Should Orthodox Christians LOVE or HATE the World? Compromise, Polemic & Engagement

- It's kind of an insane world out there these days. So how should Orthodox Christians respond to it, not just online but in daily life? Here I give my philosophy for how that should work, using a key principle from the Church Fathers -- the soteriological motive.

One thing which I didn't mention but had intended to: I've noticed that those who overall lean toward compromise and those who prefer polemic actually feed off each other in a kind of symbiotic relationship. Each group tends to make the other one feel justified, pushing each other further into the extremes.
They also both tend to see engagement as an impossibility and not even a real thing -- someone engaging must actually be just another Compromiser or Polemicist to be rejected.

Thank you Father Andrew! The ‘echo chamber’ could be the subject of a whole stream. If one researches the funding of certain ‘academic’ groups and the ‘non profits’ they promote, one can find the same sources funding them, the same individuals on the boards of organizations that ‘echo’ each other.-Often in leadership or as founders of different groups used to echo the other. So in the end it’s not many organizations ‘calling for’ certain changes/ it’s one group of people behind different groups. Reminiscent of Oz. Some in my parish have started doing the research tracing the funding sources & individuals pushing to ‘change’ the Orthodox church. Another great research project! This topic of loving or hating the world has been on my mind a lot lately. Thanks for this Father Andrew. I'm only about two years into my journey into becoming Orthodox (or, maybe this is just the conscious or intentional part of the journey), and I still find my mind getting blown almost every day.

Indeed. But we also have the language of John 3:16, "For God so loved the world..." not to mention the next verse (John 3:17): "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him."
The phrase "the world" gets used in different ways in the Christian tradition and even just in the Scriptures. Where we run into problems is when we cut out parts of the tradition in an attempt to emphasize other parts.
@@frandrewstephendamick I presume as Orthodox Christians who are well catechized we can discern our usage of "the world" based on the context we see it used. The trouble begins when those outside the Church see and hear us without that understanding. We come off a bit edgy, which I'm okay with so long as I'm permitted the opportunity to explain my meaning.
I wonder, Father, if you could make a video specifically addressing pastoral care for people who struggle with same sex attraction and/or gender dysphoria, as it’s now called by the psychiatric profession. My observation has been that many people, both laity and clergy, are very vocal about wanting “those people” to leave the Church. I’m not speaking here of activists but of people who are suffering and fearful of God, the Church body and their own families should their situations become known. And, once known, struggling to bear the often vitriolic treatment they may receive, often from the people closest to them, along with their pastors and bishops, and the condemnation that lives inside of them, as well. There is obviously a broader spectrum of experiences than this - but many people could use encouragement in Christ concerning these difficulties. I wonder, too, if you could speak to the Christian way for Orthodox Christians to treat people who are in this situation within their parishes and dioceses. Many people are hurting and families and communities divided (including my own). How can individuals, families, and parishes be reconciled and healed from these afflictions? And if someone does go out from the Church over these issues, what can we do for them? What can we do to draw people with these issues into the Church for healing and salvation?

This is an excellent help regarding facing the world in the faith. Thank you, Father.
Another aspect is how to approach the world on an every day basis where the faith might not be directly confronted by individuals, but where simply those things in life and around us are not 'in line' with the faith. Such things as politics. I see certain Orthodox apologists engage a lot with political subjects and events which might certainly support or go against Orthodox beliefs. And yet, the subject itself is 'worldly'... if you see what I mean.
In my own case, I used to be very vocal and active politically, but now I try to avoid it as being a distraction from my own salvic goals. There are the obvious subjects of abortion laws and the current transgender 'fashion' that seems to be the hot potato with politicians. But politics covers so many things.
I'd be interested in views on such more broader aspects of 'The World'.

I have a question. I was a devout Catholic, but have been Orthodox the last 20 years. In a nutshell, over 30 years ago my husband attempted to murder me. I survived. My children and I were immediately put into a safe house in protective custody and then into a protection program that kept us in hiding for the next 18 years. I filed for a divorce early on. I never remarried. Did I compromise in obtaining a divorce?
This is a discussion to have with your own parish priest. I'm not really qualified to discuss personal pastoral matters with people I don't know.
@@frandrewstephendamick I did discuss it with him many years ago. I also told him about this video. He asked me what your response was. I said you hadn’t responded as of yet. But I imagine your response, if you knew me personally, would be the same as his was and the same as the responses of several other priests I took my sister to when she found herself in a similar situation and was torn about leaving her husband…. it would have been a sin to stay and not get a divorce. Not everyone who gets a divorce does so frivolously. Perhaps you could do a video sometime on domestic violence and child abuse and how that affects a marriage and the soul-wrenching decision of divorce(?) Thank-you for responding even though you felt you couldn’t discuss it with me. I understand.
