This is one of the most personal song for Tuomas (keyboard, composer) It was written after they fired Tarja. And what happened after that. A lot of fans got angry for fireing Tarja and they turned on him. The whole band was behind that decision but Tuomas took the blame. And he fell into a deep depression. Tuomas and Tarja where child-hood friends so they know each other very well. So he wrote this song as a suicide. Some people say he did it in the song so he would not do it in real life. But he has said that he never concidered suicide. If that's true or not I am not entiteled to say. But this is the resault of those events. A true masterpiece.

@@GOTGames In addition to that, when Emppu (the guitarist) goes to have some banter with Tuomas, there is some debate that he was actually making sure if Tuomas was okay, because, well, this song is very personal to him, as he's essentially turning his anguish and inner torment into music and letting it out to the world.
The song becomes very haunting in that sense, but also very beautiful, and luckily, Tuomas moved on - perhaps even thanks to performances such as this, so it's bittersweet.

This is absolutely the most personal song Nightwish has ever done. Regardless of who did what, it's a fact that Tuomas and Tarja were both heartbroken over how things turned out. I believe it took nearly 15 years before certain parties could bear to talk to each other again. Tuomas does not let this song be performed regularly. In this one his earphones were set to not pick up the vocals, and Marko and Emppu move to stand protectively near him. This song is one of the Big Three, along with Ghost Love Score and The Greatest Show On Earth.. The final section, Mother and Father were the actual words of Tuomas' parents when he was almost mad with despair..

@@GOTGames Many would have advised researching the background story before reacting to it, but equally as many would have dismissed this. When David Heretic reacted to it he had done some research and understood the song, but afterwards was reflecting on it and found he was concentrating more on the words than on the music. So there's definitely pros and cons to prior research in a first time reaction context. Great reaction mate. Greetings from a Nightwish Nut in Wales

That this song uses Edgar Allen Poe as a template is entirely justified in that it is a horror story in itself - an emotional horror story. The best depiction in art of depression escalating to suicidal thoughts I've ever seen. The battling voices within - pain, despair, anger at self, anger at the world, the sinister lyrics when Floor first slows it down (you might think awwww it's a lullaby - no, it's about death as a peaceful escape), betrayal. The coming storm, the chaos.
It's a terrifying piece of music that really resonates for anyone who has been there - I don't share anything like their history, of course. But I cannot make it past the pendulum dropping and the cry of "save me" without breaking.
What a harrowing experience. And what a relief Tuomas had supportive family, as well as a creative outlet to exorcise all these awful feelings he is describing to us in music. We could have lost him. It is such a relief when Floor sings the "mother" role (with Marko doubling as Father) to bring everyone safely back to shore and a rebirth "The Beginning". Without that coda this song would be too frightening.
As for Floor. I agree. Mesmerising. I don't know the words for it - but she seems to embody the music, physically channeling and expressing it with her posture, her hands and arms, her facial expression. You cannot help but just watch in fascination.
And no, your reactions are not boring. If we all wanted to see Poet we would just...watch Poet. I really like seeing people having an emotional response to the band I love.

I think in order to understand the band and it's fan base you have to know a bit about the band first, what drives it and the pure creative inspiration that is Nightwish. So, here's the skinny on what's been happening with Nightwish through the years, the decades. Floor is the third singer, believe it or not The Phantom of the Opera, the performance that you already reacted to, was Tarja's (the first singers) last performance before the band had to let her go in an open air letter because they were having trouble with getting into contact with her and her returning their calls. The reason being that she never really felt like this was her path. Originally, when Nightwish was formed it was going to be more of a classical based band. Tuomas, the keyboardist, writer, and composer of ALL their music, noting Tarja's operatic training brought her into the fold and basically formed the band around her voice. Being that they were all good friends and growing up together, it was very hard for them when she started to drift away, missing the practices and started making statements about leaving the band. Some credit her being influenced by her businessman husband Marcelo Cabuli, who was incidentally overheard on numerous occasions making statements that "Tarja was the face of Nightwish" and that she "could do much better without the band". Floor was actually the 'fill in' singer back when Tarja started missing the practices. Then they hired Anette (the second singer) and she was with them for a time until the whole debacle at the Denver concert when they all got seriously sick and she had to be rushed to the emergency room... then she broke her ankle in a fall when she was pregnant. At that point Anette just wanted to heal, have her baby and be close to home. So they moved Floor to the position of lead singer
This song, The Poet and The Pendulum, was written and wholly composed by Tuomas, was all about the dark time around when they had to ask Tarja to leave. Tuomas and the band suffered depression over their feelings of betrayal, especially Tuomas who was affected the most, to the very point that the band, family, and friends were worried about him committing suicide. You can see in The Poet and The Pendulum that it's his journey working through that depression, those dark times. The Poet and The Pendulum was Tuomas's written suicide, instead of doing the actual act. Note when you watch it, you'll see that there's a point in the song where the lyrics say, "Now I only have 3 minutes", well exactly 3 minutes later the Pendulum blade falls instigating Tuomas's death in the song. The very last words of the song are about forgiveness, love and making a fresh start, "In the end I will always love you....The beginning". So very very hauntingly beautiful.
Something too, the song is broken into five parts: I. The White Lands of Empathica, II. Home, III. The Pacific IV. Dark Passion Play V. Mother and Father. On the fifth part "Mother and Father" is the part in the song where Tuomas will have his "In-ear" turned off so that he won't hear the lyrics. Like ALL hard blows that people will experience at one time in their lives, they will return to that place where they most feel comfort, that one place where things are calm and not so crazy, for understanding and healing... Home. In this fifth part, "Mother and Father" these are the very words that Tuomas's mother said to him when he went home after the whole Tarja situation. It's a poignant moment out of time, a moment of understanding and unconditional love that a mother has at seeing her son in pain. It's also at this moment in the concert where you'll see that both Marco and Emppu both are over next to Tuomas, giving him emotional support by being there and with a wee "hey man, you alright." You can literally see the question being asked and Tuomas's response during the video.
Also you will notice that the drummer Jukka Nevalainen was replaced by Kai Hahto due to Jukka having debilitating insomnia. Jukka moved more to the managerial side of running the band. They've also added, by this point, a remarkable multi instrumentalist with Troy Donockley. As you by now well know there are many many songs where Marco (the bassist guitarist) and Floor harmonize beautifully both of their amazing vocal ranges a compliment to each other.
Tuomas (the keyboardist), other then doing the odd collaborations every now and then with other members of the band, writes not only ALL of Nightwish's lyrics, but writes the music for ALL the instruments, as well as writes ALL the orchestral music you will hear playing in the background of their songs. EVERYTHING, every masterpiece of Nightwish's comes out of that brilliant head of his. Which is why reactors across YT have coined Tuomas Holopainen as "The Metal Mozart" He is a complete musical genius and I'm a firm FIRM believer that he will go down as one of this generations greatest composers.
Also too highlighted for the fact that their Imaginaerum album goes hand and hand with the movie Imaginaerum by Nightwish: ruclips.net/video/qMhwh0-xcLo/видео.html which was filmed back with their second singer Anette Olzon was with the band. This movie is so very good, a complete visual and musical masterpiece. I do so hope you'll watch it.

really great synopsis ,however I should point out that this piece was "solely" about the state of mind in regards to the fans and media onslaught against Tuomas "afterwards" and not "all about the dark time around when they had to ask Tarja to leave" people tend to get confused about that saying this song is about the relationship or about the actual firing of Tarja,it's about what happened after and what he and the band had to contend with . also in interviews Tuomas has said that he never contemplated suicide or felt that way.

Floor was a fill in singer and then they moved her to lead singer when Annette left???? Did you just pull this stuff out of your ass? Floor was in Holland recuperating from burnout after traumatic experiences with the end of her band After Forever, and had nothing to do with Nightwish at that time. The call to come help the band band finish off their Americas tour, was setup over a few weeks or a month, but she certainly was not their “fill in” singer. Song suggestion is The Greatest Show On Earth Live at Tampere,Finland. Just jump in. Lyrics, your choice. 🤘🏼Also, watch the video to the very end for the full song.

Nightwish does this to everyone who doesnt know who they are, their style or their story. I was introduced to them by a friend in my later years at secondary school and I could never have anticipated the band parting ways the way they did. This song always makes me concerned for Tuomas when its performed as this song is so incredibly personal. Every song is a journey, every album a crusade.

awesome reaction. This piece has a very special place in my life. I know the back story but this piece is also an anthem for those people with mental health issues such as depression with suicidal thoughts, Yep I am one of those! Also in the Pit and the Pendulum Poe talks about the point at which you both give up hope and accept the end, which you really get the sense of in this.
If I may I would like to give you my interpretation of the lyrics and what they mean to me.
The first part, which you note starts with the words the end!! Is taken from Stephen Kings Tower series, the white lands were the home of a type of vampire that fed on emotions, (empathy), so a person left feeling nothing, empty and without emotion.
In the second part, those lines expressing a feeling of futility, all same old same old yet, hating how you feel, then the verse seems to express the effort of trying to pretend to be ok, hence those two faces, one for everyone else and the real one that is private, no one to turn to for help as the people around you seem as upset as you so no shoulder to cry on so you just carry on pretending becoming that whore for the cold world. Then there is the remembering back to when all was good, yet you cannot get there despite everyone telling you “you are ok, it will be fine” till those words just sink you even further into the mess.
Then we have the Pacific, oh wow, the wishing and planning stage, the beautiful sea, just wishing it was over, that you could be under the waves, beneath the pain tucked into that beauty., last goodnight kiss and a valentine that ends everything.
Then that part that starts with being afraid, being raped, not in the traditional sense but feeling violated, alone and bloody scared, For Tuomas, feeling that those who he felt should have been there for him somehow betrayed him, a not uncommon feeling with severe depression, feeling that even life betrayed you, also again the mention of the tide and drowning, many see it as the perfect death!
On a side note here, three minutes and counting, yep exactly three minutes to the point that Tuomas simulates the blade.
Here also note how the music becomes chaotic, mirroring the thought process of someone planning their own death, no logic, well there is but only to the individual. Yet also a sense of excitement and of a journey, proceeding the calm.
Then the passion play, traditionally passion plays were performed at Easter and were about the death of Christ, and Tuomas plays with us a little here, “second robber to the right of Christ! Well at the crucifixion there was only one robber either side of Christ but in the painting The Last Supper the person second to the right of Christ is Judas!!!!!
Then of course the symbolic death and the slowing faltering heartbeat.
The beginning or last part of the piece are the words that brought Tuomas back from the edge. In his case words from his parents but many of us will have people who were there at just the right time and who cared enough to be the rock and love us enough to hold on.
If there is a message in this work surely it is to be kind, to look out for each other and if you can be there, you never know you may just save a person’s life. As someone did mine.

Hi. Nightwish's oldest fan here (probably) Love your reviews. On this track the reason that the band members go over to Tuomas is to comfort him as this song is so personal to him.
I have a few suggestions I'd love you to review. First 3 feature Marco. 'The islander' from Ratina Stadium Tempere 2015 / While Your lips are still red from Wembley arena 2015 / High Hopes from The End Of An Era concert. If you want to listen to Anete Olzen, in my opinion 'Meadows Of Heaven' from Dark Passion Play is one of the best, ideally suited to her voice. There is a video to accompany it. Back to Wembley for 'My Walden'. I prefer this version due to Troy's introduction. He also sings on this one. For a Troy song try the lyric video for 'Harvest'. Another terrific lyric video is 'Tribal'. I challenge you to not do the skeleton dance while you're reviewing it. O e more for the best audience participation ever is from the Buenos Aires 2018 concert 'I Want My Tears Back'

I believe there are several female "metal" vocalists that can sing the "notes" that Floor can sing, but I've heard none that can not only sing the notes, but make you "FEEL" the emotions behind the words. Floor is magnificent in conveying all the confusion, pain and loss felt by Tuomas as he wrote this song. Major props to Tuomas for his genius and to Floor for her empathetic interpretation of his lyrics. And to both Marko and Emppu for hanging in there, helping Tuomas get through his pain; through many years right to this stage and this performance. Has Nightwish performed this song again since this concert? I think maybe not.

    Hello
The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is guilt for what happened, there is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen.
However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does.
The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly.

I love to sing along with this song...its super challenging with the long phrasing and breath control...but if I think about the words I'm singing, the story...I fucking lose it. The empathy in my heart chokes my voice.
I do hope you dive into a bit of research about this epic song...its a milestone in the pathos of the band. And then when you hear it again, the deep emotion will hit you...your chills will have chills! That suggestion being made, I enjoyed your reaction. You're very genuine!

This is a very dramatic and very personal song, Tuomas wrote it when he was extremely depressed and it affects him so much that he asked to cut the vocals from his audio. When you see his band mates getting close to him, when you think they are just staring at him, they are coming close to support him.
He has said he was so depressed he had to commit suicide in his song to avoid committing it in real life. The lyrics "The end. The song writer's dead", "I just wish the tide would catch me first and give me the death I longed for", "slain by the bell", etc. are all references to his own death.
When you are not familiar with the story of the song it might seem weird his team mates having close short exchanges with him, they are just providing support.

The reason why Emppu (the guitarist) goes to Tuomas (keyboard player\leader of NW) is actually to check on him, since this song was particularly tough for Tuomas to perform, you also see Marko (bass player) doing the same, they wanted to make sure Tuomas was okay, I surely believe someone else already explained the song's background and why is so haunting, sad, heart wrenching, yet heartwarming and beautiful within it's darkness, Floor and Marko did an outstanding job portraying Tuomas thoughts and feelings when he wrote the song

He commit suicide in this song so he didn’t have to do it in real life but what I love is to watch Marko and Empuu go up and check on him to make sure he’s OK. Are he says that quite often or when they would play the song he would have to disconnect from hearing the vocals because it would hurt him so much. If you re-watch the video you can see more telling signs especially when it comes to the point where he says I have three minutes left and counting and from that point on it is exactly 3 minutes until he makes the slashing across his throat to indicate he’s committed suicide

I agree that Nightwish should go down as one of the best Metal Bands Ever. I don't know what country you are in, but Nightwish is out on Tour right now and they are in the U.S. and they only have six dates for concerts here and they are not playing any large venues. I don't know why they aren't more popular here, it really is a crime they are not.

My top ten has been Pink Floyd, Yes, Rush, Tangerine Dream, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Heart, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden and Rainbow but there are a number of others who should be there too, such as Fleetwood Mac, Camel or The Electric Light Orchestra. I love Anette, but, although she was the first Nightwish singer to tackle Poet, only the arrival of Floor ,really performed this to Tuomas (and most others) satisfaction. Just see, as well as hear, the emotion coming from Floor. This is not a song. It is an epic tour de force of Tuomas emotion, from the end, death, of his friendship with Tarja, his group, and almost himself, through to beginning, a new start. I loved your rabbit in the headlights look at Pacific ( tears here are quite permissible), leading to your ‘comments’, yes being hit by Floor is overwhelming. Then Marco gets you. More goldfish impersonations at ‘mother and father’. Again, tears permitted from the most macho person, if they need them. I loved your reaction. The only problem is that, having reacted to Poet, nothing can ever match that in the future. Floor’s rendition of Tuomas lyric and the bands playing is first in a league of one. Quite unique.

I don't normally like the "metal" genre - but they are so, so much more than 'just' that.
Come to think on it, there is "rock opera" as performed by bands like Queen, so this is really better regarded as "metal opera"? 👍

I am loving your reactions, and Nightwish is phenomenal, and Floor's voice is perfection to me.

If you want to see just how far Floor can reach, listen Valley of the Queens where she sings with a couple of other great female vocalists. It is a short little song from one of Ayreon's rock operas.
