Really appreciate you taking time to put this all together... currently in process of updating my buddies home to a bigger tank and more naturalistic setting and definitely will be putting this new info into practice this weekend.
I would suggest using digital thermometers and hygrometers because they work way better than analog
Lauren Voight will definitely be upgrading everyone to digital! Thanks for the feedback 👌🏽
Dude this is by far the best leopard gecko video of seen. I’m getting into the hobby and I’ve been struggling to find a setup in my price range as a college student. With your setup and the gecko I’m looking at just over $200 for all of it! Super informative video. You saved me a lot of time and money. Thank you!
bro thank you so much. every other video i saw wasn’t clear with the necessities, and this one was. thanks man
There are some textured laminate flooring now available that is great. You can snap some planks together larger than your cage floor, then cut the assembly to size.
Walking on loose substrate with tiny clawed feet can’t be good 24/7. At least have some tile pieces in there to change up the texture. Leopard geckos live in areas with compact soil and rock, not loose coconut. Terra Sahara soil from the bio dude is better, mix with some playsand for texture and add some tile or slate.
Great video. I have a Leo but her tank doesn’t look very appealing and I have wanted to make a habitat that looks realistic like this one for a while now. Thanks 👍
I love this. Thank u so much. It was so helpful. For all the stuff I wanted,( which was a less amount then this) it was about 150. So this was soo helpful. Thank u soo much
This is great. I just did this today. The only thing I’m not sure about is what temperature you set your thermostat to using eco earth. Thanks.

thank you for linking everything!!
@Kameron Watson it works for me
do you have a video of setting it up?
Tstat probes should be placed directly on the UTH/heat mat.
not necessarily, it depends on what substrate you're using/how. much of it youre using and whether or not you have a burrowing animal.
Did you put the probe in the eco earth substrate? Where did you place your probe? I just set up my tank and was wondering what spot is more accurate for heat mat thermometer.
You'd want the probe on the actual heat mat. 😊
@@johnniediaz86 So should the heat mat be in the tank directly under the substrate? If you have the mat, will you need a heating lamp?
Is this guy in movies yet? lol . Anyways I found this video informative.
Ah I did mine at $105

Thank you I need that
where did you get the stand? is there a link you can provide?
Not really natural but this is amazing very good job
You can’t get a amazing natural setup but he buy enough to make the gecko happy

Not sure if I just missed it or not but a good thing to point out with the heat mat is they are better for leopard geckos vs a heat lamp because leopard geckos get heat through their belly
That’s outdated information and incorrect. They don’t need belly heat, they just need heat in general. Besides, belly heat can easily be provided with a heat lamp by using slate or another heat conducting material as the basking spot. Heat mats are not a good heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce IRA and IRB like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.
@@nightinggale6470 Geckos still need UVA and UVB but heat mats help regulate cage temperature where as using bulbs as the only source is more difficult and can easily over heat your gecko where it's more difficult to get away from the heat with an improper set up. Not sure where this 'out dated' nonsense came from.
@@chelceeb.5239 using only a heat lamp really isn’t that difficult. When properly setup, a heat lamp will not overheat the gecko. Heat mats are completely unnecessary.
I'd love to know what lamp that is, if possible!
GanksDankly The lamp on the leopard gecko enclosure is an Exo Terra compact top, and then it’s just what size you will need🙂

question, so i’m planning on getting a gecko but i know that they are nocturnal. is it harmful to them in any way if i keep them in my kitchen where in the day time it’s very bright ?
It shouldn’t effect him. I keep my crested gecko which is also nocturnal in my room with my light on during the day.
honestly it might get scared because of all the commotion in the kitchen
Just so you know, Leo’s are not nocturnal. They are crepuscular, meaning they are active at dawn and dusk.
What shelf do you use
Is that just a normal light on top?
I don’t really want to get a baby gecko cause it’s a lot harder to take care of I’m assuming. So what age adult gecko is best to get.
A year is when they're about adult size, babies are only harder because you have to teach them to trust people, and they eat more often. Also you need to be careful with vitamins
My baby I just got isn’t hard to take care of, he just eats a lot and doesn’t want to be handled
I recommend 2 years old, its not too young or too old! I have a one year old gecko, and its Awsome but it's also really hard to gain his trust, but I'm patient! :)
Someone please help i cant find the lid

im really stuck on what substrate to use for my new leopard im getting soon, I don't want to have to worry about him getting possible impaction or anything? can eco earth cause impaction for my gecko at all? really helpful video tho!
I personally use Scott's Organic Top soil, but theres alot of bad and good options for substrate.
Good options:
Reptisoil
Scotts Organic Top Soil
Tile
Paper towels
Earthmix Arid (Only available in the UK)
Bad options:
Eco Earth. Very dusty, can cause joint issues and possible impaction.
Any coconut fiber substrate. Impaction is a huge risk with coco fibers.
Sand. Causes impaction and joint issues.
Reptile Carpet. Carries alot of bacteria and rips out teeth and claws.
Grinded up nut shells. Causes joint issues and impaction.
Also, I'd like to mention if you are planning to make a setup like the one in the video, add more foliage. Leos need lots of foliage!

@@lukesoren7688 No problem! :)
Leopard geckos stay away from "sand" in wild so stay away from sand. But you could with special sand. Not recommended tho
I agree. Eco earth has a small chance but not as much as sand. If you wanna really play it safe I would use paper towels they are cheap and risk free but they don’t looks as nice
ive never owned any sort of animal and im just worried about leaving it alone for too long how long can it be left alone. like whenever you go on a long road trip or whatever what do you do then?
Well you would have to leave them with someone cause they need food and just to look after them with their lights unless you have a light on a timer
Is this a enclosure for a adult leopard gecko?
Handsome specimen
You talking about the lizard or the guy
How and how often do you clean the eco earth?
I would say 1-2 times a week or you can spot clean. Since geckos poop in once spot you can just take away that spot and replace it with more eco earth hope this helps!
Paper and Paper towels are also good flooring, but reptile carpets are best
Nope. Carpet harbours bacteria and tends to get caught on their teeth and claws. Digging/burrowing enrichment is important. A suitable loose substrate such as a soil/playsand mix is best.
Didn't know that. Thank!
Guys if you need to know right now petco is having a sale on 20 gals for $20.Great time to get tlm the cage.
Thanks so much for that!! I was about to spend 175 on a 20 gal.
Do you know how many watts were on the heat mat?
Please get separate bottles of calcium and vitamins because D3 is not enough.
which do you recommend??
@@ganggang5525 If you have a UVB light use Zoo Med's calcium without D3, use Zoo Med's calcium with D3 if you don't have UVB light. For vitamin powder, I recommend Herptivite Multivitamin.
@@youzelin1199 can you use a monitored heating mat with light watt bulb? or can i just use a mat with the vitamins and the d3 powder
You can just use the mat since leo geckos don’t need UVB but it’s beneficial hope this helps😄
I just took in two surrendered leopard geckos. What kind of light do you have and does it get extremely hot? Like if you touch it?
They don’t actually need a heat light they prefer a heat mat bc they take in heat from their bellies. You should still use a light bc they need to simulate a day/night cycle since they are nocturnal. I just use an LED that I got for sale at Home Depot. It lights up the tank nicely without the added heat
Is there not supposed to be anything in the description?
I was always told to not put my tanks by any window is that true ?
Not sure about reptile tanks but for fish it is for 2 main reasons. First, since windows can be drafty, the temp in your tank will be hard to maintain. Second, because direct exposure to sunlight will cause massive alge blooms in your water.
Never use loose substrate, your gecko will eat it and die, don't use sand or dirt. Use tile, like this to spread the info.
Loose substrate is fine. Like he said, even if he ingests a little bit of it, it will pass through. Sand is a no go for sure. They live in a rocky desert with soil in the wild.
Where’d you get that shelf I need one
Home Depot!
Good video but it would be better if you didn't wave your hand around the whole time
Omg I feel so bad for the poor thing
Whats the heat mat the link doesnt work please tell me
Heat mats are not a good heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce infrared A and B like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.
Does anyone know what type of soil or dirt he used
it is eco earth coconut fiber, I think it's the best option for leopard gecko's substrate
Hi! Im thinking about getting a leopard gecko. I was wondering...
1. Do you just need one heating mat or do you have like 3 different mats across the tanks, each different temperatures.
2. Does your house have to be specific temperature for the gecko to feel conferrable? if so what temperature is best for them.
3.how often do you give them vitamins? with their food or a different time.
4. How often do you feed them? and would you recommend live insects or ones that are already dead.
5. Im turning 12 years old. do you think this would be an okay pet for a 12 year old to have?
Thanks so much for the video its really good and educational😃
Chris Briggs hi Chris!!
Other people can chime in as well for more info but for your questions:
1. There should only be one heat mat on the “hot side” of the enclosure, the heat with gradually get cooler the further down the enclosure to the “cool side”. There should be a nice heat gradient along the tank.
2. The house does not have to be a specific temperature as long as the inside of the enclosure is heated probably. You might have to turn your heat mat higher with the thermostat if your home is cold.
3. If they are a younger gecko you will be giving them more vitamins and supplements because you will be feeding them more. Juveniles should be fed every other day while adults can be fed every 3 days. I would supplement their feed twice a week with calcium and twice a week with D3.
@@jordanharris6484 Thank you!
If the room is cool, then 1 heat mat gives you a warm spot surrounded by all cold. That is the problem with glass tanks as enclosures in cool rooms. In warm rooms, no prob. Anyway, you will have to cover most of the tank top to help keep the heat in if using one heat pad in a cool room. Metal foil tape works best on top of a screen top to cover the screen and reduce evaporation and heat loss. Leopard geckos spend 99% of their time underground in the wild. Mimic that in the cage by covering the screen top. Again, in a warm room it does not matter as much. I have to use an oil-filled heater in winter near my rack system to help keep temps in a better range. I think a large plastic tub is a better enclosure than glass. I keep mine in 70 quart tubs.- approx 17 in wide by 32 in long by 5 1/2 inch tall. LGs love that setup.
For vitamins you should have 2/3 calcium powder without d3 in a dish mixed with 1/3 herptivite. It's a multivitamin that has more than just d3. Also too much d3 can make it so they can't absorb calcium so that's why you should get calcium without it. Leopard geckos are great because they actually know when they need calcium, so many keepers just put a sanded bottle cap or lil dish with the powders in the tank with them. Also before using eco-earth as a substrate measure the humidity in your house. Since eco-earth retains moisture it can actually make your tank too humid for your gecko. I personally like reptile carpet since I live in SC (which is very humid). Also babies and juveniles eat everyday and adults eat every other day to 3 days (depending on age, gender, how much they ate prior, size of the feeder insects, seasons, temperature, etc..)
Should I add a uvb to the enclosure
You don’t need to, but it’s beneficial😎
Hi um for the lighting I don't have any lighting for my gecko it's a leopard gecko I dont have a uvb I just give my gecko just a regular light I dont know but I hope you can read this comment and help me thx😁
younmi kim hi! From my understanding you don’t need uvb for a leopard gecko. As long as you give them the right supplements, vitamins and calcium you are okay!
Ok so room light is ok right?
Uvb is recommended but not necessary. They don’t really give of a lot of heat. The bulb needs to be 3%-5% uvb. Also if you have a albino leopard gecko I wouldn’t recommend a uvb bulb because their skin and eyes are way more sensitive.
Where would you recommend getting a leopard gecko
I would reccomend a local pet store, i got mine from petsmart which at the time i didnt know much about the pet trade industry. But if you can get one from a breeder who is reputable.
exact and simular are two different things
Cosmic Cuby no it’s not similar is kind of like it exact is everything little thing is the same
What rack is that
How old is that gecko? I knew someone that had a leopard gecko that was 8 years old and its smaller than that lol
should my moist hide be in the middle or on my heat mat?
im not an expert and i havent gotten my first leopard gecko yet but from the videos i'v seen, I believe you put it in the middle to not dry it out.
Partially over the heat mat.
lol i spent over 500 on mine
Congratulations
Could a 15 gallon tank work?
yes
I have a baby gecko, and only about a 10 gallon and I will get a bigger one as he grows, is that a bad idea?
I just got a baby, and I bought a 20 gallon because I didn’t want to buy a second tank in 6 months. It just depends on preference, but it just made mor sense for me to get a 20.
Addie I now have a 20 gallon and my baby is big happy and very healthy:) to the point I’m proud of myself lol
Keira bear yay! I’m glad you upgraded :)
No
Hold up hold up I came here to watch leopard gecko not the set up
how do u clean the loose substrate?
I use the exo terro "poop" scoope, works pretty well especially since leos usually pick one Spot of the enclosure as their toilet =)
Will it work with a crested gecko
No, they need a completely different setup.
He said it himself, but I want to say it too. Loose substrates aren’t rly recommended for leopard geckos because of impaction. I think I would recommend it if you are rly experienced and ur geckos don’t swallow their substrate when eating
I wouldn’t ever risk it
Not true at all. Depends on the substrate and how you care for your gecko. If you’re giving them the proper minerals and vitamins then you won’t have a problem.
What type of light bulb do you use?
Did you not even listen to the video
Tank size? LxW?
I’m not sure how big the tank in the video is, but a 36x18x18” enclosure or bigger is ideal.
What about the light
I’m not sure what they’re using in the video. But a halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial heat source, and an Arcadia tube UVB bulb is beneficial.
Are their any downsides to a used tank?
Make sure it is thoroughly cleaned out and there’s no cracks that could cut the animal.
@@jordanharris6484 Great, Thanks for the quick reply!
Is the heat mat under the tank or in it under the substrate thanks
Under the tank
I heard leopard gecko habitats should be tall, not long.
What you heard is incorrect. Leopard geckos are primarily terrestrial and need more floor space than height. They need a 20 gallon long bare minimum, and a 40 gallon or bigger is strongly recommended. That being said, they do climb, and should have climbing enrichment.
You kinda sound like exotics lair a bit
