Personnally, if I had to rank the alien movies it would be from best to worst: Alien, Prometheus, Aliens, Alien Covenenant, Alien 3 and the horrible Alien Resurrection. Furthermore, I've noticed that people are heavily biased by their own nostalgia. For instance a lot of people said they liked Alien resurrection on his review but for almost all of them it's just because they're people in their late 20s or early 30s who saw this movie when they were kids. Kinda sad that people are so simple and predicatble.

Ripley even told them not to do it. I don't care that it was traitor Ash that opened the door, the Captain of the ship ignored quarantine to bring into the ship a man with an alien on his face.
      And then he ATE DINNER WITH HIM.

      Also... I've heard many people saying that characters are just down right stupid in this movie and are totally incoherent. I've never had this impression in the first 3 Alien movies were characters were at least decent and definitely not making unbelievably stupid decision one after another.

    I loved the world building, the big picture focus of Prometheus. I didn't mind the absence of Xenomorph or the things that people were expecting from an Alien film. The answer that they were seeking and the journey they made for it, that whole process kept me interested in it.
    While watching Covenant, I missed this aspect of the Prometheus and now I understand why Scott went this way. To bring it in line with originals and to give people what they wanted (Xenomorph) he sacrificed on the bigger picture.
    I can't imagine where the story would have progressed had he not been influenced by the feedback.

I thought they may have corrected it for the final release from the trailer, but nope. The Aliens back tubes still magically go through the floor. I almost walk out the theater.
      The final scene where the Alien walks into the hangar bay, also had a CG error. Might have only been for a second but you could clearly see red lines coming out of the Aliens elbows.

    I facepalmed so hard and so frequently during this movie that I most likely suffered a concussion. To anybody who hasn't seen it: SPOILERS IN COMMENT!
    These people were responsible for colonizing a planet. Did they have absolutely no training or intelligence at all? Let me provide some examples:
    - Let's explore an unknown planet; in camping gear and not space suits or otherwise effective protection *facepalm*
    - Let's by no means react to the fact that this planet has life on it *facepalm*
    - Let's assume a specific plant is wheat, even though Triticum has thousands of very different morphological variations. (And this is an alien planet with millions of unknown plant species). *facepalm*
    - Let's land in water, even though we apparentl know that we have a possibly damaged hull *facepalm*
    - Let's not comment or speculate eagerly that we found signs of intelligent life *facepalm*
    - Let's touch random things on an alien planet for the lols *facepalm*
    - Let's ignore when we start feeling ill within hours on this alien planet, claiming that "everything is fine" *facepalm*
    - Let's call for pick-up to get our sick individuals to the super important, expensive colonization ship immediately *facepalm*
    - Let's lock the sick individual in a room with another healthy person instead of a medically capable android *facepalm*
    - Let's call for help in incoherent screams and cries without informing the colonization ship of any details of the situation *facepalm*
    - Let's crawl when in danger, like in any horror movie, like we suddenly lost all bodily functions *facepalm*
    - Let's shoot in an apparently very highly explosive shuttle with firearms *facepalm*
    - Let's follow the obvious alien sympathizer into a dark room full of eggs, looking at them from a close distance and touching them exploringly *facepalm*
    - Let's get the colonization ship with thousands of lives in it within a very dangerous distance of the planet, risking everything *facepalm*
    - Let's send a pick-up to get people from the planet where everybody died in disease or an otherwise violent gory death within hours *facepalm*
    I could go on forever. SOOOOO many facepalms. My head hurts now, I need to rest. These people are supposed to be colonizers. Nuff said.

      Exactly what I was thinking. I would also add last scenes which made characters even more naive - let's not check if the android is our android... who could sabotage the whole mission, I am just happy that he didn't decide to go back to Earth. Another really annoying, why David access code worked on a very different spaceship? And why there was only one android to take care of such a huge ship, this could be understandable on a small ones, but the massive one carrying over 2000 human beings should have more just in case.
      The plot has a strong potential and with better written characters this movie could have been quite good. I really don't understand how it is possible that they spend so much money on making the movie, but don't pay much attention to do thorough work on believable characters.

    • @LarryLynx
      @LarryLynx 7 лет назад +12

      Oh I can name several more facepalm-moments actually. This was just a few of them to share with you. Such as the moment when they point at a statue in the unknown space-ship, saying "They were huge!"
      ...as if statues are always made the same size as what they represent. *facepalm*
      As you said, the setting and environment had SOOO much potential. They resorted to old clichés and poor characters, which kind of reveals Ridley Scotts intentions; the Alien-franchaise will never be but of memory of what it was. The series is probably dead :/
      Regarding your android facepalm moment: at least I can tolerate that the android fooled them to some extent. They probably have not seen an android changing appearances with another android earlier. It was "deffective" and behaved in a way androids usually don't in that setting, so they didn't expect it. But the access code thing....good point. Hmm... maybe it was on the previous androids hard-drive? But in that case he should have known about the cabin on the lake too....

    • @annabelladonna6511
      @annabelladonna6511 7 лет назад +11

      David code shouldn't work at all. It was even mentioned that those androids were too much human and eccentric, so why some old time android considered potentially unstable can access an entirely different ship with his old code some decade later. That doesn't have any sense.
      I think Daniels checked if it was Walter when she looked at his hand and thanked him for saving her second time, but David already knew that, and when she was in a cryo chamber it was already too late. Anyway after experiencing such a horror and knowing what David was capable of, she should be more careful and double check him.
      Yes the setting was amazing... One good thing is that there are many options for future movies, I just wish they will be better. Well written characters, plots and better music, I think the first two movies were perfect in that regard. For example the scene where they walk via Engineers graveyard, I would love to hear Alien 2 music there, some simple but disturbing sounds, and see more scenes of the place and Engineers, just a little extra tint that would make the movie a great experience. Hey, if you walk between dead foreign species bodies it should be done with a magnificent touch, of something mysterious and monumental. For me Covenant is a bit flat in this regard, a lot of action, not so much mood. But overall scenario is amazing with Engineers and a sabotaging android.

    • @alexandersison2030
      @alexandersison2030 7 лет назад +3

      David wasn't really considered unstable. The Company was simply afraid of losing control of units like him. As for his codes, we don't really know how privvy he was to Peter Weyland's secrets, but both films imply that he was privvy to quite a few. Peter Weyland could have built in certain safeguards that would allow David to take control. I'd also like to point out that we didn't see exactly what he did to Walter and whether he might have extracted further info from him.

    • @annabelladonna6511
      @annabelladonna6511 7 лет назад +2

      Yes, later on I had similar thoughts about it. Do we know from the movie which company owned Covenant? That would explain a lot. David was very close to Weyland and probably also programmed to have similar characteristics, or David learned them directly from him. We also don't know how was he programmed and what truly drives him. We see in the movie that he is making some presumably free decisions, but there may be some deeper programming which started when Weyland died, of which even he can be not aware of.

      I can tell this trilogy/series fassbender is meant to be the protagonist. And its a bit like space oddysee: make the robot more human than the disposable humans so it might be intentional that the other characters are a bit bland so David can be aloof and deep, but its not like in Space Odyssee its more like they made the characters stupider, more superficial intentionally to make the AI dude look better.

    tbh they showed the alien so much i felt no suspense going throughout the movie. they were just monsters and for the most part, its just an action movie. Felt none of the grip and fear that life, for example, had for most parts of the movie.The best part for me personally was that scene when the girl was locked in with the baby xenomorph. That legit felt terrifying. Since they lacked suspense and showed the alien so much, they may as well went further with the gore

    • @Resuarus
      @Resuarus 7 лет назад +19

      I agree so much with this. The movie felt like it was going the right direction until David showed up. It felt suspenseful and terrifying and maybe like it was going to be more of an Alien movie than a sequel to Prometheus. Then it just became Michael Fassbender the movie. After that, it just turned into a suspense-less action film that was surprisingly light on good action sequences.

    • @97javic
      @97javic 7 лет назад +6

      That doesn't make sense. They showed the Alien a little too much to be effectively scary or suspenseful in your opinion so they should have just jumped all the way to the other end of the spectrum and made it an alien slasher film? That's stupid. They showed the Alien just the right amount. Enough to properly enjoy it, but not so much that it ruins the suspense. Not to mention the alien doesn't even come into play until the third act of the film. You're really just not making sense. The movie you're describing wouldn't have worked. The Alien wasn't in it nearly as much as you're making it sound like he was.
      I mean, there's a reason we saw through the alien's point of view in the corridors toward the end. We weren't supposed to see it that frequently, and when we did it was either in a tense action/survival sequence or during suspenseful sequences where we only see him through security cameras and obscured by glass like in the shower scene. Rarely does he get solid screen time, nor should he. Yes, he gets more than the alien in the original film... but that was the original. We've already experienced that tension and suspense, we don't need to experience it again in exactly the same way. I mean really, use your imagination. Stop asking for a retread of old films and appreciate this one's originality.

    • @Resuarus
      @Resuarus 7 лет назад +4

      There's a difference between how much time the alien is in the film and how much time it's on the screen. The original movie was suspenseful, because often-times when the alien was around, it was shown indirectly/not fully. In later parts of the film, it's nearly inescapable. It feels like it's around every corner even though you rarely actually see it.
      Covenant plays it the exact opposite. The new aliens occupy an amazingly small amount of the run-time, considering how much time they are actually shown and times that they are implied to be near but not actually shown (this is almost never, btw). When the new aliens are involved, they are shown nearly completely and usually well-lit. This completely eliminates any mystery about what they might look like, where they are/what they're doing, and who they're about to kill. When the classic xenomorph comes out, it's fully revealed immediately. Almost every shot involving them shows exactly where it is and in its entirety. The scenes that you mentioned from their perspective are even worse. Not only do they reveal exactly where the alien is and what it sees (no humans or anything interesting that will provide suspense because it's trapped in a corridor), but it also destroys any mystery surrounding what/how they see.
      Beyond that, the aliens are almost never in the same shot as humans. For all the screen space they occupy, they usually just wind up shown in jump-cuts between the humans doing something and the alien moving around. All menace is removed because you have a CGI creature that doesn't even really inhabit the same space as the people it's terrorizing. And if you want to talk about how "original" this film is, we get our umpteenth chest bursting scene in the franchise, a crane arm fight that is eerily reminiscent of the power armor fight from Aliens, a plan where they force the alien through corridors by locking bulkheads ripped straight out of Alien, and then they blast out of an airlock into space, which has happened in every main entry except Alien 3. Most original movie ever.

"Come, let us bathe in these alien waters before we test them for microbial life that could kill us!" I picked up Alien Isolation shortly after seeing this in theaters. I went back and watched the original Alien and Aliens. Safe to say, Alien is now one of my favorite horror movies and Isolation is one of my favorite games. Alien, Prometheus and Covenant are my preferred movies of the franchise mainly because they're solely thrillers. Aliens is great, but I'm not a fan of it being more action. This movie was already doomed, when they decided to listen to the complaining "fans". We end up with a mix between Alien, Aliens and Prometheus. Until now, every Alien movie had a theme:
    - Alien: Horror
    - Aliens: Action
    - Alien 3: "Misery, misery, misery... that's what you've chosen"
    - Alien Resurrection: Comedy
    - AVP : "Freddy VS Jason worked, right?"
    - AVP:R : "Maybe it works with stupid teenagers and without... the light?"
    - Alien Covenant : "You know, we're already working on the title for the next one: 'Alien 6', ... does AVP count? So 'Alien 8'? Whatever, just call it 'Alien Isolation'... wha... wait... WHAT!?"
    ...
    "At least we try to be creative, Michael Bay! Wait, how about 'The Last Alien'?"

      I agree completely. If people just allowed Ridley Scott to make a Prometheus 2 instead of complaining about the absence of Xenomorphs we probably would've got something FAR better than Covenant.
      Covenant on the other hand satisfies neither the Prometheus fans or Aliens fans.
      It pisses off the Aliens fans by giving us basically a rehash of Alien (and ruining the Xenos origins. Though they'll probably retreat on that decision) and it pisses off the Prometheus fans by throwing away EVERYTHING the last movie set up.

      The characters are not stupid. They are complacent. Newsflash, real people are normally complacent until they are given a reason to be vigilent. People don't walk arond all day thinking they are facing life or death situations 24/7. What if you lived in Alaska and you went into a store and found a grizzly bear in the store and it kills you. Were you stupid or were you complacent? The Alien characters have to be complacent at the beginning of the film to be realistic. They have no reason to suspect danger. And if they aren't complacent there wouldn't be a movie.

    Chris what happen to your more in depth analysis ??? I was hoping so much more from you when reviewing this especially since you are a fan of alien and aliens. How am I even gonna explain this, the lore man the freaking lore, Ridley has royally fucked the entire lore of the franchise, the timeline is now more confusing than before and it adds a lot of questions instead of answering to any of them.
    1. In alien and aliens you get a hint that the space jockey (engineer) actually the one created the alien species as a bio weapon, a perfect organism and even in Prometheus you can see the ornament on the wall of an alien queen etc (confirming my hypothesis that the engineer created them)
    2. Now David created the alien (spoiler) according to this movie but it doesnt make any sense at all, so he created the egg ??? or does he created the airborne goo that created proto alien too ?? because in Prometheus the goo is not AIRBORNE and even David have to drop the liquid itself inorder to infect someone and even then THE GOO DOES NOT CREATE XENOMORPHS it only infect them and turn them into zombie or something
    3. Does the goo disintegrate organism ? create organism ? or twisted the organism that it ingested to ? doesn't make any fuckin sense at all
    4. I thought the queen is the one responsible on spawning the alien egg not David. It makes no sense even if David created the queen instead of the egg, why ?? see point 1.
    5. The engineer only have 1 planet and in that planet they only have 1 small city ??? I mean we are talking about being that can travel intergalactic and have a technology far beyond man kind, does that sounds a good writing to you ?
    6. fuck explanation on why the engineer wanted to destroy us XD (ask ridley dont ask me man)
    7. Every single character on the covenant is incoherent and stupid, I assume everyone already watched the film so I'm not gonna explain further but if you want comparison go watch "Life" or even "prometheus" itself because the character is even dumber than prometheus.
    8. 70% your entire crew is death and you won't even wake up a second team ? hellooo you got 2000 people onboard they can't be the only crew/team to manage the ship, not to mention the dumbass mcbride endangering the entire ship by going on low orbit.
    9. The timeline between covenant and first alien is 18 years (alienanthology.wikia.com/wiki/Alien_Universe_Timeline) and the derelict ship on lv 426 that ripley found is brought by the engineer full of xenos egg, and it has been there for ages because the space jockey got molded into the chair that is how long it is and now david are the one creating them ?? whuat ?? (my head about to explode right now) did david flew that ship too ?? but the pilot is a space jockey O_O........
    10. Ridley completely forget the franchise that he is making and the lore behind it
    11. I would rate this movie D instead of B, because interm of suspense, horor and gore it's bad, I can guess almost all of the plot and they took the worse decision that you can think off, where is the horor ?? (you already knew the outcome).

      I think there could have been two ways that that happened. Either:
      1. David sympathized with the other android and decided to continue his mission.
      OR
      2. They swapped faces.
      I like option 2.

    • @Kinoksis
      @Kinoksis 7 лет назад +8

      Addison Knies
      *more spoilers*
      I guess it's most likely that David swapped bodies with Walter, although there's no example in the franchise of androids doing that, and it's hard to believe that he could just tranfer minds in such a short amount of time.
      My second theory is that David just chopped is hand to pretend he's Walter, but the screw Daniels used to pierce his chin is gone and David is unable to heal from wounds like Walter. It's very confusing.
      And why would he help the crew kill the xenomorph in the Covenant ship, wasn't his creation of utmost importance? So many plotholes man.

    I think the best option for the franchise now, is to go as low budget as possble. Horror movies make a TON of money, because they get made on incredibly low budgets of 10 to 15 million when compared to covenants 150+ million. The genre is too niche for budgets that high. No more spanning vistas or giant set pieces, as gorgeous as they are. My proposed idea If they were to do a Covenant sequel would be to keep the movie ON the Covenant, just like the original spent almost the entire movie on one ship. Hear me out. The ship is relatively large, it has 2000 colonists on it, a rogue synthetic and at least 2 aliens. We saw during covenant that the Alien was somewhat disobedient when it tried to attack David through the monitor, so have something go wrong during one of his experiments and have the two (or possibly more) aliens break free and cause havoc. A handful of the colonists wake up somehow, the Aliens are on the loose stalking the vents and hallways and David is among the colonists trying to be Walter and remain hidden until he becomes a protagonist at the end. It's contained, it's claustrophobic, It's dark, it's scary, it's Alien.

    God dammit people need to stop naming the chestbursters xenomorphs. Xenomorph was first used by Lt Gorman in Aliens, and it translates to alien form (or other/strange form), Gorman was a weak leader who thought using a fancy word would elevate him above his soldiers. Even Frost had to ask what he meant by xenomorph, and then Hicks, good sport as he is, interrupts and "saves" Gorman by saying it's a bug hunt. So we are actually calling these creatures what the idiot Gorman wants us to call them. The real name of the species almost all people call xenomorph is actually xx121, or xenomorph xx121 to not be confused with anything living on earth. Alien form xx121. Calling the chestbursters xenomorph is like naming all living creatures on earth oxygen breathers.

    Rarely do I deem it necessary to express my opinion when it concerns the primitive entertainment of this backwards era. My quest to locate the Celestial Madonna in this period does not allow for much leisure but as the popular saying of this age states: "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." After viewing this particular criticism of a forgotten form of media, however, I feel I must make my presence known in this time period. This motion picture you refer to is an interesting paradox that confounds me. While an impressive technical achievement as far as the images, sound, and production design are concerned, I have witnessed more human behavior and motivations present in the actions of the the mindless automatons that maintain the biofurnaces fueling my chronal transport. You, Stuckmann, profess to have a knowledge of the nuances of this era's cinematic efforts, yet you announce for all to see and hear that you enjoyed being subjected to this, this, MADNESS! Humans who appear to be mentally incapable of logic stumbling through a series of progressively more ridiculous and contrived occurrences towards their unavoidable deaths is not entertaining. It is infuriating. From what I understand, this Ridley Scott is an accomplished auteur with many critical and commercial successes. Foolish primitives! Do you not recognize the ineptness which he wields? This sad, old man is desperately grasping for the glory experienced in days gone by revisiting his past triumphs in a foolish attempt to expand upon what he "created". Pitiful. Once I have found the Celestial Madonna and dealt with the troublesome Avengers, this affront to intelligence will never have existed!

      It being bad was assumed the minute Disney went for the sympathy play, claiming hackers are holding us hostage. Considering the movie was not released after the ransom was not paid, it seems quite likely to be a pathetic attempt for free publicity, for a movie that is about to get panned. When that happens, I expect Disney will "leak" the movie themselves, blame the hackers, and cry to their investors about ticket sales and those "damned pirates".

    I'll have to say that Alien Isolation the video game story line and feel should be cannon with the first two films and it pisses me that they make this stupid ass robot the creator of the Xenomorph how does the derelict ship end up on LV-426 with thousands of eggs the space jockey pilot chest was blown out he was fossilized for thousands of years and in Prometheus the Xenomorph portrait is on the wall in the engineer temple bunker so....I refuse to except the fact that David is the creator of the Xenomorph and also this really fucks the Aliens movie storyline with the queen too

    • @alexandersison2030
      @alexandersison2030 7 лет назад

      Could be the murals did not depict Xenomorphs but Protomorphs and Nemorphs, like the one that appeared at the very end of Prometheus and similar to those first two creatures in Alien: Covenant. The Derelict Ship is tricky, but it could be that the Alien eggs and the burst chest from the Engineer in the Derelict were two different events. Something else could have burst from him like a Protomorph long before, and David could have brought the Alien Queen there at some point. Remember, we never really found out who activated the beacon on the Derelict Ship. Could be that it was David who set that trap to lure in other colonists. As far as I know, Alien Isolation is canon to the first two films as of now. It's been referenced by all of the other recent tie-in comics and novels, so I don't see why not.

      i dont know everything but i do think its safe to say David is not the creator of the xenomorph... there was a mural of xenomorphs inside the engineers ship in the movie prometheus so they been around before David.

    Did we watch the same movie Chris? AC is a complete mess. Yes it does look good, but that does not matter one bit when the story is so absurd and the characters are so dumb. I was too upset to enjoy the visuals. Sure there were good moments here and there, but this is Ridley Scott so one has to expect a lot more. If you are going to do another Alien movie at least have a killer script and a top cast. This was so disapointing. RC did a George Lucas. So sad.....

    • @seanmills7586
      @seanmills7586 5 лет назад +1

      @NorthernLight Lol this exactly! it takes all the suspense and wonder away, and ambiguity is very powerful to use in film if done right. Look at the George Romero trilogy of dead films, the zombie origins are never explained. The characters can only watch and wonder as their world is slowly destroyed by the undead.. and now romero's son wants to make a prequel that explains where the undead came from... just why. Apparently directors seek to destroy all great storylines today lol and David is annoying in this movie with his conceitedness and apathy (i know he is a robot but still)

    • @eh8484
      @eh8484 5 лет назад +1

      NorthernLights couldn’t agree more, it was by far the laziest and dumbest alien of the franchise. Everything, even the script. For instance, the idea of this mysterious creature, dark color, almost camouflaging with the dark environment of these movies, hardly ever appearing, and this movie just shows you the freaking thing from all different angles. Then these pseudo scientists again, holy mother, what lazy writing. Fassbender carries everything on his own LITERALLY. Those scenes of him and himself talking were the best and most tense ones as well. That final karate-like fight though was pathetic, dumb, I felt the urge to leave the cinema right away.

    There were a lot of things I did not like about this movie, but the big dealbreakers were:
    1) Most of the characters were disposable with zero personality, so I did not care when they died. In prior Alien movies, I did actually care of someone died, even if I didn’t like them.
    2) So much of the plot momentum relies on characters being frustratingly stupid. Maybe don’t remove your helmet and then inhale the flowers on a planet you know nothing about. Maybe don’t follow the stranger who has a shrine to the things that are killing you. Maybe really don’t follow him into a single-exit cave. MAYBE DON’T STICK YOUR FACE NEAR SOMETHING WHEN HE SAYS TRUST ME. When the writing has to rely on characters being this stupid, perhaps another draft is in order. It wasn’t even “curiosity leading to bad consequences”; the characters just behaved in ways that left me annoyed that no one had even mild critical thinking skills.
    That said, I really enjoyed the visuals and Michael Fassbender’s performance. He honestly deserves far more recognition for his skills as an actor.

    apart from the few major flaws, I loved the connections to prometheus. one thing we know now is that the engineers were excited to see the humans but then got killed, so I'm thinking that there was a war between the engineers (for and against humans) and the good ones eventually won, but then David kills them all. I LOVE David in this movie and I can't wait to see what comes next

    Wow I'm shocked that he actually liked the performances because I personally thought the acting was scarier than the movie itself, the only characters I actually cared about in this film were the aliens lol, the characters had no life to them at all and I found it depressing that this film actually came from Ridley Scott, the original Alien was truly a masterpiece and while I had problems with Prometheus it at least had ambition, good performances, intriguing ideas, and made me think but this film was literally on par with AVP which is not good, nothing more than a cheesy monster movie with stupid characters who line up for the slaughter and offers nothing more than that.

    When he said Danny McBride was good in a serious role in this movie, I audibly laughed because I was so caught off guard by that. Is this a thing McBride does now? Am I the only one who thought his single style of acting was the Kenny Powers style of saying fuck it/blow some shit up? If he's graduated from that and started accepting more dramatic roles since the last time I checked in on him in This is the End, then good for him.

      Zach Bush McBride is stepping away from his norm and getting into more horror type projects. he is involved with The Predator movie for 2018 and the new Halloween film which John Carpenter has said nothing but good things about the pitch McBride and the director gave. Definitely seems as though he has a bright future in the genre.

    In the soundtrack, 'Chest Burster' is perfection.
    Naturally, all film viewers attach themselves emotionally into a story or situation by tethering their emotions to that of a character they can relate. In this case, that would typically be the person being killed by the chest burster... But Jed/Ridley truly had a moment of brilliant vision when they constructed this tune for this situation because the tune itself instantly took the fear out of the scene and put all viewers into the mind, not of the person being killed but into the character who set everything in motion. The character was watching his 'child' being born and this piece of music forced all viewers to focus on that and it's beauty, rather than the gore, which one would think couldn't be overmatched. Yet another demonstration of the power of music. Amazing. Surprising. Beautiful.
