- The two spectacled bear cubs at Duisburg Zoo play hilariously on the installations and make their first experiences under the supervision of mother Huanca and the caretakers. We talked with the chief of the department, Mike Kirschner, about the two cute bears.
In their homeland, the spectacled bears are threatened. Modern zoos and aquariums support the conservation of this amazing bears and therefore promote species conservation, research and education on this particular species. A few years agoDuisburg Zoo opened a new, natural facility and now celebrates the second breeding success in a row.
Duisburg's spectacled bear twins were born on Christmas last year and are still a bit clumsy. That's why you can see them with their mother in a specially designed enclosure. As soon as they have completed the "bear primary school" they will play on the bigger installation, so that they can grow accustomed to it without danger. Only when they are completely safe their father Pablo will join them.
All this worked out perfectly with the last cub and he could now be successfully transferred to another zoo to found his own family, as is normal for the bears. This successful breed is enormously important in order to preserve the species and protect it.
Duisburg Zoo is one of six zoos in Germany that has this special species in its care. It is the only bear species in South America and the last remaining species from the subfamily of short-faced bears.

Also wir selbst züchten sie ja nicht, sondern die modernen zoologischen Einrichtungen, aber wir schließen und deinem Lob natürlich gerne an. 😊
Isen't that dangerous to put Pablo with the offspring (especially iff they are boys)
Because in my homezoo (ZOO Antwerpen in Belgium) we had also a cub in 2013 (his name is Oberon and is now at Port Lympe in the UK) and it's was a no go to put the dad together with his son. Oberon only met his father Gladstone with a fence between them. So i am a bit suprised that Duisburg is gonna put Pablo together with Huanca and his offspring.
PS we also have a new bear cub in Antwerp since 16/02/2017. The sex is currently unknown.
Kito was a boy, too, and there was no problems with mom, dad and child on the same installation. Of course, when the males get older, it's better to move them to another facility, but at a young age there was never a problem. 🙂

It could be, that Pablo is less dangerous, but we don't know it for sure, because we don't know Gladstone.

Lassen sich kleinere Bärenarten, wie der Brillenbär und der Malaienbär als Haustiere halten?
Nein. Für die Haustierhaltung, sprich die Haltung im Haus durch Laien, sind Bären nicht geeignet. Sie brauchen die professionelle Pflege und zudem sollten sie Teil eines Erhaltungszuchtprogramms sein.
zoos.media wenn ich wilde Tiere halten würde, würde es hauptsächlich meinem eigenen Vergnügen dienen.
Dann ist es ja gut, dass Sie keine der Arten halten dürfen, weil bei der Haltung dieser Arten musst Artenschutz, Edukation und Forschung im Vordergrund stehen wie es das in modernen zoologischen Einrichtungen auch tut.
+zoos.media es gibt haufenweise Personen, welche wilde Tiere als Haustiere halten, ohne sie zu einem höheren Zweck zu verwenden. Wenn ich das Geld hätte, würde ich mir einen Big Tusker-Elefanten beschaffen. Mitsamt Anlage.
@@kotorandcorvid4968 blöd nur das Elefanten in Gruppen leben sollten und es sehr viel Kompetenz braucht um diese Tiere zu halten, die haben sie nicht. Unmöglich solche Kommentare
