Many African Americans feel uncomfiortable if they are told that they have Mexican or any other Latino ancestry. Neither do many African Americans like their kids getting romantically involved with Latinos because they feel that it threatens to dilute their African American culture.

Thank you for posting this video! There is SO MUCH about the histories & cultures of People of Color that isn't taught in schools. We have to learn it on our own. This is made easier because of RUclips videos such as this one. I added this video & 3 more to a post entitled Black Mexicans & Black Peruvians on my pancocojams blog. The purpose of that blog is to increase awareness of African American & other Black cultures.
    Thanks again!

I first learned of Afro-Mexicans from a Mexican-Amereican friend of mine over 10 years ago. I saw the exhibit at the Mexican American Museam in Chicago a few years back. As a Black American I found it truly fascinating. However , when I shared this with a friend of mine who was born in Mexico City, she denied the very existance of Afro Mexicans, in fact , she stopped talking to me afterwards. Fascinating.

Mix in with the few who would accept them. That is an understatement. They were welcomed by the indigenous who saw the same treatment they were being submitted to by the Spaniards. The natives were not racist to begin with. On the other hand, the Spaniards started to mix with both African and Indigenous women VERY VERY soon.

I am black from America, but I speak Spanish very well and when i do I get this look that is like, how do you know my language? and first thing they ask are are you dominican or cuban? I always say no, but it always made me wonder why wouldnt they ask if I was Mexican? But then I started to think, how difficult is it for black Mexicans to be accepted, because they do not fit the stereotypical look of a Mexican.

Sonora shows the highest European contribution (70.63%) and Guerrero the lowest (51.98%). In Guerrero one also observes the highest Asian contribution (37.17%). African contribution ranges from 2.8% in Sonora to 11.13% in Veracruz. 80% of the Mexican population was classed as mestizo (Amerindian-Spanish). [30]

That is true, my husband family comes from el Mellado Guanajuato, a town were blacks slaves were brought to work in the mines. I was able to trace their lineage and quite frankly it is obvious just by looking at them, unfortunately, they don't realize it. I intend to talk about that, and the heroic Pipila, who also came from the same town and they change the subject. You have to understand that our government did not include our black history in the books, so we don't see ourselves as blacks.

+Isaac Hunter Here is tge thing..., Spaniards mixed with blacks, indigenius mixed with blacks, spaniards mixed with indigenius, then, when we got our independence we mixed even mother every body with everybody, so some some people don't look like blacks but they have their DNA, the Spaniards didn't have laws like in the U.S.A, I mean the Blood line, that's why african american from the U.S , look more pure, and the whites too, the English colonizers brouth their full falimy members, like with familys, and tge spaniars where conquers, who where all soldiers mens, they didn't brought their wifes and their childrens, so they started to mixed with black women and indigenius, I read that on a history book.

I agree with you, but Hispanic refers to any person who speaks the Spanish language. Please, let's stop lumping ourselves with every other spanish speaking people, if you mean latino, this is indicative of all those whose language derives from Latin, which further alienates us, because it includes the Italians, the French, Portuguese, and the Romanians.

My parents are from the costa Chica, better known as Africa mexicana; I don't considered my self black because my skin not black my hair is but not my skin. My bro is actually black skin and he consider himself black, he has all the features: big lips, 6'2 height, and great muscle tone, is not by choice is the just true aspect! Some of those pics are of indigenous black natives of the various tribes (Aztecs, etc) who were already there when the white Spaniards arrived. You can tell the people who are obviously Negro vs the dark natives; the Aztecas don't have afros but they are black (all people of color descend from Adam but there are still distinct family trees of black people: Shem's and Kham's descendants). You can't group all dark people in the same category; there were ALREADY dark-skinned natives there.

What this guy is saying is old His-Story,the truth is that there has been Africans in Mexico and all the Americas for over 100,000 years

  • @caraqueno
    @caraqueno 9 лет назад +16

I was last in Mexico in 1983. I lived in Cuernavaca, south of Mexico City, for 6 weeks. I remember seeing a busload of black people coming into Cuernavaca from the south. I realized that they were Mexicans from the coast near Acapulco.
There is the unfortunate racism among Mexican- and Latino-Americans, generally, that has been layered over by American racism towards accepting the African contribution to the culture, food, and ancestry of the region.
To Wiseup69 and George Hernandez: Blacks didn't contribute anything to the independence movement, culture, and food of Mexico and play an insignificant role in Mexico. Really? Yes, you could travel throughout much of Mexico and, maybe, see more people with indigenous or European features but, look carefully, you will also see African features in them, too, but racism clouds your view and puts a filter on it. Go to coastal Veracruz, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, if you don't see any Mexicans of African descent.
Also, the eminent anthropologist and sociologist, Gonzalo Aguirre Beltran, exhaustively researched birth records of colonial and early republican Mexico. He accurately concluded that, as of 1940, 40% of all Mexicans had a black African ancestor.
Because African Mexicans blended into the population and didn't have massive infusions of slaves in the late 18th Century as Brazil, Cuba, and the Caribbean in general had, it was easier for Mexicans of African descent to "hide in plain sight" and not suffer the indignities and brutalities that slaves endured.
Unlike slavery in the U. S., the child of a slave and non-slave was legally the race of the non-slave parent, thereby, legally mestizo and white. Also, non-Mexicans take the word "mestizo" too literally. Mestizo means any mixture of races. In today's Latin America, it is a term to mean racial mixtures, generally, not simply a mixture of indigenous and European.
Yes, it does hurt (being of Mexican descent myself) to see my fellow Mexican-Americans denigrate and dismiss outright the existence or the importance of Africans in the history of Mexico. That's dismissing themselves. They have to look at why they are so frightened and dismissive of African presence in Mexican society.
By the way, check out the cuisines of Veracruz, Guerrero, Oaxaca, of coastal Mexico generally, and you see the infusions and recipes of West African ingredients and cooking techniques. They just don't make your local El Torito or El Pollo Loco here or in many other Mexican restaurants (most owned by Mexican-Americans of northern or west-central Mexican origin, areas that had the least African presence in Mexico).

I support blacks, native americans, and any minority being oppressed, however, genetically native americans are more related to asians, and just recently have some of them received white and black influences. Of course humans originated in Africa, and all humans descend from africans. Evolution has not stopped, and blacks turned whites in Europe, yellow in Asia, and brown (red) in America. But the first inhabitants of America were immigrants from Asia who turned brown. Yes we are the human race.

It is believed, amongst other theories, that in time many different groups of Asians entered thorough Bering Strait, some could have been darker Asians as well. There was a wide range of ethnic minorities with very different traits and shapes in America. Some Asian tribes could have kept their dark skin since they left Africa, and kept their lineage until coming to America; like aboriginal Australians and some Pacific Islanders, that could have sailes across the Pacific to the South of America.

It really is sad to hear my people (Mexican-Americans) sound so ignorant on some of these posts. The ignorance to accept documented history is crazy. What is even more disturbing is reading all the post degrading black people, especially when we are degrading in similar fashion. Mexicans are combination of ethnicities anyway, so what are we really saying here by calling people the n-word. Grow up, stop being racist, and educate yourself...

How can you call their hand labor insignificant? The states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, Veracruz, and Coahuila have counted afro descendants but there are more states with unknown numbers. Unique last names such as: Moreno, Crespo, Pardo, and believe it or not Prieto were given to black Mexicans. Independence contribution? How about José María Morelos y Pavón & Vicente Guerrero Lázaro Cárdenas? Food? Menudo and Moronga come from the west of Africa, tripe pepper soup but in MX corn was added.

I have lived in guanajato and am studied in native thoughts and spiritual practices. My grandfathers were both veterans of the revolution, we don't need you to tell us a history well documented. Why did the black disappear from Mexico but not Colombia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico etc.? Because, the presence of the African American in Mexico

Cuando digo "integrate them into the mainstream of the culture" indico claramente que la integración es física y cultural.

@TheLastMexicatl,maybe..."maybe",not before like you said, but, after the arrival, and together with the spanish conquers, they started to come to current Mexico (then the viceroyalty "Nueva España",until 1821) for hundres of thousads (about 250 000,in according to the last researchings) between 1519-1800,or something, you know?
But,they all (africans blacks) for various different reasons, could not be integrated as a distinct racial group, and "VISIBLE" from the rest of the Mexican population.
