This is my third season with mine. My batteries work fine. You get more cutting if you push more, not using the self-propelled feature. Thick/tall grass burns more electricity. I have no recharging issues with my batteries yet. Had to buy after market batteries from Amazon to cut entire yard, even though mine is about 3/4 acre. I am very happy with it. It does a good job. 🙂

Brand new with bag, no batteries but I found a 40v 6amp with charger on marketplace for 40$ so I’m all in at 140 and just used it today and let me say it’s amazing, my first time using a electric mower and it got the job done now I don’t have to pay someone to come out every 2 weeks

Great job with the review ! thanks again from Canada!
We just bought this mower and although I've only used it once, I absolutely love it! Every component of this mower is easy; from setting the height, to removing the bag to empty, to putting it away! We are excited to no longer have a gasoline/oil engine mower.
@@Voltomess since it's pretty lightweight and easy to fold up, I just fold it up and clean it that way by hand. It's pretty easy to be honest. I may use a damp rag at times, but I normally just use a shop brush or an old house broom head I use to also clean off my snowblower in the winter.
Is it pretty easy to move. I want to ship one to my dad since he says he is struggling to use his gas powered one even though it’s self propelled. How is it holding up? 🙏 thanks
I bough the push 40 volts last week and I’m really surprised how good it cuts the grass and also very light. I finished cutting my lawn faster than the self propelled one I had before because since it’s lighter I can go faster than the slow self propelled one.
I just got it. I'm surprised how it was packaged. I'm close to 80 and packaging was brilliant. Just getting ready for first mow. My lawn guy would never show. Hell, I paid 460 with sales tax and all at Euless, TX store for machine. So mower was about 200 and my Harbor Freight solar panel will charge it.

The grass is very thick, We usually complete job with both batteries in about 45 minutes. To be fair, we sometimes do have to grab a third as the grass is thick enough that we can only get about a 12-15 bite per pass. We don't bag or discharge, only mulch. That brings the mower down to about $240. Even better this week as the kit has been reduced by $50 (Late July, 2021). As I'm already heavily invested in 40v gear, this was a steal.
Great video, very thorough review. I wish you had touched more upon the physical aspect of the handles-it appears that in order for it to run, the two handles in the front need to be held back as well as that horizontal self-propel yellow bar in the back -at the same time. I bought one and I still haven't used it but I am still impressed with all the features! I bought a different brand of a battery operated mower about 15 years ago and this one beats it by a mile! The only thing is that this one did not come with a manual!!! But this video does the job anyway!! A man at Home Depot saw me buy it and he said he bought a battery operate one where it has a seat you can sit on and he said it worked perfectly!!
I bought the single-blade version. The blade was dull. After sharpening, the mower did a better job. IMHO these mowers are good for folks with small yards.
I bought this... looked all last year and couldn't bring myself to get it. Glad I waited and this one came out this year with all the attachments and the cross blade. Thank you for the very helpful review. I unboxed, charged and mowed right away. BUT I couldn't figure out the mulching block. Thanks for the hands on view! I can now finish my yard!
I’ve had mine for about 3 lawn cuts now and I will say it’s awesome. But! The harder it works on long thick grass and between the self propelled option it will go through those two batteries fairly quick! I got a big yard but I’ve found that if I let my grass grow maybe 3 inches or so and it’s thick the mower powers through it but the battery drains quicker.
Great review. Very through and I like how you showed everything in detail. I'm in a need of a new mower and am leaning towards one of the Ryobi models. So, now I'll watch another that's not the crosscut. :)
As to how Ryobi gets their coverage expectation (3/4 acer), I suspect that by not using the self-propelled feature the mower would easily cover that area. This has been the case for me with another ryobi 40v mower.
@@Shoptoolreviews I am looking for a battery powered mower that I DO NOT have to use the self propel on. Is it possible to use this mower without the mower propelling itself forward? Thanks & very well done video.
@@19frog68 you can push if you choose. It pushesuke a fairly heavy push mower. You a ould be beter off buying the base model without the self propelled feature. It has a 20 inch cut instead of a 21.
Like David B what about self propelled. There are times when you have to stop self propelled function and just push in certain situations. Around flower beds, trees move forward and backward etc.Does it freewheel when necessary? Most gas mowers I have owned do. The grass catcher seems quite small also. My Craftsman has a 2.4 Bu. and it seems to fill fast. I do not know why the newer mowers all have small grass catcher bags. I do not think Ryobi is quite there yet. Thank You for the review.
Just got the new non-self propelled 'whisper' model. It's great. The dual blades give a great cut, and mulch like a champ. I can do my, average size, lawn on one battery. Love how quiet it is, and love how it folds up in the garage.
Wow. Ryobi support told me the blades cannot be disengaged. The blades stop only when you turn off the mower completely. I am so happy and anxious to try what you did because there are soft- and hard-scaped areas on a slope, and I really hoped that the self-propel feature can be used without engaging the blades for obvious reasons.
My lot is rather big for living in a smaller town, about half an acre and my riding lower mower took a shit last year so I've been looking into getting a battery one. It will probably be this based off your video, thanks!!
A metal deck is a big plus for many people. However, there are those that prefer these lighter plastic decks. Yes, the deck can/will flex enough to touch the blade, but we found that it's typically when the temperature is rather hot. I do think this is something that RYOBI needs to remedy, at the same time, I don't know that it's causing real problems. Thanks for watching.
Rip off 2 blades re install only the 1 lower blade. Now you can mow 2 full ackers with two 6Ah batteries. Mowing with only 1 lower blade and doubles your range doubles your power doubles your speed.. I own the new Cross-cut and removed the 2 blades and installed a 20" single blade on my Cross-cut big big improvement in power and speed. You will love the simple easy no cost Cross-cut modification. FYI I also own the older metal deck self propelled Ryobi.
Great mower overall. It cuts through thick grass better than my last gas mower. The big downside are the ergonomics on the handle. You have to really clamp down on the safety handle that keeps the blade spinning. Pushing down on the bar to engage the self propelled drive hurts your thumbs over time. If you have arthritis look for something else.
I do like ryobi getting better and better with its cordless mowers. I remember first one used to take 3-4 batteries to mow my lawn. NOw their times least only need 2 now, i hope some point we can use just 1 battery and possibly have it get up to 5-6 inches high. Keep on improving you products ryobi, im glad i stuck with you. Price is alittle high though, may have check some of the older ryobi mowers. Had mine for 3-4 years now and while like it gets frustrating mowing sometimes, especially when rains non-stop for few days to almost a week and that grass gets crazy thick sometimes.
@@Shoptoolreviews Im hoping maybe this summer or even clsoe to christmas it go on sale. I usually do that with my mowers since home depot does that during those time
Good presentation. When I looked previous at battery powered home owner mowers (riding and push) cleaning appeared to be an issue. The owners manuals stated "Do not hose down unit with water". You stated in this video that you hosed down the unit with water for cleaning? Like I said, in my previous investigation of battery lawnmowers for home owners, cleaning with water is an issue. Please comment. Thanks
I purchased the high end double 40 volt Ryobi mower. Model RY401200. Compared to my Honda mower that I bought 30 years ago for $900 (that almost $2000 in today's money) its like comparing a 62 VW to a Bentley Continental. Of course my Honda mower according to the local mower shop is the best one Honda ever made. The price alone might indicate that. Well I got the electric one for, well, trying to be a good neighbor and keeping the noise down. The Honda mower does a vastly better job. So much in fact that I most likely will rarely use the Ryobi. I might even sell it as barely used. I always try to buy the best. After taxes I gave Home Depot almost $600 for that mower. I probably wouldn't get more than $300 for it now even though it has about an hour of use on it. Live and learn!
Thanks very much for the review. I wish you had cut some heavy thick, tall grass to challenge it a little bit as a gas mower usually cuts through it but electric can really struggle
Yes I agree. Also even fairly low grass that is still wet from morning dew can give them trouble. I do like the fact that I can clean it off and just bring it into my unfinished basement.
I've had the first generation Ryobi mower for several years. I couldn't be happier. No maintenance other than sharpening the blades. The plastic deck is great because the reduced weight makes it easier to push (mine isn't self-propelled). I like the feature on the latest generation of being able to switch batteries by switching the key around. The self-propelled feature probably eats into the run time.
Great to hear that the Gen 1 is still working well for you. Sure, the Self-Propelled eats into the runtime, but it still cuts a lot of grass. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the review. I bought the Ryobi 40v weed eater this Spring and love it! I'm about to get the blower next. If this goes on sale in the fall or winter, I will definitely get one! But I'm certain that I will get one eventually regardless. Not having to mix gas and oil or buy the blend for my weed eater has been nice! By the way, you sound a lot like Peyton Manning!! Great review....Thanks again!
I wish people reviewing these electric mowers would test them on a yard that needs mowing and not one that was already freshly cut. I saw one and only one review where the grass actually needed cutting and this mower only went 24 feet in one row before dying.
Great review, just bought one. The height adjustment I think is actually the best part! It does take a little getting used to when turning to not let your hand off the trigger too far or else you have to restart it. That’s my only complaint.
It was still Winter when the video was shot. It's hard to find plush, thick, green grass in the middle of February, even in Florida. We'll try to follow-up with another video as the grass grows. Thanks for watching.
How about twigs & leaves? I worry about fall mulching with electric mowers. I tried an electric a few years ago and liked it fine with clean grass, but I switched back to my old gas one because it was too weak.
I was looking this up on the HomeDepot app and one Reviewer was complaining about how the deck warps! And that allows the TWO BLADES to cut into the deck! Leaving two cuts in that thin plastic!
Great video.. One major drawback is the replacement batteries (40V 6.0A) cost $200 each. I'm thinking you'll have to budget for that every 3 years or so.
We have the other version made by the same company with the one blade I did not know they made one with 2 blades it cuts very good and quiet keep up the good work
Great video, thanks for making it perfect, clear and concise. My only complaint about this mower is the height of the handle adjustment, only 2 positions. I need a 3rd as I'm 6'4, way too low for me.
I would be cautious to recommend it in your case. It does require some squeezing to keep the handles depressed. The next time you're at the Home Depot, see what you think. Thanks for watching.
GREAT review. 90% sure they figured 3/4 acre time is without using self-propel. I'd bet my lunch. For bigger lawns, it'd probably be a good idea to keep one battery on the quick charger while the other is in use, then just swap as you go. For suburban lawns, going with use one/charge one would likely allow indefinite run time.
Ryobi says in their user manual that you will get longer battery run time using a combination blade option rather than the cross-cut option.......so maybe they used that to arrive at the 3/4 acre.....great review!
I went to Home Depot, and I saw this lawn mower, and I said to myself. “WhATs CAn Be sO gReAt AbOUt tHiS MowER.” And after watching this video, I think I’m going to get it!
Do your hands/fingers get tired easily on this one? I feel like having to hold the yellow safety and push with thumbs seems harder than the other HP 40V model that has the traditional pull back lever. Thanks.
@@Jade_902 I have gotten used to driving it and although it still bothers my hands I switch off. I looked at other models and they either don’t work as well or they have a similar design.
Nice review, thanks. Be nice if the battery switched over automatically to the second one. I’m returning my Toro 60V that has 3 cables about to be cut every time the handle is collapsed for storage. Toro rushed theirs to market.
Just wondering how hard is this to push if not using self propelled feature? does the eclectic motor disengage to let you do this? Or do you half to use it. Thanks for this video!
Great point, and we should have covered this in the video, but didn't. It does NOT disengage. If you don't use the feature, then you're pushing against the motor. I really don't know why you wouldn't use it. This propelling motor is not the one that draws all the power, it's the blade that does that. Thanks for watching.
@@Shoptoolreviews would you say its hard to push against the motor. I currently have gas self propelled but don't always use it . So was wondering. Thanks for the reply!
Great video I just wish the handle bars adjusted the way the older models did but I did here you say it is good for 6ft 2 in height person that made me feel better will be buying this mower soon
Do you HAVE to use the self-propel mode? What if you just wanted to push it? I wonder if their “up to” run-time is based on saving power by not using the self-propel mode.
The demonstration was great but I needed abetter demonstration on the installation of the mulch piece installation, which side is up and which end goes in first
Great review. I appreciate you mentioning the time. My yard is not a field like you test on. I spend a lot of mowing time turning and going around things. Acerage is less important than run time to me. Were you using the self propelled feature in the test?
If I buy the 3 in 1 version of this, can I add the second blade later to get the cross cut action? Or is it not set up to accommodate the second blade?
We just got one and I think we’re going to have to return it. Problem is, after you start it, it will turn off anywhere from a minute to three minutes. After mowing my small front yard, I probably restarted it 25 times.
How does this compare to the latest EGO self propelled? I purchased it last summer and returned it because of cut quality on Bermuda and St Augustine grass. I had blades of grass it missed all over the place. Sucked because I like the footprint of that mower. It was pricey though especially compared to this.
Thanks so much for the video. I am also 6’2” and worried that adjusting the bar to the higher setting might mean I walk too close to the mower and kick the bag with my feet when walking. Did you find that at all?
Love this mower! I live in Florida and take pride in my lawn, cutting St.Augustine Flortam variety which now is thick and plush. Slices through it like butter, Sold all my gas-powered lawn equipment, and went totally electric, This mower and the Ryobi brushless 40-volt attachment system. Silly as it sounds, now I look forward to cutting the lawn
Can the LED light be turned off? I don’t think id want to mow at night anyway lol but no need for it during the day. So if the light can he turned off to avoid it sucking extra juice from the battery even better
one other thing that the operator's manual does not say, and even ryobi support's answer was confusing, ie., didn't answer the question in a way that I could understand. Cross-cut vs. Combination. page 11 says there are two modes, and that's all it says. My question is, how do I really know by looking at the blades whether it is operating as cross-cut or as combination? And if it's cross-cut (which I mostly need), how would I "convert" it to combination cut mode? Is it a separate blade that I need to purchase? Do I just modify the cross-cut blades in some way so that it's operating in combination mode? They say the combination blade will increase run times. Page 12 tells you how to replace blades, but again, what is the real difference between cross-cut configuration and "combination" configuration?
I bought one because of this video so thank you for sharing, I absolutely love it.
I just bought me one! I can't wait to pick it up and try it out!
Metal deck is a MUST! This expensive mower has a deck that flexes just enough to make the blades scrape the deck!
Great Review, made things very simple. I love the warranty and nice machine.
This new 40V HP is pretty impressive and it's quite a big jump from their previous models. Thanks for watching.
@@Shoptoolreviews Im hoping maybe this summer or even clsoe to christmas it go on sale. I usually do that with my mowers since home depot does that during those time
Great video for this mower. Just bought one based on Consumer Report reviews, Getting away from gas and oil and maintenance.
We can do this on a follow-up, once the grass starts growing quick. Thanks for watching.
Yes I agree. Also even fairly low grass that is still wet from morning dew can give them trouble. I do like the fact that I can clean it off and just bring it into my unfinished basement.
@@Shoptoolreviews is your grass long enough to do a review in thick grass? Thanks
Great job on this review! Super helpful! Thank you!
Where and how do u sharpen the blades? Sorry noob here
Thank you for the review.
Sorry pal, your best part of this mower usually never have to be use again after you set the height for your lawn the first time!
Great video! Thanks! I was switching my battery out and not using the red key! ✌🏽👍👍👍
Ps.. I totally love my mower!!
I wish somebody would make a video with one of these in a real-world situation every one of these videos online has very short grass
I did
@Alfonso Luka Nah not really
having just bought this and mowed my long grass 3 days after a storm it chewed through with zero complaints. absolutely would recommend.
I was looking this up on the HomeDepot app and one Reviewer was complaining about how the deck warps! And that allows the TWO BLADES to cut into the deck! Leaving two cuts in that thin plastic!
We have yet to see this type of flex in this mower/deck. We even store it in a shop that routinely gets to be 120+F. Thanks for watching.
Love your content keep the vids coming
Thanks! Will do! Thanks for watching.
I will be buying for my quarter acre lot. Thanks for the review.
Great video.. One major drawback is the replacement batteries (40V 6.0A) cost $200 each. I'm thinking you'll have to budget for that every 3 years or so.
Agreed. Hopefully, they'll last longer than the warranty. Thanks for watching.
Is this an easy model to use with arthritic hands? Does the unit require extended squeezing of the handles?
I would be cautious to recommend it in your case. It does require some squeezing to keep the handles depressed. The next time you're at the Home Depot, see what you think. Thanks for watching.
GREAT review. 90% sure they figured 3/4 acre time is without using self-propel. I'd bet my lunch. For bigger lawns, it'd probably be a good idea to keep one battery on the quick charger while the other is in use, then just swap as you go. For suburban lawns, going with use one/charge one would likely allow indefinite run time.
Ryobi says in their user manual that you will get longer battery run time using a combination blade option rather than the cross-cut option.......so maybe they used that to arrive at the 3/4 acre.....great review!
really love that huge oak in the background...
Thanks for sharing and providing this review.
Everything I wanted to see in a review video! Perfecto. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
I went to Home Depot, and I saw this lawn mower, and I said to myself. “WhATs CAn Be sO gReAt AbOUt tHiS MowER.” And after watching this video, I think I’m going to get it!
Picking this up today, thanks for the video! Buh bye gas, hello ryobi ecosystem!
I have nothing against gas. Drill baby drill. Ii do however have A LOT of headaches with small gas engines. So, just purchased this today!!!
@@jimfromMaine i love it, so light, does the whole yard, can go right into my other 40v tools to complete. no more maintenance, cords, or gas
Do your hands/fingers get tired easily on this one? I feel like having to hold the yellow safety and push with thumbs seems harder than the other HP 40V model that has the traditional pull back lever. Thanks.
We just purchased this mower and one of my biggest complaints is holding the handle and the lever. It actually hurts my hands.
I’m returning mine for this very reason. You would think paying six hundred dollars they would have a better design.
@@Jade_902 I have gotten used to driving it and although it still bothers my hands I switch off. I looked at other models and they either don’t work as well or they have a similar design.
@@oystein8371 auto mower? Like a roomba for your yard?
Husqvarna automower.. look it up. I cant understand why ppl still mow manually.
Very good information. The video cleared up several things, Thank you.
Nice review, thanks. Be nice if the battery switched over automatically to the second one. I’m returning my Toro 60V that has 3 cables about to be cut every time the handle is collapsed for storage. Toro rushed theirs to market.
Thanks for the review
I get mine tomorrow
This review has helped me, thank you!
We just got this mower. Thanks for going all over the features and accessories. I think I can start mowing :)
Thanks for the video! I wonder if it would have went the whole length if it's on the lowest speed.
Just got these in my store. You're a monster man!
I appreciate that. Thanks for watching.
I'm Scottish. I'm buying this mower just because it's made in the West. (And it's the dogs bollox).
Thanks for this video. Looking at getting one this spring for my little 3/10 acre lot. Tired of the gas and maintenance that goes with gas engine.
The home depot site does mention only using 1 blade for extended run time. The cross cut blades def use more power
Do you need to hold down both side green levers to keep self propel engaged?
This thing is perfect for my 1/3 lot
Thanks so much for the video. I am also 6’2” and worried that adjusting the bar to the higher setting might mean I walk too close to the mower and kick the bag with my feet when walking. Did you find that at all?
No, I really didn't notice that at all. Thanks for watching.
Great. I ended up purchasing it and it’s been great. I have a few slopes and it’s managed then fine
I'm 6'3 and I do find the bag a little close and I do sometimes kick it but not that bad
Just bought one 2 days ago. really like it
I likes mine to untill i used it a season..thing SUCKS
Love this mower! I live in Florida and take pride in my lawn, cutting St.Augustine Flortam variety which now is thick and plush. Slices through it like butter, Sold all my gas-powered lawn equipment, and went totally electric, This mower and the Ryobi brushless 40-volt attachment system. Silly as it sounds, now I look forward to cutting the lawn
Can the LED light be turned off? I don’t think id want to mow at night anyway lol but no need for it during the day. So if the light can he turned off to avoid it sucking extra juice from the battery even better
Great thorough review man.
How does this compare to the newest Ego Dual Blade mowers?
It doesn't.
Fantastic video- very informative. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
How long does it take for the battery to charge ?
Not as fast as gas! 😏🤣
100 minutes
Very informative review. Thanks much for putting it up!
We appreciate the feedback. Thanks for watching.
one other thing that the operator's manual does not say, and even ryobi support's answer was confusing, ie., didn't answer the question in a way that I could understand.
Excellent work.
