I thought well done. WKW is tough to describe - but I tell people it is like a soap opera and jumping between stories or settings. Chunking Express was a nice introduction because it is only two stories largely set (there is some intentional overlay via cameo clip inserts) "story one" and then "story two". The step photography - the best way I image it is to fix the camera so that anything not moving is fixed .. then you film two separate actions - usually people - and then overlay that fix - think of it like a stage or room with one "action" running faster than normal speed, and the other you run slower than normal speed. It make the slow stand out like an eternity more, which the fast is gone so fast it cannot become a memory really.

I’m really interested in reading this author, but I know on the other channels the comments were, “I always read him when I’m depressed.” There were a lot of comments like that, and it barely made me leery of my time. But great video.

So far this year I’ve read Killing Commendatore, Kafka on The Shore, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Hard-Boiled Wonderland, and Men without Women. Now I’m on South of the Border, West of the Sun. I’ve become entirely dedicated to finishing all of Murakami’s fiction books by the end of this year (12 left). My favorite part is going to the store to buy the next one. I don’t choose based on chronology, or any sort of logic. I just let my intuition decide - very fitting for Murakami, I think

Your break down of this piece is insightful. Especially showcasing the different filming styles. I’m a big fan of John Woo but I feel like Wong Kar-Wai is more experimental or instrumental working with less. It’s like when a director has a lot of resources, it seems overwhelming and the focus is lost with too many unnecessary special effects, I don’t know?

If you’re going to make a video about a writer, you might want to make doubly sure that your captions are correct too. “Alot” is not a word. “A lot” written as two words, is correct. No one expects you to re-edit the video, but for future reference, “a lot” is grammatically correct. Hope that helps you! 🙂👍🏻

I used to not enjoy reading books unless they were history books or educational in some way, I’m the kind of guy who can’t imagine the image of an apple in his head so most descriptions felt very vague and unfamiliar to me so I could never relate enough to devour books. Later in life a friend recommended Murakami, Norwegian Wood to be precise, and his descriptions were so precise yet simple that I could imagine them, his love for music in all his books is also something I can relate to but above all what I really love is how he writes characters, what they go through and how they develop, the simples joys in life, love and how destructive life can be. I’ve since read a bunch of his books and his short stories and I love every single one of them (except maybe Sputnik Sweetheart, that one was enjoyable but not a favorite). With Murakami I feel like I’m reading something that happened in real life even when it gets so silly like a man who can talk to cats and summons fish from the sky. My personal favorite is Men without Women, to this day it remains the most powerful bunch of short stories I’ve ever read and they’ve left a deep mark in me.

Favorite film of all time right here, nobody captures a slice of life picture like the master Wong kar wai.

I'm not a native English speaker and I enjoyed reading Haruki short stories. Simple words, entertaining and open my eyes to many thing and let me feel like I belong to his stories because they represent many of us lives. I finally found my favorite author ❤

I'm a big murakami fan , the first book I've read was Kafka on the shore and the experience I had while reading that book was surreal , I felt like I was experience everything Kafka taimura was going through , the library , the cottage in the woods , the forest every thing and ofcourse Nakata was my favourite .. then I've real Norwegian woods idk why it's so hyped the writing is 100/10 murakami way of writing is something else like psychedelic but the story was okay Midori is my favourite character in Norwegian woods and now I'm currently on the wind up bird chronicle and I can't explain what it's impact on me going through a worst phase of my life and this is the only book that keeping me through this phase .. for me murakami books are psychedelic without taking any psychedelic my mind is alter and my heart feels beauty of every day life

I learned so much from this. The city really is a character in the movie and such an integral part of it. I just finished my first video essay on Chungking Express and am now watching others to see the different interpretations of the movie. So neat!

Okay I'm commenting due to what I heard in the middle of this just before you went through The Double; actually I randomly came back to this video later and apparently I was halfway through it because it restarted in the middle; ironically I'm also halfway through Crime and Punishment with my dad; I guess I wish I had someone to kick the soccer ball around with or hang out with; having a girlfriend is hoping for way too much isn't it? So wonderfully put. I needed this video essay as I was feeling frustrated and confused after having watched CE just now. I realise now I sat through a piece of cinematic excellence with abstract and subtle undertones. Not every film has to have a linear plot. Sometimes there's a story in every scene. Definitely a film that needs lots of rewatches.

This video is hard to watch, I mean understanding all it's hard but not being a English speaker make this 10x more difficult, all the meaning of the video make me wander and I can't concentrate 100%, the video being 20 min long doesn't help, one time the talk is about Dotoesviky or wathever is his name, and other time is about a film of doublegangers, like bro... You need to fix the subtitles. Especially to get Wong Kar-Wai's name right - there was not a single time it got right. His name was done as 'wonka white' to 'wonky y' - seriously man, I don't know if I should laugh or cry.
