The ones from the 90s and 2000s were the best. I'm kind of disappointed that teen comedies went downhill right as I became a teenager. Teens in the 90s had these amazing movies that defined adolescence in that decade that they were teens in, like they were made for them. Once upon a time, things used to be funny because they were too ridiculous to take seriously. Then reality became satire and then it stopped being funny.
Totally agreed. What’s interesting is I’d argue there are still a lot of really incredible funny films being made, it’s just rarer to have them be a ‘pure comedy’. Feels like often comedy gets a little hidden in the mixing of genres: The Favourite The Nice Guys Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri I, Tonya Hunt for the Wilderpeople Vice Ingrid Goes West Sorry to Bother You Grand Budapest Hotel Jojo Rabbit More and more we see comedy get used to talk about serious / less inherently funny subjects as a sort of “should this even be funny?” provocation. Which is amazing (and obviously being able to find light in the darkness feels incredibly valuable right now) but I truly hope we haven’t entirely lost the days of great smart dumb pure comedies. Being invited to laugh and then finding yourself doing exactly that takes true filmmaking craft.
I agree, but Three Billboards isn't really a comedy at all to be honest. There's comedy in it but I would say less so than even the original Fargo. The three films in the 2010s that made me laugh the most were Get Out, Pain & Gain and Kung Fury. One is a horror/comedy, one is an action/comedy and the other is a shitpost which came from a kickstarter for a parody trailer on youtube to be made into an actual film. I love Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Ragnarok though and I'm kicking myself that I still haven't seen Jojo Rabbit.

I feel like theres a lack of new, mainstream original movies in general. The indie movie industry has been doing some interesting things but most indie movies seem to be dramas or documentaries, not comedies. Major movie studios just seem to be producing superhero movies and reboots/adaptations. Idk but doesnt seem sustainable
When you mentioned actors who became known for comedies of various decades I realized that the 2010s really didn’t create any big, popular comedy actors(there’s certainly a lot of comedy actors who became political activists, for better or worse in that decade, but I can’t recall a single movie or show that created the latest Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, Jack Black, Steve Carell, Betty White, Steve Martin, etc)
The 2000s was a golden age for comedy and I didn’t even know it. I miss talking about the latest film with friends after the first weekend, it really was a huge part of the culture
Facts, I remember everyone in my school going to Superbad the first night it came to theatres and everyone talking about it the next day literally all day. The movie impacted our LIVES how insane is that? And now people rarely say “hey have seen ____ movie” because they are so commonly forgettable. I just think Hollywood has become a very low quality money making business
@@maximo6037 would you say that for anything that's a "they don't make them like they used to anymore" type of thing? Like action sequences. Modern choppy editing and forcing wimpy actors into action roles are real things that have made fight scenes suck in most movies

I love that the director of Joker said that you can’t joke about anything anymore because of woke culture, and then Jojo Rabbit, a comedy about a young boy’s imaginary friendship with Hitler, gets nominated for Best Picture and wins Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars
making fun of nazis is like comedy 101 first class since the 40s, not sure what's so impressive about it, especially when it's in a movie with serious tone problems. But yeah, Todd Phillips didn't help himself at all with that stupid statement.
I miss old school comedies with a more innocent vibe like Home Alone, Sister Act, School of Rock and Groundhog Day. The 90’s was the golden age of comedy!
these movies are interesting because they have a pretense of realism around them. home alone and sister act have main plots with real stakes, which then get crammed full of ridiculous jokes. some other similar examples are my cousin vinny or clueless.
Trust me Nathan, if anyone’s gonna bring comedy movies back it’s director Taika Waititi. His best films are indie films are the funniest things to date, when studios let this guy make a blockbuster film it will be a classic comedy movie.
I don't know about him. I thought what we do in the shadows was hilarious, but jojo rabbit was pure "it's funny because it's shocking and politically incorrect" jokes, which in my opinion isn't that funny. Being 110% serious, there are few things in life that can compete with laughing so hard that you’re crying and wheezing in the movie theater long after the joke is over and now it’s extra funny because you’re in a giggle fit over how you can’t stop laughing and trying to stifle it as to not disturb others. 😂
It’s because comedy as a whole has shifted from being a movie thing to a series thing. It’s much more profitable (and IMO better) to make a comedy series such as The Office, Rick and Morty, etc.
There have been a few gems recently like "Dolemite is My Name", "Barb and Star" & "Borat 2" but those are few and far between. I really miss the days of Ted and The Hangover. Nowadays when I go to the theater it's always so empty unless it's a marvel movie.

“you can’t make jokes about anything anymore” feels like such a lazy excuse to me, Taika Waititi literally made a film about Nazi’s which was not only hilarious but sensitive and gut wrenching. In Swiss Army Man, Daniel Radcliffe plays a magical corpse... you can make a comedy about anything if you’re doing it right
you really hit the nail on the head. racist, misogynistic, whatever the heck comedians are mad that they cant find people who will laugh at their racist jokes now
It is! It's only blaming the audience for them not finding their stuff funny. There are a lot of movies from the 2000's and earlier that do a great job of making inoffensive gags. Those people have been coasting on bigotry for laughs. It's all just an excuse to not work on their craft and be _actually_ funny.
I'm so glad someone made this. I think our entire generation echoes your sentiment. My wife and I are re-watching a lot of our favorite comedies from the time and it's crazy that the well is so dry now.

2000s and decade before that were movie golden years for all movie genres. You had ballooning budgets, but not yet solidified corporate structures/control. Also CGI and effects had become amazing. This basically gave you just optimal mix for really good movies, before that you had a lot of creativity, but not abundance of money and technology to realize that creativity. After 2000s on other hand corporate started to snuff out creativity and decisions were made solely on basis of safe investments.
I feel like comedies now are so improvised that they are limiting themselves to just spoken jokes whereas something like Shaun of the dead shows is how much you can use visual comedy and not just people falling over and stuff but even like camera angles and scene transitions to make jokes
@@BassLineProductionsI Hot Fuzz - pretty amazing. That difficult balance between genuinely caring about the characters, yet piss taking the genre, and excellent photography and cast. Have you seen 'Lair of the white worm'? That's also excellent.

Kevin Hart's Night School was the worst movie theater experience I ever had in my life, you know when a movie is bad when you try to convince yourself the movie is funny and force yourself to laugh so you don't feel you wasted your money on a piece of crap.
I think the reason that movie didn't do well popularity wise is that it was such a good parody that people thought it was a genuine movie about an insufferable pop star, or just aren't used to seeing satire movies in theaters and missed the humor

@@Theomite so ur mad people dont do blackface anymore???
Totally agreed. What’s interesting is I’d argue there are still a lot of really incredible funny films being made, it’s just rarer to have them be a ‘pure comedy’. Feels like often comedy gets a little hidden in the mixing of genres:
The Favourite
The Nice Guys
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
I, Tonya
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
Vice
Ingrid Goes West
Sorry to Bother You
Grand Budapest Hotel
Jojo Rabbit
More and more we see comedy get used to talk about serious / less inherently funny subjects as a sort of “should this even be funny?” provocation. Which is amazing (and obviously being able to find light in the darkness feels incredibly valuable right now) but I truly hope we haven’t entirely lost the days of great smart dumb pure comedies. Being invited to laugh and then finding yourself doing exactly that takes true filmmaking craft.
The Favourite is a comedy through and through
Hot Shots and Hot Shots Part Deux are the best comedies.
I've never watched the movie but I know the premise and I didn't know that the three billboards had comedic elements that's intense
I love Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Ragnarok though and I'm kicking myself that I still haven't seen Jojo Rabbit.

a lot of these movies came out before I was born/a baby and I'm in high school haha
I know right?! Nothing like realizing your real age....
RUclips makes me feel so fucking old
I feel like theres a lack of new, mainstream original movies in general.
The most underrated comedies are the Pink Panther movies and some of Jackie Chan's action filmography. No one does action comedy like Jackie Chan.

making fun of nazis is like comedy 101 first class since the 40s, not sure what's so impressive about it, especially when it's in a movie with serious tone problems. But yeah, Todd Phillips didn't help himself at all with that stupid statement.
I miss old school comedies with a more innocent vibe like Home Alone, Sister Act, School of Rock and Groundhog Day. The 90’s was the golden age of comedy!
I never knew Groundhog day came out in 93 , I always thought the 80s. Yes all of those are top tier- well written comedies
these movies are interesting because they have a pretense of realism around them. home alone and sister act have main plots with real stakes, which then get crammed full of ridiculous jokes. some other similar examples are my cousin vinny or clueless.
School Of Rock came out in 2003, but that aside I agree. I'm a sucker for those kind of wholesome comedies.

I don't know about him. I thought what we do in the shadows was hilarious, but jojo rabbit was pure "it's funny because it's shocking and politically incorrect" jokes, which in my opinion isn't that funny. I wish I saw Superbad in theatres, but most laughs I've seen in a theatre was Harold and Kumar 2, that movie is so insane and funny.
Those were the days.
Being 110% serious, there are few things in life that can compete with laughing so hard that you’re crying and wheezing in the movie theater long after the joke is over and now it’s extra funny because you’re in a giggle fit over how you can’t stop laughing and trying to stifle it as to not disturb others. 😂
That is so few and far between now adaze, but I feel that!
it's like the fun meter is readin 11/10
You stifle your laughter when watching a comedy movie? I agree it's funny to do but only where it has to be silent like in a classroom or at work
It’s because comedy as a whole has shifted from being a movie thing to a series thing. It’s much more profitable (and IMO better) to make a comedy series such as The Office, Rick and Morty, etc.
There have been a few gems recently like "Dolemite is My Name", "Barb and Star" & "Borat 2" but those are few and far between.
