I bought this album as an 8-track when it first came out. I was 15. I wore out that 8-track, along with the two after that, as well as three cassette versions. It was my first CD purchase when CDs arrived, and now I have it both in my cloud and in my favorites on Spotify.
Even when I now have my grandchildren in the car and listen to it I am transported back to my 15 year old self, feeling again all of the teenage angst and dreams which this album captured. And I’m okay with that.

I was lost 'til you were found
And I never knew how far down I was falling
    Before I reached the bottom
I was cold and you were fire
And I never knew how the pyre could be burning
On the edge of the ice field
And now the chilly California wind
Is blowing down our bodies again
    And we're sinking
Deeper and deeper in the chilly California sand
Oh, I know you belong inside my aching heart
And can't you see my faded Levis bursting apart
And don't you here me crying, "Oh, babe, don't go"?
And don't you hear me screaming
    "How was I to know?"
I'm in the middle of nowhere
Near the end of the line
But there's a border to somewhere waiting
And there's a tankful of time
Oh, give me just another moment
To see the light of the day
And take me to another land where
    I don't have to stay
And I'm gonna need somebody to make me feel like you do
And I will receive somebody with open arms, open eyes
Open up the sky, let the planet that I love shine through
For crying out loud, you know I love you
For crying out loud, you know I love you
For crying out loud, you know I love you
I was damned and you were saved
And I never knew how enslaved I was kneeling
In the chains of my master
I could laugh oh but you could cry
And I never knew just how high I was flying
Ah, with you right above me
And now the chilly California wind
Is blowing down our bodies again
    And we're sinking
Deeper and deeper in the chilly California sand
Oh, I know you belong inside my aching heart
And can't you see my faded Levis bursting apart

Oh for crying out loud, you know I love you
For crying out loud, you know I love you
For taking in the rain when I'm feeling so dry
For giving me the answers when I'm asking you why
And my oh my, for that I thank you
For taking in the sun when I'm feeling so cold
For giving me a child when my body is old
And don't you know for that I need you
For coming to my room when you know I'm alone
For finding me a highway, for driving me home
And you gotta know for that I serve you
For pulling me away when I'm starting to fall
For revving me up when I'm starting to stall
And all in all for that I want you
For taking and for giving and for playing the game
For praying for my future in the days that remain
Oh Lord, for that I hold you
    Oh, but most of all
For crying out loud for that I love you
    Woah, but most of all
For crying out loud for that I love you
    Woh, but most of all
For crying out loud for that I love you

    You know I love you

Great reaction! Thank you for checking out this incredible but rarely-reacted to track. Meat certainly did put 200% into every performance. Jim Steinman said that, although it doesn't show up on film, the amount of steam that would be coming up from Meat's body when he was on stage was like the steam coming up out of the New York subway system, he'd just be generating that much heat.
I was lucky to see him in concert eight times, and each time was a two-and-a-half hour, non-stop, epic emotional rollercoaster that left me physically and mentally drained. At time time I was in my mid-teens to mid-twenties, he was mid-fifties to mid-sixties, and I'd need a week to recover from one concert!

Musically, thi s song is superior to so many of the 70's and 80's love ballads that cam afterwards. Such an opera like oerformance by Meatloaf and such wonderful musical backup! A true wonder of rock that I will always enjoy!!!!

there is no video version of this one. There is an live version from 2012 , but already then his voice wasn't up for this song. And as he said in the performance, last time he sung it live was 1979 or something like that. Because it demands so much of his voice and energy. So it drained him...And this is the best version so far...And he crashed after nearly all his live performances.

Jim Steinman was the modern time Wagner and luckily found Meat to express his songs to the whole world.
Their combination was just pure art! When it comes to the vocal skills, I have never seen a cover which comes even close to Meat. Hands he was by far the best rock opera singer of all time.

Jim Steinman frequently referred to Meat as "his Vivaldi". That's pretty high praise from one musician to another

The album begins with Bat Out of Hell. A song about escaping. very fast and crazily, without any pause with great intensity.
For crying out loud (the final song the last song on the album), he’s beaten down, he’s crawling back to her.
Like Bruce Springsteen sang in Cautious Man, a song about doubt and wanting to leave leave it all behind. He’s in bed next to his sleeping wife:
He got dressed in the moonlight and down to the highway he strode
When he got there he didn't find nothing but road

Harri, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Meat Loaf passed away, Jan 20, 2022, of Covid 19 complications. He was 74 at the time. He had been in poor health since about 2003, suffering from Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, asthma, a Spinal fusion, and many other health issues. Despite requiring a cane and wheelchair for mobility, he continued to perform. In 2019, he fell off a stage, and broke his clavicle. He retired soon afterwards, as his body just could not take any more punishment.
