This series has been perfectly timed for me. My 79 300CD has been overheating, been loving this case study format of diagnosing and fixing the problem for a specific car. Thanks a ton Kent, Invaluable to the Mercedes community.
I am in the middle of a rolling restoration on my 83 300cd. It great to keep driving while doing it. Sure there is some downtime here and there, like injector rebuilds, etc. but that is only a few days. Keep up the motivation!
Really enjoy the videos! Watching these types of channels have given me the info and courage to start wrenching on my 2003 ML500, now with 260K miles and going strong. Very satisfying to do the work yourself, and know that it got done right with good parts.
I have followed this series from the start . it's great news that "Old Spence" will live for years to come. As for using modern diesel fuel in a car that was desighned for the older diesel that had aditives added. with my own 4x4 ( 95 Mitusbishi pajero 2.8 Lt diesel engine ) every time i fill up with fuel i add 200 Mls of 2 stroke oil into the tank and i think that this has helped with the seals in the injector pump lasting so long. But last year i had the injector pump rebuilt along with new injectors replaced at the same time. My pajero now has 278,000 Kms and 28 years old now. Iwas also tols buy the company that did the work, that the pump and injectors had not been touched from new. I realy injoyed your work that was done to old spence. Please keep up the good work.🙂
Had me worried in the beginning there, Kent!😂 I'm glad you are saving it, we need to keep as many as possible on the road, they're not making any more of them!
Wonderfull, like your methodology in reviving these cars. Wanted to see all the old parts that you replaced on 'Ol Spence, and a rough figure of how much was spent on new parts so far. This will get viewers an isea of what it takes to get these lovely cars back on the road.
@@Mercedessource I just figured you took the puppy in and now you can't bear to part with it. Looking forward to whatever comes down the pike with this one. I really kinda like it!
Thank you so much for this series. I'm having the same problem. Working on water pump now. Just finished the motor mounts. (Thanks for the thread cleaner and bolts) Your a Boulder among rocks !!!!! Mark
Very fun and educational series. Lot of things that apply also to other German cars. The overheating issue was a multiplied issue and glad you got it fixed.
I agree with your philosophy. These cars are great if you get the right one. Also, almost any car is worth more in parts than the total car. So that is why you need buy the correct car to save. Thank you Kent.
I'm happy to see the overheating issue has been fixed. However I would citric acid or apple cidar vinegar flush the cooling system as the icing on the cake to make sure you are working with a cooling system that is at 100% Im happy to see such a high mileage engine got a second chance at life. And I would love to see an entire video dedicated on correcting the paint and shining up the trim on this car
The answer is most likely, but I have never done it.The reason I say that is you will need a lot of the parts to pull off the right-hand drive engine and car to put on the left hand engine.
Great video series, Kent. Quick question for you on the W126, would you recommend a 350 SDL or a 560 SEL? I want to get a comfortable car for travel and to drive to work daily. I am not really concerned about fuel economy. Thanks for your recommendation.
What you recommend to me about 1985 mercedes benz 300 SD I bought 1991 mercedes benz 560 sel but the reverse take time to respond any recommendations to do
I have an almost exact copy of old Spence! Mine blows smoke badly while running. The oil pan gasket leaks, as does the rear end gasket. It only has 220k miles on it, but has other problems. Where do you recommend that I start in getting it back on the road? Thanks!
Watch the full series on Old Spence and do what I did. Start with the engine by doing a valve adjustment and compression test. Next go to fuel injectors and reaming glow plug holes. Solve the smoking problem before you do other things.
We look forward your new videos!!! Thanks so much!! Mine is exactly the same, but atmospheric. The only thing I do not reach to solve is a entire car vibractión when going in 3rd ot 4th gear at low rmp. Could it be gearbox/differential mounts?
Difficult to say from afar but from what you are saying I would suspect the drive shaft flex disks or center bearing carrier or universal joint. Google the subject to learn more.
300 d. I have a fair amount of smoke coming out of the oil fill hole, when cap is off. The cap rattles a bit, but definitlely doesn't blow off. Is that good, or a sign of a bad engine? 180k miles
Hurrah! Rolling restorations are certainly the most fun. You get to fall in love with your car over and over again as the project advances.

No spoilers but... man that was brutal! Excellent series Kent
Sorry! :-)
Whenever I see a new upload, I drop EVERYTHING and watch. Thanks Kent, from BC Canada
Be careful, don't "drop" your tools if you have the valve cover off.

Thanks for the video series Kent! You’re our hero. We live for these videos. Good job solving all the issues on it 🙌. Happy wrenching
Glad to see you will continue to work on Old Spence.
I wish I had your knowledge and passion for these old cars.
Had us going Kent! So nice to see you still sorting out these old diesels. That’s 1/2 the fun. Thanks!

Funny how this went from a "let's just get it running and maybe sell it" to a "let's do a rolling restoration". I didn't think you were keeping it!
I decided to keep it due to current events. I will explain more in a future video.

heck YEAH....looking forward to coming episodes !!!
Really enjoyed this series … would love to find such a car here in the UK. Looking forward to seeing Old Spence restored to his former glory!

Outstanding series Kent!!!!...
Never give up, never surrender. ❤
Great car and good decision Kent. I am proud of the work you did on this beauty.
Mercedes Source messing with my mind again
Excellent! Good to see the overheating problem was solved and this W123 will be saved. Too good car to be parted out.
Beautiful! I love to see it Kent! My 74’ 450SL only overheats sitting in traffic too long.
Have you considered a weak fan clutch. mercedessource.com/store/1972-1980-45-450-engine-fan-clutch-replacement-kit

Great video, as always. Looks like the steering has some play, is that a safety issue?
Great series. Great job. 👏👏
Glad you enjoy it!
Nice video serie Kent!
Restoring sounds like a good idea to me - but then I do appreciate the older cars.
Is it possible to put a om617 turbo engine of left hand drive to right hand drive??

560, those 350s had head warping issues among other things.
Fantastic series with car save and improve that is what it's all about 😊

wow you got me there at the beginning :D
Enjoyed!!!
There is one for sale in my town. He is asking $12,900 for it.

That is normal and expected at that mileage and age. Better health indicators come from doing a compression test and monitoring oil consumption.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I consider myself to be a rolling restoration
😎👍
i think if you are a true mb enthusiast the words part it out do not creep into your vocabulary.
Just kidding! 😂
I am watching your Videos from Germany and i just can say Thanks a lot! Especially for the Turbodiesel content!!! Very good job!🫡😊
Thanks for the kind words.
