  • One of the big discussions about Atlus rerelease practices has come up again with SMTV Vengeance getting announced. So I decided to invite Crystaahhl back on the podcast to talk about this practice.

If anyone ever wanted to complain about an atlus rerelease, every single rerelease atlus has ever done before SMTVV would've been the best time. This is the one and only time, it looks to be worth it.

I know, funny how they never have problems when it is a Persona game but the minute we finally get something else....

I agree, but to be fair every re-release has sort of been justified up until now, with only Royal being kinda sussy. If you think about FES, that came at a discount in the original and was in the west kinda the only version we had. Persona 3 Portable was on a whole different console, same with Golden, so they weren't really re-releases as much as they were just...ports with extra content (like vengeance, to a certain extent).
Let's go back even farther, SMT3 Maniax edition. At that time re-releases were the norm in Japan because DLC didn't really exist, and the west only got the "complete" version anyways. SMT4 didn't have a re-release, it had an entire different game that was released (whose quality is disputed but it wasn't a re-release).
I think Reload is the critical juncture here. If IT gets a re-release and has no option to just buy the answer as DLC or buy FeMC as DLC...I think that is the straw that's gonna break the camels back on this issue.

So, spencer, I am a new listener to the podcast and maybe it's on me, but I feel like there should be some sort of timestamps or general notes as to what you wish to discuss with your co-host. I am clicking on this and hearing you talk about re-birth about 1/3 of the way through and that is not something I consent to because I cannot play rebirth, I don't have a PS5 and I don't want to hear ANYTHING about it until I can properly hear about it.
If you wish to cover a certain topic or know that it is included in your talk with a guest, please at least mark it out in some way so that I can know what to skip if I do not want to hear about it. It has also been 40 minutes and not a peep about the main topic, I feel like if I want to hear about it there should be a way for me to jump TO the main topic because that is what I clicked the video for.
I hope you don't take any offense, this is my honest critique as a new listener. I love SMT and I am sure a lot of people enjoy you just talking with your co-host/guest but I also am here for the SMT portion of it, not FF, not Zero Escape, not anything else.

As a quick note, the Japanese titles of the Yakuza games have actually had subtitles for a while. They decided to maintain it for Yakuza 6 and then never again, for some reason. 8 is actually the first mainline Ryu Ga Gotoku title to be completely without a subtitle in a while.

Crystaahhl's favorite FEs are the Tellius games? One more W on the pile. Her taste continues to be perfect.

SMT5 V is the one re-release I feel should have happened.

I would love a complete redo of Soul Hackers 2. I would love to change the combat to press turn, add nuclear and psychic elements, have both human and demon characters in combat, human characters have set skills as they level with 2 bonus ones they get from equipping demons, demons get some other boons since they can't equip accessories/demons. Also have multiple story paths, different final bosses/endings, and better/new dungeon designs.

This isn't me being an Atlus stan because the company is trash fr but I think Vengeance might be the only rerelease I really don't mind at all (Record Breaker would be the other but it came out too soon). 60 hours is a full game, people just don't really think or act like that's the case because of how many recent games are 100+ hours long, and because the Vengeance route is its own thing with the original added onto it, I honestly am okay with it.
I also recognize the rerelease pattern IS bad, but I also appreciate how Atlus still handles them, like they all have quality of life features and bonuses that show they genuinely care about the products they make in spite of a lot of bad business decisions, for example Apocalypse only exists because it started as a IV rerelease, but they realized they wouldn't be able to flesh out everything they wanted if they didn't make a brand new story instead, and what we got was some of the best SMT gameplay ever.

In this age of the last of us getting Re-releases every year I don't mind getting more game 3 years later. These games would be 60-70 dollars on consoles even if they were just a port. In the case of atlus they at least give a reason for you to buy it again other than "looks better"

If atlus just keeping re-releasing the game that make the first day version useless , then i will simply stop buying their games first game. No reason to do so afterall

@renhardhalim I don't plan to pick up at all. At least not giving atlus any money. Maybe if they drop the game in game pass or getting a key in some place , but not giving atlus directly any money.
