My family is from Magdalena, we still have family that live there! My papa passed away just last year, and he’s in that cemetery you visited 🤍 thank you for covering this tiny town that means so much to me! 🤍🤍🤍🤍
The problem with Magdalena is water availability. The town well, which has always had slow production, has run dry as recently as last year. It took a couple of months to recharge. If not for that, Magdalena would already be a retirement community.
My husband is retired Army. We live just west of Magdalena, near the airport. We love it here. We go to Kirtland AFB when we need access to military services (such as the commissary). It's a long drive though, so if you don't like being on the edge of nowhere, Mag may not be the place for you.
Thank you for posting this video! I'm from Alabama, but our family lived in Magdalena from 1967 to 1974. My parents were Southern Baptist Missionaries to the Navajo Indians of the Alamo Reservation 27 miles northwest of town. I brought my wife and daughter out there on vacation in 2007. It was very nostalgic to see the home where we once lived as well as where I went to school. We moved back home to Alabama in 1974. I want to come back to visit after I retire, which is just three years away. There's so much I want to show my family that we didn't get to do during our last trip!
It is not my practice to respond to many RUclips videos. However, I have thoroughly enjoyed your presentations around New Mexico, and it’s ghost town, as well as some of the small communities you have highlighted. Just as an FYI, my mother and her sister were born and grandma butters hospital in the 1930s. This captured my imagination and I have Thoroughly enjoyed this video of Magdalena. My mother was born to one of those ranching, pioneer families that you spoke of. We have lots of connection to family and friends in that area. I’m not sure if you have done a video on Pie Town but that is another interesting little community. Also, Quemado would be a fun video For capturing the pioneer history and ranching communities of the early settlers. Keep up the good work, your videos are pure pleasure to watch.
Oh Pie town.. saw it on cbs Sunday morning then met a girl on tinder and went on a date for pie with her. I was saying to her I’ve never hit a deer before… haven’t even seen one yetttt… and I was 1 foot from hitting a large one! Her mom had hundreds of acres so I imagine how much her ancestors started with! Beautiful, but unless I had time to spend there, I don’t think I could live there without being retired. I can’t imagine having inherited buildings or a house there without someone watching it for me, I could never sell out my family history. And leave nothing if I have kids still.
Grew up and went to school I'm Magdalena haven't been back in years. Interesting watching your video and seeing how many of the building have changed in the last 9 years. Looks like they tried modernizing a lot of buildings and make it more touristy. A bunch of my family still lives there and my grandma was a running Queen for a long time for the old timers parade. Glad you enjoyed Magdalena and interesting to see it on RUclips.
Next time there is also a small little museum by the library that you could also check out. The Alamo reservation is a good mention as well because a lot of the navajos go to school and also live in Magdalena. A lot of the population in magazina is mostly Native Americans and they have a lot of history in the town and on the reservation. If you go up the street about 30 miles you'll reach the VLA the very large array, and that is always interesting to see as well.
I lived in this town and enjoyed every moment there. The people are nice and even tho one has to travel down the hill to shop at the bigger stores it still is a wonderful town. This is one of my favorite places to have lived in besides the one I live in now! Thank you for showcasing awesome town!
Why she gained the name Butter is exactly like Marty said; she learned the secret about butter, and they truly would just POP right out🙂Slick it up, cowgirl. Great explore! Spent many a day exploring the hills around there. Thanks!
Sally, another outstanding video. Scene y'all are in New Mexico, is there anyway you can go to Lincoln County, NM and cover the Lincoln County range war with Billy the Kid? Be safe on your journey, and keep up the great video's.
We cruised through Magdalena on our way to the Very Large Array. Love it but didn't spend more than a drive through it. We'll be going back to the area at the end of March and we'll be taking the time to look the place over more closely. Especially the cemetery....we are facinated by old cemeteries. Love your videos and have learn ALOT !
Just subbed, Really do enjoy your New Mexico travels. As a kid in the 70’s Magdalena was a pass through to get supplies in Socorro. My grandparents lived in Pie Town NM and enjoyed many summers there growing up as a kid. Thank you both for the fantastic content.
Another excellent video. Hope you and Marty are staying warm and healthy. Nice story line in the video, excellent narration. Your over 26K keep it going.
Hi Sally and Marty, love watching your channel and watching new and older vids you have made, you doing an awesome thing preserving our history and in such knowledgable and fun way
You missed a couple things. First, the Magdalena Airport. yes, they have an airport. About 7 miles west of town. Second, the blacksmith shop. The blacksmith is now the Mayor of Magdalena. He would have loved to meet you and tell you all about the place. But that might have taken a couple of days. Finally, the Magdalena Cafe. it is very good.
Also, thanks Sally for showing me more of my state. I live in Albuquerque, and have been over most of New Mexico, but the Southwest quadrant is the area I know the least about.
We went to Magdalena just to look around and stumbled into the blacksmith shop where the mayor gave us an impromptu demonstration of making an iron spike and had a friendly chat. Highway 60 is a beautiful drive, always take it when heading west to Arizona or California.
Another little tidbit of Magdalena is that the kids of Magdalena schools were bused to take part of the movie Contact being filmed at the VLA. At the end of the movie Jodie Foster explains to them about the VLA and how big the universe is. One of my favorite movies.
Rosedale is a ghost mining town in Socorro County near the northeast side of the San Mateo Mountains, about 30 miles south of Magdalena via NM 107 and FR 330. So, that is likely where the house came from. Thanks for another great video you guys! Hidden gems all over the place in those parts.🙂
Yep! I did a search, "Rosedale ghost town" The house did come from Rosedale. The "Verbo" website said it was moved approximately 20 miles from there. 🤠👍
Great detective work guys! Thanks for solving the mystery of the Rosedale Ghost House. I’m going to sleep easier tonight knowing it wasn’t really haunted 👻
What a lovely video. I live just west of Magdalena, near the airport. It seems you definitely were visiting at an off time--the village never looks so empty when we go in for the mail. Studio 605 is usually open in the mornings and serves espresso. They have a bunch of presses from antique to modern. It's too bad you didn't stop in the Blacksmith's shop and have a talk with the town mayor. I don't know who told you Mag had the first rodeo in the US, but they were mistaken. There are a number of rodeos that are older than Magdalena, two of the oldest being in Prescott and Payson, AZ. But, hey, it's still a fun story. Thanks for the entertaining video, and good luck in your travels!
Hey Sally and Marty, just wanted to say Hello. Sally I saw a video of yours from a year ago about a a diagnosis you had, I just wanted to let you know I hope you are doing better. I really enjoy the vidoes you and Marty produce, and I wanted to thank you both again. I wish you both nothing but the best in life. Take Care Sally, and for you Marty, its almost Spring, its March at long last.
Hi Sally, Hi Marty, I'm from Rosedale, Maryland and I don't recognize the house, so maybe it has a ghost named Rosedale. 🤪 2:40. Thanks for the tour of Magdelina! 🤠👍
@@SightseeingSally My interest was piqued enough to do a search, "Rosedale ghost town". The "Verbo" website said the house was moved approximately 20 miles from Rosedale, New Mexico to it's present location. So now I'm off to see what I can find out about Rosedale NM. 🤠👍
A Heidelberg is a printing press. That building may have been the town's news paper. Heidelbergs were commonly used in the early part of the last century but we're often sold to small job shops and small papers when larger newspapers either upgraded to photo offset presses or went out of business. It's probably reasonable that one would be in Magdolina. A Heidelberg was a significant improvement over what is called a platten press, which was the pressed you'd see in newspaper offices in the old western movies. The Heidelberg press printed at a greater volume then earlier Platten presses. Great video! Thanks!
Love all your videos but especially the New Mexico ones. I was born in Farmington, if your travels take you their maybe do alittle history although its kinda a big town. Suggestions: Durango and Mancos Colorado.
Another great video! And Marty is becoming like E F Hutton. He doesn't say much, but when he does, it's worth listening to! Keep up the wonderful videos!

Thanks for sharing the story of Grandma Butter, fascinating. She sounds like a woman who had a calling, and she answered it.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Like that town. We're searching for alternative property in NM for downsizing. Like Marty's straight forward comments, but I'm retired USAF.
The problem with Magdalena is water availability. The town well, which has always had slow production, has run dry as recently as last year. It took a couple of months to recharge.
