That's a sentences you want to avoid while playing TLD. I learned it the hard way, after losing two run of the Hopeless Rescue challenge, thanks to always getting a Blizzard, and getting lost in it...
@Zaknafein I have to say: I go through tough times in real life (Trouble with family, work, health, mental health and other stuff) and your calmy and relaxed way to speak, and play the game always enlighten my day and life a little bit. So… thank you very much and keep on going.
It's like a walk through and story time. One of the only youtubers I can watch for 4 hours and not get bored or annoyed. Perfect volumes, perfect gameplay.
I feel like weight management is the only thing that doesn't change much between difficulties (from my current trasitioning from Voyager to Interloper experience). I also wanted to thank you for that content. I think I would quit TLD if not for stumbling upon your channel and tips and explanations you give in all videos - and I have fun watching you in general.
weight management happens to be the death of me for most of my runs I find some gear end up carrying too much of that or food, store it somewhere forget where I stored it, get lost in a blizzard and die of either cold or starvation, I've found on my own that a system of safehouses work the best for me where specific areas I will store food or materials and sometimes I'll even do so in cars especially near exits
On the topic of regional bases, keeping a cache of essentials in each area increases your safety. When something goes wrong and you're near to death, maybe you got lost in a blizzard and ended up with hypothermia, or the wind snuffed out your torch just as you happened upon a wolf, etc, you know you just need to make a short hike to a safe place where you can easily spend a day or two recovering. It also makes me feel very clever and prepared.
Zak, you should do a list of the top 10 things you want added in the game. Here are my suggestions: Craft cordage and flour from cattails. Harvest and render fat from bears that can be used in cooking. Cook 'bread' using cattail flour, water, a pot and bear fat. Smoke meat, fish and make jerky. No calories from tea or coffee. Polar bears. Craft a bow drill using cordage and wood - remove ferro rod's and reduce the number of matches in interloper. Craft a slingshot using cordage and leather. Craft makeshift beds from duff (branches) - these beds can deteriorate and cannot be carried. Craft nails from scrap metal.
I think it would be great if you could collect the antlers from the Moose and build a kind of sled with them. One that you can pull behind you for transporting more stuff (would stop you from running though). :)
I think instead of cat tail flour just add flour in game and allow the making of what aussies call damper! It's just flour, water and a fire and it's this dense bread you can make literally on the coals or in a pot. Super filling but not the most nutrients ofc. That would be cool!
Also I'm v surprised there hasn't been the ability to craft a bow drill. Make it take longer than the other fire starters but higher guarantee of starting.

Dont misunderstand this as you being boring, but I just watched you before sleeping for a week straight. Helps me so much to calm down and go to rest :)
After the last video I went to HRV for the first time on stalker. Took some hard hits but still surviving, trying to make it a few days and loot all this good stuff before returning to the comfort of PV and ML. Then I’ll make an attempt at Ash Canyon for the backpack. Found the moose hide satchel at the southern signal fire. Been playing over a year now. But never left my two regions until watching you. Thank you Zak!
Thanks for the scoop on the Milton basin cave. I’ve never seen that. Came in handy over the weekend as I got my moose and it was way easier than staying in the cave between ropes. Love your videos!
Word to the wise. You should always boil as much water as possible every time you have a fire going. Even if you have more than you need, you can always leave it behind for later. Fire is life out here. Don't waste it.
I went out ice fishing on CH and decided to walk back during a blizzard because I thought there weren’t any wolves in blizzards. When I walked back with all my fish to cook I was attacked by a wolf out of nowhere, and after struggling with it (and it spraining both my ankles) 3 more came out of the fog. I ended up lighting a flare but I couldn’t run and so they just stalked me for a bit, then when my flare nearly ran out I decided to bandage my sprains and pop a stim to get off the ice before they killed me. Moral of the story there are still wolves out in a blizzard.
That memento is by the bear cave under the arch. It's a rock cach that blends in really well. And when I go forging I leave my bedroll in the train car and take 1 cooking pot with me for weight. There's a bed at the forge...
I think one of the things that needs to change about caves-dungeons etc is that if there is a hole in the ceiling we should be able to get into the cave-dungeon from it not necessarily from the entrance or exit.
I was thinking about your comment how you playing as you would normally do a 500 day run but still explain things like your walkthroughs. I think I will call this a "Zaksplainer" series.
I'm so glad you went back to Mountain Town in this episode because I made Trappers my main base as well and used the nearby cave to get to Mountain Town and followed your route to get to and set up base at Grey Mothers house. But honestly the cave system was too complicated for me to go back that way lol.
I have seen that as well, but on the NOMAD & ARCHIVIST Challenges. My only guess is that something is spawning/trapped under the terrain. I know wolves can be around the area, so it's possible they leave a carcass, or there's just a corpse you can't access. I have seen s few outdoor places where if you drop an item, it goes through the first layer of snow geometry and you can't pick it up again.
Aren't the feathers just here because there's a human corpse between the 2 structures? 29:58 Not sure it is, but it looks like a pair of legs sticking out of the snow
I'm doing an Archivist run right now, and also making sure to explore areas I've never been to before, so I intentionally went down into the Basin as I never had before. Made it through to FM and that little "cave" but haven't headed out yet as I wanted to get my bearings with an Aurora and see the tower I need for the Buffer Memory. I had NO idea you had to travers another cave to get down lower lol. The game is so well designed!
It is very well designed :) You dont need the cave to access lower levels, though: You can just walk there. There is also a rope anchor to attach a rope.
@@Zaknafein As usual, there are multiple options! Though I do try to avoid climbing ropes whenever I can, sometimes they are still the fastest/safest route. But that's also because I'm always carrying too much lol.
You were talking about match frequency earlier. I don't think the matches are less frequent, but half the guaranteed matches have been moved or removed, so many spawns feel practically hopeless in finding matches.
Never seen anyone play this game who is so against reading to gain faster exp. Especially for cooking, first aid and skinning. The funniest part is when you have 5 hours to kill you say to us "what can i do to kill this time" and then decide to just go to sleep lol.
I’ve always wondered what kind of fruit they grow in these orchards. It’s got to be apples, right? But not even apple could produce fruit in this environment.
I wish we had a Long Dark 2 that takes place in the desert this time. I mean this geomagnetic mumbojumbo is just messing with the electronics its more of a global catastrophe rather than post-apo scenario. The poles get cooler so the equator should get drier, would be a neat thing to up thew game with impelentation of subzero frost but also heatstroke days in the african Savannah community decimated by the lack of water.
I've been thinking about the exact same thing recently.. glad that someone else is also wishing for this.. hot hell in day time, and cold hell in night time.. that would be the ultimate challenge which only "desert" can provide..
Weight management is hard to do for a lot of people (myself included) because you think "well.. what if I need it?". It's best to think about it in terms of Basecamp. You get to a new region, you establish a basecamp. You drop all non-essential gear. Cooking pot, hacksaw, hammer, coal, excess fire starting material, books, most of your food, water, etc leave at basecamp. I try to always keep the knife and hatchet on me (Hatchet for gathering wood when I'm out exploring a region) and knife for harvesting. Weapons, always keep the bow and arrows, and flare gun/flares if you got em. Standard flares, two. Marine Flares (if going to TW territory) two. Sleeping bag, because you need that warmth and you need to be able to sleep and enough food for one-two days. It's too easy to look at the game and think of yourself as a transient, when we should be actively claiming and leaving our presence everywhere. I think safehouse customization will help with this.
After. It was a new run started after the loot table change. I cant tell a difference between the old and the new. Seems the same to me, just different spawns.

I am now able to navigate in a blizzard in Milton, ML and PV. But I always got lost in FM. Even Fog is enough for me to get lost if I try to go to Spencer’s over the railroad. The only way for me to walk through FM is around. Most time I try to go to Spencer’s I ended at Hunters Blind or falling through ice. And I use the maps from the wiki on a second screen. It is disgusting
I think you missed a balaclava under the bed in spencer farms on Milton Or it's the pattern on the carpet that confuses me. Srry If there is no balaclava. Have a good day Zack. :D
Hey, I figured I'd ask for some help here, since you seem to know your stuff. I'm doing a voyager run, and I've started in coastal highway. I've done my forging already (I hit the riiken) but I can't find any maple saplings for the life of me, and I don't know where they tend to spawn. Any suggestions for reliable maple sapling spawns?
Hi Nathanial. In DP, check near the stone church towards the mountain wall. In CH, they are generally in the map edges. Check north of the garage in an area above the trailer, and along the northern road. It can also be in the area north of Rockfall and along the river. If you are really stuck, downloaded Extended Night app and use the maps there.
I'm on my first 500 day run (stalker), having some difficulty with starting to feel monotonous. I love the game but I got so bored I did a 625 hour fire at pensive pond. How do you keep from getting bored with it.
There is always too much to explore and conquer, in addition to personal goals. Even at Day 1000 I never did all of them. In my Discord is a list of activities I had on my old run.
Okay, there must be something I'm doing wrong. Encountering a wolf with torch in hand, I only succeed in spooking it off about half the time by selecting a rock. Is this not the way you're dropping the torch? When I tap right click, I throw it, not drop it. So I hit space, weapon, rock and it auto-drops the torch, but doesn't seem to spook them very often.
Hey, you can run out tw or make a quick fire and than throw torches. The torches have to hit them to decrease the moral. I only want to fight timberwolves on a clear day. :D
Make a campfire and aim rocks or weapon at them. Or toss torches at them from your fire. I’ve also just used a blue flare and a rock to break the pack.
Hi. Check out this video on how to deal with them without weapons. Timestamps included: ruclips.net/video/HnN2ycaXg9c/видео.html Or this one if you want to deal with them with weapons ruclips.net/video/jF0UYdqo76E/видео.html
At 30:16, perhaps there was a animal taken down at that location and or you had hit something which I don't think you may have and it fell in that location. With prior weather during rest or what you were just doing it could have vanished? Looking at the orientation it seems that little wolf in town had a meal but that's just my own opinion.
Not necessary - you get a few more things on lower difficulties, and new regions of course, but primarily the game is still great with or without it :)
How do you get environmental awareness in this game tho? Am I doomed to map out every region when I play blind on my first run? I am saying this because right now when I go outside at night at night or at day in unclear weather I literally move 20 steps away from my camp and I have no clue where I am anymore 😂 it’s literally my #1 cause of death in all of my 6 runs so far
Yes, it is just experience and will come with time. It is perfectly possible to master survival without map knowledge, though. I have done blind runs in new maps a few times and always survived.
Bases are cool and all, but from my voyageur playthrough I find that once I craft some good clothes (and if I'm lucky find good clothes) I'm basically can just move around and explore regions with my ball of condensed carbon and toilet paper; plus with the moose fanny pack I can carry all the clothes needed, my bow, arrows, wood and stuff to hunt and survive. So in interloper you don't have access to guns, hunting knives some of the disgustingly OP non-craftable clothing items and such, but could you not just do the same like on voyageur? I know the world gets friggen cold but that's solvable soo...why have a main base you always go back to? Wouldn't any old cave or shitshack in the woods work?
The base serve two purposes: - Store your stuff - Resupply after a bad event On loper, remember that the most you can recover in one nights sleep is 32%. If you are near death, you need 2-3 days to recover, so having a base helps with that a lot.
technically ur not where we left u. the earth has been rotating around the sun, and spinning on the axis. ........ but i get what i think u were going for. still never assume anything. lol i just finished the last video few hours ago lol. i love this game. but at least for me its hard to watch gameplay. it is slow paced game. yet for some reason at least for me. perfect game to play. still i choose to watch this series so far at least to help learn the maps. and to get better. but at the end of the day i al about it just being a video game and having fun.
Putting in a deathplane in places where you can scale down the wall seems rather cheap. I'd rather they fixed the geometry so you can't walk there anymore.

1. No
2. Yes
3. No
@@Zaknafein Thank you! You're amazing :)
39:27 that applies to real life too... isnt it? :P
Hi zaknafein, thanks for this! Just out of curiosity, are you German?
Norwegian :)
@Zaknafein Oh, okay, I'm sorry. Obviously not great with some accents! 😬
@@Zaknafein I was thinking that just because you sound a bit like henning wehn! 😄
it does not spawn on interloper. best hat you can get is rabbit hat or the red-white canada hat.
What do moose markings look like?
Brown. Like the bark has been removed from the tree
@@Zaknafein thanks so much for the reply, I'll definitely check those spots
I'm on my first 500 day run (stalker), having some difficulty with starting to feel monotonous. I love the game but I got so bored I did a 625 hour fire at pensive pond. How do you keep from getting bored with it.
There is always too much to explore and conquer, in addition to personal goals. Even at Day 1000 I never did all of them. In my Discord is a list of activities I had on my old run.
@@Zaknafein joined the discord, thanks.
Dropping the torch does not reliably scare away the wolf. It is the aiming that scares it away.
hi do you hav any tips fighting timberfolfs i just lost my 88 day interloper all best clothes and bear bedroll im really frustrated
Check out his video on spawning on blackrock!
Timestamps included:

@ 26:40 doesn't Rest As A Resource get removed if you have food poisoning or parasites? I could have sworn it did, even on Interloper.
Food poisoning does, yes. Not parasites. Parasites instead reduce total stamina.
How do u got a knife on interloper? Is it a glitch or?
Yes, glitch
Hype
At 30:16, perhaps there was a animal taken down at that location and or you had hit something which I don't think you may have and it fell in that location. With prior weather during rest or what you were just doing it could have vanished? Looking at the orientation it seems that little wolf in town had a meal but that's just my own opinion.
What is the melody at the beginning?
Its called "Road to 500 days" :) The instrument is ronroco
Do you need the dlcs too or is it not necessery?
Not necessary - you get a few more things on lower difficulties, and new regions of course, but primarily the game is still great with or without it :)
can wolves attack you when your foraging?
Yes
Go outside they said it’s a clear day they said 12:29
Just got eaten by a wolf while cooking at a lit fire. God, I love-hate this game.
Hey zak do you play wintermute
Only once or twice
Oh ok
Why play wintermute if you rock on survival. GO ZAK.
The base serve two purposes:
- Store your stuff
- Resupply after a bad event
On loper, remember that the most you can recover in one nights sleep is 32%. If you are near death, you need 2-3 days to recover, so having a base helps with that a lot.
@@Zaknafein Okiedoke, i shall keep that in mind for more challenging run. However, I think I love Vaughn's Rifle too much.
@@AverageFornaxEnjoyer you can try gunloper :) interloper settings but with firearms enabled if you ever fancy
technically ur not where we left u. the earth has been rotating around the sun, and spinning on the axis. ........ but i get what i think u were going for. still never assume anything. lol
i just finished the last video few hours ago lol. i love this game. but at least for me its hard to watch gameplay. it is slow paced game. yet for some reason at least for me. perfect game to play.
still i choose to watch this series so far at least to help learn the maps. and to get better. but at the end of the day i al about it just being a video game and having fun.
Putting in a deathplane in places where you can scale down the wall seems rather cheap. I'd rather they fixed the geometry so you can't walk there anymore.
When next episodee?
Friday or saturday
