When Phones Were Fun: Samsung's PalmOS Flip Phone (SPH-i500, 2002)

- As this episode of "When Phones Were Fun" hits the server, Samsung has just announced its Galaxy Note20 device family, the tenth generation of its stylus-centric smartphone first announced in 2011. The subject of today’s throwback is not that first Galaxy Note … but rather, an 18-year-old forerunner that folds like the Galaxy Z Flip; packs a stylus like the Galaxy Note; and despite its age, runs a true smartphone OS. The year is 2002, and the phone is the Samsung SPH-i500 - a pioneering smartphone from back in the days when Palms would fold!

Dear Michael,
You don't make reviews,
You make mini-stories,
And we love it...
Exactly! Couldn't have said it better myself
Legit, the writing is so good. His passion for tech (in my opinion) outweighs some of the bigger tech channels out there. I am tuned in every time i see a notification from MrMobile.
@@Jaiysful Often times in media wether that be music, movies, RUclipsr's etc etc, the more underrated they are, the more entertaining, high quality and all around more enjoyable they are in my opinion. For example: Beyonce is the biggest music star but i don't like her music and think she's overrated as all hell, bland pop music but she's gigantic, where as a small local band or musician who only pulls lets say 100k views/listens a song, maybe not even that much, is way more enjoyable and fun to listen to. You can tell that they put more work into their projects because they care more than the big rich dudes who can chuck anything out there and get millions of views and dollars. That's why there's so much crap out there. The small guys like our friend Mr.Mobile are where it's at.
Yeah, was just thinking the other day, I watch his stuff that doesn't concern my needs/wants because its entertaining, I do find myself picking up useful knowledge though... More importantly he genuinely makes the effort to listen and engage with his audience!

I absolutely love this series. The anecdotes from the past that Michael sprinkles is an additional touch I love.
Agreed
Ikr
This should have been a youtube original series
Same, I worked at Best Buy and sold these things. The Palma and treks were the iPhones of the day. Not as popular of course but so cool.

Who else gets a warm, comfortable feeling with a smile on their face while watching these videos? Thank you for these Michael. Even if I've never used a certain old phone i love watching videos about old retro phones, it's amazing how fun and cool looking these phones are, crazy how far we've came. Everyone is loving this series so much, you've struck gold AND you're at 998k subs, you are finally so close to a million, well deserved my friend. Your videos are literally the best, you deserve every bit of success. Much love from Australia.
999k right now :)
Proud to be part of the early squad before the 1mil mark 😍
so true🙂
100% agree
.
and i think.. not him.. but it is us who struck gold.. in finding him🖒🤗
This series helped jog my memory to my two favorite fun phones; the Pantech Pursuit and the Palm Pre Plus. Now I have to pause Michael's videos so that I can smile about my own experiences.
The "next generation came with mp3" statement is what made me love Windows Mobile. You didn't need to wait for a next generation. All you needed was a codec nicely packed in a .cab file and off you go. That's how my HTC P3600 would play the very legitimate .avi or .mpg films I'd convert to a lower resolution so that they could fit on the SD card.
This has become by far my favourite RUclips series. The way you present it with love and wonder is much needed in the cynical age
Congratulations in advance for 1million subscribers man...u deserve it all..keep making these unique videos
I am obsessed with early mobile phones. They truely are the golden age of phones in terms of fun factor. At 3:32 where you thought back fondly of your techy memories I had the funniest thought -- imagine in 10 or 20 years someone having a RUclips channel just like yours and doing this series with the same jovial nostalgia ... They'd just be going through a tonne of same same looking flat slate phones lol 😂
Thissssssss
@@aditjindal uP
@Amit Shan also apple... for making the first product that was a smash hit and nothing truly innovating after that.
Not gonna lie this series brings back so much memories because a great glance at the past , makes me just that little bit happier for the future
It started with just one "When Phones Were Fun" video, then i found myself binge watching the series. Now i anxiously anticipate a new episode every time
Same here!!!
This series is absolutely awesome! And no other person than Michael Fisher lives it like that!
Really enjoying this series. Really brings me back in time. I was a child during this era and there were some wicked cool ads I'd see now and again watching Wheel of Fortune followed by Jeopardy every weeknight. I appreciate the trips you take me on.
Congratulations in advance for 1million subscribers man...u deserve it all..keep making these unique videos
YO, THAT "RINGER ONE" SLAPPPS!!!
In all seriousness, I'm here for the eventual Palm Pre and Pre 2 episodes. And maybe the Palm Pixi, too? 😁
Talking about Palm, you can never left out the Treo series, it was benchmark setting in terms of smartphone physical thumboard
I love Graffiti!! I could write faster on my Handspring Visor Prism than I could on paper. I even loaded it on my first few Android phones!
The glyph system made total sense at the time. Phones were not powerful enough to do true handwriting recognition, so Palm made you draw the letters in a way the phone could recognize.
I thought I was the only one (re: Graffiti writing speed). And when Palm enabled the entire screen of their Zire 71 to be a writing surface (left side letters, right side numbers), I'd wind up using Graffiti in lieu of my normal handwriting, which led many a coworker to think I'd suffered a stroke or something....
@@thomasmallory4629 For the longest time I'd write Graffiti on paper. :)
Yeah, same. I had a bunch of Palms in the late 90s and early 2000s and grafitti was just so quick and reliable once you adapted to it. I still kinda miss it.
Anybody could learn to write graffiti fast and reliably in an hour. I thought it was brilliant and still do, I have a graffiti app on my Note 5. I don't use it, because now I'm a Swype maniac.
I still think that Palm OS was a beautiful usable system that rivals anything in 2020. There weren't that many variations but they weren't needed, because Palm OS was just so perfectly done. You never had to "learn" anything, because everything was completely obvious. And my Centro had still and video photography. And a web browser that worked fine for simple net searches.
I miss it.
Ha, and once you adapted to the Grafitti, it destroys your real handwriting when using pen and paper!!
that Kyocera 7135 was a powerhouse of its time, I destroyed a college exam where I have to calculate weather data to design a drainage system, usually it takes almost 3 hours to finish using scientific calculator, I fizzled past it in a little more than an hour because I preloaded all the formula to the spreadsheet app (DataViz' Docs-To-Go). Back then in Indonesia, smartphones and PDAs were still Star Trek gadgets for most people, I've got mine bought 2nd hand from a gadget lover community.
This is why you are MrMobile and not a random tech reviewer
I had this phone for years and loved it. I had the charging station, extended battery packs, the leather cases.. Man. I loved this phone.
That's a cool old smartphone, never heard of it before. Here's another cool suggestion Michael: Nokia N90. It was a smartphone that was way ahead of it's time with its almost "Retina" 259 ppi display in 2005 - 5 years before the first Retina iPhone 4. It was truly sharp back then, even passable by today's standards. It was also among one of the first devices capable of selfies with its turning 2 megapixel camera module.
It was the device that got me started in photography and I'll always fondly remember it.
Nokia N series was something else..once in a tv show I saw a person win an award for making a 30min film using (I think) this N90. Nokia's were so good, making something new every year.
I had a Treo 680 and LOVED it!! I remember it being so futuristic and cutting edge. I got really, really good at Grafiti since I'd started the "Palm Life" with an m105, but having a full qwerty keyboard was so much better. I still have my 680, and it still works... even after being ran over 3 times (over the course of the last year I used it) by an Ambulance. I was an EMT at the time and used it for GPS navigation, pharmacological lookups and of course wasting time while waiting for a call to drop. Space Trader was my favorite Palm OS game. It helped pass many, many hours of downtime.
Love this series of old fun phones you got going. I think you are great,. Keep it up man.
I don't know exactly why this specific series of yours feels so satisfying to watch!! Please keep this series up! ❣️
Great work as always, Mr. Mobile! This is honestly one of my favorite series of yours because I get to take a look at the tech that was around when I was a kid which pioneered what we have today. Great work
Dude, Ringer 1 could straight-up be an iconic rock riff. I think it's a banger
This series is so nice because it brings me back to the good old days and allows me to forget all the crazy stuff going on, great installment as usual.
Congratulations on hitting 1 mil subs! Been watching your reviews over the past 3 years or so and never understood why you didn't get more subs for these quality reviews. Glad to see you finally hit that milestone Michael!
Huge Congratulations Mr. Mobile!
I have been following and watching almost all the videos since the channel’s inception.
Love your style and exclusivity!
Good luck and waiting for more unique content!
I absolutely love this series!!! I’m getting all the nostalgic feels 🥰

This series is amazing. I never knew this phone existed!
its obvious to not know them cause there were no yutubers to unbox them back then

Congratulations Michael, even though your first million subscribers may come as an Android update , i wish your next million comes to you as an iOS update.
IOS may not even be around by the time he gets 2 mill
Man I just love this series. That is all, have a great day everyone!
This series warms my heart, makes me understand the tech of yester year and appreciate today's advancement all while being immersed in a beautifully shot, wonderfully edited, soothing narrative which wins my heath
A true captain the call you SIR!!
Me: oh nice Michael finally uploaded a video about the Note 20. Michael: *talks about retro phone* haha still appreciate the content!
Note20 is still on a FedEx truck, unless they're lying about that again (which they probably are). Anyway, this is more fun.
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] Gotchya, looking forward to hearing your take. Your opinion on it might help me pull the trigger. Great video as always!
I think i had a motorola at the time... It had snake🤩🤣
Did Nokia license Snake? I feel like that was an exclusive game, wasn't it?

Not ... not once Graffiti got involved.

One million subscribers is right around the corner. I'm excited for you!
Only Mr. Mobile can bring us this kinda content. Really really appreciate the well informed throwbacks Michael. Thanks 🙏
This is one of my favorite series. Some of these phones I never knew of growing up but I seen people use them; mind you; this is all before I became enthralled by mobile tech. Thank you Michael for these videos. Keep up the great content! :)
Michael, thank you those these videos on classic phones! When I was a kid in the early-2000s, I was obsessed with phones from this era. I'm sure everyone at Best Buy's mobile section thought I was strange, but who cares! Phones back then were so cool.
I too was one of the people who always ducked into the phone store at my local outlet center to see what was new! The Sprint staff never seemed to notice or care, even though I spilled so much cash in that place. Ha.
1 million here we go!
You deserve it soo much! ❤️

I love this kind of videos. It brings back all the lovely memories. Spending hours in the electronic department of a Kaufhof (German pendant of Walmart), playing with those devices and dreaming about how one day, I will be able to afford one of those things.
