    I bought a 2023 RAV4 Hybrid Limited. When I got in the finance office he started telling me horror stories about expensive electronics failing and how much repair cost. He talked me into a 10Year warranty. When I got home I did a search on the company and only found two negative comments on the BBB website. There was nothing else about the company on the internet. It was like they scraped the internet getting rid of any reviews or information. I was afraid the company might not even be around in 10 years. I went in the next day and canceled it. The main reason I bought a Toyota was for it's reliability. I may reconsider before the factory warranty runs out because of all the fancy features of the limited. Why the industry makes the buying process so unpleasant and there is no honesty or integrity. I dislike going to dealerships for that reason.

      I have encountered problems with Toyota (RAV4 Prime) and Lexus (GX) after 3 yr to 7 years. The extended warranty saved me 2k to 5k. You do not really need it, but glad you have it when you do.

      I've walked out of a finance office without buying the car when they put a hard sell like that on me. I then did more research and went over to Honda and bought one there.

    I was a proud mechanic and did great work for over 35 yrs. Decided to stop working so hard before I wore out my body. Took a job for an extended warranty company. Talking to service advisors, customers, field inspectors. Looking up levels of coverage for all. It made me sick seeing how people thought they were covered “bumper to bumper”. Company manager approached me at 90 day probation period saying, congratulations! You’re doing great and past the probation period. I said thanks but you didn’t pass mine. And I walked off the job. Their jaws dropped. 😁

      Yep I did researched on a VERY much advertised company, "Car Shield" and tons of horror stories on-line and the Better Business Bureau has given them an "F" rating....ouch. When I had my truck in the shop, they asked me if I had an extended warranty and I replied, "I AM the extended warranty...I do all my own maintenance and any repairs I can handle!"

    I bought an extended because I was afraid that the convertible top might break on my IS350C. However, the deal maker for me was that it was 100% refundable, if the extended warranty is never used. The catch was the customer had to request in writing the refund within 60 days prior to the end of the warranty. The company that provided the warranty most likely believe people will forget about the refund or assume the refund is automatic. There was only one problem during the extended period, the side view mirror. However it was a easy DIY fix so I never used the warranty. In the end I got my refund. Reading is fundamental.

    Bought a 2017 Tacoma. Refused the extended warranty. At 38k my power steering rack had a bad leak. Was quoted $3,700 for the repair. My dealer went to bat for me with Toyota to try to get the repair covered, since it was a premature wear. Toyota didn’t cover it, but my dealer actually paid for it. But I wish I would have gotten the extended warranty. But thankful for a good dealership though!

      Most off-road shops cot the bolts and install new ones from the bottom. I hope they flipped the bolts. Even if you lift the engine it's NOT 2700 in labor.

      The biggest reliability myth scam is the one perpetuated by Toyota. Their cars & trucks break just as much as the other brands (with perhaps a bit less frequency). Plus Toyota denies claims at the same rate if not more. People are unfortunately more gullible now than in the past.

      Been in the car biz many years 20+ with Toyota, 5 w/used Dlr & also GM
      Im a skeptic
      This indicates, the leak may not have been an actual costly repair.
      It could have billed as costly for a lengthy procedure
      Many dealers ask for the big fix first.
      As a fall back they do the quick or basic repair,
      ie gasket as opposed to entire replacement.
      I would like to believe your guys did the noble thing.
      Their opening request & ultimate resolution leaves me doubtful

      I did buy my EW from the dealership when I bought a 1 yr old/20K 4-Runner in 2013. Coming up for 7 years ago (62K miles!). About 4 years ago, they did replace the rubber piece that was making the “handle” of the lift gate weird.
      I’m a 75 yo female with zero mech/tech knowledge but have started watching your videos. Love them
      Just texted my dealer service rep and gave him your RUclips info. Also asked for a copy of my extended warranty so I can look for the things you mentioned. Thanks

      He's the only channel I subscribe to. I have had a Toyota truck since 1984, and the end of this coming February, I have another new one being delivered. I learn things that I didn't even know to ask about, giving me a great education on the vehicle I drive everyday.

      Me and my friends have bought Extend warranty, dealer salesman just said “We cover Everything, no problems “. But they did lied when we need trying to fix our problems. Big lied, by Melody Toyota and Recently by by City Toyota.

    best warranty . Put $500 a year on the side and don’t touch it. By the time something break use that money. Now you are the warranty company

      @@justinb1536 Gold does not always go up. In August it was $2070; now it is $1837... an 11% loss in half a year. I remember January 1980, when there was so much hoopla about Gold hitting $850 (equivalent to almost $2700 today). Within a couple of months it dropped to $300-$400 and stayed there for years. Gold has lost about $100 per ounce just in the last month.

      I bought an extended warranty for my new car $1700. Covers for 7 years or 100k miles. Not too bad. Too much electronics on these new cars. Peace of mind.

      I agree. If the odds are good for them, they’re good enough for me. I usually buy certified used anyway, and they come with an extended warranty from the manufacturer. Often the remainder of the original warranty plus the extended certified warranty are longer than the original one if I bought a new car instead.

      Perversely, I am always glad when warranty runs out on something I have bought. I do not have to wrangle with the warranty administrators; I take care of it myself on my own schedule.

    I've typically done well with extended warranties. My last car had a 10 year warranty on it (5 extra years) and in the last 2 years, I had almost $6000 worth of repairs covered on it. That warranty cost about $2300. I keep my cars a long time, so I like the peace of mind. The way I look at it is, I'm prepaying for a few smaller repairs to have the cost included in my payment. Then if/when something goes wrong down the road, the cost is already covered. When I purchased my new Venza recently, I purchased a full 10 year warranty for about $2500. I know the Toyota Hybrid system is very reliable, but these cars are also VERY complex, so if anything does go wrong, it can get very expensive very quickly. I also have yet to have a AC system last longer than 8 years in any car I've had over the years so I figured at the very least, I'll get a replacement AC system out of it (which is typically $2-$3k). From my experience, things start to go on cars after about 7-8 years. I purchased a 3rd party warranty from the dealership as Toyota's ECP plan doesn't go any longer than 7 years (or 8?). I wanted something to cover me the full 10 years. The top level warranty I chose covers all the same things the factory warranty does, but doesn't come with the 3 years of free maintenance the Toyota ECP does. To me, having the few extra years of warranty is worth a lot more than a few extra oil changes (especially since my dealer gives the first couple of oil changes for free already). If you change your cars every 4-5 years, it's likely not worth it to buy an extended warranty since most things are covered during that time already. However, if you keep your cars long term (like I do), it can be a good idea.

      I had the same rationale. I drive a very reliable Tacoma, but seeing how the air-conditioning and electrical audio and suspension components are not under the powertrain warranty I’m happy I went with an extended warranty that covers all of the above.

    AMD, this is the single most important video that you have done! Kudos to you for taking this to the task. The truth is that there are warranties (factory and Toyota Extra Care) and there are vehicle service contracts (VSCs). The factory warranty will cover parts and labor at 100% with NO deductible and use factory parts. VSCs have a long list of exclusions, can require the customer to pay a deductible and use aftermarket, rebuilt or even used parts. Furthermore, the VSC administrator will decide whether they will cover the cost of the repair or not. They could refuse to pay your mechanics' labor rate because they think it is too high. Here is the kicker, that VSC that is advertised on TV all the time has another gotcha - the removal, the tear-down, inspection and reporting fee. Yes, they could require this to decide if they will pay for the repair. In this removal, tear-down and inspection procedure, the owner is on the hook for this. Read the fine print! Check the BBB and other sources for VSC complaints before buying. VSCs may delay the start of your repairs while they think about whether they will be for the repair or not. VSCs are like insurance companies, you are dealing with an "adjuster" (administrator) that will decide your fate when you need a repair.
    If you buy a new car and the finance guy sells you a VSC, it is likely that the VSC coverage will start when you drive off the lot meaning you are paying for duplicate coverage with the factory warranty which will supersede the VSC coverage. You need to have the finance guy put in writing when that VSC period begins.
    Buy a Toyota or Lexus and do the required maintenance on time. My 2004 Tundra has the original brakes and clutch. The only repair that I have made was to replace the #2 O2 sensor because the heating element died. The part cost me $45.00 and 20 minutes of my time to replace it. Toyota's are bulletproof if you do the maintenance correctly and as scheduled. Save your money and take the money for the VSC and put that monthly fee in the bank for repairs. Better yet, take the money that you would sink into a VSC and use it to pay down your credit cards.

      I almost bought an extended warranty for my 12 Nissan Murano which I bought used in 14.The dealer wanted $3500.I declined. It now has 131k miles on it with normal wear and tear and runs and looks excellent! Your right put the money in a bank and use it for any repairs that may come up

      @@jamesbrett567 Well, my Tundra and 4Runner have been nearly bulletproof. My 2004 Tundra has only required the replacement of O2 sensor #2 when the heater element burned out. It cost me $45.00 and about 20 minutes of my time to replace it.

    My first Toyota was a 1975 Corolla. I put 200,000 miles on it and never had a major component failure. She was still running when I sold her. My next Toyota was a 1988 Supra Turbo. I put 450,000 original miles on it. I didn't experience any major component failures until she had over 150,000 miles. So an extended warranty would have expired by then anyway. My next Toyota was a 1998 Avalon. I put 335,000 miles on it without any major component failures. I now drive a 2006 LS430 Ultra with 115,000 miles and no major failures so far. An extended warranty on any of these vehicles would have been wasted money. I get my peace of mind from buying good reliable Toyotas!

    My dealership experience as a tech was that dealers spend the bare minimum and cut every corner possible to get the used cars through service and onto the lot for sale. I was removed from one for refusing to replace unneeded parts under extended warranty to pad the dealer's pockets and boost the service manager's numbers. Buyer beware.

    1. If you're going to do it get extra care, not another company.
    2. Are you planning on holding onto your car past the powertrain warranty period? If so maintain it and do NOT use the Toyota service schedule which will tell you your transmission and differential fluid is lifetime. It also states your coolant is ok to 100K. I recommend 30-40K on automatic transmissions, coolant at 60K, Brake fluid every 2 years, Manual transmission and differentials @ 60K. Oil and filter changes at 5k with conventional and 7.5K with synthetics are ok providing you use OEM filter and check the oil in between changes at least every 1-2k. Do this and it's doubtful if you'll need to spend the money on extended warranty. BTW I am a former MDT who currently owns his shop and I have 38+ years in the business. My first Toyota certification was obtained in 1985.

    When I purchased my wife’s Highlander, Finance manager asked if I wanted extended warranty. My words to him were....”No thanks, that’s why I’m buying a Toyota, plus the money I save from not buying an extended warranty I will put it aside and use it for oil changes and regular maintenance”
    He looked at me and told me no one has ever put it to him that way. 9 years later car is still running great with basic maintenance.

      Purchased a 2011 Kluger, that's what the Highlander's called in Australia. After 11yrs and 200,000klms, still runs like a dream and never had to replace anything. P.s one thing they didn't tell me, it's speed limited to 185kph😉

      My 2002 Prius (now my son's) needed its first repair besides the usual consumables - tires wiper blades, 12V batteries, a windshield (Arizona is the Land of Flying Rocks) - at 198K miles: the inverter coolant pump. $150 plus a few hours getting to it and life was good. It just got a hybrid battery rebuild ($2000) out of my pocket at 210K miles and 19 years old. Would I really have spent only $100 per year for an extended warranty that would actually have paid for those, and would it have extended past 200K miles? Sure, why not? Any wacky thing _could_ happen.

    Keep in mind that the Toyota extended warranties can be purchased at a later time, as long as you do it before the comprehensive warranty expires (3 years, 36K miles). Also, the price for the Toyota Extra Care extended warranties are set by the dealer, so it’s a good idea to shop around. Toyota can cover out of warranty repairs if you contact the corporate office. However, they take into consideration how far outside the component is from its respective warranty, how many Toyotas you may have owned (loyalty), and your service history with a Toyota dealer.

    So much honesty here! Appreciate this video. In April 2019 i bought my 2013 ES350 with only 30,009 miles on it from a non-Lexus dealership. THe original owner traded it in along with a high mileage BMW. Since i financed it, i decided to get a 4 year 48k miles extended warranty. I did it for piece of mind, yes it’s similar to car insurance. It’s for a “just in case” situation. Although these Lexus ES350’s are virtually bullet proof, you just never know. In hindsight now after owning this for almost 2 years, i wouldn’t get the extended warranty if i had to buy a similar ES350 today. at that time i lumped the warranty into the car finance so it wasn’t a big upfront cost.

    One of the main reasons I now drive a Toyota truck was when the transmission failed on a GM truck 2 days after the factory warranty lapsed and GM told me they wouldnt cover it, despite me being a GM employee at the time . Ive always been more than happy with the way my local Toyota dealer has handled any problems my truck has had.

      GM does not build quality vehicles. I have employee discount on Gm vehicles. I have two Toyota's and two Honda's none of them have had problems except oil changes and maintance routine. All four vehicles are in the family. My father is a GM retiree and they do not care about them either. My Father owns a Honda as well!

    I never buy extended warranties, but I made an exception when I purchased my 2015 BMW X1 used in 2016. I now have one year remaining on my extended warranty and when that's over I'm selling the X1. I've heard too many horror stories about older BMWs and their repair costs.
    The extended warranty I purchased was a BMW warranty. There is NO WAY I'd buy an extended warranty through a third party.
    Edit: putting that BMW up on the screen to illustrate vehicles that have continuing problems made me smile.

    Andy, I’m an engineer, I don’t buy warranties, period. I’ve been driving cars since 1965. I have purchased many new cars. I don’t buy cars for less than 6 years (except 1971 Vega, 1980 Citation, & 1985 Eurosport wagon......GM drove me to.....drink.....no to change). Since I changed to Honda, 1995, my car year length has increased to 10+ years (150,000 + miles). I purchased my first Toyota (RAV4 in 2017, FWD, I live in Chicago, wife’s car) and it has 50k and is running flawlessly! I drive a 2009 CRV, 120k, couple of problems (brakes, ground) ......annoying but minor. The Honda dealer offered me an extended warranty for my wife’s 2006 Accord when it was new, 100k, 4 years, for $1700, supposedly a Honda warranty. In 4 years my wife won’t exceed 60k miles, and that was the regular 3 year(60k miles) warranty. The salesman said if I didn’t use the warranty, they would return my money. I never asked the salesman, what hoops would I need to jump thru to get my money back. I didn’t purchase this useless warranty. The first repair on the Accord was at 170,000 miles, the starter needed replacing. The aftermarket new starter cost $85, installation was $100. Thanks for this great video....hopefully you have taken the blinders off the sheep’s EYES! Jim

      Seeing as how I’m a master tech at a dealer I’ll agree with you while disagreeing. He stated in the video that it’s pretty much an insurance policy. So for instance if your engine started leaking oil from the rear main seal or a torque converter failure all of which can and does happen on rav4’s. I can tell you on a RAV4 it’s a 16 hour job according to the pricing guide. 16 hours times $140 per hour, pretty much paid for itself. So hindsight is 20/20. You may never need it, you may use it every service which does happen since our extended warranties cover axles and water pumps which also fail on Toyota’s often and I’d rather get the factory parts and not remanufactured or after market stuff. However this is my 2 cents. It’s like a tool to fix things that never go wrong, I’d personally rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Either way no wrong answer, preference.
      After I wrote all that, on the 2017 RAV4, Toyota radios seem to have a higher then I’d expect fail rate. Some radios I’ve seen for exchange units cost as much as 2 grand and as little as $400. That warranty could come in handy unless you wanted to spend and wire in an aftermarket radio and all the things to make it so your back up camera and steering wheel controls work with it.

I haven't had a rear main seal problem in the 25 years I have been using synthetic oil... it can happen, but what are the chances? That is why I check carcomplaints.com for common problems and carsurvey.org for satisfaction for the model and year I am considering. They don't help much on newer cars but they flag the really bad stuff.

      I see you do your homework. That’s good but like you said it doesn’t help on new cars. So that’s a benefit for me being in the industry and having living lived in my area for half my life. If I’m curious about for example a Kia stinger(only car I could think of off the top of my head that’s fairly new) I’d pop up at the Kia dealer down the street and talk to some techs. I also own a Subaru and when I’m at the dealer I’ll go up to some techs and ask questions. More often than not they’ll keep it real with you and tell you if they’ve seen problems. So we can agree knowledge is power and yes I realize that sounds lame haha

    We got the extended warranty on our 2017 Tacoma. It’s been a great trouble free vehicle……except for the air conditioning that essentially disintegrated after five years. It cost us zero to fix as opposed to thousands without the warranty. The insurance comparison is very true.

    With the extended warranties a lot of people don't realize that they can actually get reimbursed for their warranties and they can get a check in the mail which is what I got when I recently traded my 18 Camry for a 22 xse. 2 weeks later I received a check in the mail for my warranty which I never really had to use so people need to keep this in mind...

    I brought my friend who owns the Insurance Agency I go to, He talked me out of all the warranties on my Tacoma Trd PRo. Told me I had full Insurance and it was a Toyota, I didn't need the any of Extended warranties. Love the Knowledge you share, Thank you bro

    I bought extension warranty for $1600. After two years I changed both front wheel bearing, and one rear bearing after two months and after six months another wheel bearing. It’s more than $4000 for all of them. Extended warranty was very useful. I saved a lot of money

    I liked when you talked about waisting money, on an extended warranty, and then compared it to car insurance which you have to get and don’t always collect on. I usually would keep a car at least 10 years with low miles and get an extended warranty. I would get at least 2 claims and get some use from them. I can’t stand those 3rd party warranty companies that always call you saying that your warranty just expired and try to sell you coverage!

    A most timely and informative video for me. I'm close to the end of a 3 year lease on a 2019 Toyota with a very low miles. I decided to buy the car and purchase an extended warranty. Shopped on-line and at the dealership from where I leased the car. Prices in the $3k to $4k range for 8 years/100k miles. Decided to go with the Toyota VSA Platinum for which my car is qualified. Thought I would check if the quoted VSA price was negotiable and called 2 other dealerships. Both quoted prices significantly lower than the original dealer's. I learned from your video that the powertrain warranty on new Toyotas goes to 60 months. All good.
    As an old DIY amateur mechanic on old British cars, I enjoy very much your repair videos.

    This was some very good information. I laughed at when you said: Lifetime Power Warranty. My local Toyota Dealership offers that. They advertise it in every commercial. I like an honest mechanic. When I bring my car in for service at a Toyota Dealership. Tell me everything that is going on with my car. So I can stay in the know of what's going on with it.

    Went back to Toyota dealer today to cancel my extended warranty. Bought a 2021 highlander and they tried charging me $2700 for the extended warranty and they were very pushy with it. Warranties usually cover the things that will most likely not go bad…

    I have a 2018 Toyota Camry XLE Hybrid, the driver side headlight malfunctioned, 4 trips to the dealer the replacement was $1900.00, I bought the Toyota Extra Care
    Platinum warranty 10 years 125k miles for $1100. You also can buy the Toyota warranty from any dealer as long as your car is still under factory bumper to bumper 3 years 36k miles warranty. My local dealers wanted around $2100 for the same warranty that I got for $1100 from an out of state Toyota dealer.

    24:57 In 2004 I bought a new Sienna. I did not buy an extended warranty at the time because I knew within 5 yrs I would get a Highlander as I buy my vehicles for their purpose. Well the vehicle was kept instead as a sport hauler, a children then Grandchildren transport! Every three years I changed rotors and brake pads. Never played how far one can go on tires and always changed the oil every 3 thousand miles. The only thing replaced in 20 years was the starter. After year 5 we put away $1000 for car repairs. Now instead of having spent money on a warranty we have $15,000 to put down on a lease or new purchase. We put only 149,000 miles on vehicle and can still get enough value to go out for a weekend if we sell it!! Note: We bought a warranty on a Saturn for our daughter years ago and it was truly worth it!

    Got Mercury extended warranty platinum for my Prius from the credit union who offered me the loan. It lowered my loan rate and covered tires damage and deductible on comprehensive insurance claim besides mechanical breakdown. So far it had paid itself back and still valid for another 25,000 miles. A genuinely good product.

      @@gavnonadoroge3092 2 incidents on blown/damaged OE tires (still relatively new; fragile, expensive and only available from dealers). Also a $500 credit on cracked windshield (expensive too with sensor placements). They already exceed the $650 I paid for. Maybe one more minor repair but I forgot what it was.

    AMD, you always give great advice to us Toyota owners. I bought my 22 Tacoma in March of last year. Following your advice I asked for a oil change at 5,000 miles. Service manager said it is not due until 10,000 but we can move this one up and you will have to pay for the 10,000 mile oil change. So yesterday I went in for my 10,000 mile oil change, same service manager said well will use your last free service for this. I said well so much for the 2 years free service. He said that is all that is allowed by Toyota because the truck is designed for oil changes at 10k intervals. I’m not sure that I am being told the truth. He tried to tell me that I was not understanding the way that Toyota builds the engine now it no longer needs oil change or service as the old ones did.

    We've had two vehicles with extended warranties: My 2008 Camry LE (2.4L) and my wife's 2013 Honda Fit Sport. For mine, the extended warranty was used, quite a bit. Before the six years (100K miles) was up, the rack-and-pinion and radiator were replaced, along with a transmission seal leak. (Later, the ubiquitous problems with the falling sun visors and the melting dash were dealt with, N/C). For the Honda Fit, well, just a couple of Dunlop tires (which were terrible, BTW). So, as they say, mileage will vary.
    On a related note: It's my understanding that work done under a Toyota Extra Care warranty is not as lucrative, for the technicians and the dealership, on a per hour basis, as non-warranty work. I have also heard, from multiple sources (text and conversation) that because of this relatively reduced hourly rate, warranty work is often not assigned to the most experienced and skillful techs, but shunted off to a lower-level technician, whenever possible. Sometimes that produces poor outcomes.
    Finally, there's the proverbial "elephant in the room" vis a vie dealerships (and independent or chain shops) as service sites. Generally, I've heard this described as the split between "diagnostic" and "merchant" cultures. A diagnostic culture goes to an accurate analysis of a car's potential for emergent or actual problems, and offers preemptive or immediately necessary remedies based on accurate diagnosis. (You're clearly in that camp, the diagnostic approach).
    On the other hand: Many dealerships (and independent/chain shops) sell services, whether they are necessary or not. Case-in-point: The local Toyota dealership pushes transmission flushes, which we know are terrible for transmissions. I've gone as far as to show them the TSBs from GM and Honda, explaining to these dealers that they will void transmission warranties (for GM and Honda vehicles) if flushes are performed. . These "wallet flushes" are high profit services, so these kinds of recommendations continue, even if they are unnecessary or even harmful to vehicle life.
    AMD, you're clearly an ethical practitioner of a diagnostic approach. I recognize and value that you have t technical expertise, communicative skill, along with a code of conduct. (And some service writers and shops have this ethos, many do not). Eventually, I hope that you address, in a general way, the difference between these two types of culture around auto maintenance and repair.
    Again, it's a great video, a significant public service.

    I've owned 26 cars during my life and 8 of those have been Toyotas. I'd say NO to extended warranty. I would have lost money if there was an extended warranty on any of the eight had I purchased one.

    I really really like your video, especially this one. Yes, the warranty does not cover typical things that fail like tires, brake pads/rotors, spark plugs, 12V batteries, timing belt, clutch, Struts, shocks.
    Some covers bushings, stabilizer rings, steering linkage, brake pads, bearings, brake booster in Hybrid, hybrid battery, valve cover gaskets, sparkplug seals, thermostat, sliding doors, lock-latch, and water pump.

      I have the Toyota factory extended warranty on my 2015 RAV4 which I bought new. My water pump failed 6 months ago and it was 100% covered under the warranty and got a free RAV4 loaner while it was being replaced. I am very satisfied. That it is the only problem I have had with the car so far.

      @@rgerepka Thanks for the info, good to know, I was wrong about the engine parts. Every extended insurance has their FINE print that is tricky. But usually, they do not cover wear items like tires, brake pads/rotors, spark plugs, 12V batterie, and clutch. Some cover shocks/struts, but not all insurances do that. How much did you pay for the extended warranty, for how long (miles/year)? The water pump typically lasts at least 150k miles. The problem with hybrid, they use an electric water pump and do not leak, they fail internally from disintegrating plastic/nylon rotor or propeller.

    I think some people have issues with extended warranties at purchase because they never factor in the potential $2000 extra the warranty could add to their purchase when they're already at their max purchase price or they may have experienced a year or two of maintenance issues after a used car purchase of things the warranty doesn't cover anyway. Not to mention some warranties are only for a set time after purchase. If I buy a 3 year warranty and nothing ever happens until year 4 when my engine or transmission goes up then I'm up a creek anyway. It's a roll of the dice. I say if you're going to warranty the car the put that price on the sticker. Don't shock me when I get to the finance office. My two cents.

    Good advice, I have to tell you I had a very rare “lifetime powertrain” warranty. It was only offered through Chrysler for 1 year 2007 and it was free. I kept the car 13 years. They replaced seals, driveshafts, gaskets and in the end at 227,000 miles an engine...all for free. I kept a paper trail through the dealership of everything I had done to the car...they never questioned any claims. On my new 4Runner I have an extended warranty through my insurance company which I’ve used before without any issues...very inexpensive. Thanks for the information.

    I've been to numerous shady Toyota dealerships recently, that pride themselves on their lifetime warranties. Thanks for reassuring me about these bogus in-house warranties, BTW another great video. Why isn't corporate doing something about these stealerships. Sadly to say this is the last straw with Toyota for me.

      Keep in mind dealerships are not owned by the manufacturer. They are owned individually. Dealerships make very little money on new cars, they make majority of their profit from backend products such as warranties, paint protection, maintenance products (basically all the products they try to sell you when sitting in the finance office signing papers), and their service department.
      I’ve never bought a warranty, I work in the business and just know better. It’s almost always a waste of money,

    I had a buddy that co-owned an appliance store with his dad. They didn’t make much profit on sales of stoves, washers and dryers. What kept them in business was extended warranties. Greg said that for every dollar a customer paid for the warranty it cost the warranty company .10 in covered repairs. It’s crazy to buy a warranty on a car that is covered by a new car warranty.

    I bought a certified 2012 Camry in 2014 and purchased the extended warranty as well. Since I would be using the car for long-distance travel, I thought it a good idea to have one. Yes, I thought that I may never need it and that it may be extra monies laid out at the time of purchase, I always rested well that I had that extra coverage in the event I needed it. I did have a few things that were covered under the warranty so I would definitely do it over again. Thanks, AMD, for another great video!

    I bought a used Tundra with 5.7 V8 only 35k miles. It came with 100k extended warranty. So glad to have it when I discovered dreaded cam tower leaks at 75k. A different Toyota dealership covered entire repair and gave me a RAV4 loaner. $50 deductible.

    I have encountered problems with Toyota (RAV4 Prime) and Lexus (GX) after 3 yr to 7 years. The extended warranty saved me 2k to 5k. You might not need it, but glad you have it when you do.

    I was a mechanic for 30 years and I agree with you on extended warranty. Is no different than paying for car insurance. Why not. I got so many scam calls after I got my extended warranty. Claiming to be my extended warranty and emerge not. I can’t remember how many times I went the dealer to ask and told that was scam, don’t worry about it.

    Since my previous post something relavent to this subject has happened. Over 2½ years ago we bought a 2009 RAV4 that had less than 19,000 miles on the odometer. The Toyota dealer sold us an aftermarket warranty along with the vehicle that was another $1400. Initially, I balked at spending the extra money thinking I won't use this cause I'm buying a low mileage Toyota. Well, I just got a call from the dealer that I can pick up our Toyota in the morning. They've finished replacing the transmission with an OEM remanufactured unit.
    I'm glad I had that 48,000 miles, 4 year warranty. It will expire in another 1500 miles.

    Thanks for educating consumers it's rare to hear someone tell the truth about these things I was a diesel mechanic for a long time but I'm also a NYC Firefighter i ways do my due diligence when buying a vehicle and rarely get an extended warranty because I can do almost anything that can go wrong but because i work two jobs I would sometimes buy a warranty on certain vehicles because if something catastrophic goes wrong I'd rather it be someone else spending the time to fix that my off time is way to valuable to me

    I bought an extended warranty for a new Toyota in 2011. At the time I thought it was a good deal at $2k for 10 years and 120k miles. I ended up using it for a water pump replacement at around 90k. This is on a 3.5L V6. The water pump sits about an inch from the passenger side body/frame. The replacement is a bit labor intensive. Dealership gave me a loaner while my car was in the shop. I think I got my money’s worth for that warranty.

    I have owned several Toyotas for over 30 yrs. Never bought an extended warranty. I always maintenanced when needed, changed filters every 6 months to 8 months....most expensive fix was the alternator was replaced on my Tundra but that was about 6 to 7 yrs after purchase and about under 1 k.

    I said no to all the extended warranties for my 2016 Corolla S. Five years and 60k miles later and she still runs as smooth as day one. I just did the 60k service myself including the atf and I'll be flushing the pink coolant soon. The garage has really done wonders in preserving the exterior, all the plastic trim on the outside still has its glossy black sheen.

    You can get a prorated portion of the warranty back in the event you sell your vehicle. Did this with Honda/Acura Care from Honda/Acura when I sold my Acura. The only warranty work utilized was to replace the hood struts that were failing after 4 years or so... YMMV

    Thanks for your channel and advice. What I did not realize when I bought a 5 year warranty in 2015 for a used 6 cylinder 2012 XLE Camry were the years covered. In mid 2017 I needed some work done which would have been covered under the warranty. However, the warranted years started coverage when the car was made in 2012 not when I purchased it in 2015. So my warranty had expired in January the month I had purchased it. This was Toyota’s warranty. No one explained that to me when I purchased the warranty. It was probably in the fine print that I did not see before purchasing the warranty. Lesson learned. 🙁

    I bought the wraparound to go with my 2018 Corolla S $1200. 40k miles and dealer certified . 7 years 120k miles warranty. The warranty covered the waterpump replacement. $ 500. Job at Toyota. I paid cash for the warranty. Peace of mind for me if the engine or transmission go bad. I recommend it if you can afford it😊

I'm 64, and had done everything I know to do, to locate a real mechanic, that will work on my cars the way they would work on their wifes car...with care. I've yet to find one. I know they are out there....but it's like finding a unicorn.

    Great advice given here! I always heard if you are considering getting an extended warranty get manufacturers warranty. Find out what the deductible is & fully know what’s coved & what isn’t .

    the best warrenty is routine maintaince change the transmission fluid every 25000 miles change the oil every 3000 miles change the fluid brake power stering every year.

      @@southernc4919 I’m with you. That is a bit excessive. Of course, there’s not really “too much maintenance,” so if you want to put in the time and money, then more power to you. Your maintenance schedule matches mine.

    My brother bought a used 2013 Prius V from a Toyota dealer about 18 months ago for a little under 10k. Last week, the Prius V blew the head gasket. The dealer is now replacing the gasket plus the catalytic converter. Parts and labor - $ 8,700 !

    Only buy an extended warranty if your 'Toyota' is made by Subaru, BMW/Magna Steyr or Mazda. The lifespan of my Toyota has been e-x-t-e-n-d-e-d by Krown Rustproofing and Amsoil Signature Series synthetic oil for nearly 16 years and there are no signs that warranty will be running out any time soon ;-)

    I recently bought a 2020 rav4. The only extra thing I opted for was the rust protection. The car still has the factory drive train warrenty up to 100k or till next October. The extended warrenty they offered me only covered internal things like power seats or minor electronics. I figured if these things break I could fix them myself or pay out of pocket.

    Just bought a 2021 Nightshade 4Runner, was quoted $1,700 for 125k mile 8 year Toyota Extra Care Platinum warranty. For 8 years, it works out to around $17.71 per month for 15,625 miles annually, which doesn't seem that bad. Haven't decided yet, but the price seems worth it since we plan to keep for around 8-10 years.

      For reference, one year later.. I just went through the car buying process. The 150k, 10 year Extra care is $3,100 for a 2023 Corolla SE. I didnt pay that.. but just for reference, I negotiated it down to $2,100. Being retired I felt it easier to budget for repair expenses in the future knowing I was covered.

    Use 2011 Prius air-conditioning went out cost $5000, it was over 100,000.00 miles, a warranty help out very well

    Great video overall. My brother bought his Toyota and purchased extended warranty, not too sure what company he went with. I do know they sent someone out to inspect the car and authorize if it could have the warranty in effect, great policy too if I recall it was 125,000 miles or 7 years from the date of manufacture and covered most of the things mentioned in the video that are important to have.

    I’m generally not inclined to buy extended warranty coverage. We bought one for my wife’s new 4Runner for a couple of reasons: 1. It is a Toyota warranty vs a third party 2. It’s not only transferable but you can get a prorated refund if we sell it prior to the end of the term.
    Piece of mind to go to 8 years / 96,000 miles seemed pretty affordable for an extra $3k on a $50k truck.
    Business manager pointed out the degree of tech in new cars and that some of that stuff can go and be a costly fix down the road. Fair point and influenced our decision.

    Well THIS was timely! Picking up my 2023 Tundra this weekend and this was all good information I will ask the "warranty rep". I have a neighbor couple, wife being a previous Toyota dealer finance manager, the guy is an Autonation service manager. They both say "BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY", but add what a reasonable price is for it. They also said "Toyota Extra Care only!" No 3rd party companies!

    Two tips! If you do decide to get a warranty from the Toyota dealer on a new car, shop around at different Toyota dealers. When I bought my last Toyota Avalon, I researched and found where a Toyota dealer in Greenville North Carolina (I believe) was selling them for $950 instead of around $1700 at that time. I did use it a few times. It was worth it on that car. I made my money back and then some. Another thing is sometimes you can check to see if there is a secret warranty by the manufacturer for issues with cars that they don’t recall, but they are known to have the issue. I told a friend about it and they were able to get their newly purchased Grand Prix’s transmission replaced at no cost.

    I bought an extended warranty on my new 4 runner. Did not plan on it. But he kept lowering the price every time I said no. And he even lowered the deductible. Then I finally gave in. And less than a year later my sun roof went out. They had to replace the whole thing at $2700. Glad I had the warranty.

      The factory warranty is longer than a year. Did you mean a year after the factory warranty ended.

      The factory warranty would have covered it for three years or 36k miles whatever comes first.

    If you have a new car, some mfg allow you to buy an extended OEM or factory warranty as long as you are still under the new car warranty. So if you are at 2yrs and 30k, you could buy the factory 8yr/100k extended warranty. Also, you can buy that warranty from pretty much any same brand dealership, it doesn't have to be where you bought the car from (depending on local laws).

    I drive a '97 4 Runner 391,000 previous owner didn't buy an extended warranty I bought it with 100 000 17 years ago Truck runs great!

    I bought my Kia with a Lifetime Power train warranty...6 years and 101k miles later a bearing rod failed. I tried to use my lifetime warranty and was told that the dealership had sold to a new owner and they don't honor the warranty of the past owner. Luckily, there was a recall on my car that I had done through Kia directly, that was part of the cause of the failure so I get it fixed still, but still mad about the dealership games.

    A lot of Toyota dealerships offers lifetime powertrain warranty to their Toyota vehicles including the the dealer where I bought my Highlander and said you can take it any Toyota dealerships within US.

    wrote service for a while, guy moving from out of state has his heap towed in, short story long, he needed 7 or 8K in repair to the engine (Audi) and his warranty company was under bankruptcy protection. Other most memorable was a lady had a cat tangle up in her serpentine system. He'd been curled up in the warm engine bay. 5K in damages, had a hissy when it wasn't covered under the CPO program...Good video.

    Just purchased a 2020 XLE Highlander with 20000 miles on it. We bought the 7 year warranty for $2000. I figured if it had 20k miles Bc it was a rental it would be worth it. Time will tell I guess

    I just purchased a 2022 Rav4 Hybrid and a 2022 Tundra Limited Crewmax Iforcemax. These will be the last vehicles that I buy. I am a disabled vet so I don't do a lot of driving. Miles per year will be about 7k & 3k respectively. My dealership wants 3k for the Platinum Warranty. I need your advice. I have the highest respect for you because of your honesty, which is getting to be very rare these days. Thank you so very much.
