Good video. My J9+ combo kicks butt in my house all wood floors and 3 dogs. Oh wow the dog hair in the emptying basket I see. If you have dogs (mine are labs) this is a huge help keeping the hair under control.
They dropped the price to 599$ now. I just sent back my j7 to Amazon that was 299$ renewed. For this better battery and better power to vacuum and new vs renewed that was nothing but problems. Win win. Thanks for the review.
Thank you for the helpful comparison! I recently upgraded from a Roomba 980 to the Roomba j7+. Although the j7+ has superior software features and self-emptying bin, I found that its suction power is lower than 980's (!) and that it leaves small particles scattered around hard floors. I'm considering upgrading from the j7+ to the j9+ or s9+. I'd like to know if the s9+ is equal, better, or worse than the j9+ at negotiating the high edges of your carpet
I have i7 without docking station. Would you say j9 or j9+ is worth considering at all ? shame to see they didn't improve it slamming into things despite it having front camera. And it still does get stuck over low obstacles..... meh
I have a J7+ and I like it. But I laugh when it hits the door jam when trying to go through a door. What does it do with the camera if it can’t recognize a door opening?
Great review, Irobot has definitely allowed companies such as Roborock and Ecovacs to get far ahead of them. First, as you said, the J9 still uses vslam instead of lidar. Lidar is far better for mapping and navigation. Many other robots in this price range have at least a 5200 MAH battery, a 4460 battery is better than the J7 but still falls short of the competition. Irobot is also behind with the combo J9 which vacuums and mops. Other combination robots in this price range fill the robot's water tank and they also wash and dry the mop pads. The combo J9 only fills the water tank, you have to clean the mop pads manually.
But lidar going to break down after a year. There is no brand like irobot where the robots can easily go 6 years without problems. More stuff is not always better. I prefer solid products
I have similar chairs. I had to buy some felt stick-on pads to put under the feet. It raised them up enough so now my J7+ doesn't go over. I had to really keep things off the floor everywhere and fix things around the house so it wouldn't get stuck. Mapping a 1250sqft 3bed house takes almost an hour. Thats the most frustrating thing. It has got better with later updates. I've noticed it looks around more in rooms to figure out distances to the walls instead of having to hug them when mapping.
Hi! The best Robovac I have tried recently for elevation changes was the shark detect pro because it can raise itself off the ground. (this feature will be everywhere in 9-12 months). The j7+ could have really used lidar for homes that aren't super big and super organized.
Thank you for the video! I really had a hard time creating the maps. Roomba spent endless time doing the mapping for the entire house even though I removed all the possible obstacles. Also he didn't go where I wanted him to clean on the map. No idea how to improve and train him. Or I didn't set up the maps correctly?
Both s9+ and j9+ are the same price right now; I’m coming from an i7 that I am considering moving upstairs and using new unit for downstairs (my i7 is having a docking issue due to treading but I just ordered new treads and that should hopefully solve issue)- which would you get? Although they’re the same price I can get the j9+ cheaper with target if I use my red card which gives me 5% off but I hesitate knowing the s9 is more powerful, especially on carpet. However our downstairs is 65-70% tile with one rug taking up 30%
Hi! At the same price I would opt for j9+ unless it's a mostly high pile carpeted area. I just put out a new video to explain. But I have seen the s9+ at 559-$599 for black Friday and prime day.
I just got the robot in the mail and the door on the cleaning base that reveals the tanks and storage was busted. I couldnt close it at all and when i finally violently forced it shut, it looked warped and was hard to get back open :( Amazon is sending me a replacement so hopefully this is just a one off...
As much as i want one i will stick to a dyson stick vaccum for now. When these robots start using lidar scanners then maybe ill pick one up. But for almost 2000 i find it bumping into walls ridiculous.
Since the s9 is 4x the power of the j7 (j7 is 10x of the 692 and the s9 is 40x the 692) and the j9 is 100% or 2x the power of the j7, it has to be 50% the power of the s9. These are iRobots claims and figures. Real world, the s9 also presses down harder with the bigger brushrolls so overall, it has better pick up but it's marginal except for heavier carpets where the s9 is better.
Can you confirm your J5 has a last gen bin from J7? I noticed they downgraded the dust bin on the j9+ robot itself. It's a cheaper design without button release.. As well as the two removed rear cliff sensors I mentioned in your J5 video. I'm going to need to test my j9+ sample again for couple days before they send out a replacement since it seems my dustbin sensor is defective and auto empty refuses to engage intermintently.. Wonder if newer bin design is the cause? They told me to turn off "auto empty when full" sensor.. which did seem to fix my problem. Benefits of J9+ vs older robots below S9 : Bigger battery and stronger motor.. S9+ Combo is only thing "better", but it might use more battery juice due to mopping. I was able to clock up around 3 hours of run time on the j9+ and it never had to recharge.. prob could have gone longer in a bigger house. Older robots like i7/i3 would always need to top off 2-3times to finish my house. Insanely nice "upgrade". Edit: I do not recommend "J9" series for bathroom/area rugs.. The stronger motor causes issues and will get stuck since the dynamic power detects carpet and ramps ups higher due to carpet boost when set to medium power.. S9 itself does better due to sheer (bigger) density of robot. i3/i7/j7 variants do not have much of an issue since the motor is lower power and 1 stage. i3/i7/j7 are the basis for most robots not S9/J9. I would assume J8 is a nice compromise.. It's a j7 base design with a bigger battery.
Very nice observations and thank you for sharing. The much bigger battery is a big deal for people with larger homes or want to have the j9 do a 2x clean session. Let me doublecheck on the j5+ bin but it is definitely appears to be same as j7+.
@@TheFrenchGlow I think the newer dust bin is faulty and causing issues for dust around my dust bin optical sensors. Its just a cheaper design without button release.. Waiting for IRobot to respond..
I just feel like the robovac technology is stagnant. Now is gonna be several years again till they release a new model and who knows if all we are gonna get is a tiny baby step in technology once again.
Irobot needs to make peace with competitors, else irobot will not have any tech breakthrough. Don’t even have basic front tof obstacle sensor and rely on old camera cannot detect thin objects. That’s why will get stuck. Noisy as always because it refuse to go with bristle brush. Only knows how to sue people.
Bristle brush you don't want. That's old tech and gets clogged with pet hair and tangles. They rely on the camera for obstacle sensing, which I agree is not great. It does slow down for walls and stuff most of the times so doesn't hit them hard.
I can't be the only one dying laughing watching Thomas the Tank Engine get slaughtered by a robot vacuum.
No, I think you're the only one dying laughing at that.

Very good video. Do we know how many pa’s of suction this model offers?
Is that how you would vacuum with a handheld unit? Pick your crap up before sending the unit to do what it does.
Doubling the suction and battery is not just a software update.
What about the s9 which has more suction but came out years ago? Battery increase is expected though since it's suppose to be the flagship robovac.

What's the deal with the Clean Zone feature. You didn't cover it. Can you adjust the size of any saved zone?
Hi! Yes you can adjust the size of the clean zone to focus on a particular area. It's useful for high traffic areas.
In the very beginning when you say it slamming into things while cleaning you’re in mapping mode and this is how it maps this is normal
which one you pick? S9 OR J9???? they are both $599 now
For carpet homes, s9. For hard floors and homes with kids/pet, j9.

The 100% suction improvement can't be achieved by software. That is a hardware improvement.
