The Oklahoma-Texas rivalry, known as the “Red River Shootout” is one of the most intense rivalries in American sports. I’d rank it in the top 3, along with Alabama-Auburn, the “Iron Bowl” and Michigan-Ohio State, “The Game”.

It's a neutral site at the Texas State Fair; each campus (Austin & Norman) are about equidistant from the game. That's about 92,000 fans, split equally at the 50-yard line with Oklahoma at the south (right of the broadcast) and Texas at the North. There are thousands outside also watching on big screens. You can just make out the Burnt Orange vs Crimson & Cream colors split at the 50. They take turns as Home team so Texas is home this year, and Oklahoma will be next year. Home team gets to bring their sponsored recruits on official visits, but not the "visitor." So next year Oklahoma will have recruits. The Red River separates the two states, thus the name of the game. Texas and A&M haven't played since 2011, while Texas and Oklahoma play every year and have met 118 times. This rivalry will continue next year as they both move to the SEC.

The game is always held the week of the Texas state fair which is going on outside the stadium complete with ferris wheels, games and more food than should be legal. It takes place at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas Texas in the middle of the Texas State Fair (not to be confused with the Cotton Bowl Classic, which is the name of a post season game held at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas). The game has been played there every year with no interruptions since the 1930s. Fans are split 50/50 down the 50 yard line. It is almost always crazy and unpredictable, upsets are very common.

Another tidbit of trivia that adds to this game: someone mentioned the overall win/loss record of the series (63-51 & ties). But, since 1955 (and before last Saturday) the record was 33-33-3. Yep. Totally dead even (level???). With the win by the Sooners it is now 34-33-3… again, since 1955. The game is different from ANY OTHER rivalry in that the stadium is split 50-50 along the 50-yard line, and, basically 100,000 fans plunked down into the middle of the largest state fair in the United States; rides and fried food literally steps away from every gate to the stadium! The rivalry is so strong that either coach could probably renew his contract with their university just by winning this game, even if they lose the rest of the games that year. Lose this game in a contract renewal year, you just might not have your job next year. So the pressure and stakes can be high.
Dallas wins just by hosting this game. Fans of the losing team sadly enjoy the State Fair the rest of the day and night (Saturday) before traveling home while fans of the winning team boast at the State Fair and Dallas the rest of the weekend (Sunday) before heading home.
That’s an extra night of profits for the hotel the winning team and richest fans stay at.
Whenever the contract is up for renewal to host this game at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, the City of Dallas pays both teams a significant amount of money to be the host. The Universities get paid money to use the Cotton Bowl instead of their own huge stadiums on alternate years. On the last renewal, the Cotton Bowl was expanded to encircle the entire upper deck (bowl) and added suites for VIP supporters.
The best plays of this game was the goal line stand by the OU defense. 4plays after a first and goal on the one yard line was awesome team play.

Back in 2004 I was deployed to Iraq along side a Texas unit. There were many Longhorn fans in that unit and as the annual OU-Texas game came up the Commanding General issued an order that no one would flash the "Horns" sign. It seems that the horns sign in the Middle East is a sign for the Devil - which to my Sooner mind seems about right.

The Cotton Bowl, The House that Doak Built
"...Until the forties the stadium seated a little more than 46,000 patrons on redwood bleachers, which were adequate until Doak Walker became a sophomore All-American and undefeated SMU appeared in its first Cotton Bowl Classic in 1948. SMU started playing its home games in the Cotton Bowl later that year."
"The versatile Walker, who also punted, returned punts and kickoffs, and kicked extra points, earned All-America honors in 1947, 1948 and 1949. After starting as a freshman in 1945, he missed the 1946 season due to his service in the Army; however, by his junior season, his exploits on the field had become legendary, and in 1948, Walker won the Heisman Trophy.
Because of extraordinary fan interest in Walker, who led the Mustangs to Southwest Conference championships and Cotton Bowl appearances during the 1947 and 1948 seasons, SMU moved its home football games from campus to an expanded Cotton Bowl. The Cotton Bowl recognized Walker's achievements with a plaque at its main entrance that reads: 'The Cotton Bowl, the House that Doak Built.'"
      Time magazine, 1947:
"Four years ago, when rangy Bobby Layne and trim Doak Walker played in the same backfield at Dallas' Highland Park high school, they were inseparable cronies. Then Bobby went to Texas and Doak to Southern Methodist. Last week, each an All-America candidate on an unbeaten team, the two pals sailed into one another before a full house in Dallas' Cotton Bowl. It was the game the Southwest had waited for all season.
At 20, Doak Walker is the younger by a year and not quite so famous as pass-throwing Bobby. But on the opening kickoff, 175-lb. Quarterback Walker took the ball, shrewdly smuggled it to a teammate who galloped 84 yards, almost for a touchdown. A Walker pass and a short run made it, and Walker kicked the extra point. Bobby, who plays only on offense, wasn't even in the game yet.
When he did get in, Quarterback Layne apparently forgot in the pinches that he had one of the most valuable throwing arms in college football. He tried smacking through the rough, tough S.M.U. line. The few times a Texas ballcarrier shook into the clear, Doak Walker, who played the full 60 minutes, was there to help nail him. After four quarters of even-Stephen play, it was sandy-haired Doak Walker's kicking toe that made the difference. S.M.U. won, 14 to 13, and after the game fans carried both Layne and Walker off the field. The game dumped Texas (rated No. 3 in the U.S.) from a narrowing list of unbeaten, untied teams. The top three:
¶ Top-ranked Notre Dame couldn't get its running attack going against Navy, but didn't need to; its two pass-pitching quarterbacks-Johnny Lujack and Frank Tripucka-completed 18 passes in 27 attempts, sank the Middies, 27 to 0.
¶ Michigan's hocus-pocus offense worked well enough to hurdle hardy Illinois, 14 to 7, thanks largely to nifty, shifty Halfback Bump Elliott, and a pass by Bob Chappuis (TIME, Nov. 3) that set up the game-winning touchdown.
¶ Southern California, which hadn't beaten Washington on Washington's home ground in 15 years, went to Seattle and whipped the jinx by a 19-to-0 score, thereby moving one notch closer to the Rose Bowl."

The "Red" River in Texas has much history and legends attached to its name, forming the Texas/Oklahoma border for much of its length.
....The University of Georgia vs. The University of Florida annual rivalry is split in the stadium. One half of the stadium is orange (Florida fans), the other half is red (Georgia fans).
...The game is played at a neutral site, Jacksonville, Florida, every year-- usually in early November.
...The 1980 game (Run Lindsay!) was the greatest.
....The historic nickname of the game is "The World's Largest Cocktail Party".

This is originally called the Red River Shootout.
But they changed it because of the word Shootout for sensitivity reasons, despite announcers still commonly using the word in football games. 🙄
Some of us still only refer to it as the Shootout.. And we mock those who try to call it the Red River Rivalry, because 90% people get their tongue twisted trying to say it.
Side note: The Red River is what separates Oklahoma from Texas. Hence the name.

1:02 Daz, it's a "redshirt" you're thinking of. It's when the player sits out the season and not waste any of the 4 years of college eligibility. It's always the coach/program to select the players to redshirt for the season. A kid coming out of high school can use this season to get stronger, develop technical skills, and simply get used to being in college. You can also get a medical redshirt if you suffer a season ending injury.

@newrimhoops387 OU-Texas and OSU-Michigan are two of the five most intense rivalries in college football, but I'd say OU-Texas is bigger than OSU-Michigan. OU-Texas is played on a neutral field every single year and the game used to ostensibly be a contest for superiority between two different conferences: the Big 8 and the SWC. It also takes place at the Texas State Fair. OU-Texas is basically a bowl game in October; there is really nothing else like it.
The only rivalries I would put on the same level with OU-Texas in terms of both historical and present interest on a national level are Notre Dame-USC and Army-Navy, with Army-Navy being a special case for obvious reasons. Alabama-Auburn is also very intense, but that is because it simply features two football-obsessed schools in a football-mad state. There are of course many other rivalries, some of which have already faded into history, but there are only a precious few that have been as engrossing and bitter as OU-Texas is.
