Look at how lean the chefs are. They are hardcore cyclists themselves!

What an amazing professional operation, so much hassle, so many thing to organize, plan and get done on time....so much work for the cyclists, what a specific job for a chef...they make me feel so unfit, disorganized and unhealthy....that's it! They inspired me...I'm cutting down from 5 pancakes and syrup to 4. I also need to clean my kitchen up.

Cool. Is it true that the riders have to eat the hotel food wherever they have to stay?

Vegas Cycling Freak no as most teams have their own cooktruck

In the old days, I remember reading from Greg LeMond about the hotel chef where the team stayed "proudly showing off his chops and stews.. all the vegetarians got was a sad heap of over cooked veg"..

Troy Collett -- I know about the team buses, and chefs and all that. I was just asking because I thought I heard someone recently say that they still had to eat the hotel food where they stay. Maybe I misunderstood...

In races like the Tour Down Under, where the riders are all based in the one hotel, the Hilton, then the team cooks generally use the hotel kitchens... far easier logistically...

busted is the myth they eat 8000 calls a day. looks like they get only 4000 with plates that small.

They eat 8000kcal maybe when the stage is very long like 250km. Then they will eat A LOT during this 6 hours on the bike.. Also don't forget that somebody like Andre Greipel will need a lot more calories than some 55kg rider...

Jiří Hutečka ..thats true.. But there are these videos that show how much a cyclist needs during the tour. And in reality these amounts are way smaller. They dont get 2000 cals during the race from those bars and geld. I have this feeling they get energy ' from other things' but this is just a feeling i have..no proof. I did cycling and later body building, so i know what it means to eat 6000 calls. I would say also way to little animal proteins, for good recovery.

Yes they starving. They need to keep low body fat and even drop more weight during the GT + they also don't need excess of muscles. It is all about body weight/power ratio on the bike.. Btw you need to realize that this is elite of the elite. Their body is extremely efficient. They don't burn as many energy(carbs) as normal or average athletes.. They just need sugars for top performance during the race, but then they run a lot on fat metabolism as well.. If you think that they are on the doping now like in Armstrong era then you are wrong.. In fact I think that cycling is now more "clean" than 90% of other profesional sports.. Btw I was also bodybuilder 10 years.. :)

Nice comment. They are able to ride ~25mph/35kph at 130 heart rate, they are not burning much when drafting, because they are stupid fit, ridiculously fit, mortals have no idea of 30 hours a week aerobic work, all year, for 5-10 years... you get very, very fit. If my normal self road the tour, first it would kill me, second, I would burn those 8k/day, but someone twice as fit is burning half that... for argument's sake.

Jiří Hutečka ..thanks for the insights on the food. Could be right.
Oftopic: they could be doping..if they are smart they will. Just small amounts that wont pass the test, or new stuff. If they cant get extra energy of eating more in risk of getting to heavy..they get energy from other medical suplements. What ever that may be.. Just my thought
