At ZOOM Adventure World Gelsenkirchen, 3 hippos are important ambassadors for endangered species. We talked to animal keeper Klaus Mette in the Adventure World Africa of the German Zoo.
Hippos (Hippopotamus amphibius) are listed as VU by the IUCN. Their presence in zoos is enormously important. At ZOOM Erlebniswelt Gelsenkirchen you can also observe the animals from land and water, which makes the husbandry even more special.
In former times they were also called 'Nile Horses' in Germany because they discovered the first specimens there. The reason why people today speak of hippos is that the animals on the Nile are no longer found. But that was not their most northern distribution area - around 120,000 years ago, hippos were also distributed along the Rhine and Thames rivers.
Today they are only distributed in sub-Saharan Africa. This is due to a change in the climatic conditions, which are constantly changing, but also in the influence of humans on nature. Today, the hippos are fragmented into many populations and need protection.
Modern zoos and aquariums work on this worldwide. The aim is to protect the habitats of the animals, but also to avoid animal-human conflicts because the hippos are quite defensive. In nature, they are not to be joked with, but at the zoo, they can build great relationships with the caretakers.
Klaus Mette also shows this to us in the video when he brings them food and interacts with them. At the zoo, these animals can reach an age that is unfortunately usually not granted in nature. Here they are protected and can live a life of luxury.
ZOOM Erlebniswelt Gelsenkirchen also keeps the animals together with other animals of different species - it works well, as the experienced animal keeper explains in the video. So is always something going on in the installation, because of course, the heavy hippos are quite comfortable.

Das werden wir sehen. Das Männchen ist ja schon sehr alt, weshalb es wahrscheinlich schwer ist, dies voraus zu sagen.
