    Struggling artist Sonny Malone (Michael Beck) is trapped in a dull job painting album covers. Visiting the auditorium where the cover was shot, Sonny finds the mysterious beauty, an ageless Greek muse, who encourages him to team up with old-fashioned Danny McGuire (Gene Kelly) to build a roller-skating disco.

    Just for a moment, imagine how long it must have taken to paint the Muses' "glow" onto each frame...BY HAND! This film was released in 1980, meaning well before the emergence of CGI. I remember reading a special fan magazine for the film in which there was an article detailing how this particular scene was filmed...and that is how they achieved the effects.

    • @jsl151850b
      @jsl151850b 3 года назад +14

      Citation needed. I want to read that magazine article. Can you remember the name of that magazine?
      It can't have been by hand (That's Rotoscoping). They performed in front of a blue or green screen to produce a matte (silhouette) and the glow was made from
      the boundary between the light and dark areas. When one dancer passes in front of another there's no boundary there to glow because they're BOTH in front of the screen.

    • @OreadNYC
      @OreadNYC 3 года назад +14

      @jsl151850b Apologies, but I cannot remember the name of the company which published this magazine or specifically what it was called. My guess is that if there any any copies still in existence, they're either in the hands of collectors or (even more likely) hidden away and forgotten in an attic or basement somewhere.
      I'm aware that the scene with the Muses was created using a blue screen -- this was also covered in the article. In fact, each one of the Muses had to be filmed *individually* in front of the blue screen in order to pull off the effect of the painted version becoming the live-action version. For obvious reasons, once they were "off the wall", the dancers no longer needed to be filmed individually. However, I distinctly remember the article stating that the "glow" was added in after the filming and was not a result of the filming. To whatever degree that it was the result of rotoscoping, the artist only had to draw a frame around each dancer's body. I think the most likely reason why they didn't draw the glow around any parts of the bodies crossing those of another dancer is because that would have made the visuals too messy.
      Let me direct your attention to 3:39 in which we see Kira approaching Sonny for the first time with a yellow glow surrounding her (I imagine that the reason why the glow was pink before and is now yellow is one of those questions we're not supposed to ask!) This shot is obviously not in front of a blue screen and therefore it cannot be what you implied -- it can only have been hand-drawn around her in every frame.

I wanted so bad to have a collection of dresses like Kira and the muses. As an adult, I own the soundtrack and VHS. I remember they screened this at the Billy Wilder Theater in Westwood for the 30th anniversary and I went to see it...I had this song played at the beginning of my wedding reception while everyone was being seated.

      At least as I interpreted it, the Muses are goddesses of inspiration...and it's difficult to either inspire other or be inspired yourself when you're feeling ambivalent or depressed or tired. They're probably excited to have an opportunity to fulfill the purpose for which they were created...especially since Kira's reaction when she's released from the mural suggests that she and her sisters actually don't get to be corporeal very often.

    Definitely the most underrated music sound track of any movie. All concerned were at the top of their game, even Gene Kelly and show any other movie ever made when the biggest group of the day had FIVE hit songs in it.

    • @havensmm9308
      @havensmm9308 Год назад

      Are you speaking about "Saturday Night Fever" when the Bee Gees had tons of hits on that soundtrack? For the movie "Xanadu", ELO had nothing to do with the songs "Magic" and "Suddenly" - both big hits for Olivia Newton-John and both written and produced by her longtime record producer and songwriter, John Farrar.

    • @murrayleewilson0755
      @murrayleewilson0755 Год назад

      @Haven SMM Umn, no. There were four hits from both Saturday Night Fever and Grease and both movies, had their share of turkeys. Xanadu had five and would have had more if not for the critics as every song from it was good but then again, E.L.O. and OlIvia had five songs each.
      Olivia was also the number one artist for movie hit songs being the main singer in both Grease and Xanadu as well as in five other movies.
      She also had history's biggest selling song with "Physical" which was only overtaken by "Thriller".

    • @havensmm9308
      @havensmm9308 Год назад

      @@murrayleewilson0755 Okay, I thought you were talking about one group having 5 songs from one Soundtrack and that would be the Bee Gees, since there were 5 singles from Saturday Night Fever and all were written and produced by the Bee Gees. The first 4 all went to #1 and I guess it depends if you consider “More Than a Woman” a hit.
      How Deep is Your Love
      Stayin’ Alive
      Night Fever
      If I Can’t Have You
      More Than a Woman
      Yes, Xanadu had 5 hits, but only 3 were written and produced by ELO. The other two were written and produced by John Farrar. I am very familiar with Olivia's discography. And as much as I love ONJ and her huge hit "Physical" which spent 10 weeks at number 1, it was not history's biggest selling song, nor was it overtaken by Thriller. Off the Thriller album, Beat It and Billie Jean were much bigger selling hit songs. Actually "You're the One That I Want" is listed as one of the best selling songs of all time.

    • @marcisikoff
      @marcisikoff Год назад

      @@murrayleewilson0755 The soundtrack was also part of their orginal plan what with the 80s take on a Big Band Musical movie. That said the sountrack was to be split 60/40 for ONJ and ELO which is mostly true with ELO having 4 songs, and ONJ 6 but Dancin' definitely had the Tubes playing 1/2 of that mashup but is credited to ONJ.

    • @murrayleewilson0755
      @murrayleewilson0755 Год назад

      @marcisikoff I see. Actually, as good as Iluvia and E.L.O. were, I think that there is one other band that would have been brilliant for songs in a movie like these ones and that would be K.C. And The Sunshine Band.
      For this movie, E.L.O. was still the best pick because I think that they're the best band at singing a song with other artists but K.C. And The Sunshine Band would still be brilliant at both more up-tempo, fun songs and the slower, more serious ones such as their later hit, Please Don't Go.
      It's such a shame that their songs weren't on the one movie the same way. The Bee Gees were credited with making disco popular but that's wrong.
      What really made disco explode was K.C. And The Sunshine Band's song, "That's The Way. People went absolutely crazy over that song, largely because of it's opening, Joyful line but also because of the rhythmic, canting style disco beat.
      The Bee Gees first semi disco song, I don't consider it disco actually, was their song "Jive Talking" which came just before.
      Up until then, you still had some song's such as "Born To Be Alive" but people's reaction to "That's The Way" was just crazy. Everyone just lived the opening and they couldn't help chanting along with the "That's the way. Un huh uh huh lyrics
      Catchy doesn't begin to say it, more like driven. The only other song that I've ever seen that got people going so much was Blondie's "Heart Of Glass.

    I still have wonderful memories of this movie and this takes me back to a better, innocent time. It would have done better had it come right on the heels of Grease, but I suppose it did (movies took forever to get made back then). By 1980, disco was dying/dead, but rollerskating was still huge and our roller rink was a bit like Xanadu. I will never understand the people who despise a movie about love and dreams. There's so much to like in this movie -- always has been one of my guilty pleasures. And Olivia was smoking hot in this movie -- and so were the Muses.
    Sandahl Bergman dancing at 1:58 still gets my blood boiling every time I see her. Just an amazing, talented woman in her own right. I wish she had done more movies. As the one professional/competitive dancer in this clip, you can see how she inspires and leads the other models.

    • @SteveBonario
      @SteveBonario 2 года назад

      There are many reasons to love Xanadu (Olivia, ELO, the Soundtrack, the innocence at its heart), but it is a disaster as a film. The script and storyline are poorly developed. A director and editor can do wonders with limited material and just didn't in this case. The script writers and director had no idea how to develop a character-driven narrative (whereas Grease had a simple narrative that also delivered memorable characterizations and songs, by comparison). The 2007-8 Broadway musical satire did a much better job of telling the story by adding "villain" muses and making the whole thing a celebration of the disco-fied Greek mythology.
      Don't get me wrong, I love a lot about Xanadu -- I have listened to the Xanadu soundtrack and its songs regularly since its release (I have the vinyl, cassette, CD, and even a 45 single of Magic) -- but it is a painful film to sit through whenever Olivia is *not* on screen singing.
