[WHEN PHONES WERE FUN: LG CRYSTAL GD900]
The last time I brought you back to 2009 to show you a semi-transparent phone, the label on the casing said “Sony Ericsson” and the clear part was the screen. This time around? The name on the box says “LG” and it’s the keypad that’s “Crystal” clear. I’m Michael Fisher and it took me many months to chase down a working LG GD900 on eBay; join me as I go hands-on with the twelve-year-old “LG Crystal!”

[ABOUT WHEN PHONES WERE FUN - LG CRYSTAL GD900]
This is the thirteenth in a series of MrMobile videos exploring the mobile tech world's most vibrant period in design and experimentation. In “When Phones Were Fun,” Michael Fisher re-reviews cellphones from the golden age of mobile, the decade-long span from the turn of the century to approximately 2009.
When Phones Were Fun: Episode 13 features the LG GD900 / LG Crystal, a sample of which was purchased on eBay by MrMobile / Future plc. LG did not pay a fee or otherwise offer compensation in exchange for this coverage, nor did it preview or approve this content before publication. The lone sponsor of this video is HelloFresh.

Good to have you back with another excellent video - You highlighted really well that micro period (basically 2009) of pre-smartphone smartphones; clunky interfaces, unresponsive touchscreens, tiny number of proprietary apps. It's actually a really interesting area because looking back we went from 'dumbphones' to android/iphones really quickly. I hope you can feature more of these devices that fell through the gap

    • @MattiaCavalloBr
      @MattiaCavalloBr 3 года назад +21

Yeah, if you were lucky you get an operating system with a proper app market (symbian, maemo, a crazy thing that in Europe we know as "Vodafone 360", etc), otherwise you only got a bunch of pre-installed apps (basically Facebook, twitter and some unknown im services)

Given enough horsepower, touchscreen feature phones could end up alright. Samsung Jet / UltraTouch were pretty good, probably would have had one of those over a Nokia 5800, though IMO at this time these phones were mostly gimmicks and hype. The industry's turning point was mid year 2009, suddenly you could get a proper, big screen, fully capacitive real smartphone for the same price or less than these, and by the same time in 2010 you could get yourself an HTC Wildfire, a perfectly capable droid-based phone for less than $300. I really do miss this brief period in time, it was so exciting.

Whenever I see the recommendation highlighting 'When phones were fun'.. the nostalgia and happiness that hits me is something I can't describe..
BTW crystal is a beautiful phone and its a shame it never launched in India coz I can assure you, it would had been a great hit, well of course, until apple was all ready to be in everyone's pocket.
But that happened in 2010..so crystal would have reigned india telecom market for a good year.
Thank you Michael for this wonderful review. 😊

That's what I miss the most about those days, manufacturers took risks, they did crazy things that we loved, and were fun. A small part of me wish the iPhone didn't come out, so we wouldn't be stuck with rectangle slabs if glass. But let's see what the future holds with foldables, flips, swivels, and rollables.

Thank you for the video, it brings back a lot of memories of that time.
This is one of my all time favourite phones.
I would just like to add an interesting thing about the phone,
The small silver mirror next to the back camera was to help take selfies using the 8MP main camera.
LG also launched a bluetooth spatially designed for this phone which was also transparent in parts and quite unique for the time.

i still have this baby in my drawer. & its still works. see, i bought this used LG Crystal in 2010. it is quite high-end 8MP phone back then. a years after when my wife dropped it at the gas station during refueling. i thought i lost my rare LG Crystal for good. to my surprise, i found it on random phone repair shop in 2014. because that phone was so rare in my locals. i immediately felt that "this is my phone". so i bought it for the second time with all the scratchers it has. now, its sitting next to my LG Chocolate & LG Chocolate Platinum edition collections. 😊

I sure miss era from 2008-2012 where manufacturers went crazy with experiments to see what sticks and what don't because back then every phone screamed with it's own personality... Those were fun and exciting times

My daily driver is an LG Rebel 4. Not the fanciest smartphone, I know, but I love what LG brings to the table when it comes to phones. Back in the day, I owned a Motorola Krave(look into that one, Mr. Mobile. I think you'd appreciate it as it's nickname was 'the Star Trek phone', due to it's flip style).
However, upon seeing this, I think I may have opted for this phone instead, had I known it existed. It definitely looked like a phone that was 'fun', and something that fit my preferences at the time.
I love this series more than you know. Keep those videos coming.

In 2009, I was in 8th grade, and had the LG Chocolate Touch. It had 2 interchangeable back covers in either black or purple with a weird rubberized pattern on the back, and was supposed to have a great music player. It was very similar in design and functionality to the Crystal, but without a physical keypad. I had it through my first month of high school as a freshman, when I got an LG Ally to replace it (but only had that a year before I realized how much of a flop it was).

At one of my previous jobs, I was lucky enough to be invited to LG offices in the UK, to check out their new handset of the time. the LG Crystal.
They were hoping we could endorse the phone as impressive new tech.
After my hands on with it, playing with all the gestures and going through the menus.
I had one thing to say about it, it's cool, but it's sluggish and painful to use.
They quickly thanked me for my time, packed everything away and ushered me out the offices.
That was the last we heard from LG.
