    That Edward VIII plate is interesting. Someone probably threw it out when he abdicated to marry Mrs Simpson.

    • @ericalbany
      @ericalbany 5 лет назад +1

      That plate was never supposed to be issued because the coronation never happened, but of course since there were thousands of pieces they made it out to the public quietly.

    • @pattimessenger6214
      @pattimessenger6214 5 лет назад +2

      Isn’t it funny that he had to abdicate to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee with two living ex-husbands, yet they welcome Mrs Prince Harry, an American divorcee with one living ex-husband.

    • @grendelgrendelsson5493
      @grendelgrendelsson5493 5 лет назад +3

      @@pattimessenger6214 Attitudes were so different in those days. My dad's mum divorced my granddad not long after the abdication and I only ever saw my granddad twice; once around 1965 and then around 1970. It wasn't until around 1989 that I found out that he had an identical twin. Strange how things were.

    Ms Lucy I found your finds fasanating.. I think that it is amusing our GREAT GREAT GREAT GRANDPARENTS used our water ways as dumps & toilets. Now we are cleaning up this garbage or treasures of the past. All over the world humans did & do this. IN the USA we only find 200 years of glass pot pans.. Mostly Native American artifacts. In ENGLAND YOU HAVE CENTURIES of treasures.. GOD'S BLESSINGS FROM INDIANA USA

    Nice Smirnoff bottle., as well as the tomato paste bottle. The little handle with the blue pattern on it wins a special place in my heart though. : ) Sort of a wild and wicked looking pipe you found there, maybe a bit rare. I figure the way you find tobacco pipes over there is the equivalent to the way the detectorists and relic hunters in the US finding civil war bullets. Chill Bill once commented to the fact that we find so many bullets in America. Never thought much about it until then. Love the stoppers. I have a small collection of glass bottle stops. Enjoying the sound of you sloshing through the stream in your tall galoshes. The sound has a soothing effect. I agree (broach). Please give us any added info you have on the clay pipe, Lucy. Thanks : )

    Hi Lucy. The metal plate that looks like an oval washer with added slits is part of a clip that was used to `button down' the hoods and tonneau covers on old sports cars (think of pre-war MGs for example) and was also used to hold the hoods on some perambulators in days gone by. The plate that you have is only part of a clip and is a back plate. There would have been a front plate similar to it and the hood material was sandwiched between them and held by bend-over metal tongues that went through the hood material and through the slits in the plate. There were several plates on a hood of course. On the body of the car were protruding studs over which the plates were pushed (through the hole in the plate) thus holding the hood in place.

    From Wikipedia: “The coronation of Edward VIII as King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth and as Emperor of India was due to take place at Westminster Abbey on 12 May 1937. Preparations had already begun and souvenirs were on sale when he abdicated on 11 December 1936.” A cracking find, Lucy! Like other posters, I wonder if it was tossed whole, out of disgust, when he chose to abdicate.

    Is lovely to have the little journeys, as the Somerset countryside is looking especially gorgeous this year - makes me think we ought to go to Bath when we're home next month, but I doubt we'll have the time. How cool was that pipe, although gives me the willys!! I'd have to hide him at the back, but I've never seen one like that, let alone complete, so probably a really good find. The oval metal piece is the back of a bag closure. The front part would have four "tounges" reaching through the leather. You would then put on the back piece that you found and bend the tongues at 90 degrees to secure the closure.

    Wow, what fabulous finds! The coronation plate of Edward who abdicated before he really got started , kinda of scary faced whole clay pipe! The round vulcanite bottle stoppers are The old ones and the other one is the new style that could be put in bottles by machines so shows the industrial progression. Great stuff. Thanks.

    Hi Lucy Edward 8 abdicated the throne so he could marry Mrs Simpson was the official story. The unofficial story was he was forced to abdicate due to a lot of bad behaviour. His brother George 5 was the opposite George was well respected for a lot of good behaviour. i think the oval thing is half of a grommet for a convertible top for an antique car

He swishes the water soundly to stir the stuff up and the current washes it away. Then the stuff at the bottom is easier to see. I wonder if that would work for y’all.
