Nanook is the name of the cute polar bear baby, who was born at ZOOM Erlebniswelt Gelsenkirchen December 2017. Thanks to "Fotografie Markus Sobotka" we can show you these cute videos of the clumsy little polar bear baby and its mother.
In modern zoos and aquariums polar bears are important ambassadors for their endangered species and habitat. At the end of 2012, there were 330 zoo animals. 36 were in zoos of the VdZ and 35 of these animals were born in human care. The only wild caught animal had been taken from a circus husbandry.
The breeding of the animals in human care works well and the animals are older than in the wild. According to Zander & Kolter (1995), the rearing rate of the animals in the international studbook is 50%. In the wild, researchers are recording significantly higher mortality rates: up to 85%. The age reached in captivity is also significantly higher: on average, they zoo polar bears life twice as long.
Zoo opponents try to deny the improvements and successes of the polar bear husbandries in the past decades in order to convey a false image of polar bears in zoos. They do this within the framework of their ideology, which opposes all animal husbandry - from the polar bear to the family dog.
In reality, modern zoos and aquariums make important contributions to the conservation of these animals. For example, they enable research that would never be possible without them. They also invest a lot in education: the polar bears become ambassadors of a habitat that is severely endangered by climate change. The contribution that modern zoos and aquariums make to conservation is very important.

Werde Eisbären nicht oft als Zwillinge geboren?

Zwillingsgeburten sind bei Eisbären definitiv nicht selten, aber ein Wurf besteht aus einem bis maximal (und äußerst selten) vier Jungen. In Gelsenkirchen waren es ja bekanntlich drei Jungtiere von denen eines überlebt hat wie es auch in der Wildbahn nicht selten geschieht. Wie im Video beschrieben ist die Mortalitätsrate von Jungtieren bei Eisbären ja leider sehr hoch - im Zoo liegt sie bei 50%, in der Wildbahn bei 85%.
