oh Valve, you and your default textures.
That's a dev texture, the default texture for Half-Life 2 is a brick floor texture.

Gotta love how that massive train was halted by a single oil drum.

I've got a neat little fact about how citizens react to certain chain of events I discovered in Garry's Mod.
Normally if there's no action going on, citizens will have pretty neutral and serious facial expressions, but if they hear gunfire in the distance, their facial expressions will start to look anxious and worried. I'm not sure I've ever noticed this in regular Half-Life 2. It'd be worth testing.
Something else I discovered is that newspaper located on both white and blue van texture sheets contains a very crusty picture of a valve on it.
You can spot it inside the back of pretty much every single van, with the exception of the reddish-orange van from Episode 1.
Also, sometimes, if a friendly dies, their face will get angry. They also have a set of default expressions that are choosed when they spawn.
@@KingMetalMario My favorite female citizen, 01, has a cool raised eyebrow animation lol
This is a neat detail! I hope he sees this. The Lambda was always kinda cute to me. Like a manufacturing logo in this universe.
Also the same vans started to not have collision in the back, so the door that is sometimes not there can be walked through I believe.
I remember there is a radiohead logo on the steering wheel of a van in episode 1. It may be in the van you get in with Alyx for dog to throw across the chasm.
Now we all have to go and try clicking on the HL2 titles. That one seems like an April fool's joke!
1:57 - That trick was in Black Mesa, it was patched out because you could accidentally blast friendlies when you pulled it out. Very hilarious though to do it unintentionally.
i actually discovered the second fact on accident at the fork that leads to the zombie dead end in route kanal . was super confused when nobody was attacking me but even moreso when i was suddenly ripped through a portal in space back to the ladder lmao
3:28 fast zombies once again proving that they're the lost souls of hl2
Once again? What were the other cases?
_clicking on the logo in the menu will make it disappear_
Wait, what?
This is a bug that was there since Source 2013, it doesnt happen back then.
@@megakarlachofficial How did they accidentally write code that makes something disappear when clicked?
@@omphya6229 if i had to guess i'd say maybe its the same code that makes the menu options go dark when you click them and it's just mistakenly treating the logo as a button too
@@Eira_ Maybe, that is a dumb reason but also the most likely reason.
even more stupid, pre anniversary hl1's logo being clicked makes all the buttons disappear then reappear one by one. dont know if it still happens now tho
6:05 Train: *Can knock a buggy off a bridge with no problem.*
also...
*Gets stuck on a barrel.*
Gordon be like "Need RPG at all costs"
5:43 I learnt of this one recently. A RUclipsr called Mapocolops did a blind playthrough of HL2. He didn't kill that soldier and I was fully expecting him to be shot at but it never happened. Now I know why.
TRAIN STUCK TRAIN STUCK
I guess the GTA5 train is built better :P
Not sure if this has already been covered, but in the first chapter of HL2 if you can pick up the can sitting on the trash bin before the infamous "pick up that can" cop completes his animation and then throw it at him in the same moment, he won't attack you. He'll just stand there and repeat his lines, and the only way to get past him is through noclip or crouch-jumping over him.
"Pick up my script"
you can jump on the trash can and then on top of the cops head and crouch through them to avoid picking up the can entirely which interestingly makes the cop angry and chase after you
I think in that fire clip at 5:10, it's not the fire that hurts you, but the burnt ground textured Displacement that it's sitting on. That would explain why you didn't take damage while standing next to the fence, because the fence has it's own raised platform you stood on. Haven't tested this though.
It probably a fire trigger that just doesn’t extend to there
Displacements can't possibly be set to damage anything, the thing that damages you is a trigger box.
A map won't compile if a displacement is tied to an entity. Displacements cannot have any functionality
@@nnikitov57 I would check in Hammer but I don't have anything ready on this computer. Let's just assume it is a low trigger brush then, idk.
4:35 probably it's because it is a menu refresh button. I mean in Half life and CS 1.6 steam version you have got that button at down below at quit. When you press it menu elements refresh and it is also a text logo of game. So since Valve can not put logos into panoramic bg maps and appeal like normal texts so they used that refresh button then rewrote it and implanted as a game logo text. Impressive and simple.
is it also because if you change resolution, the logo can scale properly without coming out wonky to the wrong aspect ratio? so they just implented like a vector logo?
fun fact: if you'd manage to get get tha barrel unstuck at the end it would behave the same as the pickaxe in episode 2 I found out myself and haven't seen anyone do it anywhere even though you can have a lot of fun with it especially because it works even with the train at the start of route canal
ah yes source physics doing its best 7:06
The main menu thing, I think I know this one.
Its because the logo in the main menu is technically a button, just like Start Game, Load Game, ect, using the HL2 font and scaled up and not programmed to do anything. If you were to look in the code for the main menu you'd probably find a random ascii character above the UI code, which would correspond to a wingdings-esque placement that would turn into the HALF-LIFE 2 symbol when loaded.
You can find the main menu title screen logos in the font file included in the game, along with the HUD and weapon icons.
going with what you mentioned about the shotgun, i think you should talk about how absolutely no weapon in hl2 will remember how much ammo was in its magazine if you swap to another weapon and reload it. im not 100% sure exactly how it works but ive noticed sometimes guns will seem to "forget" my ammo count when i swap. this appears to hold over into hl2dm as well
You mean autoreload when put away? that's an intentional feature
There's a console command to turn autoreload off
That's a feature that was also expanded for TF2 called autoreload.
@@beetheimmortal I don't think TF2 has off hand reload. The autoreload in TF2 is just that if you're not in combat, you will reload the gun you're holding
@@KingMetalMario I know, that's why I said "expanded", because it doesn't happen in the background in TF2. TF2 also doesn't stop you from firing during a reload animation either, if I remember correctly, although it's been a few years since I played.
Has the logo thing always happened or is it just one of the hundreds of unexplained bugs introduced with the Steampipe update?
Just checked an old 2004-ish version, and it's not the case there.
Altough it might have something to do with the fact that it's a russian pirated copy I got in 2005.
its probably leftover from something. Like you can click the logos in goldsrc games
5:45 that soldier also has unique ability to fire weapon at infinite range and has unlimited range vision.
In gmod if you change his weapon to a shotgun he will fire the weapon at long range (normally npc don't shoot them at long range)
(I do be curious if there's any way to apply this effect in any human npc.)
the soldier probably has a "Long visibility/shoot" Flag set
I can't believe the functionality of Clickable Logos got kept from Goldsrc…
2:29 you can do the same thing in lost coast
4:22 all light fixtures in this map have dev textures lol
damn Alyx really be flexing with her invisible keyboard
That vort be like: what u doin here
4:16 this combine soldier is a descendant of the cops in GTAV who let you finish ordering a soda before they kill you.

6:45 Stopping the train, something every GTA player has dreamed of
How do you even find some of this stuff?
2000+ hours in half life 2
HOW am i still learning more about this game
Thanks for the cool videos pinsplash.
1:56 technically this can happen to any weapons if you left them unloaded in your inventory for 6 secs i think
What do you have to say about my literal one RUclips video, it is also weird physics as I figured out how to throw a roller mine on top of a nodraw or skybox or something
In that video it's resting on top of a special type of invisible wall. The two most common kinds of invisible walls are "clip" ones which usually only block the player, and "skybox" walls which block everything. The invisible wall in that specific spot though is nodraw and blocks everything but doesn't act like sky. When some things like a crossbow shot hit a skybox wall they're deleted, but they can collide like normal with that special wall. The cliffs along the whole first half of that map have the same kind of invisible wall. I think that wall was originally some kind of reference guide for Valve to make the shape of the cliffs. I think in most other places they deleted those walls or turned them into clips.
@@Pinsplash thank you for this explanation, I don't know these things as I am one of those people who makes a map in 20 seconds with a spawn a bunch of eadcrabs and a cube.
I don't know how it was changed, but when I for the first time in my life went through Half-Life 2 I managed to nitroboost through the bridge before the train could force me to turn back. I suppose they just changed the func_train speed or something like that. When I went through Half-Life 2 last time though, I simply used a barrel to climb above the force field brush twice. That was my first and only walkthrough without using buggy and skipping the sequence under the bridge. And I am glad that I completed it this way at least once.
Anime picture what is
I just realised the chugga chugga of the train is the same sound effect of the Gonarchs stomping sounds from half life 1, just pitched slightly and mixed with other sounds
2:03 you can make the shotgun reload animation loop over forever if you reload while shooting at a certain time
Do you ever wonder about the invisible "lump" in the bottom doorway under the far side of the bridge that appears if you manage to kill the gunship before traversing back across to the rocket crate? It's normally buried under debris when the gunship destroys the silo and blocks the way.

Gordon:Why the soldier arent ded,oh yeah i could just ride the crane and the combine dissapeard
The combine:i got a bad feeling about this
Epic alyx typing on car
That ladder thing is heavyyyyyyy!!!!!
I didn't know there was a convar for drawing clip brushes.
OK the menu logo thing is unbelievable.
Epic video
My Nokia's the most durable couch.
When anticitizen one breaks your train with a barrel on the tracks.
You should see the explosive couch in the second coast level.
I knew there was something funky about the shotgun, I used to blame it on my mouse button lol.
Does the hl2 train have a kill player trigger on the front or does it kill the player with physics?
About that crane... what if you trigger the gunship that spawns after that scene, then you retrace to the crane, and then you activate it? Can you pick the gunship with the magnet? Can you destroy the gunship with it?
it can't reach it but probably not
3:46 is that the same player state speedrunners get in to clip through walls?
no but that's also vehicle related
I didn't know you could use the binoculars
what is the pink stuff at 2:17
Wait, why did the train kill him at the end? That train doesn't hurt the player oddly enough when it hits you, only the car (and I guess rollermines). If you run across the bridge without the car, the train just gently pushes you to the side.
How did my sister never find the RPG glitch? She spent SO MUCH TIME on highway 17...
04:05 Valve, pls fix
Could that ladder thing be used in source speedruns somehow?
Unless someone can figure out how to not get teleported back or activate the level change trigger as they get teleported, I doubt it.
Even at that, any% doesn't even take the airboat anymore. (Not sure about other categories)
Its basically a buffered ledge grab from gta 5 so maybe
