That was pretty fascinating, Aaron. Having grown up as a kid in the early sixties, I'm struck by how sophisticated the music had become. Changing all the time. We were damn lucky.

Nice voice Aaron, it’s a tough song to sing well. I was never Beach Boys fan but can surely appreciate their great harmonies and the work it took to get it down on vinyl back in their heyday.

That guitar is like one my sister had that I was going to learn to play on. I had a guitarist at a music store in St. Louis Park fix it for me and when I went back to get it, I was in tears because my mother had told me she didn’t want me taking guitar lessons. I was devastated by how mean she had been about it, it had been unexpected. She overheard me talking about it to my sister and just went on the attack. She didn’t think I could handle guitar and college at the same time and she didn’t want to listen to me learning in the house. I was very vulnerable at the time, I had been experience crying spells due to depression , so I believed her that I might not be able to handle learning guitar and devastated that she didn’t want me to do something so beautiful as learn an instrument. It so would have helped me with my depression I didn’t know how to escape my ruminating mind and it would have been so good for that, I am so absorbed in learning how to play now finally and it is definitely an escape I always needed. That guitar really looks like the one I left behind at the music store. I think I was supposed to go back and get it, but I was too embarrassed to do so and afraid of my Mom getting mad again. My sister tried to pick it up, but he would not let her because I think he wanted me to comeback. I felt to much shame to go back and some other confusing stuff happened between me and my sister over the guitar which made me feel even more reluctant to go back, so I am pretty sure he ended up with the guitar. I am sure he just wanted to talk me back into lessons when I went to pick it up, but I don’t think I understood that from what my sister said. I just couldn’t face him because it was going to be so obvious I was giving up a dream. I had been very excited about starting guitar lessons, I had actually dared to dream. The guitar teacher knew that and I could not face that he knew it and how sad my Mom had made me feel and I would have had to still say I can’t take guitar lessons right now because she had freaked me out so bad. This guitar looks exactly like that guitar and God does know where I have been without it, through hell. This was one of the pivotal points in my life that could have saved me in ways I will never know now. If a guitar has it own face this is definitely that guitars twin at the very least. Good thing is I picked up a guitar last year and I am taking lessons finally. It is rough going but I have stuck with it while grieving the lost of the solace I could have experienced so much sooner and the directions it would have given me the confidence to go in when they appeared represented by at least three people that would be in my life right now. Oh well, I am learning to play now and I am glad to see such a beautiful song being played on this sweet guitar, so like the one that once was going to be mine. It’s the perfect guitar for this song right now. God Bless! I have tears in my eyes but at least my new guitar is waiting for me to continue learning and life goes on. I hope it is not to late to let it take me places, at the very least God let it sooth my soul. Amen. My name then was Susann McElderry, now it is Susann Dye.

I can't help but be curious - how did college work out for you? For myself, I took up gtr when I was 13 and hands down, it was likely the best decision I ever made. I was already a lifelong fan of music since about 10 and would have loved to have begun learning earlier but spent much of my 13/14th year learning to get my hands around the gtr and bass and loved it. I ended up doing a music edn degree with a gtr as a second study ( classical) but my heart was always in op/rock/folk. My interest in gtr ended up leading to a tertiary education, a meal ticket, a decade long flirtation with a semi-professional recording/ performing career and best of all, a lifelong appreciation for songwriting and the gtr in all its forms - a life-changing meeting with an instrument that has enriched my life beyond telling.

@@ianbartle456 Hi, I appreciate your interest. I think guitar would have lead me to some very interesting discoveries like yours did. At a minimum it would have at least been soothing to play and perhaps compose my own songs, etc. Anyway, I went with my other passion eventually Art in college, so I got a B.A. in Art Studio and a B.S. in Art Education from the U of M here in Minnesota. I still think guitar and music would have been better for me because I express myself better with lyrics and I have always been making up lyrics sing out loud to myself when people are not around. Being introverted made teaching as a meal ticket/career hard for me, so I had to give it up. I have since been trapped in office work as an alternative, but they felt dead end and unsatisfying jobs. So I wish I had tried music again sooner as an outlet/self expression, but I distracted myself with horses instead because my sisters got into them and of course I like them too. Now I have bought a guitar and I am trying to learn it, so at last the side I have had to repress can come out and be happy. Thanks again.

I just got into learning this amazing song, and yours is the first video I clicked on. So glad I did! Thank you! Great explanation, and while your playing is damn good, your voice really surprised me! Usually people teaching guitar kinda mumble to get the gist of the song across, but while the lesson is all good, your voice really was the star of the show here!

That F#m6 certainly fits nicely, but if you listen closely to the recording the bass note flips up to an A and its played under a B major triad, making that a B/A chord. And that sets sets off a lovely ascending chord sequence of B/A. E/B, Cdim

Paul had a lot of help and according to Paul Simon Sir Paul’s music did not all come naturally.Sir Paul says he cannot read music? Remember who the real 5th Beatle was George Martin Classically trained sitting right next to him. No doubt Sir Paul’s ideas were there but carrying them out was another matter.Brian Wilson never made that claim that it came totally naturally. He studied music theory like Burt Bacharach another genius well schooled in music theory. On the basis of reasoning I think we know who is being upfront on this matter.

the thing is A beautiful song is a beautiful song. No matter what chords are used. If its beautiful it is beautiful. Both HTAE and GOK are fantastic songs. GOK with its traditional jazzy chords and HTAE's brilliantly constructed melody over two different key signatures which is G on the verses and Bb on the chorus.

I hardly understand why you, and some other great songwriters find God only knows the greatest song of all time.
Yes it’s a good song but, imho, there are plenty of songs by far more beautiful in all vocal and technical aspects you mentionned.
You have quoted Maca, the Beatles have many stratospheric songs (Because, Here there and everywhere, Something, ….), the Eagles are not bad too (Hotel California, Lying eyes, New kid in town, …) and in the Beach Boys repertory (Don’t worry baby) are top and better songs.
Actually what is specific to God only knows is that, unlike the songs already mentionned, this song didn’t receive immediately a worldwide respect. It took a long time to be recognized, and with the help of famous stars.

Every great song written by various writers/lyricists probably has some argument for being a great or even the “greatest” song ever written. As the saying goes “opinions are like
A s _ h o l e s, everybody has one.” So when we look at every song ever written, needless to say, that’s an awful lot of songs we’re talking about to put into the mix which, in the end, is simply someone’s opinion in regard to which is the absolute greatest song ever written throughout time. So in essence no one opinion is the deciding factor and is only an opinion of a few people and truly means absolutely nothing. I myself being a musician and lover of music, I could throw in my own opinion as to which song I feel is the greatest, but to others I’m sure it would mean nothing. THERE YOU HAVE IT; MANY WORDS THAT DON’T MEAN ONE DAMN THING. 😳🤔😇🇺🇸🇺🇦So, no matter what other people are saying about you or making judgments about your music, don’t worry about it! It’s simply just another opinion that means nothing your own.

The expression, "God only knows" is common and colloiquial and quite far removed from religion. It's like "the devil is in the details" which is no more a referece to Satan. The song is a beautiful expression of love and friendship, and so for religious conservatives to make a stink about it means those people have too much time and too few things to complain about. The chords and melody are so excellent and Brian uses them to craft one of the best pop tunes of the 60s.

Looking at those fingering contortions, I have to wonder if this song was written on a guitar. Would be so much easier to play those chords on a keyboard.
