One of my A Level Eng Lit texts was Moll Flanders, by Daniel Defoe. This is how I know about Newgate Prison. Probably the most famous work of fiction that is set in it. So I'm surprised Moll Flanders didn't get a mention. A very interesting potted history nonetheless. Thanks for giving me an idea of what the place looked like, truly the stuff of nightmares. Ditto Tyburn, the hanging tree. You have a great voice for this sort of thing. Smooth and calm.
I worked over many years for a TV news broadcaster & did countless ‘live 2x ways’ outside the Old Bailey during that time. The weirdest thing is it always felt cold there, even working on a warm summers day after a little while I’d start feeling chilly & reach for my coat. The legend goes that it’s the spirits of all the people who died horrible deaths in Newgate Prison, which was where the Old Bailey now stands.

“It quickly gained a reputation” *cites source almost three hundred years after it was built* (I’m guessing there are earlier sources for you to say what you said but your framing made me laugh)
That‘s my problem with it as well. Apparently it was built in the middle ages but the reports from the inside only range between the mid 18th and 19th century when times where ad inhumane as they could be anyway. It‘s unlikely it has been run that exact way for centuries, but the video frames it that way.
Interesting video , there is a remaining wall of Newgate prison located behind Amen Court near the old Baily and it is reputed a ghost of a black dog that once fed on the recent hanged corpse's is sometimes seen to run along the top of it.
'Gate' as a suffix doesn't mean a portal in a wall. It means a road or a street. It comes from the Norse. It eventually became used for a portal. So 'new gate' means New Street. Aldresgate Street means Old Street Street the 'street' being unnecessary because ---gate means ----street.
Imagine being nimble enough in body and mind to escape multiple times, but not smart enough to offer your services to fix their shortcomings in lieu of your sentance to death.
Wait, the criminal sentenced to death should help them improve the prison? Like make it more secure or improve the living conditions? I’m so confused… “not smart enough to offer your services,” Are the notedly heartless guards supposed to listen to the security suggestions of the multiple escapee? Is he supposed to offer these suggestions out of the goodness of his hardened criminal heart? This sounds like some Gen-Z Kumbaya brain rot…

It's substantially more expensive to house prisoners in their own cells than to have communal space. Then every cell needs its own water, its own toilet, beds can't be stacked to save space, common eating areas can't be used. Solitary was only ever worth it for criminals who were truly dangerous to others, which is not the case for most people in prison.
Newgate Prison was a prison at the corner of Newgate Street and Old Bailey Street just inside the City of London, England, originally at the site of Newgate, a gate in the Roman London Wall. Built in the 12th century and demolished in 1904, the prison was extended and rebuilt many times, and remained in use for over 700 years, from 1188 to 1902.
