My favorite scene from Xanadu. It’s a shame the song wasn’t featured more throughout the film but it was No. 1 for four weeks in a row back in 1980. Rest in Power, Olivia Newton-John.
Most people find this movie ridiculous. Are you kidding me? I find it great!!!!! Being an (self-proclaimed) animation junkie, the animation sequence is a bonus for me. Over all, I LOVE IT! Heck, I don't even exist during that time
This whole music based love story is amazing (not just the great never to be repeated soundtrack)- but just the fact that it was perfectly written and cinematography was spot on etc. Perfect for 1980s...
Xanadu is a campy yet profound movie about a man's muse ,his art, rollerskating, track lighting, painted vans and a cross generational love story about two men from different eras. One man is from the jazz age and the other man from the new wave era .The rock guy and the old man are trying to fulfill their dreams by investing in a club together .Olivia looked pretty in this movie and it has a great soundtrack by ELO and the special effects are very cool for that time period especially the transitioning frame noise s and effects in a lot of the dance montages.Everyone has to watch Xanadu once just to experience this cult classic.Magic is a cool track that was popular at that time and this was the golden era for Olivia Newton John.I think everyone liked Olivia Newton John back then and still does today as a singer, actress, and overall pretty blonde woman.Xanadu is an imaginative surreal late seventies campy cool film that everyone should watch.
Xanadu is one of my favorite movies and Olivia and ELO are two of my favorite singers. If they ever remade it I think the perfect people to play Kira and Sonny would be Julianne Hough and Mark Ballas.Julianne did a fantastic job as Sandy in Grease Live. Her and Mark are two of the only people I think could come close to being right for this movie.
Agree with most of your positive comments and sentiments, but a just couple corrections. The soundtrack was not just ELO, John Farrar wrote half the songs, and of course none of the major hit songs or the movie would be the same without Olivia's "Magic" voice and her stellar beauty. Oh lastly this movie was filmed in the latter part of 1979, and released August 8th, 1980, so it's NOT a 70's movie. AND Olivia's golden years went far past this....Physical was to come at the end of 1981 to 1982 (#1 for TEN weeks, and the biggest hit of the entire 80's), and then 8 big hits to follow that. She only slowed down at the end of 1985 because she got married and had a baby...and back then misogyny was extreme, and goodness forbid a women have a career as well as be a sex symbol while being a married mother. ;) BTW this is all said with respect and peace. Was just setting the record straight. I run an Olivia fan page on Facebook titled The History Of Olivia Newton-John, check it out sometime, interesting and fun. :) Xanadu is one of my all time favorite movies and the album is my ALL time favorite Soundtrack. :)
Blasphemy! A classic like that should NEVER be touched nor remade! And Julianne Hough is NO Olivia Newton-John by any stretch of the imagination. They did a horrific job in the TV version of GREASE! It was painful! Another classic that should not be touched! Peace! :)
+Jillian Taylor Even though the movie was released in 1980 it was still a "70's movie" because it has DISCO written all over it and the 70's were the decade for that. The writing and project planning and such had been done in that decade, so its style was influenced by the decade. tl;dr: Don't take the date so literal ...
My older sister was OBSESSED with this movie when we were kids....as a result I had to take disco skate lessons with her down at the local skating rink....mom made me. I was 5-6 years old, I had little choice. 15 years later....I met my wife, who was also a huge Olivia Newton John fan when she was little. Grease is still one of favorite sing along albums on long drives, haha.

You do feel it has something about it that whispers to you that there is more than we think in this crazy world and that there is magic waiting for us on the other side.
That's true, OMG. I remembered my mom when she was about to die and I used to tell her mommy who sings because I used to play her the song Magic And she said Olivia. I really love this song
Love Xanadu, but my only gripe is that the song that not only was a hit but had lyrics so essential to the plot was used as a casual background piece, rather than given prominence. What should have happened was it should have been instrumental in this scene as a prelude, and then he maybe should have had a dream sequence after leaving where she sings it whole, thus explaining her presence in his life.
I loved the movie---but the old guy and the "fusion" of the club was just a dead end for the story. I wish they'd have gone more down the "greek mythology" angle and incorporated more of sonny/kira or something. Other than that...her music and look as amazing. Sorry to hear of her passing. =(
I remembered my mom when she was about to die and I used to tell her mommy who sings because I used to play her the song Magic And she said Olivia. I really love this song...She is Magic

I found something deep inside myself to keep going and somehow this movie helped me do that. I still get chills hearing this song - it feels like some sort of magical possibilities are floating through the air and I’m home.
Muse meets man. Man meets run-down art deco building and has-been bandleader. Together they create paradise... or rather a roller disco!! When so many things are wrong those sentences and yet still make a magical movie!!! Weird. Wonderful.

@@cocokudo They actually played this movie version of this song during 1980-81 on regular old over the air radio stations for a time, (without Beck talking) in a lot of major metro markets, I remember hearing it on top 40 stations quite a bit then, after 1981 it disappeared from the air forever. I actually like this version better, because it is a bit haunting and interesting too.
cinematically speaking, the movie was horrible. the soundtrack is what makes me watch it every few years. Olivia Newton John was at her most beautiful here.
Of course, this was the post-credits scene where Swan left The Warriors and joined up with The Punks! The Punks couldn't fight for shit, but Swan liked that they were always on skates!
John Lennon asked a friend to do him a favour and go and buy him this single in New York......he said he wanted it for inspiration for songs on his new album.
Unfortunately, I have never been able to find this version of the song, specifically one that includes the instrumental beginning at 3:08 in this clip. Been looking for many years.
Video games started becoming popular during this time. Pinball machines were also in the skating rinks and so I think they had two options and then they installed the video games. I think video game consoles in the home started to kill skating rinks. I can barely remember those times when I was a little kid.
When I was in elementary school, we had skating parties once a month, and they were awesome! Some coworkers and I have talked about having a skating party for work, and people could bring their kids and grandkids. Then the pandemic hit, so we'll have to wait a while longer...
When we were kids my cousin and I would get in screaming fights about whether Olivia Newton John was a ghost or a goddess in this movie. I was in camp goddess, and it really bothered me the idea that she might have been a lady who died. But watching it again as an adult there is a lot of evidence for my cousin's case lol.
It is actually the Muses from Greek Mythology. In total there are 9 muses and Olivia Newton John is Tepsicore, the muse of dance ^-^. They were somehow related to the god Apollo because he is the god of music (the arts) , poetry, prophechy, medicine, archery and the sun and also he is the twin brother of Artemis 🌙.
She was a muse, one of nine, child of Zeus and Mnemosyne. Each one inspired a specific facet in the "arts." They are Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia, and Urania. I became a wee bit obsessed with muses - and Greek Mythology - after seeing this movie. ☺
I honestly kinda really like this movie. It’s kinda stupid, but some part of it is still good! Not to mention I’ll take anything with Olivia Newton John’s Magic in it.
what more can ya ask for...a struggling artist gets inspiration from one of Zeus's daughters...set to the background of ELO and...gulp...Olivia...the perfect storm. This was a mesmerizing film to me. Oh and hey...one of the background dancers (muses) was non other than Sandal Bergman..aka Valeria from Conan the Barbarian. I mean c'monnn!
What a shame that the Pan Pacific Auditorium is now gone. It had to be one of the coolest Art Deco style buildings I have ever seen. In its 50 year or so life span it saw a lot of action. Shown here in 1980, near the end of its life, it was looking pretty tired. How cool would it have been for someone with money to come in and revamp the entire original building. Even though it's gone it would be even cooler if somebody rebuilt it to the exact specs and had concerts there....Jeff Lynne's ELO could be the first concert guest....
@fixeverything4u I agree, sadly here in the USA people just don't care about historical (modern time period) buildings for the most part, this place has loads of character, and it was eventually forgotten and in time people didn't care whether it was destroyed.
Didnt see much of her on tv but saw her on 'Greese' and was hooked. couldnt wait to see this when I was 12 because she was in it. Olivia Newton John was my fantasy
The original soundtrack LP is divided into two parts, with the A-side labelled "ONJ side" (songs by John Farrar) and the B-side labelled "ELO side" (songs by Jeff Lynne). First album I ever bought, age 10. Olivia Newton John used to suggest just watching the musical numbers for those who can't stand the dialogue.
The INCREDIBLE sound effects while Olivia is skating: -swoosh! swoosh! swoosh! swoosh! -VERRRY TRIPPY -mesmerizing -on another wavelength -space age -transcending -otherworldly -interplanetary Wish I could replace my muffler with this sound So Hot
My favorite scene from Xanadu. It’s a shame the song wasn’t featured more throughout the film but it was No. 1 for four weeks in a row back in 1980. Rest in Power, Olivia Newton-John.

The simple message of this is that we must believe in magic.
Magic is the basis of what we are.
I believe that magic is love
💕
How can this movie be so ridiculous yet so magical?
Because it's magic...the movie is ridiculous,,but the thought behind it is...?
Premise + Music + Olivia > Reality.
excellent question. with the neon, old band, roller skating, and muses, the writer had to be high when he came up with the idea for the movie.
well they used a resources of that time to create a such of fantasy musical movie without some software to do effects...so that is so magical in this time.
Shows what the power of a killer soundtrack was able to do. Soundtracks seem to have gone the way of the VCR.

😢
My favorite movie as a kid, love Xanadu and Olivia so gorgeous. ;D
totally agree my favorite movie of all time:)
I totally agree...
Agreed as well!!
This movie was and will always be the quintessence of magic on screen..... oodles of chemistry between Olivia Newton-John and Michael Beck ♡
what really sucks is that I can't find THIS version of the song (it sounds more magical with the violin tone)
😭😭😭
Michael Beck was a FAR better actor than anyone has ever given him credit for!
I agree!
He was great in the NBC miniseries Celebrity.
I loved him, he was excellent in the Warriors.

I hate most Oscars
The Oscars have a long history of giving the award to the most forgettable song of the year. Anyone remember The Slipper and The Rose today?

My mum named me after olivas character, and when Sonny repeats her name in this scene my heart beats a little out of control haha.
That's lovely 😊
I was just wondering how many little girls were named after her. Have you met anymore?

I had such a crush on ONJ
When we were kids my cousin and I would get in screaming fights about whether Olivia Newton John was a ghost or a goddess in this movie. I was in camp goddess, and it really bothered me the idea that she might have been a lady who died. But watching it again as an adult there is a lot of evidence for my cousin's case lol.
She was neither. She was one of the muses from mythology. Greek or Roman, I can't remember which.
Well I realize that now, but six year olds don't have ancient greek mythology for context.
Okay, that is a bit young to know about all that.
I will always love this movie and the music
I honestly kinda really like this movie. It’s kinda stupid, but some part of it is still good! Not to mention I’ll take anything with Olivia Newton John’s Magic in it.
Oh fucking Swan!!!
a movie burned deep into my psyche. Magic is simply something else..
I followed beautiful short haired brunette to her locker in 1983🥰
ahh the old Pan Pacific Auditorium. Sad it's gone.
RIP ONJ 🌹🌹🌹
what more can ya ask for...a struggling artist gets inspiration from one of Zeus's daughters...set to the background of ELO and...gulp...Olivia...the perfect storm. This was a mesmerizing film to me. Oh and hey...one of the background dancers (muses) was non other than Sandal Bergman..aka Valeria from Conan the Barbarian. I mean c'monnn!
Kira, or as we know her in mythology…Terpsichore.
"It's too coincidental" @ 2:50
But it's no accident Sonny, she came from earth for you! It's fate, it's destiny, it's love!
RIP beautiful angel..
Loved this movie. RIP Oliva you were a muse to me.
Her real name is Terpsichore.
yes, the muse of dance, muses are suppose to inspire people, to break out of the mundane and express their creativity.
My favorite childhood movie i saw at theater w my mom who split 2 yrs later .
I thought he did pretty good on roller skates too.
You.
Me.
olivia! this is so beautiful i watched it everyday on tv that it was on
Rest In Paradise Olivia Newton John 🙏🏿🙏🏿
That's a great song! RIP Olivia.
Why is this guy traveling around on roller skates?
If you lived in Cali in that time, everyone (mostly teenagers) rode and carried skates or skateboards. Way faster than walking!
That's true things were safer back then I'm pretty sure they skate in Cal even now.
When I have happy dreams I don't fly... I roller skate! 😍
@fixeverything4u
I agree, sadly here in the USA people just don't care about historical (modern time period) buildings for the most part, this place has loads of character, and it was eventually forgotten and in time people didn't care whether it was destroyed.
I love this to it was great even the movie
Didnt see much of her on tv but saw her on 'Greese' and was hooked. couldnt wait to see this when I was 12 because she was in it.
Olivia Newton John was my fantasy
i love the moive xanadu
I never met my Muse, but if this what it feels like, she should be closer than expected.
I wish I met mine too
The original soundtrack LP is divided into two parts, with the A-side labelled "ONJ side" (songs by John Farrar) and the B-side labelled "ELO side" (songs by Jeff Lynne). First album I ever bought, age 10.
Olivia Newton John used to suggest just watching the musical numbers for those who can't stand the dialogue.
I love this part of the movie, so SEXAY, epic surreal, overwhelming
God I LOVE IT!!!!
The INCREDIBLE sound effects while Olivia is skating:
-swoosh! swoosh! swoosh! swoosh!
-VERRRY TRIPPY
-mesmerizing
-on another wavelength
-space age
-transcending
-otherworldly
-interplanetary
Wish I could replace my muffler with this sound
So Hot
Holy crap one of the Warriors was in this
RIP Olivia Newton John.. have to believe we are magic, nothing can stand in our way!❤️💔
Rip Olivia …. All the magics will be around you now …. Miss you
I want to learn how to rollerskate
Gosh, I miss Olivia so much :(
