Mental. I watched this movie the other night and loved it and just realized I have actually lived in the Chungking Mansion in 2018 on a long weekend. Crazy how the world works. Loved this film, now I love it even more.
I learned so much from this. The city really is a character in the movie and such an integral part of it. I just finished my first video essay on Chungking Express and am now watching others to see the different interpretations of the movie. So neat!
So wonderfully put. I needed this video essay as I was feeling frustrated and confused after having watched CE just now. I realise now I sat through a piece of cinematic excellence with abstract and subtle undertones. Not every film has to have a linear plot. Sometimes there's a story in every scene. Definitely a film that needs lots of rewatches.
Your break down of this piece is insightful. Especially showcasing the different filming styles. I’m a big fan of John Woo but I feel like Wong Kar-Wai is more experimental or instrumental working with less. It’s like when a director has a lot of resources, it seems overwhelming and the focus is lost with too many unnecessary special effects, I don’t know?
I thought well done. WKW is tough to describe - but I tell people it is like a soap opera and jumping between stories or settings. Chunking Express was a nice introduction because it is only two stories largely set (there is some intentional overlay via cameo clip inserts) "story one" and then "story two". The step photography - the best way I image it is to fix the camera so that anything not moving is fixed .. then you film two separate actions - usually people - and then overlay that fix - think of it like a stage or room with one "action" running faster than normal speed, and the other you run slower than normal speed. It make the slow stand out like an eternity more, which the fast is gone so fast it cannot become a memory really.
Please if you could tell me, what is the background music from 3:13-7:50? This was the same music that was in the hotel room scene in Chungking Express but I can’t find it
You need to fix the subtitles. Especially to get Wong Kar-Wai's name right - there was not a single time it got right. His name was done as 'wonka white' to 'wonky y' - seriously man, I don't know if I should laugh or cry.
Your channel is my favourite I hope you will get more love ❤️
Appreciate your kind words! I was experimenting with analyzing a movie this time around - good to know it was received well
The video itself is a work of art, which I don't hesitate to recommend to my students in a film course...
I am overwhelmed with appreciation! May I ask what film course you teach?
Favorite film of all time right here, nobody captures a slice of life picture like the master Wong kar wai.
Completely agree . The best of the best . Love also in the mood of love . Tony Leung killing it

Amazing video. Love your analysis and also the old hong Kong clips you've put in
To reiterate, this video essay is a work of art in and of itself.
I love how different all your video-topics are and the examples mentioned are of great taste. I'm looking forward for more

What is that song from at 8:20? Is it from the movie? It sound so familiar.
Wonderful video and content you have created. Thank you
Very nice! Really enjoyed
Please if you could tell me, what is the background music from 3:13-7:50? This was the same music that was in the hotel room scene in Chungking Express but I can’t find it
You can find it as:
Han Yu Lei (Instrumental) by Roel A. Gracia
It's currently on some platforms like Apple Music but not Spotify as far as I know.
The cinematographer of the first story was Andrew Lau. Doyle came in later
Good stuff!
Great to know Alphonse likes this channel
Hey, thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it

@@Litburoaren't you around anymore? saw your last upload was from a year ago :/
great video. I feel the video would feel a thousand times better if you didn't use stock music in the back. most game soundtracks would work better
the first background music please
Hi, I'm wondering where did you find the interview of Wong Kar Wai talking about the step printing technique please?
Song at one 1:40 ?😅

It's auto-generated, it's not his fault. Also I am not sure if you can fix wrongs words and still have the rest auto-generated
