  • Author of the gothic horror Frankenstein, Mary Shelley had massive influence in the sci-fi, gothic, and Romantic-era genres.
From largely creating the sympathetic trope of the thinking, feeling monster in Frankenstein to effectively conveying the complexities of the feminine social role in late Georgian-period England with Falkner, Lodore, and Mathilda, Shelley lived to be one of the last Romantic writers producing rich and imaginative stories well past the peak of Romanticism.

I just discovered your channel and I already love it. One of my favourite literary history stories is Lord Byron, Mary Shelley and all the rest telling each other ghost stories that night. This is exactly the type of content I come to youtube for ❤️

Thank you! I really appreciate your kind comments and I hope you do enjoy my other videos. Romantic-era writers were all so interesting especially when we examine their influences and what they've later influenced in return!

Mary Shelley is my relative. They’ve change the spelling of our last names since then, but my fathers professor in college did the lineage in the 60s

These are definitely tough times and many are feeling pretty isolated lately, I know I have! Lately, I've been trying to balance between work and making these videos as a passion project, sometimes it's tough but it's also rewarding!

Awesome editing and essay as always! (this is pretty off topic, but anyways) The creation of Frankenstein's monster reminds me when a parent notices their child is a psychopath or has a similar behavior. And since I want to be a father, I always ask myself about this "what if": what if my child becomes a monster and makes people suffer? I made that person, is it my responsibility? What if my child is a "monster", but not one that hurts people but one who suffers? I think this kind of questioning is one of the things that drives so much people to not have children. The ethical implications of bringing someone to this world are gigantic, and I keep trying to find the best answer to this problem. I don't want to be Frankenstein.

I think having empathetic and caring parents definitely helps and the fact that you worry about these things means that you probably don't have to worry so much, haha! It's a strange contradiction where the fact that you do worry means you'll probably be a caring father and therefore don't have to worry as much.
Anyways, I know I had a video about utilitarianism and trying to consider the best course of action at all times - but in personal life, it sometimes places too much weight on us and paralyzes us to consider all the possibilities where things can go awry. We also have to consider that our children can grow to be loving, happy, and generous people :)

@@Litburo You're right, I think I forget about the happy possibilities sometimes. By the way, I especially like how your content has found a pattern. I could watch a video with other narrator or just read the essay and I would probably notice you made it. I hope you're enjoying the process :)
