Growing up I had an Akita and I can confirm that they are so insanely loyal to family, she was the best dog ever. I've seen this movie a few times whenever I need a good cry because I will absolutely always cry and be an absolute mess no matter what. Hachi reminds me so much of my dog and it just hits so hard. Fond memories and I miss her, but so happy that I have those memories to look back on. I always tell people that claim to not cry at movies, that if you don't cry for this movie you do not have human emotions.

I have 2 Akitas, and I back everything you just said, 100%.
They bond so closely, and my boy is the main star of my RUclips Channel. I take him with me everywhere that I can, that allows dogs. We are like peas and carrots, lol!
As great as Akitas are, they do have some drawbacks. First is the shedding. Second is that they tend to be naturally dominant, front of the pack type of dogs. This means that they're more than willing to put down other dogs whose energy they don't like and find disrespectful. They're also very independent and difficult to train. They have their own ideas on how things should be done. Takes a lot of work!

To explain a few things about dogs:
-most dogs will instinctively chase a ball (its getting them to bring it back to you thats the trick), some dogs have no interest in chasing a ball
-dogs thrive on schedules, they learn when and what happens throughout a day, my dog used to understand when my mum would order a takeaway over the phone for example.
-a dog will bond with everyone in a family but will choose one person they absolutely respect as they view them as their parent.

you have to use tomato juice to get rid of skunk smell. Their spray is potent. I can't really describe the smell, thought I have smelled many from a distance. If you ever visit the US and smell something extremely pungent while driving about that you can't explain, chances are someone hit or startled a skunk nearby.

Lost my Akita "Chi" last October and few months later I lost "Kilo". Kilo couldn't handle the loss of Chi. Our family has been morning quite a while. I've always had Akitas. Got them from an Akita rescue in Virginia Beach, VA. I miss my girl and my boy very much. Akitas are so loyal and loving.
    RAINBOW BRIDGE POEM
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks Mary, for reacting and enjoy this film. And the story it’s self. It’s ok to feel something for those we dont even know even an animal is deserving of the compassion we have in us all. A true human isn’t afraid of being vulnerable and allows them selves to feel what’s meant to be felt.

Skunks smell somewhere between a burnt rubber kinda smell, poo and tar mixed together to make a potent stank. They were bathing in tomato juice. The acid in the tomato’s helps rid the scent. It’s not a fun thing. Skunks are actually very cute and pretty shy.

The score composer of this movie (Jan A. P. Kaczmarek) passed away a few weeks ago. He had a knack for great compositions in emotional movies. He won an Oscar for the Johnny Depp movie FINDING NEVERLAND (2004), which you cannot miss.

10 years for a dog is equivalent to 70 years for people. Hachi waited for his first owner for almost his entire life. How many people in the world today can do that?

I don't believe there are "dog people" or "cat people", there's just people who have affection for animals, and we're more familiar with one or another.
I'm not a cat person but if i saw a stray cat that needed help I'd attempt to help anyway i could

Same here. I always thought of myself as a dog person. I grew up with dogs. Many years later, I found myself looking out for a feral kitten. We became buddies. We couldn’t have pets at my apartment and I later saved him from being trapped. That’s when I realized I loved all kinds of animals. I took him to my girlfriend’s apartment where he ended up living 19 years with her, very spoiled and very loved.

Haven’t been able to make it thru this film start to finish. As newlyweds we had a Chow til 16 yrs old then a Shar Pei for 14 yrs. Asian dogs do have strong personalities and you grow very attached. It’s so hard to lose them. You want that final scene to be true. You seemed to have understood that; thank you Mary. Great reaction.

Finding Neverland is one of the few that made me emotional, although timing may have played a role because I lost a close family member just weeks prior to watching it and it hit me hard. Same music composer as Hachi incidentally (Jan A. P. Kaczmarek, who sadly passed away recently).

Technically, Bates is a supporting actress. The main stars are Mary-Louise Parker and Mary Stuart Masterson. Bates and Tandy are more of bookends and catalysts for the telling of the main story,

Nice Mary. Glad you delved into this criminally under watched & relatively unknown movie based on a famous real life story from Japan. This is one of the best films for a Dog or Cat lover you can watch. You didn’t have to worry about connecting with it as a self-proclaimed dog person. If you’re a decent human with some emotion & a heart, you can connect with it, but if you’re a Dog Lover or even a Cat Nut it’ll reinforce your love for them even more & it will hit much harder afterwards. If you’re a pet parent then you’ll likely end up hugging your dog or cat a little harder & longer after the movie ends.
I grew up a dog lover & while I thought cats were cool it never crossed my mind to adopt one for some odd reason. After the Army though, I fell in love with my roommate’s cat & then got two of my own. I didn’t even realize that I wanted & needed to adopt cats. So I am a full blown fanatical Cat Dad & Dog Nut. You don’t have to be exclusively a Cat Person or Dog Person. In fact, I love rabbits, chipmunks & squirrels too. My first cat named Chip was a black domestic short hair who was the sweetest, most affectionate & cutest boy. I love all cats (and dogs) but have a soft spot for black cats. Then I added to the family with Calvin, a Norwegian Forest Cat who had a white, gray, & tan mix of fur. Sadly, I lost my two boys a few months apart last year which absolutely floored me. I am still grieving but will adopt their future siblings soon as a homage to them & because I cannot imagine a life without furry pals. Now I am a crazy obsessed Cat Daddy who cannot imagine a life without Kittehs or Doggos
Cats & dogs are gifts to humanity. They bring us endless love, laughs & pure joy. They weave domestic gold into our lives. They are internet rockstars because they are cute, huggable & make us happy. What’s better than a cat’s face nuzzle or zoomie across the floor? What’s better than puppy’s eyes or a wagging tail? What’s better than your furry pals waiting for you to return home? What’s better than waking up with little furry heat pads sleeping beside you making it hard to get out of bed. Nothing. They make us better. If you see someone who is a cat &/or dog lover the odds are they’re a kind & decent person. So if you’re making a new friend or dating someone, I think it’s a huge green flag if they have pets or are a pet lover.
I watched Haichi with my ex-GF who was a vet tech & cat & rabbit Mom. Both of us were balling watching Haichi. It’s one of the most potent tear jerkers there is but in a good way. If you don’t cry from this movie, then you’re a heartless & soulless sociopath who lacks emotion. Actually, it’d probably be a pretty infallible sociopath test. I’m a yankee New Yorker but my heritage is half-Japanese & half-English. My Mom is from Japan. I asked her if she knew about Haichiko, & she replied “Of course stupid, everyone in Japan knows the story of Haichiko.” This is why I believe that most Pet Parents, not all, are good & decent people. They make us happy & keep is grounded. To me it’s a huge green flag if you’re a Cat or Dog Nut.
    🐱 + 🐶 ABSOLUTELY RULE!🙂👍
    PET PARENTS TOTALLY ROCK!😇👊🤟
