the US and fortunately I got the opportunity to watch Oppenheimer in a 70mm IMAX Screen with the og analog projector and I must say it was something so special that I would never forget in life! I wish we had such screens here as well

Still remember my first Christopher nolan movie, batman begins that i saw in Prasads. Unfortunately i didn't know enough about the significance of the screen or the technicalities of the movie back then. It's been 15 years since I left hyderabad for higher education and work, but one memory that I still cherish is the occasional bus ride to spend my saved up pocket money on some really good cinema

This is a very well documented video, Kaustubh... I loved all the aspects, starting from how it begins, how the movies were celebrated, how the interest diminished... I still regret the fact that i missed Interstellar back in 2014..😢 Nevertheless, am glad you've chosen to do this series and covered it so wonderfully!! I can't imagine any other collaborations, other than Karthik Abhiram!! His explanation about his experience is on point!! Definitely a wonderful watch ✨

Some of the gems I experienced at Prasad’s IMAX that I can never forget:
    Dark Knight
    Dark Knight Rises
    Spider-Man 2 and 3
    Transformers 2 and 3
    Interstellar
    Inception
    Pacific Rim
    Harry Potter 3,4,5,6,7
I may not have fully realised how special this screen was when I watched it, but only realised its speciality after they removed IMAX.

I watched every single IMAX movie that they came out with. Watching the harry potter films on the big screen, was a great experience. Harry potter 4, Avatar, Dark knight and Inception were so good that I kept recollecting and imagining being in those worlds for weeks after seeing the movie.

    Good evening everyone
Just yesterday i went to Prasad's along with my friend and mentioned to him that its been really long since i saw a movie in I MAX and he said to me that its no more and I really felt that i lost something and deep down i had a sense of sorrow it was like all my memories were coming back to me and I realised how i took it for granted that Prasad's would continue to show movies on IMAX and immediately came back and searched on Google as to why and when did this happen ...to my horror i realised that i really haven't been around Hyderabad for long ....though i was brought up in Hyderabad .... work took me everywhere in India and i could sense that things have changed ......now after watching this video i am surely going to Godzilla vs Kong movie slated for day after tomorrow ........anyone willing please don't miss this opportunity atleast .....

Gentleman... respect and take a bow for your presentation and story boarding. Your entire crew, researchers, camera person, editing and the entire team of your which made this happen. Truly enjoyed the iMax when it was there Spiderman specially (seen all 4 shows in single day standing in queue taking tickets, much before Bookmy show days) Like you said, respect past and enjoy the present. Who know what is in future may be IMAX will happen again some years later.

They have a very limited space in the cellar and the rest of the vehicles are thrown under the hot sun even though the outsourced people charge 30 and 50 bucks for bikes and cars respectively.!!!

I watched Pacific Rim 3 timeson this screen. Used to travel from tarnaka and would book tickets only at IMAX. I used to think all movies playing here would be IMAX films and was so disappointed when i watched 2014 Godzilla. It did not cover the full screen and i felt betrayed.😅
Watching Dark knight, Pacific Rim, Star trek, The Dark Knight rises, Avatar and Interstellar on this screen were the best movie experiences in my life.
    Thanks for this video.

If I'm not wrong they are rented the IMAX projector and it uses 24 channel surround sound.

I have watched Oppenheimer recently which is released in Prasad's multiplex big screen firstly i have experienced a next level version of Oppenheimer pcx 4k dual projection with 7.1 dolby atmos was really good still i didn't get any disappointment by the 4k project still its the best and when i came out of the theatre i just thought that what would be if it was imax theatre but still respect the Prasad's for getting that type of experience to the people because of few issues with the policies but still its the best.
Love to watch a movie again.
If there is an other chance i would like to have the opportunity to watch a movie in prasads imax.
I was 13 when the imax when it was renovated didn't know about this amazing gem.

Another great feature about prasads multiplex, is the seating arrangement, no other theatre that I have visited has such a step wise seating arrangement, where there is no hindrance to your eye level, the person sitting in front of you cannot cause any issue to your movie experience. Definetly the best theatre!

My father took us to this theatre over 18 years ago when I was a school kid. I still remember watching a documentary called "Serengiti" and was blown away by the screen size. My dad wanted us to experience "the largest screen in India".
As luck would have it, I was put up in Hyderabad when Avatar released and boy I loved that movie on this screen!
However I am sad that Hyderabadis are missing out on IMAX on this large screen. Coming out of watching Godzilla X Kong in IMAX 3D yesterday, I can tell you the IMAX experience is worth every rupee. Wish govt. did something about it.
